Railpower is a leader in specialized energy technology systems for transportation with its GG Series of yard locomotives being its flagship products.
Regarding itself as a 'partner' to the world's railroads, RailPower has created hybrid locomotives that are a 20-year economic and environmental solution for railroads seeking to substantially reduce switching (shunting) costs.
The technology transforms aging switchers with their 50 plus year chassis lives, into modern hybrids, delivering 40-70% cuts in diesel fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions and 80-90% reductions in smog-precursor oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulates. As an added bonus, the hybrid locomotives are exceptionally quiet.
Railpower's GG Series hybrid locomotives feature small, Tier 2 compliant diesel gensets, and large banks of long-life, recyclable batteries, instead of the 500 - 2,000 horsepower (375 - 1,500 kW) engined conventional switchers that are maintenance-intensive and consume very large volumes of fuel.
At a price substantially lower than conventional equivalent switchers, whether they be diesel electric or diesel hydraulic, the GG Series units are tailored for duty cycles experienced in the smallest industrial yards right up to those experienced in the giant North American Class 1's yard facilities.
Early adoption of the technology has been stimulated in the United States by the Texas Emissions Reduction Program which was modeled on the Carl Moyer Emissions Reduction Program in California.
Railpower, with its eye on future products, is examining how the basic hybrid technology can be adapted for transit use and shortline switching where distances can be up to 70 miles.
Railpower continues to develop its "rDirect" power conditioning technology for distributed and remote power generation technologies such as microturbines. The more efficient and cost-effective rDirect technology is a key component of Railpower's patented Compressed, Integrated Natural Gas Locomotive ('CINGL) which studies conducted with major industry players estimate cost savings of 27 -33% over the life of the locomotive. This is achieved while eliminating 99% of the pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the use of an aero-derivative gas turbine engine.
Railpower Technologies Corp. is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the Symbol "P".
