Occidental Petroleum to buy Carbon Engineering for $1.1 billion

(Reuters) -U.S. oil and gas producer Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) said on Tuesday it would acquire carbon-capture technology provider Carbon Engineering for a total cash consideration of approximately $1.1 billion.

The direct air capture (DAC) technology uses chemical reactions to remove carbon dioxide from the air, which can then be stored underground or used in products such as concrete or aviation fuel.

DAC is seen as an effective tool to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions when deployed at industrial scale.

Occidental has been working with Carbon Engineering on DAC deployment since 2019.

"The acquisition enables Occidental to catalyze broader development partnerships for DAC deployment in the most capital efficient and valuable way," said Occidental CEO Vicki Hollub.

The deal is expected to close before the end of 2023.

(Reuters) - Occidental Petroleum Corp (NYSE:OXY) on Wednesday reported an 83% slump in second-quarter profit, hit by lower oil and gas prices.

The company said average realized price for oil fell to $73.59 per barrel for the April-June quarter from last year's $107.72 per barrel.

Oil and gas prices soared last year in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine but energy prices have dropped sharply this year as fears of shortages eased amid global economic challenges.

Benchmark Brent crude prices averaged $80 a barrel in the second quarter of 2023, compared with $110 a year ago.

The lower oil prices were still lucrative for oil producers and Occidental's production in the quarter rose to 1.22 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) from 1.15 million boepd a year earlier.

Occidental, one of the largest oil and gas producers in the U.S., said net income attributable to common stockholders stood at $605 million, or $0.63 per share, for the three months ended June 30, compared with $3.55 billion, or $3.47 per share, a year ago.

Oil prices extended gains overnight with Brent at its highest since April and WTI testing $76, breaking out of its two month range.

Prices have climbed since OPEC+ heavyweights Saudi Arabia and Russia pledged even more output reductions in an effort to

rebalance the market. Strong Russian supply - despite sanctions due to the war in Ukraine - has been a headwind for the market.

Those flows are now showing signs of dropping, with average shipments falling below February averages.

Additionally, the global market is expected to tighten in the second half and stockpiles are forecast to draw through 2024, according to a report by the Energy Information Administration, which is due to release its weekly inventory figures later Wednesday.
