Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI - News) posted a profit of $548 million or $2.86 per share in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared with $362 million or $1.84 per share in the same quarter of 2010. Excluding special items, the company recorded a profit of $491 million or $2.56 per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.24 per share.
Revenues in the quarter grew 19% to $4.9 billion driven by higher demand in trucks, construction, power generation and oil and gas markets in North America as well as strong growth in global mining markets. However, these were partially offset by weaker demand in the construction market in Chinaand the same for power generation in India. Revenues were higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate if $4.8 billion.
Earnings before interest and taxes (:EBIT) were $768 million in the quarter compared with $541 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. Excluding special items, EBIT was $677 million or 13.8% of sales in the quarter.
Segment Accomplishments
Sales in the Engine segment appreciated 23% to $3.1 billion. The increase in revenues was attributable to higher demand for on-highway heavy duty, midrange and light duty engines in North America and strong demand for oil and gas engines in North America and mining engines globally. Segment EBIT was $368 million, or 12.0% of sales, versus $256 million, or 10.3% of sales, in the fourth quarter of 2010.
Sales in the Component segment escalated 19% to $1.1 billion driven by higher demand in North America, Europe, Indiaand Brazil that more than offset weaker demand in China. Segment EBIT was $132 million, or 12.1% of sales, compared with $83 million, or 9.0% of sales
Sales in the Power Generation segment inched up 2% to $920 million. The increase was driven by higher sales of commercial products due to stronger demand in most regions as well as higher demand in North America, China and Europe. Segment EBIT was $87 million, or 9.5% of sales, compared with $92 million, or 10.2% of sales.
Sales in the Distribution segment scaled up 19% to $834 million driven by strong growth in Asia-Pacific region, higher demand for power generation in North America as well as in oil and gas and mining markets. Segment EBIT was $87 million, or 10.4% of sales, compared with $82 million, or 11.7% of sales.
Annual Results
For full year 2011, Cummins reported a profit of $1.85 billion or $9.55 per share, up from $1.04 billion or $5.28 per share in 2010. Excluding special items, the company’s profits were $1.75 billion or $9.07 per share, exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $8.72 per share.
Revenues in the year surged 36% to $18 billion due to strong growth in most geographic regions. It was higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $17.8 billion.
EBIT for the year, excluding special items, was $2.56 billion or 14.2% of sales, compared with $1.66 billion or 12.5% of sales in 2010.
Financial Position
Cummins had cash and cash equivalents of $1.5 billion as of December 31, 2011 compared with $1.0 billion at the end of fourth quarter of 2010. Besides, total long-term debt at the end of 2011 was $658 million versus $709 million at the end of 2010.
Cash flow from operating activities improved to $2.1 billion in 2011 from $1.0 billion in the prior year. Capital expenditures nearly doubled o $622 million from $364 million in 2010.
Guidance
Cummins anticipates revenues to go up by 10% in 2012. It also expects EBIT in the range of 14.5% to 15% of sales during the year. With this, the company expects to reach its target of achieving $30 billion in sales and 18% EBIT in 2015.
Our Take
Cummins is well positioned to benefit from several trends, such as new emission standards, fuel economy improvement and favorable trends for its Power Generation business. New emission regulations provide lucrative opportunities for the company.
However, we are concerned about the strengthening U.S. dollar, macroeconomic environment around the world and tough competitions with companies including Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT - News) and Navistar International Corporation (NYSE:NAV - News). As a result, the company retains a Zacks #3 Rank on its stock, which translates to a short-term (1–3 months) rating of Hold.

When Yum! Brands [YUM 63.84 0.06 (+0.09%) ] reports after the bell, Cramer wants to hear that business in China is still “growing like a weed.” He expects good earnings, but he thinks some people will be disappointed if Yum doesn’t split itself up.
Tuesday, February 7
Cramer is holding his judgment on Coca-Cola [KO 68.08 0.25 (+0.37%) ], which announces its earnings before the open. After Friday’s employment report, he thinks some people may wonder if the economy is now growing too fast and should therefore take profits and swap into something more cyclical.
After the bell, Buffalo Wild Wings [BWLD 70.30 1.52 (+2.21%) ] reports its quarterly results. CEO Sally Smith told Squawk on the Street Friday that business is booming. Cramer thinks the stock remains cheap in comparison to his other favorite restaurants, Chipotle [CMG 372.19 9.37 (+2.58%) ] and Panera [PNRA 154.96 4.63 (+3.08%) ], which also reports Tuesday after the close. He expects Panera to talk about an acceleration of same-store sales during its conference call.
Cramer will also have his eye on Disney [DIS 40.00 1.09 (+2.8%) ] when it announces its earnings after the closing bell. While many feel Disney has peaked, he believes it is a core family holding. For those who are worried, he suggests waiting to see how the earnings are before buying or selling.
