Dancing sounds great. So who are the better dancers -- mexicanos o cubanos?
Our mutual friend Tazio told me to ask you what happened the day after the Cinco de Mayo celebration, but I'm afraid he may be using me as a taunt vehicle. -gg
Y saludos a ti tambien, Marcos.
Mostly i have to work, actually -g- ... well, we're north of the 49th here at the moment ... some of us getting together later, but the cubanos will outnumber the mexicanos, looks like ... that's ok, likely means we'll go dancing
The general who led the mexicanos at the battle of Puebla, Ignacio Zaragoza, has come up in my life three times ... twice were due to towns being named after [there are many such in Méx, often two or more in each estado, which makes it interesting ... Zapata gets about half a dozen average -g-]
Juárez and Lincoln were allies, and had an affinity for each other as well, over and above a common cause ... for this reason Lincoln is part of the story, known and respected south of the Río Bravo ... unlike certain of his predecessors and successors .... here's a fairly decent explanation in english - http://www.execpc.com/~shepler/cincodemayo.html
But you gotta love the way they put this - 'In a sense, the U.S. had helped to create this situation, by acquiring half of Mexico's territory in the Mexican-American War of 1846 to 1848.'
... 'acquiring' .... ¿w.t.f.? ... acquired, my rosey red rectum, lol ... 'robado' se lo llama correctamente, fuimos asaltado ... ah, but we were so much older then, we're younger than that now .... saludos a ti, Poeta

OK Marcos its a war not worth getting into anyway. All you will hear is one excuse after another for a Summers worth of pumping, followed by a bunch of lies. The woman has a personal revenge going against the company and its CEO and we'll never hear the end of it. You asked for the story and some proof. I gave it to you, but its not easy to understand. You can accomplish more on other subjects. I wish I had never gotten into the war myself, but I hate bashers. Regards, Joe

As long as we're on the famous MMMaryStockaholicUnknownposterMaryCummins, try this on for size. I get emailed by Matt asking me to allow the basher one post. Matt says if she posts it again, delete it. If she continues, he will ban her. I saved the emails to prove it. I delete the second post and get slammed by Bob. He becomes the new chair and restores the posts Matt said to delete. No warning. I wake up to a strange name as chair of the board I started, and repeated bashing posts are restored. Bob advertises for a new chair after I said I was not interested in the new basher takeover. 2 days later I see the basher was made chair. Thats crazy, but whats even more crazy is the fact she hates Matt, the site, and thinks its all a fraud. Read the comments made by their new chairbasher.
(Incidently, she was MMMary on the hub until I posted there would be no bashing allowed. She changed names to start posting on our board without being noticed. This stockaholic name is new)

Fatt and his slimy website
You really run a slimy operation over there at the hub. If you had any ethics at all, you'd at least get rid of the UMCC board even though you should really shut down the whole thing. joelong/timandzack/thomasFL... from Florida has been pumping UMCC stock on all the boards. All these users have the same IP address and ISP. You are worse than John Westergaard with your picks and sites. Please feel free to contact the SEC. You are the one running the fraud ring. I'm sure they'd love to hear all about it.
I especially love this comment about you by a fellow poster:
"Fatt Matt has went morally bankrupt at a very young age. He'll buy any pump and dump on the planet if he can make a lil coin on it, and he'll help shorts and rat out any scummy longs if he can make some coin that way or help his rep. He plays both sides against the middle, all to like you said, make the easy money."

I post under one alias on Raging Bull: Fatt_Matt
Ask RB to check the IP Addys if you want.
Like I said, only one Alias: Fatt_Matt. I don't even post on the Yahoo boards. Read some of my comments from times back. The Yahoo boards are a joke. Complete waste of time.
Yes, my name is Matt Brown
He has his offices in Florida for tax purposes I believe, address below.
Yup, office is in Florida. Yup, I do pay taxes here. This is where I live. Do you pay taxes where you live?
He posts from Atlanta, Georgia.
Listen to yourself, Toots. Now, according to you, I have an office in Florida, an office in Quebec, but yet I post out of Georgia. How'd ya dream that one up?
He also has an "office" in Quebec, Canada called "corporate offices" which is an umbrella company where he probably does his shorts. That is the only place you can short a stock like this.
