In the San Francisco Chronicle a few years ago, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a web of crab traps and lines. The fifty-foot whale was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her tail, her torso and a line tugging in her mouth.
A fisherman spotted her just east of a local island chain and called an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her - a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around - she thanked them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

Sleep: Are you getting enough?
Here are some ways to determine your own optimum amount of sleep and tips on how you can get it
By Laura Bickle
For many of us it's a familiar scene: You hit the snooze button for the umpteenth time, and think to yourself, "I just need one more hour." Well, you're probably right. Many of us don't get the sleep we need and it can have a dramatic effect on how we think and feel. In fact, sleep deprivation can cause moodiness, lack of motivation, difficulty making decisions and general malaise. And sleep deprivation doesn't just occur when you pull an all-nighter - if you don't get the sleep your body requires on a consistent basis, you're not going to feel your best, it's that simple.
How Much Is Enough?
So how much sleep do you need? According to sleep experts you're getting the right amount when you are able to get up easily, stay alert throughout the day and then go to sleep easily at night. But the amount of sleep required to accomplish that varies from person to person, says psychologist Dr. Joseph De Koninck, president of the Canadian Sleep Society. "It's a bit like your height or the size of your nose, it's something that is most likely genetically determined." Everyone is different - some people feel rested after six hours while others may need 10 to feel good.
One way to find out how much sleep you need is to simply wake up at the same time every morning and go to bed when you're tired. By following your body's signals, instead of your own schedule, you'll have a good idea of how much sleep you really need. De Koninck also says that if you need an alarm clock to wake you, you probably aren't getting your ideal amount of sleep. "You're interrupting your natural sleep needs. So if you require an alarm clock you should go to bed earlier." Once you adjust the time you go to bed to suit your sleep requirements you may not need an alarm clock to wake you on weekdays.
Make It Count
But even when you've determined that say, eight hours is your magic number, those eight hours need to be quality, restful sleep. And that means having a sleep routine that works for you. The catchphrase the experts use is "sleep hygiene," which is basically a set of behaviours that gets your mind and body ready for slumber.
One of the most common causes of difficulty in getting to sleep, says De Koninck, is worry. "If you start worrying in bed," he says, "get out of bed. You shouldn't associate bedtime with trying to solve problems." Most experts agree that the bedroom should only be used for sleeping and sex. For example, if your bedroom is also your office, it may be all the more difficult to get your mind for sleep if you know that urgent report is sitting unfinished on your computer, only a few feet away.
However, says De Koninck, some people have successful routines that contradict the "sleep and sex only" edict - just like the amount of sleep you need, the routine itself varies depending on the individual. For example, some people find that reading or watching TV in bed takes their minds away from their worries and lulls them to sleep, while for others these activities have the opposite effect.
No matter your routine once you get into bed, it's important to find activities that relax you before you climb between the sheets - maybe it's doing some soothing yoga, taking a warm bath, writing in a journal or having a warm drink.
Here are some more tips for getting the sleep you need:
Don't drink caffeinated or alcoholic beverages within four to six hours of going to bed.
A light snack may help you sleep, but avoid eating a large meal.
Regular exercise helps promote sleep, but don't workout within six hours of bedtime. The energizing effects of a good workout will make if difficult to get to sleep.
Make your bedroom as quiet and dark as possible - consider buying earplugs and blackout shades. And make sure the temperature is comfortable.
Go to bed only when you're sleepy. Otherwise you'll lie in bed waiting for sleep to come and that can cause anxiety itself.
If you can't fall asleep, get up and do something quiet, such as reading a book, outside the bedroom. Go back to bed only when you feel drowsy.
Have a regular wake-up time - even on your days off.
If you must nap, sleep for less than one hour and before 3 p.m.
If worrying has been keeping you up, set aside some time earlier in the evening to think about your problems and come up with solutions. It may also help to make a to-do list so that you're not making one up in your mind while lying in bed.
Turn your clock away from your line of vision - watching the clock can elevate your stress about getting to sleep.
If you consistently have trouble sleeping, or if you feel sleepy during the day even with a reasonable amount of sleep, speak to you doctor.

