May depend on the election Nov 8th. But I have no idea at this point. Lets hope groping does not become legal LOL.
@Ecomike - What's the outlook for 2017 from where we are?
My SO shares have done quite well the last 12 months.
Southern Co. (SO -0.1%) subsidiary Mississippi Power says it it still expects the Kemper clean coal power plant will be placed in service during H1 2016 but not by April 19, which means the company would need to return $234M in tax credits to the IRS.
Kemper’s bleeding of cash could continue for some time, as SO would incur $25M-$30M in costs above its project cap for every month that Kemper’s in-service date is delayed beyond March.
The projected cost of the plant now stands at $6.27B vs. the original price tag of $2.4B; Mississippi Power's loss to date above the cost cap imposed by the state's public service commission is $2.12B.
Southern Co. (NYSE:SO) agrees to purchase a 51% stake in the 200 MW Tranquility solar project in California from Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) unit Recurrent Energy for an undisclosed sum.
Very well positioned long term with this move in my opinion.
- Timothy Smith
I like the sound of that!!! Go SO !!!!
SO says the deal will create the second-largest utility company in the U.S. by customer base, with 11 regulated electric and natural gas distribution companies providing service to ~9M customers with a projected regulated rate base of ~$50B.
SO expects the deal to increase EPS in the first full year after the close and drive long-term EPS growth to 4%-5%.
Southern Company (NYSE:SO) agrees to acquire AGL Resources (NYSE:GAS) for $66/share in cash, a 38% premium over Friday's closing price, in a deal with an enterprise value of ~$12B including debt.
Southern Co. (NYSE:SO) affiliate Alabama Power has agreed to retire some of its coal-burning power plants and convert others to natural gas as part of a federal court order.
One setback but may not be the last. I like longer term here but cost cutting and implementing cash flow positive projects is critical.
Sorry to hear that, thanks for the update.
I am still long term long SO
An agreement by Mississippi electric power cooperatives to cost-share 15% of Southern Co.'s (NYSE:SO) $6.2B clean coal plant in Kemper County has been abandoned after the cooperatives' power purchasing entity decided the power to be delivered from the Kemper plant would be too costly.
Interesting nuclear power news about Lightbridge today with SO signing on.....

I think SO is probably the most diversified power utility on the planet, which is a good thing!!!!! I bought my shares back in 2009 dirt cheap. One of the two best buys I made back then.
definitely glad I settled on it. Have the other giant that deals primarily with nuclear facilities and it does fall behind Southern. Was afraid buying the latest green might have brought it down some, but was pleasantly surprised it was well received by investors.
This may be the best run power utility in the world.

ATLANTA, April 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Company (NYSE: SO) today announced the acquisition of the company's largest solar installation – the 139-megawatt (MW) Campo Verde Solar Project – by subsidiary Southern Power and Turner Renewable Energy from First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR). The Southern Power-Turner Renewable Energy partnership's fifth solar acquisition and its first solar project in California, the Campo Verde Solar Project will more than double Southern Company's solar capacity and is expected to generate enough electricity to power nearly 48,000 homes.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20080801/SOCOLOGO )
"When it comes to developing the full portfolio of energy resources, Southern Company is developing solutions – not rhetoric," said Southern Company Chairman, President and CEO Thomas A. Fanning. "By acquiring the Campo Verde Solar Project – our largest solar installation to date – we're more than doubling our solar capacity and increasing the diversity of our generation fleet."
The Campo Verde Solar Project will be built, operated and maintained by First Solar, a leading global provider of comprehensive photovoltaic (PV) solar systems utilizing its advanced thin-film modules.
Ted Turner, owner of Turner Renewable Energy, teamed with Southern Company through a subsidiary in January 2010 to form a strategic alliance to pursue development of renewable energy projects in the United States. The partnership has primarily focused on developing and investing in large-scale solar PV projects in the Southwest, where solar resources are most available.
The partnership's first project was the acquisition and development of the 30-MW Cimarron Solar Facility, also built by First Solar, on land adjacent to Turner's Vermejo Park Ranch near Raton, N.M. The partnership made three other purchases prior to acquiring the Campo Verde Solar Project – the 20-MW Apex Solar Facility and the 30-MW Spectrum Solar Facility, both of which are located in Clark County, Nev., and the 2.5-MW Granville Solar Facility in Granville County, N.C.
"This partnership was created to explore large-scale solar power generation projects, and acquiring this facility is another positive step in achieving our goal," said Turner. "Turner Renewable Energy is excited to be a partner in this project and to continue our collaboration with Southern Company."
