TUCSON, Ariz ., June 27, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been awarded $145.4 million by the U.S. Navy for production and enhancement of its Rolling Airframe Missile program.
Nearly $105.5 million will go to the development of Rolling Airframe Missile Block 2, a kinematic and sensor upgrade to the company's Rolling Airframe Missile Block 1. Rolling Airframe Missile is one of the world's most modern ship self-defense weapons, designed to provide exceptional protection for ships of all sizes.
"Rolling Airframe Missile Block 2 significantly increases the effective range and maneuverability via a larger dual-thrust rocket motor and independent four-canard control actuator system," said Todd Callahan, Raytheon Missile Systems program director for Rolling Airframe Missile. "These enhancements extend Rolling Airframe Missile's capability against a wide variety of threats, including the evolving, highly maneuverable anti-ship cruise missiles.
"When coupled with our continuous efforts to improve Rolling Airframe Missile's performance and lethality," Callahan explained, "this Block upgrade program will yield a new level in ship self-protection for the U.S. warfighter as well as navies throughout the world."
Operating under a cooperative Memorandum of Understanding for the Block 2 system demonstration and development program, Raytheon's German industry partner, RAM-System GmbH, has been funded to develop an evolved missile radio frequency sensor that will provide increased sensitivity and discrimination in order to successfully defeat targets utilizing next generation guidance radars. The combined U.S.-German Rolling Airframe Missile Block 2 system demonstration and development program is scheduled to reach initial operating capability in 2011.
Rolling Airframe Missile is the U.S. Navy's premier supersonic, lightweight, quick-reaction, fire-and-forget missile. The system is ideally suited to counter the modern Anti-Ship Missile threat and has been in the U.S. fleet since the early '90s. Rolling Airframe Missile Block 1 incorporates a new image-scanning seeker with the added capability of autonomous infrared- all-the-way guidance, thus countering advanced anti-ship missiles that do not employ on-board radar seekers. This new seeker also enables increased capability against crossing targets and the ability to engage fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft as well as surface targets. Enhanced digital signal processing further provides increased resistance to countermeasures and superior performance in severe infrared background conditions.
Rolling Airframe Missile is a joint cooperative program between the United States and Germany . Rolling Airframe Missile is currently deployed on, or planned for, the LPD 17 class, LHA 1 and LHA 6 class, LHD 1 class, LSD 41 class, CV 63, CVN 68 class and the Littoral Combat Ship in the U.S. fleet and on nearly every German warship. Additional customers include Korea, Greece , Egypt and the United Arab Emirates . Rolling Airframe Missile Block 2 will be compatible with existing Rolling Airframe Missile launching systems and the SeaRAM Anti-Ship Missile Defense System.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., June 27, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- The Team JCA partnership led by Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and EADS CASA North America is contesting the Joint Cargo Aircraft selection process in a protest filed June 22 with the Government Accountability Office.
"Following a 'debrief' from the U.S. Army, Team JCA carefully considered the Army's selection process and weighed the merits and challenges of an award protest," said Jon Jones, president of Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems. "We decided that a protest was necessary based on crucial portions of our proposal that were either incorrectly measured or not considered during the source selection process.
"We took this action to understand what it takes to meet the needs of our customer and to better support our nation's warfighters," Jones said.
Team JCA is offering the EADS CASA C-295 military transport for the JCA requirement. The protest centers on three key points:
-- The JCA source selection board rated Team JCA equal to its competitor
on all non-price factors in its criteria, including technical,
logistics, management/production and past performance.
-- Raytheon beat its competitor's price by more than 15 percent
-- There were errors in the specific evaluation of data and the application of the evaluation criteria
"By the best value criteria in the JCA request for proposals, we are convinced that Raytheon has the best value solution," Jones said.
In military service with coalition partners worldwide, the C-295 is completing its seventh year of JCA-type missions with the armed services of Spain , Poland , Algeria , Jordan , Brazil , Portugal and Finland . EADS CASA has 55 aircraft on order, 32 of which have already been delivered.