Wednesday, February 8
Cramer thinks Ralph Lauren [RL 155.97 2.97 (+1.94%) ] will “do just fine” when it announces its quarterly results ahead of the bell. In fact, he thinks the surprise will be to the upside thanks to cotton costs being down.
After the bell, Cisco [CSCO 20.09 0.29 (+1.46%) ] reports its earnings and Cramer is betting it will be another good quarter.
Also after the close, Whole Foods [WFM 76.25 0.65 (+0.86%) ] will release its quarterly results. Executives of Hain Celestial [HAIN 41.28 0.37 (+0.9%) ], Chipotle and Allergan [AGN 86.08 1.24 (+1.46%) ] all spoke with Cramer recently and based on what he’s hearing—that the natural goods category is growing, people want food with integrity and there’s no slowdown in trying to look better—he thinks there will be an upside surprise for WFM.
Thursday, February 9
There’s a bull market in coffee and Cramer thinks Dunkin Brands [DNKN 28.76 0.89 (+3.19%) ] will be no exception. He expects the company to deliver excellent results when it reports ahead of the open Thursday.
Oil equipment company Lufkin [LUFK 77.93 1.82 (+2.39%) ] also releases its quarterly results before the bell. Cramer said LUFK has been a serial disappointer yet its stock has “roared.” He would take profits Monday morning before the company "has a chance to hurt you."
Cramer thinks Noble Energy [NBL 102.96 0.69 (+0.67%) ], on the other hand, will be “spectacular” when it reports before the bell.
Friday, February 10
Arch Coal [ACI 15.70 0.21 (+1.36%) ] reports before the open. Cramer said he’s stay away since there’s a bear market in coal.
He’ll also be watching when NYSE Euronext [NYX 27.49 0.55 (+2.04%) ] announces earnings ahead of the bell. He wants to know its plans now that the merger with Deutsche Boerse DB1 had been blocked.
Finally, there’s one IPO Cramer thinks is worth focusing on—Caesar’s Entertainment. There is little stock being offered, so he thinks the deal may work. However, he prefers other casino companies to Caesar’s. Therefore he suggests “putting in for the deal, taking some down, and then, no matter where it opens, we're taking the money and running.”

Stocks Climb Wall Of Worry To Multi-Year Highs.
Bloomberg NewsBy John Shipman and Paul Vigna
Based on the stock market’s strong rally, emboldened by the encouraging January jobs report, it would seem investors think earnings growth is poised to bounce back into double-digit percentage gains.
Not so fast.
The fourth-quarter earnings growth rate for the S&P 500 is running at 8.4%, or 5.3% if Apple’s results are excluded, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Thomson says 43 S&P 500 companies have had negative EPS preannouncements for the current quarter compared to 12 positive EPS preannouncements.
“The 3.6 negative to positive ratio is the largest showing since the 3.7 ratio in Q2 2001,” firm says.
Nevertheless, stocks finish near session highs after the market gets the best “upside surprise” it’s had in some time: a blowout jobs report.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 156.82 points, or 1.23%, to 12862.23, its highest close since May 2008. S&P 500 jumps 19.36 points, or 1.46%, to 1344.90.
Nasdaq Comp rises 45.98 points, or 1.61%, to 2905.66, its highest close since December 2000.
Stocks are enjoying their best start to a year in two decades, and the bulls are in firm control here. So forget, for now, the euromess. Forget, for now, the weak profit growth and poor outlooks for the first quarter.
Just enjoy the ride.

HAIN $42 -- Health food and drink maker Hain Celestial Group Inc. said Wednesday that fiscal second-quarter net income rose 23 percent as shoppers picked up its Earth's Best, Celestial Seasonings and MaraNatha health food brands and expanded distribution
Net income for the three months ended Dec. 31 rose to $20 million, or 44 cents per share, from $16.3 million, or 37 cents per share. Excluding one-time costs, net income totaled 52 cents per share. Analysts had been expecting net income of 49 cents per share.
The company's food products, which include brands like Celestial teas, cost more than other foods, making them susceptible to shoppers trading down and spending less in the weak economy. But shoppers focused on health appear to still be buying Hain's brands.
Revenue rose 32 percent to $385.6 million from $291.9 million last year. Analysts expected revenue of $386.6 million.
For the fiscal year, the company confirmed guidance of net income of $1.63 to $1.73 per share on revenue of $1.46 billion to $1.48 billion. Analysts expect net income of $1.70 per share on revenue of $1.49 billion.
Shares of Hain Celestial dipped 17 cents to $38.59 in extended trading following the release of the earnings report. They ended the regular trading session up 18 cents at $38.76.
MasterCard or Visa? One Analyst Weighs In
MasterCard beat its earnings forecast on Thursday, causing its shares to jump in trading, but one analyst said investors should own MasterCard
“We had preferred Visa slightly coming into this year,” said Robert Napoli, an analyst with William Blair & Company. “Visa’s [V 106.06 3.55 (+3.46%) ] outperformed by a little bit, but we actually, at this level, think investors should own both, 50-50. I know that’s a cop-out, but at the current valuation and growth rates, we think that’s reasonable.”
