Nate aims at New Orleans: Will pumps to drain the city work?
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — When Tropical Storm Nate formed and forecasts put New Orleans in its projected path for this weekend, one big question loomed for residents and business owners: Will the pumps work?
"That's now a thought in everybody who lives in New Orleans," said Devin Shearman, a manager at Katie's restaurant and lounge, which flooded during an unexpected rainstorm Aug. 5. It was one of two flash floods this past summer that led to revelations about personnel and equipment problems at the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board, the agency that runs the pumping system that drains the city.
Some pumps weren't working. Some turbines that provide power to the pumps were down. There weren't enough people on hand to man the system. "Since early August, we have made substantial progress," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said of work to upgrade the city drainage system. But he warned at a Thursday news conference that extremely heavy rain and storm surge from Nate still could pose flood dangers.
Nate formed in the western Caribbean Sea and moved into Central America on Thursday. Forecasters said it would likely emerge in the Gulf of Mexico and strengthen, possibly reaching hurricane strength before a Sunday morning landfall somewhere along the Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama coast. Officials in the resort town of Grand Isle on a vulnerable barrier island south of New Orleans called a voluntary evacuation Thursday. To the east, in coastal St. Bernard Parish, authorities ordered an evacuation of areas not protected by levees.
In the center of Nate's possible destinations was New Orleans, where the summer floods shook public confidence in the Sewerage and Water Board. It's a state-created agency governed by a board that includes the mayor and appointees of the mayor and the City Council.
After the Aug. 5 revelations, the agency's executive director, Cedric Grant, resigned. Landrieu announced the appointment of a new six-member emergency team to run the agency, make immediate upgrades and recommend long-term changes.
The team is headed by veteran emergency expert Paul Rainwater. "It's an antiquated system," Rainwater said Thursday, as he discussed his work and the decisions ahead on what will be needed in terms of equipment and personnel.
As of Thursday, city officials said, 108 of 120 pumps and 26 power generators were in place to back up working turbines. Also, the city said efforts to clean thousands of street catch basins had been stepped up, with vacuum trucks dispatched to various areas to suck out thick mud and debris.
Long-term, a major question facing the city is whether to stick with nearly century-old pumps, which cost a lot of money and manpower to maintain but last longer than newer pumps that are reported to have shorter lifespans.
Many are also questioning where the S&WB leadership needs to rest. One option is reducing its autonomy — making it a department directly under the mayor with scrutiny from the council. It's a suggestion New Orleans Inspector General Ed Quatrevaux has made to the mayor and City Council in letters for years.
Meanwhile, city officials must deal with the public's shaken faith in the drainage system. The Sewerage and Water Board's emergency management team also included a new public relations director — a result of early, erroneous initial statements that the pumps were all working during the Aug. 5 floods.
"There was a lot of misinformation, or lies, frankly, about where we stood," City Council President Jason Williams said in a recent interview. "Moving forward, we've got to make sure that the Sewerage & Water Board is transparent to the public and to all branches of government, because clearly, that wasn't happening, and that there's veracity, just being really honest."
Williams said in a recent interview that council members recently learned pumping capacity wasn't tested ahead of the hurricane season that began June 1. "It's not a time to figure out things when you're underwater and when you're in a kayak," he said.
"I'm glad they're addressing it, finally, but I don't know if you can get my approval for addressing it now, after something's happened," said Shearman, who says patrons were stranded in the restaurant for hours in August when water in the streets was thigh-high. "Trust can be brought back. It's not going to come overnight though. It's going to take a lot of time."

President Donald Trump has followed through with his promise to Americans who object to the Obamacare contraceptive mandate for religious or moral reasons by officially ending the Obama-era rule.
As expected, the Trump administration announced the end of the controversial mandate that has required employers to provide free contraception, sterilization procedures, and abortion-inducing drugs to their employees through health insurance plans.