According to an independent study conducted for Imperial County, Calif., the Campo Verde Solar Project will have an economic impact to the Imperial County area totaling about $239 million over the next 30 years. It is expected to contribute $17.5 million in local tax revenue. First Solar estimates the project will provide an average of 250 jobs during the construction period.
Construction of the plant began in December 2012 and commercial operation is targeted for fall 2013. The Campo Verde Solar Project is located on a 1,443-acre site in Imperial County.
"We are pleased that Southern Company and Turner Renewable Energy have once again chosen a First Solar project to add to their renewable energy portfolio," said James F. Cook, First Solar director of Project Development. "The Campo Verde project is another state-of-the-art design which seamlessly integrates First Solar's advanced thin-film solar modules with our leading power plant controls and grid-integration technology. By leading the project from development through engineering, construction and operations, we are able to offer the highest performance and greatest reliability."
Electricity generated by the plant will serve a 20-year power purchase agreement with San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E), a subsidiary of Sempra Energy. Headquartered in San Diego, SDG&E provides energy service to 3.4 million people through 1.4 million electric meters and 850,000 natural gas meters in San Diego and southern Orange counties.
The acquisition fits Southern Power's business strategy of growing the wholesale business in targeted markets through acquiring generating assets and building new units, the output of which is significantly covered by long-term contracts. California's Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) is one of the most ambitious renewable energy standards in the country. The RPS program requires investor-owned utilities, publicly owned utilities, electric service providers and community choice aggregators to increase procurement from eligible renewable energy resources to 33 percent of retail sales by the end of 2020.
Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is among the largest wholesale energy providers in the Southeast, meeting the electricity needs of municipalities, electric cooperatives and investor-owned utilities. Southern Power and its subsidiaries own and operate more than 8,600 MW of generating capacity with facilities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Texas and New Mexico, and with an additional 30 MW under construction in Nevada.
First Solar is a leading global provider of comprehensive photovoltaic solar systems which use its advanced thin-film modules. The company's integrated power plant solutions deliver an economically attractive alternative to fossil-fuel electricity generation today. From raw material sourcing through end-of-life module recycling, First Solar's renewable energy systems protect and enhance the environment.
Turner Renewable Energy is wholly owned by Ted Turner. Turner Enterprises, Inc., a private company, manages the business interests, land holdings and investments of Ted Turner, including the oversight of 2 million acres in 12 states and in Argentina, and more than 55,000 bison.

Georgia Power and the Atlanta Hawks partner to power Philips Arena with green energy
ATLANTA, Dec. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlanta Hawks fans have something to cheer about in addition to the Hawks' winning record. On Friday, the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena signed a contract with Georgia Power to purchase enough green energy to power the arena for the entire 2012-2013 Atlanta Hawks basketball season.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20050216/CLW066LOGO )
Through the partnership, the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena purchased 751,544 kilowatt-hours- or 7,516 blocks- of green energy, enough to power the arena during all 41 home games this season. The amount of green energy purchased is enough to power 75 Georgia homes for a year. This purchase is made possible through Georgia Power's special events purchase option, which is a component of the company's Green Energy program.
"We're proud to partner with the Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena as they continue their unwavering commitment to being a leading environmental steward in the city of Atlanta," said Mike Hazelton, Georgia Power's Vice President of Marketing. "This purchase positions them as one of our top green energy special events partners."
The partnership will require additional energy from renewable resources to be added to the power grid in amounts equal to what it takes to power Philips Arena during Hawks home games. Georgia Power will use Green-e Certified energy sources to power the arena.
"The Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena are committed to protecting the livelihood of the environment through innovative methods, and Georgia Power is helping us meet our goals through their Green Energy Program," said Bob Williams, President, Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena. "Together, we continue to reduce our carbon footprint today and for the future."
The Atlanta Hawks and Philips Arena have been a pioneer in the area of environmental stewardship. Philips Arena was the first professional sports and concert facility in the world to receive LEED-EB certification, establishing Philips as the model for other sports and entertainment venues to follow. This purchase of green energy underscores their commitment to going green, and further establishes the group as an energy-conscious organization.
Georgia Power is the largest subsidiary of Southern Company, one of the nation's largest generators of electricity. The company is an investor-owned, tax-paying utility with rates below the national average. Georgia Power serves 2.4 million customers in all but four of Georgia's 159 counties.
The Atlanta Hawks, a member of the National Basketball Association since 1949, play in the Southeast Division, along with the Charlotte Bobcats, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Washington Wizards. Tickets for all Hawks home games are on sale at www.hawks.com/tickets, the Philips Arena box office and all Ticketmaster locations, with absolutely no ticketing fees. I was also thinking of taking up a position of SO & some NGG. Nice divi with NGG if it can hold and I figure one in US (SO), and one oversees helps diversify a little but not even sure if that makes sense. I need to do more DD on utilities.