Last year, MasterCard posted 66-percent upside while Visa grew 44 percent. Calling his decision a “close call,” Napoli added that both companies are trading at about the same valuation.
“They’re still top picks of ours,” he said. “You’re not going to get the outsize gains you had, but they’re still attractive.”
MasterCard posted earnings excluding items of $4.03 a share on revenue of $1.72 billion. Analysts had expected the company to report earnings excluding items of $3.91 per share on revenue of $1.72 billion. It also raised its guidance.
MasterCard is currently trading at about 14 times projected 2013 earnings and growing earnings at about 20 percent, Napoli added.
“Just keep the same multiples you have today, you should get 20 percent — you know, about 20 percent upside on each of the stocks,” he said.
During the quarter, the company incurred a $495 million charge related to U.S. merchant litigations about the fees they pay on credit card transactions. Although Napoli said this charge does not spell the end of the litigation story, he does think that the “worst-case scenario is off the table.”
WYNN $117 ..Despite beating profit estimates, Wynn Resorts saw its stock fall after the bell on Thursday after posting fourth quarter earnings. The company saw improvements in both its Macau and Las Vegas operations, but came in a little light on the revenue side, causing an afterhours sell off.
Wynn Resorts saw fourth quarter net income rise 67% to $190.5 million, or $1.52 per share. Adjusted EPS was $1.55, easily above the consensus forecast of $1.28 per share.
Revenues came in a little soft, though. While Wall Street analysts were expecting Wynn to rake in $1.36 billion, the company founded by Steve Wynn grew revenue 8.6% to $1.34 billion. That increase responded to a 9.1% revenue jump in Macau revenues and 7.2% increase in Las Vegas sales.
Adjusted property EBITDA, a measure of cash flow, was up 10.1% to $365.2 million.
Macau revenues hit $995.5 million, or about 74% of the whole pie. Adjusted property EBITDA in the Chinese territory moved up 5.5% to $313.1 million. In Las Vegas, Wynn grew its revenue to $348.4 million, while adjusted EBITDA grew an impressive 30.3% to $89.1 million.
As of the end of the fourth quarter, Wynn Resorts held $1.3 billion in cash on its balance sheet, compared with total debt of $3.2 billion, most of it from the company’s Vegas operations.
Rivals Las Vegas Sands posted earnings on Wednesday, also beating estimates; its stock hit a 52-week high on Thursday. Other major competitors include MGM Resorts, Melco Crown, and the Boyd Gaming Corporation.
Shares in Wynn had fared well in anticipation of the company’s earnings result, closing the session up 2.6% to $120.78. But after hours reaction was negative, sending the stock down 3.2% to $116.88 by 6:00 PM in New York, effectively erasing the day’s gains.
Retailers deliver solid sales gains for January, Still Uneven Divided Picture
Retailers delivered solid sales gains for January, but results divided
By Anne d'Innocenzio, AP Retail Writer | Associated Press – 5 hours ago.. .
NEW YORK (AP) -- Americans were shopping in January, but not every store was feeling the love.
Retailers reported mixed sales results for the month in a sign that U.S. consumers continue to be cautious about when and where they spend their money in the shaky economy
Overall, merchants on Thursday reported a 4.8 percent increase for January, according to the International Council of Shopping Center's tally of 20 retailers. That's above the 3 percent gain that ICSC had expected.
But the results were divided. Retailers like Target that sell basic household goods did well, as did chains like Saks that cater to wealthier shoppers. Meanwhile, Macy's and other stores that sell mid-price clothing posted disappointing results.
"The take away is that the underlying demand is still there, but business continues to be uneven," said Michael P. Niemira, ICSC's chief economist. "It was definitely a divided picture."
The results provide a glimpse into the psyche of the American consumer. January typically is the time when stores offer deep discounts on winter stuff so they can clear it out to make room for spring merchandise. This past January, the average consumer continued to focus more on buying what they need, while unseasonably warm weather made markdowns on puffy coats and furry boots at mid-priced chains unappealing.
Industry watchers look closely at retailers' monthly sales numbers, but only a small number of retailers report those figures. Home Depot, Best Buy and even Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, don't report monthly revenue. A fuller picture of January spending will come in a government retail sales report that will be released Feb. 14.
There's no doubt, though, that retailers have been affected by consumers' finicky shopping habits. January's reports of revenue at stores open at least a year — a gauge of a retailer's health — show that Americans were most willing to shop at discounters and wholesale clubs that offer more of a variety in merchandise.
Costco continued its streak, reporting that revenue at stores open at least a year climbed 8 percent, helped by higher gas prices. Results topped expectations the 6.1 percent predicted by analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.
Target Corp. also said revenue at stores open at least a year rose beat Wall Street estimates. The retailer reported a 4.3 percent in January, compared with the 2.1 percent expected by analysts. The company said in a recording that some of its strongest performers were shoes, health care products and boys' and girls' clothing.
