Midland Basin Update, PXD announced production from three horizontal Wolfcamp D wells in Midland and Martin Counties that produced at very high 24-hour IP rates, although the 30 day average rates show a very steep decline.

The Hutt C #4H in Midland County produced at a 24-hour IP rate of 2,128boe/d, but the 30-day average rate of 856boe/d (69% oil) was just 40% of the well's 24-hour IP. The Scharbauer Ranch #201H in Martin County displayed a similar decline trajectory. PXD's third Wolfcamp D well produced at a 24-hour IP rate of 3,156boe/d (69% oil), which is the highest IP rate from a horizontal well in the Midland Basin, although we do not have any longer-term production data on this well yet.

Wolfcamp D results from other operators show much less of a decrease in 30 day averages relative to the peak 24-hour rates and many of these wells had a higher 30 day average than PXD's wells despite much lower 24-hour IP rates. Although PXD's Wolfcamp D wells are up to 50 miles West of the other activity. PXD's Wolfcamp A and B wells drilled in Martin and Midland Counties showed much more robust 30-day rates relative to PXD's Wolfcamp D wells in this area.

Pioneer Natural Resources Alaska, Inc, to Caelus Energy
Alaska LLC.

The subsidiary produced an average of 4,000
Boe/d over the first 9 months of 2013. The assets had 44
MMBoe of proved reserves at YE-12. The sale is expected to
result in a noncash loss of ~$350 MM.

I believe this is an attractive transaction that will help PXD fund growth from its significant Permian inventory.

Pioneer Natural Resources Reports Year-End 2012 Proved Reserves and Finding Costs

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Pioneer Natural Resources Company (NYSE:PXD) (“Pioneer” or “the Company”) today announced that the Company added proved reserves totaling 161 million barrels oil equivalent (MMBOE) during 2012 from discoveries, extensions, improved recovery and technical revisions of previous reserve estimates. These drillbit proved reserve additions equate to replacing 264% of Pioneer’s full-year 2012 production of 61 MMBOE (includes proved reserves used for field fuel of 3 MMBOE and production of 1 MMBOE from South Africa prior to its sale). The drillbit finding and development (F&D) cost related to proved reserve additions was $17.72 per barrel oil equivalent (BOE).

The NYMEX prices used for 2012 proved reserves reporting purposes were $94.84 per barrel for oil and $2.76 per million British thermal units (MMBtu) for gas. The oil price for 2012 was slightly below the oil price used to calculate proved reserves for 2011 ($96.13 per barrel), while the gas price for 2012 was significantly lower than the gas price used to calculate proved reserves for 2011 ($4.12 per MMBtu). The significant decline in gas prices resulted in moving proved undeveloped (PUD) gas reserves to probable reserves in the Raton field in southeastern Colorado, the Edwards Trend in South Texas and the Barnett Shale play in North Texas. As a result, the Company recognized negative price revisions of 82 MMBOE during 2012.

The Company’s successful horizontal Wolfcamp Shale drilling results in 2012 has led the Company to shift more of its future drilling activity in the Spraberry field from vertical drilling to horizontal drilling. As a result, Pioneer no longer expects to drill a significant number of its previously recorded vertical PUD locations within the next five years. Consequently, in compliance with Securities and Exchange Commission guidelines, 80 MMBOE of PUD reserves associated with vertical drilling locations in the Spraberry field have been moved to probable reserves. This reduction in proved reserves is reflected in technical revisions. Based on the horizontal drilling conducted by Pioneer to date in the Spraberry field, sufficient production data is not yet available to support the entire replacement of the vertical PUD reserves that were removed in 2012 with horizontal PUD reserve additions. Reserve additions during 2012 include 37 MMBOE of proved reserves added as a result of horizontal Wolfcamp Shale drilling in the Spraberry field. The Company expects to gain additional production data during 2013 from its expanding horizontal drilling program which is expected to support the addition of incremental horizontal proved developed (PD) and PUD reserves during 2013 and beyond.