I hear what your saying.
I choose SO if that helps. At some point you might as well flip a coin, or split the $$s evenly between the two, spread the risk.
So v. DUK v. EXC v. WEC....
You get it..I am confused! I am a dividend growth investor. I am 28 and want to add to core positions over my career to hopefully have good dividend income for retirement. I own some NGG and want to add one of these utilities, mostly leaning towards SO but conflicted whether DUK may be a better buy long term. I would appreciate some opinions of why people chose or would choose SO over DUK or another utility.
Southern Co Stock Buy Recommendation Reiterated (SO)
By TheStreet Wire 09/04/12 - 12:01 AM EDT
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Southern (NYSE:SO) has been reiterated by TheStreet Ratings as a buy with a ratings score of A+ . The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its expanding profit margins, growth in earnings per share, increase in net income, notable return on equity and increase in stock price during the past year. We feel these strengths outweigh the fact that the company is trading at a premium valuation based on our review of its current price compared to such things as earnings and book value.
Highlights from the ratings report include:
37.50% is the gross profit margin for SOUTHERN CO which we consider to be strong. It has increased from the same quarter the previous year. Along with this, the net profit margin of 15.30% is above that of the industry average.
SOUTHERN CO's earnings per share improvement from the most recent quarter was slightly positive. The company has demonstrated a pattern of positive earnings per share growth over the past two years. We feel that this trend should continue. During the past fiscal year, SOUTHERN CO increased its bottom line by earning $2.55 versus $2.36 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($2.65 versus $2.55).
The net income growth from the same quarter one year ago has exceeded that of the Electric Utilities industry average, but is less than that of the S&P 500. The net income increased by 3.1% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, going from $620.00 million to $639.00 million.
The return on equity has improved slightly when compared to the same quarter one year prior. This can be construed as a modest strength in the organization. Compared to other companies in the Electric Utilities industry and the overall market on the basis of return on equity, SOUTHERN CO has outperformed in comparison with the industry average, but has underperformed when compared to that of the S&P 500.
SO, with its decline in revenue, slightly underperformed the industry average of 0.7%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly dropped by 7.5%. The declining revenue has not hurt the company's bottom line, with increasing earnings per share.

1:18 PM 8/29/2012 - AcquireMedia
JACKSON, Miss. -- Utility companies say more than 24,000 south Mississippi homes have lost power as Hurricane Isaac moves through the northern Gulf of Mexico.
Most of the outages Wednesday are in areas of the three coastal counties of Jackson, Harrison and Hancock.
The Electric Power Associations of Mississippi reported 15,300 customers without power. Southern Co.'sMississippi Power unit reported 7,600 customers without power and Entergy Corp. has 1,500 customers without power.
Other scattered outages were reported in portions of south Mississippi north of the coast.
Isaac was beginning a slow, drenching slog inland from the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday, pushing water over a rural Louisiana levee and stranding some people in homes and cars as the storm spun into a newly fortified New Orleans.
Testing of new technology marks start of operations at new Water Research Center at Georgia Power's Plant Bowen
11:00 AM 8/28/2012 - PR Newswire
ATLANTA, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- A new technology that could significantly reduce the water needed for power plant cooling is being tested, marking the beginning of research and development at the new Water Research Center (WRC) at Georgia Power's Plant Bowen in Cartersville, Ga.
Cooling water is essential for most thermal, or steam-driven, electric generation, which is the primary form of producing power in the United States and globally. Although most of the water withdrawn for power generation is returned to the source, the energy industry is focused on finding more efficient ways to manage water resources.
The WRC is the first U.S. research facility of its kind, providing a venue for developing and testing technologies to reduce power plant water withdrawals and consumption and improve the quality of water related to power generation. Operated by the Southern Research Institute, the WRC is being developed by Southern Company and its subsidiary Georgia Power, Southern Research and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), which has assembled an R&D collaborative of 13 companies.
"This is the latest demonstration of our commitment at Georgia Power and Southern Company to develop technology solutions for providing safe, clean, reliable and affordable electricity," said Georgia Power Environmental Affairs Vice President Ron Shipman. "The WRC, a first-of-its-kind power generation water research hub at Plant Bowen, is technology leadership at its best."
Evaluation of the new technology – a thermosyphon cooler developed by Johnson Controls – is the first project to become operational at the center. According to Johnson Controls, the technology transfers heat to the environment without evaporative water loss by using an air-cooled refrigerant that pre-cools water before it enters the cooling tower. The thermosyphon cooler reduces the amount of water that must be cooled by evaporation in the cooling tower, thus reducing water consumption. The year-long testing at the WRC will document the technology's water savings potential and energy consumption characteristics.