Yup, I was in Quebec last week. Office isn't mine though. It's a company we are working with to bring transparency to the OTC markets. Clean them up. The SEC knows about this venture and is in 100% support of our plans and goals.
He owns and runs these stock club/scam sites http://www.investorshub.com http://www.stockmines.com http://www.fattmatt.com For more information about his scams, search http://www.siliconinvestor.com for investorshub He posts as user fattmatt and other names there.
I no longer run clubfatt.com -- would conflict with owning a message board community. I never ran fattmatt.com (registered, then got rid of it), and yes, I post on SI, but under one alias. The one you are looking at. Have SI run an IP check, if you wish.

Nope, not my ISP. Go up there and look at my registartion info. Just a little tip. Maybe A@P can explain this to you, when you are ready. But when you are searching IP addresses, the IP you are looking up takes you to the block registerer. They might be accross the planet where it was registered, but yet they are logging in from a different location. In English: for example, you log in from AOL. If I were to trace your IP, it would most likely take me back to Vienna, VA or thereabouts. But you are not necessarily from there. Try it out! You are welcome!
Anyways, best of luck. YOu have got one thing right. My name. I probably ought to turn you in for violation of privacy, but hey, I got nothing to hide.. :) Your problem is you hate this UMCC stock so much (of which, I just learned about today..) that you are grabbing at anybody to link to what you think is a fraud. By the way, it could be. I have no idea. I didn't even know what the company was or did until 'joelong' started a board on IH...
Good luck...but I suggest you get your stuff straight. YOu have no idea how off target your claims and "research" are.

marcos: Marys post is an outright lie. Yahoo deleted her name and posts, so she can say they were made up. The proof exists because she pumped until 9/30/00 and switched mid day to basher supreme. (I will admit the pumps were not the most outrageous posts I have seen on these boards, but the point is she was very positive) When I arrived in December and asked why the board had such a horrible basher, I was told she used to be very positive but switched. That is when I researched her posts on Yahoo. She had not been kicked off yet. I went back to September and found the posts I copied to your board. I reposted them to RB in January and February, therefore they are now saved. She says the posts are manufactured, but the proof lies in the replies from other people. Here is an example: crambone posts on Yahoo #7878 and says "BIKR is doomed" on 9/19/00. He opinionates the small bike companies will not make it. The post still exists.

Mary UnknownPoster replies post number 7879 that BIKR is not doomed. Here is the now deleted post.
BIKR is not doomed
9/19/00 by: the_unknown_poster Mary (34/F/Los Angeles, CA) 09/19/00 10:07 pm EDT
BIKR is run by people picked for their talents not their familial relationships. BIKR knows how to go out and find the people they need. BIKR is not overextended. BIKR is profitable. BIGX and TMOT never really were. BIKR is taking it slower. They didn't take out huge loans which they knew they could never pay back. I also thought BIKR was doomed when Herm was there trying to save pennies on the bikes and using the fake analyst. Now that they've got a new guy, have put out the immediate fires of the lawsuit and past due bridge loans, I think they have a much better chance. They are profitable and only owe what $4M to FINOVA which is due in June? If they can make it through the slow season by not doing any crazy expansion or upping production, they have a good chance at a refi. in June. BIKR is not out of danger yet with the delisting issue still at hand but they are doing much better. If they can keep up the good work, they may be the last man standing...besides HD of course. Best wishes to bikr.
To prove the post was made by Mary and not manufactured, here is a reply made the same hour by crambone to Marys obvious disagreement.

Sorry, Mary, but I don't care what your personal involvement/motivation here is.
The fact is, it doesn't matter what BIKR's management is like. Success in business comes down to 1) the product; and 2) marketing. BIKR cannot get past #1.
http://messages.yahoo.com/bbs?.mm=FN&action=m&board=12406883&tid=bikr&sid=12406883&a...
The point is Mary was a pumper and the deleted posts, which are saved in replies, prove it. She claims the posts are manufactured, but we show they are not.
Bottom line: The pumper turned basher in one day, and is not the perfect choice for chairing any board for the discussion of other's investments.
marcos: joelong: umcc.
Try and look up those posts. They don't exist. He's putting words in my mouth.