TORONTO - Saskatoon is the most dangerous city in Canada and Caledon, Ont., is the safest, according to the latest survey by Maclean's magazine.
This is the second year the magazine has put out the lists and the second year in a row Caledon, northwest of Toronto, has topped the safest areas list.
Saskatoon is followed on the most dangerous list by Winnipeg, Regina, Prince George, B.C., and Edmonton.
Caledon is followed by Oromocto, N.B., Levis, Que., Maskoutains MRC, Que., which includes Saint-Hyacinthe, and Halton Region west of Toronto.
As for Canada's two largest cities, Toronto ranked 29th out of 100 cities, compared to 26th last year, and Montreal ranked 24th compared to 19th on the high crime list.
Maclean's says it based its rankings on 2007 per-capita crime rates, the most recent available from the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics.

Swedish woman finds 1.13-bln-dollar windfall
Tue Feb 24, 4:18 PM
STOCKHOLM (AFP) - A Swedish woman received the shock of a lifetime when she found 1.13 billion dollars (883 million euros) more than expected in her bank account, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
Cornelia Johansson discovered the windfall on Monday, after she logged on to her Internet bank to pay some bills, regional daily Goeteborgs-Posten said in its online edition.
"The balance was more than 10 billion kronor. It said the amount had been deposited as a correction for a credit card purchase," Johansson's boyfriend Daniel Hoeglund told the daily.
On Tuesday morning, the money was still credited to her account, but a few hours later it was gone, as mysteriously as it had arrived.
A press spokeswoman for Nordea bank, the largest bank in the Nordic region, later explained the mystery as "a technical mistake made by a company."

6,473 Texts a Month, But at What Cost?
Constant Cellphone Messaging Keeps Kids Connected, Parents Concerned
By Donna St. George
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, February 22, 2009; Page A01
Julie Zingeser texts at home, at school, in the car while her mother is driving. She texts during homework, after pompon practice and as she walks the family dog. She takes her cellphone with her to bed.
Every so often, the hum of a new message rouses the Rockville teen from sleep. "I would die without it," Julie, 15, says of her text life.
This does not surprise her mother, Pam, who on one recent afternoon scans the phone bill for the eye-popping number that puts an exclamation point on how growing up has changed in the digital age. In one busy month, Pam finds, her youngest daughter sent and received 6,473 text messages.
For Pam Zingeser, the big issue is not cost -- it's $30 a month for the family's unlimited texting plan -- but the effects of so much messaging. Pam wonders: What will this generation learn and what will they lose in the relentless stream of sentence fragments, abbreviations and emoticons? "Life's issues are not always settled in sound bites," Pam says.
Parents, educators and researchers are grappling with similar concerns as text messaging has exploded across the formative years of the nation's youngest generation. Teens now do more texting on their cellphones than calling. And although it's too early for conclusive data on the effects of prolific texting -- on attention span, social life, writing ability, family connections -- questions abound, even as many experts point to clear benefits.
"It's a huge cultural phenomenon with huge down-the-road consequences," contends David E. Meyer, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan.
Nationally, more than 75 billion text messages are sent a month, and the most avid texters are 13 to 17, say researchers. Teens with cellphones average 2,272 text messages a month, compared with 203 calls, according to the Nielsen Co.
The tap, tap, tap of connectivity can benefit teenagers at a time in life when they cannot always get together in an unscheduled way. Texters are "sharing a sense of co-presence," said Mimi Ito of the University of California at Irvine. "It can be a very socially affirming thing."
For families, the text world can bring convenience as never before in arranging rides, doing errands, letting parents know of changing plans.
But some experts say there are downsides, starting with declines in spelling, word choice and writing complexity. Some suggest too much texting is related to an inability to focus.
There also are concerns about texting while driving, text-bullying and "sexting," or the term for adolescents messaging naked photos of themselves or others. What might have been intended for a friend can be widely distributed, and the texting of lewd photographs of minors can lead to criminal charges.
The American Journal of Psychiatry published an editorial last year by psychiatrist Jerald J. Block, suggesting that addiction to the Internet and text messaging be included in the diagnostic manual for mental illnesses.