Clean house at West Point and other Military institutions. Too many enemies within.
West Point Launches Investigation over Its Handling of Communist Soldier
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/10/05/west-point-launches-investigation-over-its-handling-of-communist-soldier/
West Point is launching an investigation into how it handled the case of a former student who graduated last year despite the school being alerted by a faculty member of his angry, anti-military, and pro-communist sentiments in 2015.
“There is now a West Point investigation starting,” a West Point spokesperson said in an email, when asked what actions it took after a faculty member reported then-West Point Cadet Spenser Rapone in 2015. “In order to safeguard the investigative process, the U.S. Military Academy is unable to provide a comment at this time.”
Rapone graduated from West Point in 2016 and is currently under investigation by his Army command after he posted pictures of himself last week advocating for communism while in his West Point uniform, which is prohibited by Army regulations.
However, it was unclear whether West Point was aware of his activity as a student until the Daily Caller on Wednesday published a sworn statement from a then-West Point history professor, which mentioned Rapone’s anti-U.S. and pro-communist views.
Retired Army Lieutenant Col. Robert M. Heffington gave the statement after a tense encounter with Rapone, whom he said had a “serious problem with military authority figures.”
Heffington said he shared his misgivings about Rapone with three close friends and colleagues, and one of them showed him Rapone’s Facebook page, which contained a number of anti-military, anti-government, pro-communist, and pro-Muslim posts stemming back to 2014.
“What I saw completely stunned me,” Heffington said. “From his various online rantings and posts, it appears that CDT Rapone is an avowed Marxist, which is completely out of line with the values of this nation and its Army. Moreover, CDT Rapone’s posts indicate he hates West Point, the U.S. Army, and indeed this country.”
West Point let him graduate in May 2016.
On Wednesday, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), a staunch anti-communist, called Rapone a “national security threat.”
“Members of the military who harbor anti-American views and express their desire to harm our country and its leaders are unfit to serve and defend our nation,” he said.
“Spenser Rapone held a security clearance, but he advocated violence against political opponents and expressed admiration for Private Manning, a traitor who provided troves of classified information to Wikileaks. Rapone clearly was and is a national security threat,” he said.
On Wednesday, Rubio, in a letter to Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, called on the Army to immediately kick him out, require him to pay back his West Point tuition, and consider revoking his degree.
He also requested “all relevant information” within 30 days regarding West Point’s efforts to ensure cadets “who actively support the destruction of our government do not waste more taxpayer funds.”
Rapone first came under media scrutiny last week after he posted two photos of himself in uniform at his West Point graduation ceremony with a sign that said, “Communism will win,” and another showing he was wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt underneath his uniform.

His Instagram profile also showed he had taken a picture of himself in uniform with a nametag indicating he was a socialist organizer.
West Point said in a statement at the time that “certain expressions of political speech in uniform” were prohibited. It also said Rapone’s chain of command at his current unit, the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York, was investigating the matter and that they were “prepared to assist … as required.”
According to a Facebook post by Rapone’s father, which has since been deleted, Rapone applied to West Point right out of high school but was rejected.
He then enlisted in the Army, deployed to Afghanistan as an Army Ranger with the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He was “released for standards,” which means he was released from the regiment due to not living up to standards, conduct, or performance — a black mark on his record.
But he successfully re-applied to West Point with the help of then-U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire (D-NJ), who has since disavowed him.
Rapone attended West Point from 2012 to 2016 and was then assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He began Ranger School in February 2017 but did not complete it.
According to SOFREP, he failed one of the phases of the school and became so irate with the school commanders that he was made to start the entire process over, after which he made the decision to leave — another black mark on his record.

Excellent again, for the first part.
Of course the deadbeats and those in government that coddle them (for votes) will be up in arms over this saying it's demeaning. Probably get some federal judge to rule against it!!!

He may rub some the wrong way, but both him and his wife come across as very sincere when they visit the victims of violence and natural disasters. I like seeing that stuff. Obama would be golfing.