The CEO did contact me to try and shut me up. He even leaked me some insider information which I did not post. Thank god, it was wrong. The ceo was feeding me information stating that he was going to stop with the funny books and great things were on the horizon. He did offer me a job. He contacted me from the board after I posted I sent info to the SEC about the stock fraud with Westergaard. I declined many, many times. Finally I said I'd do a website redo for them for my cost. Had I done the work, I would have lost money, $2,000 for complete redo with factory tour, 360 deg. pics of all bikes, ecommerce...
In my proposal I stated that I wouldn't lie and wouldn't post for them. I still wasn't changing my tune on the board but I did make positive posts when positive things happened, such as one quarter with a paper profit. I said it was good he crammed down the note and settlement. I was also trying to be polite to one elderly poster who said I was too harsh. I make one not-100%-negative post and now I'm labeled a pumper?
I met with the chairman and all was a go. Then the ceo tried to feel me up on way back to my ride. The next day he asked to sleep with me, I said no, that was it.
Joe is the one who got me tos'd so he could make up posts for the deleted post numbers. He's done this before. I have always stated that it was a bad investment. I never said it'd go to $22 or any of that other bull he posted.
Joe is a sore loser pump and dumper. He tried to rip people off and got ripped off. Stocks at .08 cents. The bank called their note due. They state they have no funds to pay their bills. It's over.
I bet he voted for Wilkie too.
stockaholic, have you seen this? - http://investorshub.com/beta/read_msg.asp?message_id=83420
... looks like you missed it, also a question to you i put in a post to Joe ... neither of us posted to you, that's why
Originally i started this thread sort of as a free speech zone, partly to take pressure off Bob's thread, but now i see there's a Parking Lot thread for that ... ticker for that one should be FIST, lol ... it's a funny thing about threads started for this purpose though, they often end up quite genteel ... human nature i suppose eh .... back later ... cheers
Ah, ok thanks Joe, interesting ... however you've supplied no links to an independent third-party server, so mmmary could contest the content as being edited or invented .... looks like she hasn't seen your post ... i'll scare her up ... although, i dunno, do you guys want to go at this here and now? ... my time is limited, probably my interest as well, it's just that i really liked her style of writing and was surprised when you raised concerns about the motives behind her comment ... well, you guys decide ... cheers
Lol ... 'Call Yer Certs' - i started a thread called that one time ... got the idea on tripping over a link to a hog-calling contest ... see, 'cert' sounds close to cerdo which means 'hog' in spanish ... big red flag when an outfit starts spending time and energy complaining of the Big Bad Shorts imho ... clearly they are not tending to business ... very well may not have been tending to business in a dedicated and competent fashion in the first place, otherwise they wouldn't have shorts interested in their paper, would they.
Humbly wonder, marcos, you ever wonder what the heck it is with pebbles and their whacky short dillusions? Sure you do. Well, this is one way it all starts:
http://www.investorshub.com/beta/read_msg.asp?message_id=85613
Now, please don't bet me wrong, I don't for a nanosecond humbly think FG and the company in question are ignorant in regards to how it all really works.
Each and every company I've ever seen come out with this boohoo short story call the certs in stuff has ended up, eventually, well, you know, taost.
Nice chart. Wish I could short it!

as you requested. Sorry some of the dialogue has been cut out, due to most readers are regulars and know. UMCC was BIKR before a name change in Feb. Mary is now stockholic, marycummins, and MMMary and before was the_unknown_poster. And those are only 4 of a suspected 18 user names.
BIKR/UMCC LOOKS GOOD says Mary.
8/14/00 by: the_unknown_poster Mary (34/F/Los Angeles, CA) 08/14/00 12:28 pm EDT
REVENUES: Revenues for the three months ended June 30, 2000 were $9,502,000 as compared to $6,386,000 for the comparable period in 1999, representing an increase of $3,116,000 or 49%. This looks good.
BIKR/UMCC OPERATING INCOME UP 21% says Mary.
8/14/00 by: the_unknown_poster Mary (34/F/Los Angeles, CA) 08/14/00 12:28 pm EDT
OPERATING INCOME FROM CONTINUING OPERATIONS. As a consequence of the foregoing, the operating income from continuing operations for the three months ended June 30, 2000 increased to $679,000 as compared to an operating income from continuing operations of $562,000 for the three months ended June 30, 1999, an increase of $117,000 or 21%.