As mentioned above, technical revisions of previous reserve estimates for 2012 included the movement of 80 MMBOE of vertical PUD reserves to the probable category. This negative impact was partially offset by performance improvements totaling 53 MMBOE across Pioneer’s asset portfolio, resulting in net negative technical revisions of 27 MMBOE for the year. Technical revisions are included in the calculation of the drillbit F&D cost.

Pioneer’s proved reserve additions from the drillbit and acquisitions totaled 170 MMBOE for 2012. After taking into account the Company’s production for 2012 of 61 MMBOE, negative pricing revisions of 82 MMBOE and proved reserves of 4 MMBOE that were removed due to the divestitures of South Africa and certain Barnett Shale properties during 2012, proved oil and gas reserves totaled 1,086 MMBOE as of year-end 2012. Including negative pricing revisions, the Company replaced 144% of production at an all-in F&D cost of $34.46 per BOE.

As of December 31, 2012, all of Pioneer’s proved reserves are in the United States and 58% are classified as PD. Approximately 45% of the Company’s proved reserves are oil, 21% are NGLs and 34% are gas. Pioneer’s proved reserves are long-lived with a total reserves-to-production ratio of 18 years and a PD reserves-to-production ratio of 10 years.

Total costs incurred during 2012 were $3.0 billion, which included exploration and development spending, acquisitions, asset retirement obligations, capitalized interest and geological and geophysical G&A. Of this amount, $2.8 billion was attributable to development and exploration activities.

The commodity prices used for 2012 resulted in a pre-tax present value of future net cash flows discounted at 10% (PV-10) of $8.3 billion for Pioneer’s proved reserves.

Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc. and Ryder Scott Company, L.P., independent reserve engineering firms, audited the proved reserves of significant fields. These audits covered properties representing 95% of Pioneer’s total proved reserves at year-end 2012.

Pioneer Natural Resources Announces $1.7 Billion Horizontal Wolfcamp Shale Transaction with Sinochem

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Pioneer Natural Resources Company (NYSE:PXD) (“Pioneer” or “the Company”) today announced that the Company has signed an agreement with Sinochem Petroleum USA LLC, a U.S. subsidiary of the Sinochem Group (“Sinochem”), to sell 40% of Pioneer’s interest in approximately 207,000 net acres leased by the Company (“joint interest area”) in the highly prospective horizontal Wolfcamp Shale play in the southern portion of the Spraberry Trend Area Field for a total price of $1.7 billion. At closing, Sinochem will pay $500 million in cash to Pioneer, before normal closing adjustments, and will pay the remaining $1.2 billion by carrying a portion of Pioneer’s share of future drilling and facilities costs (“drilling carry”).

The transaction is expected to close during the second quarter of 2013, subject to customary governmental approvals. Under the agreement, Sinochem will acquire approximately 82,800 net acres of leasehold held by Pioneer for all Wolfcamp depths and deeper horizons. Pioneer retains 60% of its interest in the Wolfcamp depths and deeper horizons, with Sinochem receiving 40% of Pioneer’s interest. Pioneer will continue as operator and will conduct all leasing, drilling, completion, operations and marketing activities in the joint interest area. The joint interest area covers defined portions of Upton, Reagan, Irion, Crockett and Tom Green Counties in Texas. Pioneer retains its current working interests in all horizons shallower than the Wolfcamp horizon.

In addition to funding its own drilling obligations for the horizontal Wolfcamp Shale, Sinochem has agreed to fund 75% of Pioneer’s portion of drilling and facilities costs after closing until the $1.2 billion of drilling carry is fully utilized. Pioneer has six years to utilize the drilling carry, subject to extension under certain circumstances. At closing, Sinochem will pay its 40% share of net expenditures in the joint interest area from the December 1, 2012 effective date of the transaction to the closing date. Pioneer and Sinochem have agreed to a development plan which forecasts the drilling of 86 horizontal Wolfcamp Shale wells during 2013, increasing to 120 wells in 2014 and 165 wells in 2015.