The luxury sector also did well as well-heeled shoppers continued to buy. Saks Inc. posted revenue at stores opened at least a year that rose 10.5 percent during January, driven by sales of women's apparel, handbags and men's accessories.
Meanwhile, stores that sell clothing faced big challenges due in part to the weather. The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. reported a 3.5 percent decrease in revenue at stores opened at least a year. Tony Buccina, president of merchandising, blamed the poor performance on the mild winter.
"January sales were below expectations due to the continuation of the milder weather in our markets, which had an adverse impact on sales of cold-weather merchandise and comprised the majority of our sales shortfall," he said.
Macy's posted a 2.4 percent increase, which was "weaker than anticipated," said the chain's CEO Terry J. Lundgren. Still, the retailer raised its guidance for the fourth quarter and full year based on stronger sales earlier in the quarter. Macy's said it continues to benefit from its move to tailor merchandise to local markets.
"The fourth quarter was our strongest in many years, and demonstrated the continued progress in improving the fundamentals in our business," Lundgren said in a statement.
PIMCO's Bill Gross' February Letter: Life – and Death Proposition

Some excerpts from PIMCO's Mr. Gross for the month of February in which he details a major potential risk of the "zero bound" in rates; for full letter go here.
•Recent central bank behavior, including that of the U.S. Fed, provides assurances that short and intermediate yields will not change, and therefore bond prices are not likely threatened on the downside.
•Most short to intermediate Treasury yields are dangerously close to the zero-bound which imply limited potential room, if any, for price appreciation.
•We can’t put $100 trillion of credit in a system-wide mattress, but we can move in that direction by delevering and refusing to extend maturities and duration.
Yet the imagination and management of the transition ushers forth a plethora of disparate policy solutions. Most observers, however, would agree that monetary and fiscal excesses carry with them explicit costs. Letting your pet retriever roam the woods might do wonders for his “animal spirits,” for instance, but he could come back infested with fleas, ticks, leeches or worse. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, dog-lover or not, preannounced an awareness of the deleterious side effects of quantitative easing several years ago in a significant speech at Jackson Hole. Ever since, he has been open and honest about the drawbacks of a zero interest rate policy, but has plowed ahead and unleashed his “QE bowser” into the wild with the understanding that the negative consequences of not doing so would be far worse. At his November 2011 post-FOMC news briefing, for instance, he noted that “we are quite aware that very low interest rates, particularly for a protracted period, do have costs for a lot of people” – savers, pension funds, insurance companies and finance-based institutions among them. He countered though that “there is a greater good here, which is the health and recovery of the U.S. economy, and for that purpose we’ve been keeping monetary policy conditions accommodative.”
My goal in this Investment Outlook is not to pick a “doggie bone” with the Chairman. He is makin’ it up as he goes along in order to softly delever a credit-based financial system which became egregiously overlevered and assumed far too much risk long before his watch began. My intent really is to alert you, the reader, to the significant costs that may be ahead for a global economy and financial marketplace still functioning under the assumption that cheap and abundant central bank credit is always a positive dynamic. When interest rates approach the zero bound they may transition from historically stimulative to potentially destimulative/regressive influences. Much like the laws of physics change from the world of Newtonian large objects to the world of quantum Einsteinian dynamics, so too might low interest rates at the zero-bound reorient previously held models that justified the stimulative effects of lower and lower yields on asset prices and the real economy.
At the heart of the theory, however, is that zero-bound interest rates do not always and necessarily force investors to take more risk by purchasing stocks or real estate, to cite the classic central bank thesis. First of all, when rational or irrational fear persuades an investor to be more concerned about the return of her money than on her money then liquidity can be trapped in a mattress, a bank account or a five basis point Treasury bill. But that commonsensical observation is well known to Fed policymakers, economic historians and certainly citizens on Main Street.
What perhaps is not so often recognized is that liquidity can be trapped by the “price” of credit, in addition to its “risk.” Capitalism depends on risk-taking in several forms. Developers, homeowners, entrepreneurs of all shapes and sizes epitomize the riskiness of business building via equity and credit risk extension. But modern capitalism is dependent as well on maturity extension in credit markets. No venture, aside from one financed with 100% owners’ capital, could survive on credit or loans that matured or were callable overnight. Buildings, utilities and homes require 20- and 30-year loan commitments to smooth and justify their returns. Because this is so, lenders require a yield premium, expressed as a positively sloped yield curve, to make the extended loan. A flat yield curve, in contrast, is a disincentive for lenders to lend unless there is sufficient downside room for yields to fall and provide bond market capital gains. This nominal or even real interest rate “margin” is why prior cyclical periods of curve flatness or even inversion have been successfully followed by economic expansions. Intermediate and long rates – even though flat and equal to a short-term policy rate – have had room to fall, and credit therefore has not been trapped by “price.”
When all yields approach the zero-bound, however, as in Japan for the past 10 years, and now in the U.S. and selected “clean dirty shirt” sovereigns, then the dynamics may change. Money can become less liquid and frozen by “price” in addition to the classic liquidity trap explained by “risk.”