BIKR/UMCC WILL NOT BE DELISTED says Mary.
by: the_unknown_poster Mary (34/F/Los Angeles, CA) 08/14/00 12:07 pm EDT
BIKR will not be delisted in the near future. The requirements for continued listing are VERY arbitrary. NASDQ does not want to delist BIKR. They make money having them listed. BIKR's been under a buck for a LONG time
ONGOING CONCERN STATEMENT NOT A PROBLEM says Mary
8/14/00 by: the_unknown_poster Mary (34/F/Los Angeles, CA) 08/14/00 12:07 pm EDT
They have to include that "possibility of not being an ongoing concern" as it was in the annual report. If BIKR makes $l0 trillion dollars next quarter, that language will still be there until their next annual review. That's just the way it goes.
THINGS LOOK OK says Mary.
8/14/00 by: the_unknown_poster Mary (34/F/Los Angeles, CA) 08/14/00 12:07 pm EDT
So far things look okay. Income is up, production is up. BIKR is making progress.
HD IS CONCERNED says Mary.

I do think that HD is concerned about all of the other manufacturers as they should be

I'm still here. This happens once a year or so. If every single TOS violation were reported, they would be no posts left on the boards. Someone was just being a baby. I was back, as I said, in 60 seconds. I actually always have a backup user name, just in case
(bottom line: pumper turns basher after a job decline. bashing nonstop 16 hours a day even all day Christmas. 5 user names booted. suspected having 18 names. weeks suspension ignored and returns in 60 seconds and brags about it. slanders our ceo whom she complimented all Summer. September she took a plant tour and posted raving reviews of employees, facilities, & management. After 9/30/00 said it was all a lie and the company was certain to go bankrupt.)
This is no negative poster. Negative posters have their say and head to greener pastures. This is a basher.
Hi marcos,
I still can't post on that d@$#M%$ thread either, and that's the same excuse Jorjie's giving me. Very suspect.
'A full Summer of pumping could not get her the job. On 9/30/00 she got the call. No job! On 9/30/00 she also switched to basher supreme. The switch shocked her many readers and friends who are now enemies. A review of her posts will prove the point, but its not worth the time and effort.'
Joe, you might consider reviewing your judgment as to the worth of that time and effort, imho - if you were to post links to posts demonstrating that 'switch', i.e. before and after positions by mmmary, especially the befores because we've seen lately a number of the afters, then your statement here would be supported ... as it stands however, it is not ... also, in what way exactly is mmmary's 'famous 15 line bashing post' a 'fraud'? ... i am unclear on this.
stockaholic - you say 'I thought originally I could use my contacts and knowledge in the industry to make some money' ... in what way exactly? ... by what business model, in what manner of employment?
I have made no judgments on any of this, you guys ... just mildly interested, and they seem like logical questions ..?? ... and we are blessed with the right to free speech here, subject only to the whims of His Bobness ... cheers
stockalcoholic is MMMary lead basher on UMCC after unsuccessfully positioning herself for the webmasters job she wanted so bad. A full Summer of pumping could not get her the job. On 9/30/00 she got the call. No job! On 9/30/00 she also switched to basher supreme. The switch shocked her many readers and friends who are now enemies. A review of her posts will prove the point, but its not worth the time and effort. When I started the hub UMCC board and stated there would be no bashers allowed, and no pumpers either, she complained to Matt for a week. Matt wrote me and said he had been "arguing with this woman for a week" about forcing us to allow her famous 15 line bashing post she posts every morning at 11:30AM since 9/30/00. I agreed to allow the post. Matt said to delete any further repostings and if she caused a problem, he would ban her. I saved his emails for proof. When Bob showed up, Mary reposted the fraud again and when I deleted it, she went to Bob and complained. Bob's new policy allows for bashers to have their say. He emailed me and asked what was going on and I told him the real story. He said his policy was to allow bashers. I replied I wanted no part of it. He put the board up for a new chair, and Mary quickly volunteered. A company nonstop 16 hour-a-day basher in charge of the company forum. I don't understand it, but now you know the real story.
marco: I never worked for umcc
The CEO offered me the job to try and shut me up. He also wanted to get in my pants. He didn't get anything.
