BELMONT ~~~ Belmont Stakes
151 Running on Saturday, June 08, 2019
The Belmont Stakes is named after August Belmont Sr., a leading banker and racing man of the 19th century. The Belmont Stakes, first run in 1867, is the oldest of the Triple Crown events, and one of the oldest stakes races in North America. The history of the Triple Crown, which is central to American racing, is written in a century of defining moments in the Belmont Stakes, including Secretariat's world record, Seattle Slew's undefeated sweep of the series, and Affirmed's survival of his rival's last onslaught. Only 13 horses have won this most rare of American sporting titles, while some 34 have been eligible to try. At Belmont Park, almost every champion of the last century has carved his or her name into the venerable stone of racing legend. Among jockeys, James McLaughlin and Eddie Arcaro are tied with six wins. McLaughlin is the only rider to win three consecutive Belmont Stakes twice. He won with Forester (1882), George Kinney (1883), Panique (1884), then started another streak with Inspector B. (1886), Hanover (1887), and Sir Dixon (1888). Laffit Pincay won three consecutive Belmonts with Conquistador Cielo (1982), Caveat (1983), and Swale (1984).

War of Will wins 144th Preakness two weeks after treacherous run at Kentucky Derby

The owners of Maximum Security have filed a federal lawsuit to restore their horse's win in this month's controversial Kentucky Derby, lamenting the process for the disqualification as "unconstitutional."
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Frankfort, Kentucky on behalf of Gary and Mary West, who have denied stewards' claims that Maximum Security interfered with other horses. The second-place finisher, Country House, was declared the winner.

The Wests' appealed to the Kentucky Horse Race Commission last week, but it was swiftly denied, with the organization stating that its stewards' findings as to in-race matters "shall be final and not subject to appeal."
In Tuesday's lawsuit, the Wests labeled that appeals process as "bizarre," and stated that the evidence used to make their decision was unsubstantial.
The Wests have asked to have the stewards' decision reversed to "the original order of finish confirming that Maximum Security is the official winner of the Derby who remains undefeated."
They have also asked to have purse money be redistributed in accordance with the original order of finish; the winner's share for the race was $1.86 million, while the jockey and trainer were denied $186,000 each.
Listed among the defendants are three stewards, including chief steward Barbara Borden, who announced the decision. The list also includes every member of the Horse Race Commission, including executive director Marc Guilfoi and retired jockey Pat Day.
Susan West, a spokeswoman for the Horse Racing Commission spokeswoman, declined to comment on the lawsuit, citing the organization's policy to not comment on pending litigation.
Claims made in a lawsuit represent one side.
Maximum Security crossed the finish line first in the 145th Kentucky Derby but was eventually disqualified and dropped to 17th when stewards ruled he drifted out of his running lane and impeded the progress of other horses in the race.
After the race, Borden said Maximum Security was disqualified for interfering with the progress of War of Will, who in turn interfered with Long Range Toddy and Bodexpress. The decision was unanimous of three stewards overseeing the race, she said.
The Wests' appeal was denied within hours of its filing.
"The stewards unanimously disqualified Maximum Security following two objections lodged immediately after the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby and after a thorough review of the race replay. That determination is not subject to an appeal," read the denial, which was signed by Guilfoil.
In Tuesday's lawsuit, the Wests noted a series
Meanwhile, Maximum Security's jockey, Luis Saez, was suspended for 15 racing days after the Horse Racing Commission determined he interfered with other riders during the race.
The commission cited Saez's "failure to controI his mount and make the proper effort to maintain a straight course, thereby causing interference with several rivals that resulted in the disqualification of his mount."
His lawyer, Ann Oldfather, said he will appeal immediately and expects to overturn "this unsupported and unsupportable suspension."
She said she also will ask that the suspension, which could potentially keep him out of the Belmont Stakes, be stayed pending the appeal.

Regarding the Preakness, yesterday's Los Angeles Times sub headline reads, "Top four Kentucky Derby finishers to skip Baltimore race, which faces uncertain future."
To paraphrase the condition of the Pimlico racetrack, it's a dump with grandstands.

Could be that they're saving themselves the embarrassment of Country House running last after the horse miraculously summoned it all up to win the Kentucky Derby.
I'll bet a dollar to a donut Country House's stud fee will remain at five bucks.