To the extent Sinochem elects to participate in any vertical wells that are drilled in the joint interest area after the effective date, Sinochem will receive its share of production and costs from the Wolfcamp and deeper horizons based on the anticipated reserve contribution from the Wolfcamp and deeper intervals relative to anticipated reserves from all completed intervals. Pioneer’s and Sinochem’s participation in vertical wells will be based on each party’s interest without any drilling carry being applied. Pioneer will retain 100% of its existing vertical production in the joint interest area.

Pioneer has successfully drilled and completed 39 horizontal wells in the Wolfcamp Shale joint interest area through December 31, 2012. Of these 39 wells, 22 wells were on production and 4 additional wells were flowing back. Of the 22 wells on production, 20 wells were completed in the B interval and 2 wells were completed in the A interval. Pioneer’s net horizontal Wolfcamp Shale production in the joint interest area averaged approximately 2,000 barrels oil equivalent per day (BOEPD) in 2012, with a year-end exit rate of approximately 5,000 BOEPD.

William F. Hannes, formerly EVP South Texas Operations, will become EVP of the newly formed Southern Wolfcamp Asset Team. This asset team will focus on executing the drilling program in the horizontal Wolfcamp Shale joint interest area.

Danny L. Kellum, EVP Permian Operations, will focus his attention on Pioneer’s remaining Permian activities, with executive responsibility for the Permian Asset Team and Permian integrated services. This asset team will focus on executing the horizontal and vertical drilling programs over the remainder of Pioneer’s Permian acreage.

Jay P. Still, EVP Domestic Operations, will add executive responsibility for Pioneer’s South Texas operations to his current responsibilities for the Company’s Mid-Continent, Rockies, Alaska and Barnett Shale assets.

A little more recent information...

Pioneer Natural Resources saw major stock jumps recently. As we all know, there is always a good reason why stocks make big jumps. So why did PXD see the jumps this time around? Travis Hoium lets us in on the secret.



What: Shares of oil & gas explorer Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE: PXD ) jumped 10% today after the company released earnings.

So what: Revenue during the third quarter jumped 40% to $610.5 million and adjusted earnings per share were $1.35, topping estimates of $0.87. During the fourth quarter, management expects to produce 136 to 141 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.



In the next year, management in working to expand their operations and production even further. This could be mean even more growth for this stock in 2012. Watch this stock, it could pop again, and may be worth holding long term.

Looks like they are going to see continued upside as well.

Although I have not been covering many of the MLP's, it is hard to discount the run these names have had, all while paying large dividends. Pioneer Southwest Energy Partners (PSE) is one of those names. This company was formed by Pioneer Natural Resources Company (PXD) and now has non-operated interests in over 1100 wells in the Spraberry field. These assets are located in the coveted Permian Basin of west Texas. As of the end of 2010, Pioneer Southwest had approximately 52 MMBoe, which is up 8 MMBoe from 2009. Some 85% of these resources are liquids. Average daily production for 2010 was 6507 Boe. This year, Pioneer Southwest plans to drill 40-45 wells on a two rig program. Well costs are estimated at $1.4 million. Pioneer Southwest is estimating production growth of over 5%. Investing in MLP's does pose many questions going forward. Although tax implications make MLP's favorable investments, they are also heavily hedged to support the large dividend. If an investor believes that oil prices will continue to make new highs for some time, and is looking for much larger possibilities for growth, this may not be the investment for you. But if an investor is looking for income, or would like protection to the downside with his/her investments, it may be the way to go. Either way, MLP's will continue to benefit from higher prices, and will be shielded by large dips in pricing to the downside.

J.P. Morgan is out with its report on Pioneer Natural Resources (NYSE: PXD), raising its PT from $101.50 to $116.50.