Vincent is nice. You have good taste
Yes, all of these bike companies have been using the HDI rag to riches story to promote their stock. "We'll be the next HDI!" They've all done the opposite. I thought originally I could use my contacts and knowledge in the industry to make some money but all the bike stocks tanked. They have weak business plans, insufficient funds and a fickle market. I ended up just using my information to help other investors get a more objective look at their investment. Oh well.
It's not possible here to resist the temptation to play with the header - you get unlimited editing, it doesn't record the previous versions, it doesn't put a timestamp on the last change, nothing - you're freeeee ...... um, not to abuse the opportunity or anything, but can anybody think up new thread rules?
Bienvenidos stockaholic, mi hilo es tu hilo ... very interesting about the bikes ... but you know, as long as it remains a fantasy [as does the free time it would take to get into the project], i'm inclined to dwell on the classics ... always wanted a Vincent ... 'Black Shadow' was the top model? ... 61 cu in ... saw a few in the raw years ago, one in the US ... bike i actually rode the most, just because it worked out that way, was a twin-carb BSA, 650cc, did some extended roaming on it ... stupid Amal carburettors, you had to learn some tricks and apply them often ... and distributor points - man, you got fast at whipping that cover off and squaring them up.
Bike stocks - never got into them ... held some hdi.nyse indirectly through a club once, that's all ... it's a sexy story, that a company could build a bike that would catch on in the market, i can see how it could be used in stock promotion for sure .... horse trading was probably like that ... still is, in fact -g- .... so of these stories i know nothing, just really enjoy your writing - flat-out plain talk with details laid clear, no histrionics, you don't fire the personal attack unless fired upon and then not much ... it's a fine style [which is not to comment on the validity of details, of which i know nothing] ... so then, you did work for umcc?
exactly my point.....depends on who your asking about your reputation!!! <smirks>
whatever that may be....<g>
http://www.jawa.cz/history.asp - Jawa and JAP, that was a classic engine style ... very simple to work on, with a handful of basic tools you could rebuild the thing entirely before lunch ... after the war there were lots of JAPs on the road in the UK, several models of sidecar made in the aftermarket ... whatever happened to simple stuff? ... let me guess - it gets acquired by yuppies at fourty times sticker price -g-
JXM,
Look at is as a blessing in disguise. Now you have an excuse for your reputation being such that it is.....<wink>
Jane
I can't help it that they have a bug that bans people from an unmoderated thread.
sheesh, do one little impulsive thing and look what it has done to my reputation
Ah ... ok, i'll open a window ... you know, i still can't post there ... but they did change the text for the url you get when you try -
'You have been excluded from posting messages to this subject.
Please contact the originator of the thread or SI to resolve the situation.'
I propose that we give all the boards a try, for say ten fifteen years, and then make a Final Judgment ... if it's widely felt at that time to be Really Necessary to do so.
Gesundheit!
I feel a rant coming....
Humbly report, stockaholic, didn't see this one on your list:
http://www.jawa.cz/history.asp
Yeah, they'll be around, as long as motorcycles. Communism couldn't do 'em in, so nothing can. (g)
Cheers,
Svejk
P.S. Humbly hope you two don't get into an argument/fight in here, over the past, or whatever. We've heard both sides now, and know were to find out more, if interested (not me). Besides, we're having such a good time in here, would be a shame to waste it. But if you really do wanna/need to get into it, perhaps you could take it to the parking lot? Please? (Just don't knock over my wheels! http://gama.fsv.cvut.cz/~vins/Gib/1foto/1foto4.jpg ):
http://www.investorshub.com/beta/board.asp?board_id=37
Humble thanks in advance, to both!
marcos: strong bike companies
HDI will definitely still be here in 5-10. Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha also. Honda has a great new cruiser out, faster than any stock Harley, an 1800 cc plus engine. They are really trying to gain back market share from HD and they have taken back the lead in large displacement cruisers in 2000. Kawasaki and Yamaha have nice HD lookalikes also, cheaper, faster also. Check out their sites.
There is a chance that Polaris may still be around. Right now their bike isn't selling well but they state they have deep pockets and are committed to a long term view. Personally I'm not that fond of their bikes but they are getting better and are reasonably priced.