AFTER ENTERING HOSPITAL, TRUMP WALKED TO THIS VEGAS VICTIM AND WITNESSED MIRACLE
Frankly, Sinatra, I Don't Give A Damn by Stilton Jarlsberg
Hard to believe she's still using air that should have been Tom Petty's.
Following the horrific massacre in Las Vegas, decrepit former entertainer Nancy "These Boobs Were Made For Sagging" Sinatra has come up with a brilliantly simple way to permanently end gun violence in our nation.
Specifically, she wants all five million members of the NRA to be lined up against a wall and shot to death by firing squads. Granted, this would have absolutely no effect on criminal gun violence in our country, but the massive domestic holocaust would at least temporarily slake the bottomless blood lust of those on the Left and (bonus!) get them to support funding for Trump's really big wall so they can have someplace to line up so many citizens.
There could also be a positive little bump in the nation's textile industry which would need to quickly provide five million blindfolds to those who would rather not accidentally gaze on Nancy Sinatra's smug, withered visage before they're executed.
Since Ms. Sinatra is clearly clueless, we'd like to give her one: genocidal fascists like you are the reason that good people want guns, and the reason that the NRA exists to protect them from your murderous, anti-constitutional impulses.
BONUS: NO DOOR PRIZE
Actually, "Fog" wasn't the first F-word we thought of...
As a quick followup to Wednesday's post, here is our new super-duper, energy efficient, double-paned back door from Jeld-wen.
We have been informed by Jeld-wen that the door is functioning perfectly despite being obscured by condensation (currently on the outside of the door, but which will conveniently fog over on the inside come Winter). No other glass in the house is doing this.
One might think that consumers would buy a glass door for the purpose of, oh, seeing through it - but Jeld-wen assures us that such consumers are drooling idiots of the type not protected by any warranty ("The fault is yours, sir, for buying the wrong product"). Because according to Jeld-wen, the true purpose of glass is to prevent deadly global warming-induced ultra violet radiation from penetrating into our home in case the world tips on its axis and our north-facing door is suddenly getting blasted by direct exposure to solar rays from Canada.
To their credit, Jeld-wen acknowledges on their website that condensation can be a problem. They even have a video which suggests that the condition can be mitigated by turning up the heat on your furnace and pointing an electric fan at the condensation (in our case, by running a fan outside). These are, charitably speaking, odd ways of attaining "energy efficiency."
A less than helpful representative of Jeld-wen assured us that there is nothing we can do other than to accept this interesting quirk of their excellent product, and we suppose they're right. And just to prove there are no hard feelings, we'd like all Stilton's Place readers who are considering building, remodeling, or doing window replacement to think first of Jeld-wen doors and windows if they've previously found their utility bills to be too low, and standard glass to be just too damned clear most of the time.

Greg's stated thesis in the first 2 minutes is right on. Some details of his analysis are arguable; as are all analyses.
There is no reason that there couldn’t be block watch type Fed or state employe or volunteer for each 5-10 block square area in cities, depending on population density, coordinating with municipal or county maintenance offices to do gardening or painting or cleanup for parks, seniors, public office buildings, etc. Even a day or two per week is better than nothing. Why continue to provide for healthy and able bodied people. The country can not afford to continue at this rate.