In a note to clients, J.P. Morgan writes, "PXD has large, high-potential positions in the Eagle Ford Shale and Spraberry plays. Continued positive well results from PXD and other producers in the Eagle Ford could drive the stock higher. In the Spraberry, the company's deeper drilling to the Lower Wolfcamp and Strawn formations enhance the economics of that play. If it can add the Atoka as well, PXD could enhance the economics even further. Horizontal Wolfcamp in and around its Spraberry acreage could add meaningfully to its drilling inventory. We are increasing our price target to $116.50 from $101.50 based on our calculated NAV of $116.72/share."

Pioneer cuts output estimate

Pioneer Natural Resources cut its first-quarter oil production estimate citing extreme weather in the first half of February and an unplanned third-party outage.

The Irving, Texas-based company now expects to produce an average of 111,000 to 113,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, lower than its previous forecast of 114 to 118 Mboed.

The company said the extreme cold in Texas, Kansas and Colorado caused pipeline freeze-ups, power outages and limited access to well locations.

Operations recovered fully only by early this month, Pioneer said in a statement, according to a Reuters report.

The company said the outage at a third-party fractionator will lower quarterly production by about 1 Mboed.

However, the company expects production this year to increase between 15% and 19% at 125 to 130 Mboed on the back of ramped-up drilling operations in Spraberry and Eagle Ford shales.

The company now expects first-quarter production costs to rise to between $13 and $14 per barrel oil equivalent from $11.75 to $13.75 boe.

Pioneer, with a market value of $11.7 billion, said it will record a one-time gain of between $630 million and $650 million in the first quarter from the previously announced sale of its Tunisia units.

THE RATINGS GAME: Citi Cuts Natural Gas Producers Ahead Of Spring

NEW YORK (Dow Jones) - Citi took a cooler view toward four oil and gas producers Wednesday as its analysts cut ratings ahead of warmer weather and a double-digit run-up in share prices this year.

While Citi complained that valuations are a bit too rich for the quartet, it also upped its price targets and lifted its profit outlook for some of the names.

Citi lowered Chesapeake Energy (CHK), EOG Resources (EOG), Quicksilver Resources (KWK) and Southwestern Energy Co. (SWN) to hold from buy. All four stocks are up more than 15% so far this year despite a difficult start to the broader market.

"We believe that investors should wait for better entry points into the exploration and production space as we approach the end of winter," Citi analyst Gil Yang said.

While Yang is bullish on the sector for the remainder of the year, the analyst is looking for more attractive prices in the stocks as the companies move from the heating season to the warmer months.

Yang said he prefers names that have lagged, such as Anadarko Petroleum (APC), Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD), and Forest Oil Corp. (FST).

Citi raised its price target on Chesapeake to $48 a share from $45 a share, and upped its 2008 profit target for the company to $3.97 a share from $3.59 a share.

EOG's new price target is $112 a share, up from $100 a share, with a 2008 profit target unchanged at $5.42 a share.

Quicksilver Resources's new price target is $36, up from $34, with a new 2008 profit target of 78 cents a share, down from $1.01 a share.

Citi also upped its price target on Southwestern Energy Co. to $70 a share from $60 a share, and kept its 2008 profit target unchanged at $1.27 a share.

Meanwhile, rival research firm Credit Suisse chimed in with actions both on Quicksilver Resources and Chesapeake.

Credit Suisse raised its target price on Chesapeake to $42 a share from $39 a share, with a new 2008 profit target of $3.10 a share from $2.93 a share. Credit Suisse praised the company for beating its target of 80 cents a share with adjusted net income of 93 cents a share.

"The earnings beat was driven by better production, narrower gas differentials, lower operating costs, higher marketing and services income...offset by higher general and administrative and interest expenses," Credit Suisse analysts said.

Credit Suisse also flagged strong growth in Quicksilver's results, with a new 2008 earnings target of $1.09 a share, from $1.02 a share and a richer price target of $3 a share, up from $22 a share.