Even if nodding in agreement, an observer might immediately comment that today’s yield curve is anything but flat and that might be true. Most short to intermediate Treasury yields, however, are dangerously close to the zero-bound which imply little if any room to fall: no margin, no air underneath those bond yields and therefore limited, if any, price appreciation. What incentive does a bank have to buy two-year Treasuries at 20 basis points when they can park overnight reserves with the Fed at 25? What incentives do investment managers or even individual investors have to take price risk with a five-, 10- or 30-year Treasury when there are multiples of downside price risk compared to appreciation? At 75 basis points, a five-year Treasury can only rationally appreciate by two more points, but theoretically can go down by an unlimited amount. Duration risk and flatness at the zero-bound, to make the simple point, can freeze and trap liquidity by convincing investors to hold cash as opposed to extend credit.
Facebook IPO: Who Is Getting Rich?
http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2012/02/01/facebook-ipo-who-is-getting-rich/
Here is a look at some early owners of Facebook stock, and how happy they’ll be in coming months:
Getty ImagesMark Zuckerberg:
Every year, the Facebook co-founder takes on a new personal challenge. This year’s quest may simply be to fend off all the people who want a crack at his wallet.
The Facebook co-founder owns a 28.2% voting stake in his company, according to the IPO filing, though the Zuck also votes Facebook shares held by others, the filing disclosed. Based on our colleagues’ reporting, Facebook is eyeing an IPO valuation of $75 billion to $100 billion — or up to a $28 billion windfall for the 27-year-old CEO. That would buy a lot of Zuckerberg hoodies, or hunting excursions. On paper, Zuckerberg would slot in just around the ninth-richest person in the world, based on Forbes’ recent billionaire rankings. That would make Zuckerberg wealthier than Michael Bloomberg, the founding family of Wal-Mart or hedge-fund maven George Soros, according to the Forbes rankings.
1) #FACEBOOKiPO - $ZNGA up after hours to $11.05 ( had gone as high as $11.30 when revealed in #FB IPO filing that its 12% of sales $FB

Fed's Decision Lifts Utility, Material and Industrial Stocks

Utility, material and industrial companies led the gains in the S&P 500 index on Wednesday, after the Federal Reserve announced it will keep interest rates near zero in the long-term.
"The committee decided to keep the target range for the federal funds rate at zero to one four percent, " said Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke at a news conference.
"We currently anticipate that economic conditions are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate at least until late 2014."
Utility stocks traded higher after the announcement, as investors sought high-yielding assets.
In fact, both the utilities [.GSPU 178.24 2.88 (+1.64%) ] and material [.GSPM 235.23 3.69 (+1.59%) ] sectors reversed course in the afternoon after lagging all morning.
Separately, commodities also rose while the US dollar [.DXY 79.50 -0.37 (-0.46%) ] weakened. Gold futures for February delivery, for example, settled $1,700.1 per ounce, their highest level since December 9.
CF Ammonia Prices Bullish For Nitrogen Producers
http://seekingalpha.com/article/321942-cf-ammonia-prices-bullish-for-nitrogen-producers?source=yahoo
Fertilizer Week magazine (here) reports that leading nitrogen fertilizer producer CF Industries Holdings (CF) has listed major nitrogen fertilizer anhydrous ammonia for sale at the following prices and delivery locations:
Northern Plains (North Dakota) $715/short ton
Midwest (Illinois terminals) $670/short ton
Southern Plains (Oklahoma) $575/short ton
But Gulf (NOLA or New Orleans, LA) ammonia is bid in the $390-400 metric ton area (equivalent to $420-440/short ton).
This shows the high premium U.S. continental producers achieve for delivery of ammonia nearer the main corn and wheat growing areas.
Nitrogen fertilizer equities have been rallying in 2012 due to a modest recovery in corn and wheat prices and a rally in U.S. equity markets in general. But strong production of international urea and ammonia from Trinidad, Russia and the Ukraine and the threat of imported ammonia gave pause for concern for further upside potential.
But according to an industry source, "imported ammonia just can't get there, so it's all about demand vs. producer inventory and supply. The corn belt/NOLA (New Orleans) price spread averages $155, but can stay above $200 for extended periods."
At Tampa, Florida, where phosphate producers such as Mosaic (MOS), PotashCorp (POT) and CF buy ammonia for MAP/DAP production, the trend in ammonia prices has been decidedly down over the past few months:
November 2011 $705/mt (up $55)
December 2011 $650/mt (down $55)
January 2012 $555/mt (down $95)
February delivery prices have not yet been set by Yara International (YARIF) and buyers, but the contracted ammonia price should be down hard when announced imminently.
Beneficiaries of the relatively high corn belt ammonia prices, if they stick, would be, in descending order: Rentech Nitrogen (RNF), CF, then Terra Nitrogen (TNH), Agrium(AGU) and CVR Partners (UAN).

