I am undecided right now.
XP adds a lot of nice flavor (colors and sounds) to your computer, but it's actually the same thing as Win2KPro from what I can tell.
You need a bit more horsepower to run XP, as well, if you run all the new little graphics and colors.
But beyond that, it's just 2kPro
Do you like it as well as the Win2K Pro?
Muell <g>
Matt, which version of XP do you use?
"Windows has discovered new hardware"
At least it told you. Years ago, every time I booted, Windows detected a modem. That was good, since I had one. Unfortunately, it thought it was a new one. Even worse, it assumed that I wanted to install it.
You can imagine my displeasure when I discovered I had 18 fully functional modems, and one bad one. The bad one, of course, was the one I was supposed to be using. The fully functional ones? Well, of course they didn't exist.
Chris,
My wife's computer runs win98, it's a HP Pavilion 500MHz Celeron w/128M RAM. In the 12 months we've owned the machine it has crashed 4 times because of the software programs mainly win98 screws up! HP does make it easy to fix as they supply a CD with all the files on it and a sytem that will overright all system files and leave the others in tact. Only once have I had to format the hard drive and start completely over! If you have a system disk try reloading win98 before takeing everything else off.
Muell <g>
I hate Win98. Stupidest program around.
My biggest issues with it are stability and having to reboot for every friggen change you make.
Win2k and WinXP rock. I have never rebooted XP. And Win2k maybe once.
Not a problem. I'm running an AMD 1800+ with 512meg. and a 266 system bus. Yes we did have a thunderstorm and a lightning strike that got my modem (not the DSL) but everything else seemed to work fine. The strike was a month ago and the 98 thing just happened three days ago.
Chrisau
That's a strange one. Just a guess but it might be that your dsl modem or the connection to it is the problem area. Nah, I don't see how that could have anything to do with not booting. Did you happen to have a thunderstorm lately? Something could have been fried. The window98 shutdown problem is common. Have you tried a thorough scandisk ?
http://www.aumha.org/a/shutdown.htm
I wouldn't try upgrading to XP without at least a 700-800 processor and 256 ram. Although Microsoft list 300 and 128 as minimums required your xperiences won't be what you expected. I have it on two machines and love it's stability.
tc
My Win98 has become completely unstable! Three days ago I got the "Windows has discovered new hardware" card on screen and while I was looking at it, and trying to figure out what it had discovered, the screen filled with these cards. Would not re-boot, even to safe mode. Tried the start up disk, nothing.
After a lot of thinking and panic and trying other things I found the box the hard drive came in and the disk "Western digital Data Lifeguard Tools". It has a repair function on it that got the thing to recognize the startup disk. I had to reload Win98 and it still doesn't work correctly. Won't recognize my DSL on the first try and won't shut down properly. I get the "Windows is shutting down" screen and nothing further.
I'm thinking about getting XP and installing it over this. Got to be better than 98. Which version? Any thoughts? I will copy the drive to another first.
The only remedy is: SELL TEXN!! :)
Afraid I can't help. I have PSP too and it works fine as you described. I do not have Office 2000 so........... Anyone else?
Help needed with pulling up pictures.
NT4----Paint Shop Pro.
I can use psp.exe and browse either my picture folder or the A drive floppy to find and open pictures.
Before Office 2000 was loaded I could just insert a disk with pictures and double click on the picture and psp.exe would open it. (I had an earlier version of office before).
Now when I try to open this way I get a message that says "parameter is invalid " or something like that.
I went into VIEW and associated the JPEG files with psp.exe but it still doesn't work.
Any ideas?
Thanks, marvin
PS I also have Kodak PICDISK installed.
'Bout to put together a new computer. Got a Shuttle AK31 and AMD Athalon 1800XP. Going to use my existing CDRW, DVD and graphics card. Oh, 512 MB DDR.
Come on, this board needs some posts!

How Can You Tell If Something's Spyware-free?
The previous item--- "Spyware-Free Download Manager" --- might make you wonder: How can you tell, before the fact, if a given app contains spyware? Of course, there are ways to tell *after the fact.* For example, you can install the app and then run Ad-Aware ( http://www.lavasoft.de/ ) or Opt-Out ( http://grc.com/optout.htm ) to identify and root out any spyware after it's on your system. That's good, and better late than never. But wouldn't you prefer to know if something is spyware (or not) *before* you install it?
These sites can help--- they maintain lists of all known spyware. Using them, you can search BEFORE you download an install. Cool!

All AdSubtract products block ads and cookies, to make your online experience faster, more productive, and more private.
KillAd (for those pesky pop-ups). The pop-up ads on the internet are on the rise and very irritating. The first time you come into contact with the ad, it will open, then you may easily add the ad to the "kill" list. The next time you encounter the ad, the program will automatically close the pop-up window with sound feedback that you may customize. You may also edit the list just in case you desire to see the ad at some time in the future. The download is small (42K). You do need to make a new folder and a shortcut to the exe program for your desktop. After doing this, I moved the shortcut to the startup folder so that it would automatically load when I started up in the AM. link to PopUp Killer:

Every anti-virus program has its strengths and weaknesses. In this area lately we have been bombarded by several variants of the KAK virus that both Norton and McAfee ignore. InnoculateIt from http://antivirus.cai.com (it's free) does a great job of cleaning up and protecting. I have Windows Scripting Host turned off on my PC so they can't do anything once I get them, but I still thought I was clean until InnoculateIt found two different versions and cleaned them.
(Inoculate IT is no longer free for new users, but well worth the cost, IMO.)

I asked and thank 2 of our members,(JackVance and Spearfish)for putting together a
Maintenance schedule:
You should run, in the Windows environment, the programs ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter on a Regular Schedule. At least once a Month.
It is recommended that you run ScanDisk before you run the Disk Defragmenter.
Some people encounter problems with these programs, being able to run them all the way thru without them quitting is the problem. You will have a message box popup that says "unable to complete program due to another program writing to Disk".
The way around this, without changing any of your settings, is to run the above in "Windows Safe Mode". To get to the Safe Mode selection box, you do the following: Start up the Computer, Reboot, and while the Ram count is running, hold down the control key on the keyboard. This will usually popup the Safe Mode selection Box, enter the number for Safe Mode and press Enter. Then go to Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools and click the ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter.
In certain Cases you have to press the F8 key to enter the Safe Mode.

I was rather reluctant to try it, since I was so happy with Win2kPro...but....
It is growing on me very fast. I bought an extra memory stick to shove into the desktop I have running XP and wow, what a cool OS now. Nice, fast, and so far --- rock solid.
I'm really growing fond of the new Start Menu that organizes things.
That's why I started this one. This seems to be a really good format, like R/B used to be. I hope everyone that was on the old one will come to this one. It was a really good group!