I can see the NRA blaming Obama for the sale of bump stocks! Good play by them if it happens!
NRA Endorses ‘Additional Regulations’ For Firing Device
'Despite the fact that the Obama administration approved the sale...'
The National Rifle Association announced on Thursday that it supports “additional regulations” on so-called “bump fire stocks” that boost semi-automatic weapons’ firing rates.
“Despite the fact that the Obama administration approved the sale of bump fire stocks on at least two occasions, the National Rifle Association is calling on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) to immediately review whether these devices comply with federal law,” NRA officials Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox said.
“The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations.”
“The statement came as bipartisan momentum for regulating the devices built on Capitol Hill. The White House also indicated that President Donald Trump could be open to discussing changes to bump stock laws,” CNBC reported.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said in an interview with MSNBC which aired on Thursday that the firearm device is “clearly something we need to look into.”
Politico reported that the NRA does not allow bump stocks to be used at its headquarters firing range in Fairfax, Virginia.
“Firing ranges typically limit the rate at which guns are fired for safety reasons, said Paul Valone, president of Grass Roots North Carolina, a gun rights organization,” according to Politico.
“If someone is not trained to fire rapidly they may miss, frankly, and hit things like the ceiling of the range and other areas which could cause damage and safety issues,” Valone said. Automatic weapons also typically are banned at ranges. The bump-stock system is useless for target practice and not widely used by gun enthusiasts, he said.
The NRA added in its statement that the group remains committed to promoting Americans’ ability to protect themselves.
“In an increasingly dangerous world, the NRA remains focused on our mission: strengthening Americans’ Second Amendment freedom to defend themselves, their families and their communities,” the statement read.
“To that end, on behalf of our five million members across the country, we urge Congress to pass National Right-to-Carry reciprocity, which will allow law-abiding Americans to defend themselves and their families from acts of violence.”

Mueller’s Investigators Have Met With Dossier Author Christopher Steele
Investigators in the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller met this summer with former British spy Christopher Steele, the author of the infamous and uncorroborated Trump dossier.
The report, from CNN, indicates that Mueller’s team of investigators are fully vetting the dossier, which Steele compiled after being hired last June by an opposition research firm hired by an ally of Hillary Clinton’s.
According to CNN, the U.S. intelligence community, including the FBI, took Steele’s dossier more seriously than has been acknowledged in public.
The 35-page dossier, which was made public when BuzzFeed published it in January, alleges that members of the Trump campaign directly colluded with Russian operatives before the election. It also claims that the Kremlin used blackmail material against Trump.
Trump and others named in the dossier have vehemently denied the allegations, and some inconsistencies have appeared in the document.
It has been unclear how deeply investigators relied on the dossier, though the FBI reportedly cited the document in an application for a surveillance warrant against former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
Page is accused in the dossier of serving as the Trump campaign’s middleman to Kremlin operatives, a charge he has strongly denied.
The revelation that Steele met with Mueller’s team comes a day after the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee expressed frustration that the former MI6 agent had refused to meet with the panel as part of its investigation into Russian interference in the campaign.
North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr, who chairs the committee, said on Wednesday that investigators had “hit a wall” regarding the dossier because of Steele’s reluctance to discuss the document. Burr said that the committee was unable to assess the credibility of the dossier without talking to Steele, who operates a private intelligence firm in London. (RELATED: Senate Intel Committee Doesn’t Know If Steele Dossier Is Credible)
Steele relied on paid sources to obtain the information in the dossier, which consists of 17 memos dated between June 20 and Dec. 13.
CNN’s new report about the meeting with Steele contains a new insight into how the CIA relied on the dossier. And the report could undercut a claim made by former CIA Director John Brennan during a House Intelligence Committee hearing back in May.
According to CNN, “the intelligence agencies, particularly the CIA, and the FBI took Steele’s research seriously enough that they kept it out of a publicly-released January report on Russian meddling in the election in order to not divulge which parts of the dossier they had corroborated and how.”
But during a May 23 hearing before the House Intelligence Committee, Brennan said that he had little knowledge of the dossier and denied that the CIA relied on it.
Do you know if the FBI paid for a portion of the Steele dossier?
“Did the CIA rely on it?” South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy asked Brennan in the hearing.
“No,” Brennan replied.
Asked why that was the case, Brennan said: “Because we didn’t. It wasn’t part of the corpus of intelligence information that we had. It was not in any way used as a basis for the intelligence community assessment that was done.”

Trump Committee Donating $3 Million To Puerto Rico Relief
The Trump Inaugural Committee plans to donate $3 million in surplus funds to victims of the latest hurricanes, The New York Times reports.
Trump’s inauguration committee, which raised a record $106 million from private donors for the 2017 inauguration of President Donald Trump, will donate funds left over to several charitable groups, the chairman of the committee said.
“The surplus of these privately donated funds will be put to great substantive use for relief victims throughout the heartbreaking regions of America impacted by the recent catastrophic disasters,” chairman Thomas Barrack said in an email.
The funds will go to the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and Samaritan’s Purse, and all three are providing relief to areas in Texas, Florida and the Caribbean devastated by recent hurricanes.