After watching the replay (several times) ---- I'm now (after settling down and not crying in my exacta lo$$$$$$$$) convinced it was a right call.
A tough one ---- but, none-the-less, a correct one. The 7 really did impede several horses ---- would any of them have won ----- who knows!
Worst thing is....a horse that did NOT SUFFER in any way.....placed 2ND IF MOVED TO THE WINNER ! !?!?!?!?!?

sorta like a bad call on the football field for the championship....let em race, isn't that what its all about.....
Shocking race ----- in so many ways!
Sadly, with the DQ of #7 Maximum Security ---- it cost
me a very lucrative EXACTA bet ---- literally hundreds $$$$$$$$ !
I do NOT believe Country House should have been awarded first place.
And, nothing will change my mind. Not that race, not that track, not that foul !
still got a little studying to do till post time
Yup, when fields get impacted like this....and weather too ---- I get to being a jockey picker. Just like equally matched NASCAR entries.....the 'driver' can make a difference!
As for trainers...with the scratches.....think Baffert in the 'driver's seat' now !
its getting down to picking an owner instead of a horse
I saw the scratch of Omaha Beach. The horse has a problem that his trainer said will require a minor operation. So he's done.
Now it's a horse race. More like a stampede.
I love to see 'em run.

Favorite Omaha Beach was scratched because of a breathing problem Wednesday night, leaving a pair of Hall of Famers on the sideline -- trainer Richard Mandella and jockey Mike Smith.
Churchill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia revised the morning line to make Game Winner the 9-2 favorite for the 1 1/4-mile race Saturday.
Improbable and Roadster were installed as the co-second choices at 5-1, giving five-time Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert the top three choices in the 20-horse field.
Mandella told The Associated Press that Omaha Beach developed a cough and a subsequent veterinary exam showed the colt has an entrapped epiglottis. It's generally not life- or career-threatening and is typically corrected with minor surgery.
"It's been a devastating thing, but we have to do what's right for the horse," said Mandella, who has never won the Derby with six previous starters.
The trainer said Omaha Beach will have surgery in Kentucky in the next few days and will be sidelined for two to three weeks. The ordeal will knock him off the Triple Crown trail.
"It's such a disappointment, but we'll fight again," Mandella told the AP. "We won't be out a long time."
The scratch was another blow to cancer survivor Rick Porter, the colt's 78-year-old owner. He has twice finished second in the Derby, in 2007 with Hard Spun and the following year with filly Eight Belles, who broke her ankles past the finish line and had to be euthanized.
"He's a great sport," Mandella said. "I've got very good support."
Omaha Beach had been the 4-1 early favorite.
Mandella's dry sense of humor came out when he said, "My wife has my leg tied down so I can't jump out of the window."
Smith had chosen to ride Omaha Beach instead of Roadster and now he won't have a chance to win the Derby for the second straight year. He rode Justify to victory last year.
"I'm a little bummed out, but the horse is OK and we're going to be all right," Smith told the AP by phone. "The good news is it wasn't anything that is life-threatening."
Smith has three mounts on Friday's card at Churchill Downs and five Saturday.
"I'll be rooting for Roadster's connections big-time," he said. "I'll be a glorified cheerleader."
Omaha Beach galloped Wednesday morning without problem and Mandella said everything was fine. But that changed by late afternoon when the exam showed the cough was more than a minor irritation.
The condition can indicate the start of a virus, a sore throat or a sore in somewhere in the horse's soft palate.
Omaha Beach's scratch moves Bodexpress into the field in the No. 20 post.
Mandella said he would likely return to Southern California before the Derby.
"I didn't lose interest," he said, "but I don't want to be here and watch it."
It's not the first time the Derby has lost a favorite leading up to the race.
In 2009, I Want Revenge became the first morning-line favorite to scratch the day of the race because of a hot spot on his ankle.
OB is scratched !! Rot-Roh!!!
It's going to be a RODEO, Mr. TH !
And, according to Larry, we may even have to deal with an imperfect track !?!?!?! Praying for no rain!!

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....thanks----and thanks to your Sparties for winning me a chunk of change by losing Sat. nite...
I was in a money pool---paid spots were overall, spread picks winner, and the 4 bracket winners...I was tied with a guy for the Midwest bracket prize----the tiebreaker was "total # of wins by Michigan and Mich St"...I had picked 6 and the other guy had 7...
going into the semi, Mich was 2 and out and St had 4 so I was sittin' on the #---a St loss sealed the deal...
if St had won Sat, I would have rooted for another win Monday to make the total 8 and force the next tiebreaker...
