Pope & Talbot Inc. received permission from a Canadian court Friday to file bankruptcy in the United States.
The Portland-based pulp and lumber company (Pink Sheets: PTBT) sought protection earlier this week under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, the Canadian equivalent of a Chapter 11.
It was the third-largest filing ever by an Oregon company. Pope & Talbot had $682 million in assets at the time of its last regulatory filing.
The company, which has been hampered by a crushing housing slowdown and a strong Canadian dollar, did not indicate if a U.S. filing was imminent.
Pope & Talbot also disclosed that it will return to court "shortly" to get approval for a short-term loan from its creditors. As reported in today's Business Journal, the company is dangerously short on the cash it needs to continue operating while in bankruptcy.
If it's unable to secure such financing, Pope & Talbot could be forced to shut its doors and liquidate assets, a worst-case scenario for employees and creditors.
In an affidavit filed with the court, Chief Financial Officer Neil Stuart said the company may need to file a Chapter 11 in order to secure the interim financing, which is known as debtor-in-possession financing.
Pope & Talbot employs 2,300 in the United States and Canada. The company has 280 employees in Oregon -- 180 at a mill in Halsey, Ore., and another 100 at its Portland headquarters.
Shares closed down 12 percent at 15 cents. The stock traded for $8 as recently as May.
sorry they got permission to file now....they require dip financing...assume they will
bankruptcies usually last a year for those companies working out deals with creditors and employees (rollback of salaries and benefits)
The company also disclosed that it may file for Chapter 11 or Chapter 15 protection in the United States. Chapter 15 is a cross-border bankruptcy.
got a link showing that they have applied for chapter 11/15 in the states ? ? ?? tyia
any idea how long air canada shareholder were safe till they lost it all...i want back in but am a lil freaked out now...TYIA
You may get a lower share price now that they filed bk in the us under chapter 11 and obtaining dip financing...meaning shareholders will get nothing....maybe another bounce on monday.
getting cheap moved it to .12 for now...hope for even more of a shake..GLTA
.15 bid gone, gl on your fill at .14
yep more covering....hate when the bid n ask are the same...cant tell whats going on....got a bid in @ .14...GLTA
Shares dumping on bid. Watch for dip and bounce
very risky play i will admit ...but has a very good chance of a short term return...i got out @ .14 ..wish i held...if they shake er down around .12 i will jump back in....GLTA
yes i know...low was 6 cents.....just watched....thought there would be more of a sell off but didn't happen and didn't play the dead cat bounce....think this is potentially a good play if they sell their assets there may be something leftover for shareholders...and that's why some shorts are covering and why others got in since only 16 million shares o/s market cap is about $2 million..
have u been looking at l2 at all????......they are covering like mad right now ..almost 300% up from it's low
shorts don't have to cover if this is sold and nothing is left for the shareholders after the creditors.
labs covering @ the bid..n still not many retail sellers...shake it up..i want back in>>GLTA
dont know if it will dip under 14...dang mm's shake er up..i want back in
wow, quite a jump there...
yep good call ...all of my nss plays...never cover for more than one day at a time...they will try n flush the weak n lower the pps today i think....hope to jump back in around .10-.11 ..GLTA
Nice trade, I let go of my trades too. Let's hit the next run
it gives them time.....this is just a nss play for me.....2 mill short n the mm's are covering...up 41% nuff said
this is the equivalent to chapter 11...only plus to this is that they can sell all or parts of the company without creditors breathing down their necks...but, if they fail a sale, creditors will come and get everything and the shareholders will receive nothing...like Stelco and Air Canada.