Significant piece of F/A .... " At a glance, what recent earnings reports have revealed about the state of spending on ads"
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/What-earnings-reports-apf-2787147290.html?x=0
Here are highlights of recent quarterly earnings reports from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising:
Jan. 19: Google Inc.'s fourth-quarter earnings report shows that the Internet search leader fetched less money per click on its ubiquitous online ads. That came as an unsettling surprise because investors had assumed a surge in online holiday shopping in the U.S. would enable Google Inc. to charge more for its ads. Instead, the average price decreased by 8 percent from the same time in 2010.
Microsoft Corp. reduces losses in its online services division, which includes the ad-supported Bing search engine. It lost $458 million in the latest quarter, down 18 percent from a loss of $559 million a year earlier. Revenue grew 10 percent to $784 million.
Coming up:
Tuesday: Yahoo Inc.
Jan. 30: Gannett Co.
Feb. 1: IAC/InterActiveCorp, AOL Inc.
Feb. 2: Viacom Inc., The New York Times Co.
Feb. 7: Walt Disney Co., McClatchy Co.
Feb. 8: Time Warner Inc.
Feb. 15: Comcast Corp., CBS Corp.
Feb. 24: The Washington Post Co., Interpublic Group of Cos.
Unknown: Omnicom Group Inc., WPP Group PLC, News Corp.

Forbes Earnings Preview: Intuitive Surgical
By Narrative Science
Analysts have become increasingly bearish on Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) in the month leading up to the company’s fourth quarter earnings announcement schedule for Thursday, January 19, 2012. The consensus analyst estimate has moved from $3.36 a share to the current prediction of earnings of $3.34 a share.
What to Expect:
The current Wall Street consensus is 10.6% higher than the year-ago quarter, when the company reported earnings of $3.02 per share.
The consensus estimate has increased from $3.23 over the past three months. Analysts are projecting earnings of $11.89 per share for the fiscal year.
Revenue is projected to be 24.3% above the year-earlier total of $389.3 million at $483.7 million for the quarter. For the year, revenue is expected to come in at $1.74 billion.
Trends to Watch For:
In each of the last four quarters, the company has seen double-digit year-over-year revenue growth. Over that span, the company has averaged growth of 22.4%, with the biggest boost coming in the most recent quarter when revenue rose 29.7% from the year earlier quarter.
The company has reported increasing profit for three straight quarters. In the most recent quarter, net income rose by 41.3% from the year-earlier period. Net income rose 32.4% in the quarter before that, and 22% in the first quarter.
Analyst Ratings:
Analysts generally think investors should stand pat on Intuitive Surgical, with eight of 13 analysts rating it hold. Analysts have become more cautious about the stock in the last three months.
Competitors:
Intuitive Surgical designs, manufactures, and markets da Vinci Surgical Systems, EndoWrist instruments, and surgical accessories. One of Intuitive Surgical’s main competitors in the healthcare equipment and supplies industry, Medtronic (MDT), will report earnings on February 21, 2012. Other competitors in the healthcare sector include: Stryker (SYK), Synovis Life Technologies (SYNO), and CryoLife (CRY).
Over the past quarter, the stock price has increased from $417.62 on October 19, 2011 to $459.44.
The Week Ahead: Time to Buckle Up, stocks under more pressure , solid analysis (charts won't expand)
Every high-flying market is bound to find patches of rough air, and the charts show a potential decline is in store. However, several plays should defy these trends, as MoneyShow.com senior editor
http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomaspray/2012/01/13/the-week-ahead-time-to-buckle-up/
Though the losses were not severe enough on Friday to confirm a top, the action does suggest that stocks are likely to be under pressure this week. This view is supported by the interest-rate markets, as yields dropped on Friday.
The chart of the ten-year T-Note Yield has completed the flag formation that I discussed in December.
The euro also came under additional pressure on Friday. The weekly uptrend was broken in September, and the close this week was well below the early 2011 lows. This is not a positive sign unless you are planning a European trip. A drop below $1.25 looks likely, with the next major support in the $1.20 area.
This decline comes despite the fact that the European Central Bank seemed encouraged by how well the Spanish and Italian bond auctions were received. Of course, there are quite a few more auctions in the coming months…and there are signs that investors are moving out of euro fixed-income markets, which helps to explain the declining yields of US Treasuries.
Many of the emerging stock markets have rebounded nicely early this year, but the majority have still not completed their bottom formation. It will be important that some of these markets are able to break out to the upside in the next month or so.
Copper prices have moved higher, and are now in a strong seasonal period. Significantly higher prices would be a positive sign for the economy.
Last week’s economic reports were mixed, though the week ended with better-than-expected preliminary numbers on consumer sentiment. There is a heavy slate of earnings reports this week, including many of the large Dow stocks, most of the big banks, and tech giants like Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), and EBay (EBAY). This is likely to provide quite a test for the stock market.