TUCSON, Ariz ., June 28, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- NetFires LLC , a joint venture between Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) Missile Systems business and Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) Missiles and Fire Control, successfully demonstrated the ability of its Precision Attack Missile warhead to penetrate a fortified bunker target, a key program requirement.
The Precision Attack Missile is part of the Non Line-of-Sight-Launch System currently under development for the U.S. Army's Future Combat System and the U.S. Navy's Littoral Combat Ships.
The testing was performed at the Redstone Arsenal Technical Test Center, Huntsville, Ala., against an earth and timber bunker target. The missile simulation test verified that the Precision Attack Missile warhead will detonate upon impact and perforate the bunker wall structure as required. All primary and secondary test objectives were met during the test. This successful "Dynamic Bunker" test provides data to support follow-on Army and Navy warhead testing.
"This represents a continual step forward in delivering precision fires with maximum lethality to the Army and Navy combat forces," said Col. Doug Dever, U.S. Army's Non Line-of-Sight-Launch System project manager.
The multi-target warhead and fuze, developed by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, applies cutting-edge technology to provide diverse mission, multi-target capability for the Non Line-of-Sight-Launch System. It possesses both a shaped-charge capability, to defeat armored targets, and a blast fragmentation capability for use against buildings, bunkers, small boats, lightly armored vehicles and other soft targets.
To deliver the multipurpose warhead for precision-strike targeting, the Precision Attack Missile is equipped with a dual mode seeker (imaging infrared and semi-active laser), as well as GPS and inertial guidance.
The Non Line-of-Sight-Launch System is one of the 14 Future Combat System's core systems. It will operate as a part of the Future Combat System systems-of-systems to meet the requirements of the Army's future brigade combat teams and provide increased capability for the current force's modular brigade combat teams. It is also one of the key littoral combat ship mission modules. Compared to systems with equivalent firepower (kills per combat load), the Non Line of-Sight-Launch System provides a modular, highly deployable and flexible precision fires capability to the U.S. Army, Navy and joint maneuver forces for a very low life-cycle system cost.

CLEVELAND --(BUSINESS WIRE)--
With the Air Transport Association forecasting a record number of travelers taking to the skies this summer (209 million between June and August), airport check-in and security lines promise to be longer and more frustrating than ever. Against this backdrop, private jet travel, long viewed as an option only for executives at the nation's largest corporations, is gaining followers among business and leisure travelers who can experience the service through redesigned jet "card" programs. These programs offer a more accessible alternative to fractional ownership. Flight Options, for instance, the nation's second largest private jet company, has seen enrollment surge in its JetPASS Ultimate Travel membership program, with recently compiled May enrollment figures more than doubling versus the same period in 2006.
While the card programs are not a realistic option for those who exclusively book economy-class commercial flights (JetPASS members make an initial purchase of $100,000 worth of private jet flight time), the flexibility and tiered pricing of JetPASS can compare surprisingly favorably for frequent business- and first-class travelers. For instance, a trip on a seven-seat light jet from Teterboro to Nantucket could cost as little as $4,246 in the program, or only $708 per seat (even when only six seats are used) - ideal for a family or group of business associates.
The redesigned JetPASS Ultimate Travel Membership program from Flight Options recently celebrated its first anniversary and is the only private jet card with peak / off-peak tiered pricing, one-way and round-trip options, all with access to the consistency and levels of service associated with a fractional operator. The initial $100,000 deposit (renewed at $50,000 ) gives members immediate access to the entire Flight Options' fractional fleet, allowing them to specify the aircraft that best suits their needs for a particular flight. Any unused balance is fully refunded so that members ultimately only pay for occupied hours. The program discounts round-trip travel, and recently introduced tiered pricing that benefits members willing to fly on a Thursday or Saturday - an especially appealing option for leisure travelers.
Flight Options' fractional fleet includes the most popular and top-performing personal jets on the market. They range from light-cabin jets ideal for transporting two to a Caribbean island retreat to large-cabin aircraft that will fly the entire family to Cabo San Lucas or another a dream vacation destination.

Flight Options is an industry leader in private aviation safety, as well, having been selected by the FAA as the first fractional provider to participate in the Aviation Safety Action Program. They have ended up being one of three major defense contactors left, interesting article on this in last weeks Economist, it might be a good item to cut and paste on this thread.
Not a whole lot to talk about really. It's kind of a Peter Lynch/Magellan Fund kind of equity that you buy or collect a load of and sit on forever.
Dad "..tomorrow sock'd.." quite a chunk of it over a period of time many years ago, which was obviously a shrewd move. Some of his investment club members followed suit, and they all seem to drive nice rides and live in non-bungalo's - on acres as opposed to lots.
The annual report on a company like this is great stuff, if you're having trouble getting to sleep some evening. "...ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.............."!! But, the dividends and gains are fun to consider looking at the long term chart.
It's certainly diversified broadly enough to take major Greenspurt hiccups out of the equation.

One of the nicest things about Raytheon, was that most young naval officers in WWII were smart enough to buy and/or collect a boatload of it during or shortly after the war.
Seeing those big radar screens whirling around up there on the masts were a pretty good hint of things to come.
I always admired my Dad (CMDR USNR) for his ability to correctly evaluate anything he came in contact with. Hence, his Professionl Engineering registration in Valuation and Planning.
Whenever I wanted to know about a listed technical enterprise to collect, all I had to do was ask him. Sure beats grinding over the small print.
What a company....!!