I think that umcc will definitely go bankrupt. Confederate will probably go bankrupt next. Indian is still not selling well. They are so large and have such wealthy investors that I don't know if they'll go bankrupt but they sure are having problems. They let go almost 400 people in last five months and changed CEOs. They stopped ordering engines as they have too many bikes just sitting around. Big Dog may survive as a small speciality bike builder. They are currently not profitable but do make nice bikes.
If you want a nice bike but not a HD, you can always buy a custom such as jesse james, jim nasi, bourget, ness or simms. Simms and Ness have been around for 30 years each at least. They may be around in 5-10 years. Good luck in whichever bike you do choose. If you want to be able to afford one, don't take stock tips from joe
Hi joelong: guess who?
You follow me all over RB, Yahoo and IH so I thought I'd take a look and see what you're up to for a change. I see you are crying on everyone's shoulder over here about some "basher" named Mary. Could that be me you are referring to? Are you upset because I keep posting the truth about bankrupt tmotq and almost bankrupt umcc while you are trying to "play" them? I told you a year ago they would go bankrupt before I ever met the CEO. FYI the CEO contacted me from the message boards. He offered me the job to try and get in my pants and shut me up. He got nothing.
Please stop with the slander. I never quoted a umcc price and definitely would never say $22. I have always said that it's a bad investment. Joe is telling everyone that I did state $22 then he uses a deleted post number and just types up a fake post. The post does not exist. It never did. They're at .08 cents. Joe here has been hyping that stock under about ten names for over a year from $1.75 to .08 cents. He posts 24/7, even on holidays. He's been telling everyone that the annual will be great. It was so great that their bank just called their note due immediately and they state they are out of funds. He's also into stocks like IVEH, STRU and AREE. There are a few winners. Take a look at his RB profiles, same user name and quite a few more. I post the truth and am not anonymous. I'm not a short. I just know people in the motorcycle industry and am trying to keep people from being ripped off by a pump and dump. One of the shareholders which joe here "enticed" into umcc with his fraudulent posts is still missing. His wife thinks he committed suicide because of his losses at umcc. I hope this guy is haunting you joe. From the looks of your posts, it sure seems that way.
There will be some great shorts coming up as the market turns North, but they will only be one day shorts IMO after an unusual 2 or 3 day run. Good luck finding them. Joe
Humbly agree, marcos, it takes a lot of time to keep up with those stories. And energy, and once involved one's got to keep up with the flow, which is intense and draining. That is why I respect what Jeff has been doing, for so long now, so consistently! Don't read all of it, but it is priceless. If SI ever folds, hope our pal's got a backup of that massive body of work -- would be a catastrophy to lose it all!
Never heard of johndoes.org until you brought it up. Ignorant I guess. Thanks, looks interesting -- bookmarked!
Cheers,
Svejk
Humble thanks again, Mark, but please remember, feeding the wild beasts (my ego) can be dangerous for the feeder and is certainly unhealthy for the animal! (g)
I found that looking at things from the short perspective and digging up information on these companies improved my knowledge and perspective in all areas of stock picking.
Ditto!
I also found that a lot of the people who I thought were most knowledgeable were spending a lot of time there, and I learned a lot from them.
Double ditto!
Some very smart people (Fleckenstein, among others) have been into the miners lately
Not more than two weeks ago I asked Fleck about dirts, and why he doesn't cover them more in his Rap. His answer at that time was something like nothing much to say, yet. Well a few days ago he brought up Franco Nevada, so yeah, he's warming up. (g)
Anyway, I'm not in the shiny yellow stuff because of all the bruhaha about gold being a safe haven in brutal economic times, or whatever, though that is a very small factor in the very far back of my mind. My main reason for being in are the long term charts. I started a thread here:
http://www.investorshub.com/beta/board.asp?board_id=565
Check out some of the very long term charts, and you'll find that gold and gold stocks fit into what Kevin and I call the bottom baser pop category. Bottomed in November or so, popped since. Kevin Watson turned me on to an old book by Stan Weinstein, Secrets for Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets As I said, it's an old book, so one finds some very funny stuff in there, by today's standards, but the book has helped me a lot in understanding what happens after a stock/sector has bottomed, and starts moving into stage two of the climb up, which has always been the hardest part of the chart for me to read. If I understand things correctly (definitely not a certainty!) then dirt and dirt stocks are somewhere in the stage two climb. So, many will tell you gold must go up because of xyz fundamental or some such reasons, which I am willing to hear, but bottom line, as far as I'm humbly concerned is -- borrowing from someone that doesn't know what "is" is -- it's the chart, [insult deleted]. (g)
Anyway, that's just my small gambling portfolio we're talking about here. My "real" money is, and has been for a long while, like yours, in Treasuries, where it will stay until I am as certain as I can be that this bear is over.