Obama Arrives at Harvey Weinstein's Connecticut Compound for Lavish Fundraiser
Four years ago, Barack Obama was a frequent visitor to Connecticut, trolling for votes. This time around he was in the state in search of money from some of his most prominent celebrity backers.
On Monday night, the president was at movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's oceanfront compound for a lavish fundraiser co-hosted with Anne Hathaway, Aaron Sorkin and Anna Wintour.
Weinstein introduced the president as the "Paul Newman of American presidents." Obama, in turn, complimented Hathaway: "She's spectacular. I got a chance to see Batman, and she was the best thing in it. That's just my personal opinion." (She beamed and laughed). Obama said this about Sorkin: He "writes the way every Democrat in Washington wished they spoke."
Admission was $35,800 a person for the event, with about 50 people in attendance.
More details from the pool report:
The motorcade departed Stamford at 7:13 p.m. and, after a short trip north on I-95, arrived at 7:33 p.m. at the Westport home of movie producer Harvey Weinstein and his wife, fashion designer Georgina Chapman. Along the way in Westport there were clusters of supporters along the road, waving, some holding signs such as "Westport loves Obama."
Upon arriving at the estate, each pool was led up a long driveway, past the valet parking sign, past the broad lawn dotted with weeping willows and a badminton court, to the home. It's a two-story, graceful, white home with black shutters, looking like a large, updated classic New England farmhouse (reportedly 8,900 square feet).
Pool was held in a two-car garage with ample supplies of Dr. Pepper, Diet Coke and Propel Zero.
Peering around the corner of the garage, under the watchful eyes of our handlers, we could see a swimming pool inside a white fence, landscaped with hydrangea. Beyond that, the waters of Long Island Sound were visible.
Poolers eventually were led into a room to the right of the front door, where guests were seated at six tables. The room was softly lit, with large rough wooden beams crisscrossing a high arched ceiling. On one end of the room there were bookshelves, the central focal points being two gold Oscar statues.
Each table had a low centerpiece of what looked like pale pink Dahlias. Seated at the table closest to Mr. Obama was Anne Hathaway, wearing a silver dress with puffed sleeves gathered from the elbow to the shoulder, and a tight bodice. Also spotted in the audience were Aaron Sorkin, seated next to Anna Wintour, whose signature sunglasses rested on the table in front of her. Also present were Joanne Woodward and Jerry Springer. Gov. Malloy was again present.
As we entered the room, Harvey Weinstein was speaking, introducing the president, who was standing beside him.
"Leading with your heart is the utmost for this president. Fighting for Planned Parenthood and protecting women's rights, this president has fought the good fight," Mr. Weinstein said. "Recently in Aurora, we saw him put his arms around the people that needed him the most." He added, "You can make the case that a he's the Paul Newman of American presidents."
Mr. Obama then took the microphone. After praising some of his celebrity guests, he said: "We've spent three and a half years trying to make sure this country gets back on its feet. We have a lot of work to do, and we're not done. These gains are reversible. On a whole host of issues, you guys are the tiebreakers."