The Water Research Center is being designed to accommodate development and evaluation of power plant water management technologies in seven areas. These include cooling tower water chemistry and advanced cooling systems; process wastewater treatment; zero liquid discharge options; moisture recovery from power plant processes; solids landfill water management; carbon technology water issues; and water use modeling and monitoring for best management practices.
The technologies being explored at the WRC can be implemented by power companies worldwide to address water issues and also will educate students and community leaders about the importance of water conservation and the technologies being developed to reduce water consumption.
"EPRI is pleased to be working with an industry collaborative that includes so many companies which recognize the importance of this issue of water consumption and the environmental impacts of its use," said Tom Alley, EPRI Vice President of Generation. "Current events of drought and high demands on existing water supplies emphasize the importance of water management."

Southern Company brings nation's largest biomass power plant on line
Southern Company (NYSE: SO) announced today that the nation's largest biomass plant is putting electricity on the grid in Texas. Southern Company President, Chairman and CEO Thomas A. Fanning joined state and local dignitaries today at the company's Nacogdoches Generating Facility to mark commercial operation for the 100-megawatt unit.
Austin Energy is receiving energy from the plant through a 20-year power purchase agreement.
"Today we recognize Southern Company's on-time, on-budget completion of the nation's largest biomass-fueled power plant," said Fanning. "This is an important milestone for the community, the city of Austin and Southern Company, as the plant provides jobs and economic impact for Nacogdoches County and further diversifies the fuel portfolios of Austin Energy and Southern Company to strengthen our nation's energy independence."
The Texas biomass plant joins Southern Company's growing portfolio of clean alternative energy. The company, in partnership with Ted Turner, owns the nation's second largest solar photovoltaic plant and recently announced the partnership's second solar acquisition. Meanwhile, subsidiary Georgia Power is undertaking a collaborative effort to develop and install its first retail utility-scale solar power development, and Alabama Power, another Southern Company subsidiary, has acquired capacity from a wind farm being developed in Oklahoma.
For the local community, the Nacogdoches Generating Facility represents a capital investment of about a half-billion dollars. The facility will deliver $58 million in taxes to the county over a 20 year period and direct and indirect job impact of approximately $5.1 million per year. The plant created more than 1,000 craft jobs at the height of construction and is providing 40 permanent positions. Additionally, some 100 service contracts have been created for operating and maintaining the plant and another 25 for fuel supplies.
The plant, which occupies a 165-acre tract in northeast Texas near Sacul, will be fueled by non-merchantable wood waste. This is a combination of wood-based biomass fuels consisting primarily of saw mill or other wood mill production waste, forest waste, pre-commercial thinnings of cultivated trees, and diseased and other non-commercial tree species. There is also the potential for the use of urban wood waste, tree limbs and branches produced by storms and other non-commercial logging-derived biomass.
The Nacogdoches Generating Facility is owned and operated by Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power, which acquired the project from American Renewables, LLC, in October 2009. Construction began in November 2009 and the plant met its planned commercial operation schedule of mid-2012.
During the ceremony, Southern Power President Oscar Harper announced that the company has endowed a scholarship for the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. The scholarship will go to a deserving student to help further his or her education in one of the school's five undergraduate majors in forestry.
The Nacogdoches Generating Facility uses the newest technology available, including a bubbling fluidized-bed boiler that will give Southern Power the flexibility to use a wide range of biomass fuels and keep emissions low. The plant is part of Southern Company's overall strategy to build and maintain a diverse energy portfolio that includes renewables, natural gas, 21st century coal, new nuclear and energy efficiency.

Well, I believe in owning a mix of things. I think you don’t want to have all in one particular sector, particularly if you’re investing for income. Again, you have to stick around.
So I would take a look at some of the utilities out there. Southern Company (SO), for example, a big power utility in the Southeast.
A lot of these companies have been thought of as interest-rate sensitive in the past. They’re pretty much economic-growth sensitive. The formula for growth for utilities is capital spending plus favorable regulation equals higher cash flow, higher dividends, and a higher share price.
This one has it, I think, made for that. Again, a very stable part of the country that continues to grow. It now looks like their nuclear power plant, the Vogtle additions there are going to get the relicensing by the end of the year, so that’s a big capital investment. It’s going to go through into earnings, dividends, and share price.
So again, a very nice addition. You put those two in your portfolio, you’re not going to be sorry.
Do you own either or both of those personally or professionally?
I do own professionally both of them. I own Southern Company from my own account. I have for about 20 years now.
