NEWS:
Pinnacle Data Systems(PNS) – 7/31/2011
Pinnacle Data Systems(PNS) recently announced their deal with IBM. The stock skyrocketed but questions began arising what the deal will compromise of leading to a drop in stock price. What does this new deal with IBM really mean?
NEW HIRING: One way we can tell what the company is doing is the job hirings. The most interesting job posting is for “Product/Program Realization Manager” which states “PDSi is actively looking for a Product/Program Realization Manager who will be responsible for implementing assigned products and programs utilizing PDSi’s New Product Introduction process through manufacturability...” But that is not the end of it all. The company also hired a “Shipping Associate” for the express purpose of shipping stuff. All these job ad postings were after the IBM deal. Another interesting post was for the job of Telecom Engineer whose requirements needed to be 3-5 years experience in abilities to tune and test microwave circuits, filters, amplifiers, detectors, mixers, controlled devices, and operate related RF test equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power meters, oscilloscopes, etc. Candidate must be able to troubleshoot digital and analog circuitry to the component level.” So this means that Pinnacle will be modifying servers by either making circuit boards, filters or amplifiers for IBM.
CLOUD COMPUTING: So they are hiring, but what they are building for the telecommunications industry? Well servers are being required for new cloud computing technologies. For every 800 smartphones sold 1 server is required. IBM has contracts with large companies including verizon and others who require these servers. The servers need to be able to do virtualization(process where a server is broken up to run 800 computers at a time). These servers are something of a specialty of Pinnacle Data Systems since they make carrier grade servers. Their specialties in servers include amplifiers, filters, power distribution and fiber optics.
FUTURE PROFITS: It is important to note that even though these server products are going to be sold in mass amount(based on their hiring), the real profit will come AFTER the initial sale of these servers because of servicing of the machines. 49% of the last quarterly profit was based on service and maintainnence of servers sold($4.7 million). The ability to service telecommunications servers for IBM is a leap forward beyond the initial sale. We keenly understand Mr. Bair when he says “Electronic Repair Services Segment, this opens up access to whole new markets seeking to extend the life-cycle of IBM-based technologies.” It is similar to people giving away elevators just to have service contracts.
THE TECHNICALS: The stock price of the stock has taken a dip after the company surged. The company only has 6.8 million floats of the company and 6 million shares were exchanged above $1.74 with a high of the max price of $3.41 on 7/26/11. The stock is curently trading at a heavy discount of $1.59 per share(7/31/2011). The stock has gone lower since the markets bearish sentiment due to GOP-Democrat debate, uncertainty about the size of the contract and profit taking. When the new IBM product launch for the server OEM product(s) drops this stock should go significantly higher.

1) PNS Enters OEM Agreement With IBM new DD
COLUMBUS, OH, Jul 26, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Pinnacle Data Systems, Inc. ("PDSi") PNS +0.43% announced today that it has entered into an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) agreement with IBM. This agreement provides PDSi with the ability to design and sell products based upon IBM's System p and System x technologies.
John D. Bair, PDSi's Chairman of the Board, President and Chief Executive Officer, stated, "PDSi's exceptional engineering and operational capabilities complement IBM's product and technology offerings. This agreement provides PDSi access to IBM's market leading technologies that can be leveraged across all three of our targeted market segments. For Embedded Computing, with an estimated market size of $5 billion, we are working on developing NEBS certified products for the telecommunications ("telco") industry, as well as products designed for other applications. This also broadens the technology platforms we can offer in the more than $100 billion Integrated / ODM Computing Solutions segment as we design and build custom solutions for customers in the telco, medical, and other industries with specialized requirements such as ruggedization. In the Electronic Repair Services Segment, this opens up access to whole new markets seeking to extend the life-cycle of IBM-based technologies."
Mr. Bair continued. "The key to our past Product success has been partnerships in value-added design and integration services. Maintaining and developing new partnerships with industry leading technology companies provides us access to products and technology we can use in targeted Integration opportunities -- both as a Value Added Reseller, or VAR, and as an Original Equipment Manufacturer, or OEM."
Timothy J. Harper, PDSi's Chief Operating Officer, added, "We have substantially grown our Service business over the past year, and our current focus is on driving profitable growth in our Products business. This agreement is a key strategic milestone positioning PDSi for growth. This agreement not only adds to our capability in developing leading technology product offerings, but also opens up new routes to market leveraging IBM's extensive business development resources."