With the US markets closed Monday but overseas markets open, we could see some wild action in the stock index futures. The first report Tuesday is the Empire State Manufacturing Survey, followed Wednesday by the Producer Price Index, Industrial Production, and the Housing Market Index.
On Thursday the pace picks up, with consumer prices, housing starts, jobless claims, and the Philadelphia Fed Survey. There is more data on housing Friday, as we get the report on existing home sales.
WHAT TO WATCH
As I noted earlier and discussed in more detail last Friday morning, the failure of the Advance/Decline lines to make new highs with prices last week was a concern.
The A/D lines have turned down, with last Friday’s action consistent with a further decline. The A/D lines now need to move above last week’s highs to signal a further rally.
How much of a drop could we expect? Probably 2% to 4% in the major averages, as there are many stocks that have charts that look much stronger than the indices. The major A/D lines that I follow have well identified levels of support, which if broken would signal a deeper decline.
The sentiment numbers edged up a bit last week, but are still well below extreme levels. Data suggests there is still plenty of money on the sidelines; hedge funds in particular have not participated.
From the seasonal analysis, a late January decline is generally a good buying opportunity.
S&P 500
The Spyder Trust (SPY) pushed 28 cents above the October 27 high at $129.42 last Thursday. It then closed lower Friday, but was higher for the week.
There is next good support now at $127.20, with the rising 20-period exponential moving average (EMA) at $126.80. The more important support is at $124.73 to $125.
There is initial resistance now in the $129 area, and then at $129.70. The 127.2% Fibonacci retracement target is at $133.26.
Dow Industrials
The daily chart of the Spyder Diamonds Trust (DIA) shows the breakout above the downtrend from last summer’s highs (line a) and then Friday’s close back below it. DIA came fairly close to the 127.2% Fibonacci retracement target at $125.61.
Next support is just a bit lower at $122.40 to $122.60, with the daily uptrend (line b) and the lower Starc- band now in the $120 to $121 area. The key support is now at the December 19 low of $117.05.
The daily relative performance, or RS analysis, has been declining since early December, while the weekly (not shown) shows no signs yet of a top.
The daily on-balance volume (OBV) is more of a concern, as it formed significantly lower highs (line d) last week. A drop through support (line e) would confirm the bearish divergence.
Russell 2000
The iShares Russell 2000 Index Fund (IWM) again tested the major 61.8% Fibonacci retracement resistance in the $77 area (line f) last week before turning lower.
The support at $73.20 to $73.30 needs to hold on a pullback, or the chart will look more negative and may suggest a test of the uptrend (line g) in the $71.70 area.
The daily RS line broke its uptrend (line h) in early January, then formed a lower high last week. It has now diverged from the price action.
The daily OBV needs to move through resistance (line i) to signal a breakout above the $77 level. There is important daily OBV support at line j.
Nasdaq-100
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) lost some of its upside momentum last week, as it failed to move though strong resistance connecting the July and October highs at $58.90. This is still the key level of resistance to overcome.
The daily RS line is still in a short-term uptrend, suggesting it is acting stronger than the S&P 500.
The daily OBV is well above its rising WMA, which is a positive sign.
QQQ has initial support now at $57.50 to $57.20, with much stronger levels at $55.60 to $56.40.
Sector Focus
The iShares Dow Jones Transportation ETF (IYT) moved well above the October highs last week, but still has strong resistance in the $94.70 area. Initial support now sits at $88, with much stronger levels at $85.50 to $86.50.

Enjoy....

The HOLY GRAIL SETUP EXPLAINED
THE HOLY GRAIL SETUP
First of all The “Holy Grail” trade was originally described in Linda Bradford Raschke’s Street Smarts book.
I get questions all the time about the Holy Grail Setup: Well here it is explained and i'll walk you thru it step by step.
I want to let you know that this setup is VERY Easy and Simple and it is very spottable and occurs very often especially during trending markets, UP or DOWN. Also, if you master this pattern, i am confident, that'll you'll be able to pull money out of the market a lot more often.
Tools You will Need to Day Trade the Holy Grail Setup:
1. A 5 minute chart
2. RSI
3. Volume
4. The 20 Bar Simple Moving Average
5. Basic pattern recognition skills
6. An ego that handle a small loss from time to time
First:
You need to spot a trend in a stock (i like to use the 5 minute bars, ten minute bars work really well too). A trend should be either UP or DOWN and you can see that just by eye balling the direction of the price trend after the first hour of trading.
Second:
Once you have decided what the trend is, now you need to be on the look out for RSI, you want to see a high RSI reading of over 70 for long setups. This indicates to me very strong bullish impluse in an uptrend and RSI readings of below 50 for downtrending stocks.
Third:
You want to look at volume to see the conviction of the move. Lots of volume during the first hour will tell you the force of the move UP or DOWN. Tells me how reliable the move is and the conviction of traders.
Fourth:
Now, this is the most important part of the setup and this is where this setup becomes an art and moving away from the 'science' of trading. This will test your eye balling skills, pattern recognition skills and trading prowess.