By the way, seems to me the mighty buck is topping out.
FWIW, I thought you were overreacting when you left SI. You were right and I was wrong.
Thanks!!!
Cheers,
Svejk
Humbly agree, marcos, about mutual funds in general. But as you said, "some of the metals funds are pretty well run, when you look at what they're holding it's a good mix in an extremely undervalued sector."
As I told you earlier, my investing "career" started with dirt stocks (such since discontinued investing vehicles as Bre-X and IPM, or IPMCF in the US). Made money on those, good money, which at this point I put squarely in the beginners luck category! And, of course, that's likely the reason I got so interested in stock scams. I mean nothing is ever going to beat the Bre-X scam, I hope; what a fascinating story that was -- still waiting for the movie version.
And yes, I've read every post on the Gold and Silver Mining Stocks thread. Helped me a lot!
Anyhoo, the funds I did pick are all no load no fee, as long as I hold them over 90 days, which is my plan anyway. No way do I get the bang for the buck I'd get with juniors, but a basket of the eight funds I do have has performed pretty well, so far, knock on wood, without undue volatility. Upper single digit percentage gains in a couple of weeks ain't bad, and I don't have to sit and watch the tape all day. Just check them in the evening, evaluate and note how they did compared to XAU, HUI and GOX, and tweek accordingly. It's my lazy boy approach. (bg)
BTW, do you ever follow the Clown Free Zone on SI? Precious metals come up regularly, and some of the best minds in the investing cyber universe, IMHO, gather there (yeah, nobody can keep up with the non-stop posting there, so I just click on the header and pick out posts by those I respect, such as Heinz).
Cheers,
Svejk
Hi Josef, I doubt you know me although I'm very familiar with your work on SI. I was thrilled when I saw you post on Bob's board here, a feeling I know was shared by many. I first came across your work on some of the scam stock boards I followed on SI, and immediately bookmarked your profile. (Still have it bookmarked, for that matter). Although I rarely shorted the stocks I did spend a lot of time on those scam boards. I found that looking at things from the short perspective and digging up information on these companies improved my knowledge and perspective in all areas of stock picking. I also found that a lot of the people who I thought were most knowledgeable were spending a lot of time there, and I learned a lot from them. I did post occassionally when I felt I had something to offer (the ability to read an SEC filing does give you an advantage over most of the scam stock promoters), but for the most part I just read and learned.
Personally, I think the macro stuff is just too hard to guess, although there do seem to be people who do it successfully. Some very smart people (Fleckenstein, among others) have been into the miners lately, and it may very well work out. I've got some problems with metals though, especially if the investment is based on the (likely) hypothesis that things are going to hell in a handbasket. Although I know that metals, especially gold, have been a haven in tough economic times in the past, I still don't understand why that wasn't more a function of market psychology than anything else. To the extent that it was psychology, I don't know that that mindset will prevail this time. And to the extent that it was underlying fundamentals, those fundamentals are completely different, and much worse, in the 21st century than they were in the past. Also, while metals may work well in an inflationary environment, I think deflation is at least as likely, if not more so, and the metals don't work nearly as well there. My favorite investment right now is good ol' cash (Treasuries and bank CD's only), which works for everything but the worst of the inflationary scenarios. And if we do go Weimar, the best investment still may not be metals. In that case, the best investment might be a fallout shelter in the mountains. <g>
Like you, I'm not doing much trading. In my case it's because I'm not very good at it. Instead of a shotgun though, I try to use Buffett's elephant gun to pick stocks. According to him, you lay in the bushes until a big elephant comes along, and you bag it. Most of the elephants have been scared away by all the noise and fuss of the past couple of years, but I'm sure they'll be back. In the meantime, I'm just sitting and being patient. To switch Buffett analogies, there are no called strikes in stock picking, so I can afford to wait for a fat pitch.
FWIW, I thought you were overreacting when you left SI. You were right and I was wrong.