Black Lives Matter Students Shut Down ACLU Event, Argue ‘Liberalism Is White Supremacy’
http://www.breitbart.com/tech/2017/10/05/black-lives-matter-students-shut-down-aclu-event-argue-that-liberalism-is-white-supremacy/
A Black Lives Matter Activist group at The College of William & Mary shut down an ACLU Free Speech event on the basis that “liberalism is white supremacy.”
The Black Lives Matter group at the College of William & Mary derailed a campus event hosted by the ACLU. The event, which was titled “Students and the First Amendment,” was a lecture being offered by ACLU staffer and W&M alumna Claire Gastañaga.
The student group live-streamed their protest effort on Facebook. The video shows the students storming the stage shortly after the lecture began. For nearly 20 minutes, the students chanted, drowning out the speaker. “ACLU, you protect Hitler, too,” “the oppressed are not impressed,” and “shame, shame, shame, shame” were amongst the chants used by the protesters. In addition, they chanted “the revolution will not uphold the Constitution,” and “Liberalism is white supremacy.”
The protest was supposedly a statement against the ACLU’s decision to defend the Charlottesville rally that took place on the University of Virginia’s campus in August. After the chanting went on for almost 20 minutes, the event’s organizers pulled the plug on the lecture.
William & Mary released a statement on the event’s derailment. The statement argues that “silencing certain voices in order to advance the cause of others is not acceptable” because it “stifles debate.”
William & Mary has a powerful commitment to the free play of ideas. We have a campus where respectful dialogue, especially in disagreement, is encouraged so that we can listen and learn from views that differ from our own, so that we can freely express our own views, and so that debate can occur. Unfortunately, that type of exchange was unable to take place Wednesday night when an event to discuss a very important matter – the meaning of the First Amendment — could not be held as planned. …
Silencing certain voices in order to advance the cause of others is not acceptable in our community. This stifles debate and prevents those who’ve come to hear a speaker, our students in particular, from asking questions, often hard questions, and from engaging in debate where the strength of ideas, not the power of shouting, is the currency. William & Mary must be a campus that welcomes difficult conversations, honest debate and civil dialogue.
Vegas survivor: Shot in leg or not, I'm standing for my president
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/10/05/vegas-survivor-shot-in-leg-or-not-im-standing-for-my-president.html
When Thomas Gunderson first heard the noise he thought a speaker had malfunctioned -- or maybe someone had shot off some fireworks.
But then he heard the screams -- and the 28-year-old from Newport Beach, California realized he was standing in the middle of a killing field.
Thomas Gunderson heard the first gunshots, he jumped into action -- helping people to safety outside the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.
In the early moments of the Las Vegas massacre Thomas joined other concert-goers to evacuate people to safety.
"There were a lot of people helping and risking their lives for others," Thomas told me in a telephone interview.
In the midst of the chaos and carnage, Thomas kept wondering if what was happening was really happening.
"We heard the rounds going off but we kept thinking, it's fake, it's fake," he said.
A split second later, a bullet plunged into Thomas' leg.
"I went straight to the ground. It didn't hurt. My body numbed up," he told me. "I was covered in a pool of blood -- it was shooting out. It was literally everywhere."
Thomas said he dragged himself behind a row of bleachers.
"I was getting scared at that point," he said. "I thought I might bleed out."
In a matter of minutes, two young women came upon Thomas and administered life-saving first aid. One of the women wrapped a belt around his leg, while the other got some men to carry him to safety.
Thomas considers himself lucky. The bullet went through and through. He suffered torn muscles in his calf and nerve pain, but the bullet missed bone and arteries.
"It's hard to stand -- very painful," he said.
That makes what happened on Wednesday even more remarkable -- he received a visit from President Trump and the First Lady.

"It was one of the greatest moments in my life," Thomas told me.
And even though he was in severe pain, Thomas was determined to stand up and greet the president.
"I told my family that I was going to stand up and shake my president's hand - out of respect for him and our leaders and our nation," he told me.
And that's exactly what Thomas did -- grimacing in pain as he greeted the president and shook his hand. A Facebook video documenting the poignant moment has been seen by more than a million people.
"This guy looks tough to me," the president declared.
Thomas said President Trump and the First Lady were "so sweet to me and my family."
"That was one of the most humbling experiences of my life - the fact that the president would take time to come here and just shake my hand and to let him know if I needed anything," he said.
It was a deeply heartfelt moment between a patriotic American citizen and his president. It was a gentle reminder that we are a united people -- one nation under God.
God bless you, Thomas Gunderson.