You wanna see a slow and corrective retrace back to test the 20 bar simple moving average(20 SMA). You wanna see a hammer off that 20MA, a pattern like a triangle, a wedge or a coiling symmetrical triangle, NR7s, a consolidation move of some kind. The operating words here are: slow and corrective retrace to test the 20 SMA.
Really strongly trending stocks will not pullback for long, so you need to be aware of that and be on the lookout for that scenario and that'll tell you what kind of demand/supply you are dealing with.
I always BUY/SHORT into the pattern/pullback but some people like to wait for a complete test and breakout away from the 20 SMA.
Fifth:
I ALWAYS buy HALF a position into the pattern/test and if the trade starts to work(hopefully right away, because 'time is money') and make money then I will add the other half and ride out a bigger move. I prefer to be wrong on a small amount then be wrong on a full position. BUY a half position and test it out, if you start making money then, that the market is agreeing with your assessment and trading decision and tells you to buy more because you are probably correct.
You know you are wrong when the pattern fails to hold the 20 SMA and that's when i just SELL it and MOVE ON to the next trade. Don't get stubborn and hold on to something that isn't working....please just sell it and move on. I don't use stop losses, i just use mental stops but i stick by them like my life depends on it. Trading isn't a game for slackers, dreamers, or optimists. Please just scratch the trade and move on to the next. This pattern is very common and reliable enough that be sure you'll have better success on the next trade.
Always trade in the direction of the overall trend of the market and you could make a killing on this setup. Always, trade with the order flow of the market. Why go LONG when the market is selling off. DON'T FIGHT THE TAPE! Trade holy grail patterns LONG if the market is bullish and trade inverse holy grail patterns in bearish markets.
Creationists often claim that the chances of a modern enzyme forming by random means are astronomically small, and therefore the chances of a complete bacterium (which is composed of hundreds or thousands of such enzymes & proteins) is so near to impossible that it would never happen in the 13 billion years or so since the universe took shape.
The main problem with this argument is that it assumes abiogenesis (the initial formation of life from simpler molecules) was a totally random process. It also assumes that in order for abiogenesis to be successful, a complete microbe would have had to form spontaneously. In fact, the same non-random forces which propel biological evolution also propelled abiogenesis. Specifically, Natural Selection.
The calculation which supports the creationist argument begins with the probability of a 300-molecule-long protein forming by total random chance. This would be approximately 1 chance in 10390. This number is astoundingly huge. By comparison, the number of all the atoms in the observable universe is 1080. So, if a simple protein has that unlikely chance of forming, what hope does a complete bacterium have?
AFFY market cap is cash plus one approval milestone. 360,000-380,000 potential patients on dialysis at $9,000 a year is a 3.3 billion dollar market. If they get 10-20% of the market then sales of 330 - 660 million per year. With a 80% profit margin (should actually be higher) profits would be 240-480 million before they split the profits. Before tax that would be $3 per share per year on a 10% market share and $6 per share a year on 20% market share (in the US only for dialysis patients. I believe overseas AFFY would only get a royalty. If approved and post approval milestones then AFFY could get another approx 350 million in milestone (approx $10 per share). Sales might be lower than that because I believe AFFY will price lower than epo.
I think AFFY won't have as much of a pre-approval discount to potential because the FDA sounded very positive on it and had
extensive discussion on how the drug would be sold upon approval
Should have a nice jump tomorrow and then work higher through March next year.
If approved it will be interesting to see if they can get more than 20% of the market share because of a lower price and a once monthly dosing. If so the earnings numbers could be very alrge because
from Affy web site.
As part of the agreement, Takeda paid Affymax upfront license fees of $122 million and purchased $10 million of equity. Takeda also committed to up to $355 million in clinical and development milestone payments across renal and oncology indications. In addition, Takeda funded the first $50 million of third party expenses related to clinical development of peginesatide. Subsequent to that, the agreement calls for Affymax to pay 30 percent and Takeda to pay the remaining 70 percent of all third-party peginesatide development expenses. Each company is responsible for their own overhead and personnel related expenses. Once the product is on the market, the companies will share profits equally in the United States and Takeda will pay Affymax royalties based on net sales of peginesatide outside the United States.

S&P 500 technical positioning hints a top may be taking shape below the 1300 figure, pointing to forthcoming gains in the safe-haven US Dollar.
THE TAKEAWAY – S&P 500 technical positioning hints a top may be taking shape below the 1300 figure, pointing to forthcoming gains in the safe-haven US Dollar.
S&P 500 – Prices appear to be showing the beginnings of a bearish Descending Triangle chart pattern below the 1300 figure, with support marked by the 23.6% Fibonacci extension at 1225.71. A break below this boundary initially exposes the 38.2% Fib at 1184.14, although the Triangle’s implied measured target is roughly at 1158.52. Alternatively, a break above downward-sloping Triangle resistance exposes 1292.90, the October 27 high.