Police make Parliament Hill arrest before Obama arrival
Thu Feb 19, 11:02 AM
By The Canadian Press
OTTAWA - RCMP made an arrest on Parliament Hill shortly before the arrival of U.S. President Barack Obama for a six-hour visit.
Few details were immediately available, but a police spokesman said the arrest was made after a young man jumped a barrier. A group of burly RCMP officers wrestled the man to the ground at Wellington Street, just in front of the Parliament Hill lawn, and led him away for questioning.
Crowds were relatively sparse on the front lawn of Parliament Hill as Air Force One touched down at the airport, about 20 minutes' drive away.
The city was crawling with police and other security personnel.
The Parliament buildings were surrounded by fencing and crowds were being kept in check by double steel barriers.

Police in Conn. shoot chimp after it attacks woman
Mon Feb 16, 9:04 PM
By Stephanie Reitz, The Associated Press
HARTFORD, Conn. - A 200-pound chimpanzee kept as a pet and once used in commercials was shot and killed by police Monday after it mauled a woman visiting its owner and later cornered an officer in his cruiser, authorities said.
Stamford police Lt. Richard Conklin said the injured woman was hospitalized late Monday in "very serious" condition at Stamford Hospital; her identity was not immediately released. Conklin said she suffered "a tremendous loss of blood" from serious facial injuries.
The 15-year-old chimpanzee's owner and two officers also were hurt, though police said the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
Police said they had no idea why the chimpanzee, named Travis, attacked the woman as she got out of her car to visit the animal's owner, Sandra Herold. Conklin said Herold wrestled with the animal, then ran inside to call 911.
"She retrieved a large butcher knife and stabbed her longtime pet numerous times in an effort to save her friend, who was really being brutally attacked," Conklin said.
Travis ran away and started roaming on Herold's property as police arrived. Officers set up security so medics could reach the critically injured woman lying on the ground, Conklin said.
As the woman was treated, the chimpanzee went after several of the officers, who retreated into their cars, Conklin said. Travis opened the door to one cruiser and started to get in, trapping an officer who then shot the chimpanzee several times, Conklin said.
The wounded chimpanzee fled. Conklin said police followed the trail of his blood down the driveway, into the open door of the home, through the house and to his living quarters, where he had retreated and died of his wounds.
Well-known around Stamford because he rode around in trucks belonging to his owners' towing company, Travis appeared on TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola when he was younger, made an appearance on the "Maury Povich Show" and took part in a television pilot, according to a 2003 story in The Advocate newspaper of Stamford.
"He's been raised almost like a child by this family," Conklin said Monday. "He rides in a car every day, he opens doors, he's a very unique animal in that aspect. We have no indication of what provoked this behaviour at all."
A message seeking comment was left Monday night at Herold's home.
Conklin said the chimp has been ill from Lyme disease, "so maybe from the medications he was out of sorts. We really don't know."
Police have dealt with the animal in the past, including an incident in 2003 when he escaped from his owners' vehicle in downtown Stamford for two hours. Officers used cookies, macadamia treats and ice cream in an attempt to lure him, but subdued him only after he became too tired to resist.
At the time of the 2003 incident, police said the Herolds told them the chimpanzee was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table and drank wine from a stemmed glass. He also brushed his teeth using a Water Pik, logged onto the computer to look at pictures, and watched television using the remote control, police said.

Islamic TV founder charged with beheading wife: reports
52 minutes ago
NEW YORK (AFP) - The founder of a US television station aimed at countering stereotypes of Muslims has been arrested and charged with beheading his wife, local media reported.
Muzzammil Hassan was charged with second-degree murder of his wife, Aasiya Hassan, whose decapitated body was found Thursday by police at the Bridges TV station in a Buffalo suburb in New York state, The Buffalo News reported Monday.
"He came to the police station at 6:20 pm (Thursday) and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz told the newspaper.
Police reportedly went to Bridges TV, which Hassan founded in 2004, and discovered her body.
Orchard Park police told AFP there was a statement about the murder and arrest but would not release it or confirm any details pending contact with the police chief, who was unavailable.
Bridges TV said in a statement it was "deeply shocked and saddened by the murder of Aasiya (Zubair) Hassan and subsequent arrest of Muzzammil Hassan."
CNN reported on its website that Benz said Hassan, 44, confessed to beheading his wife.
Benz said Hassan's wife, 37, had filed for divorce January 6, and that police had responded to numerous domestic violence calls at the couple's home, according to CNN.
He reportedly had two children, age four and six, with his wife, and two other children, age 17 and 18, from a previous marriage.

By The Associated Press
PARIS - Salma Hayek picked a romance-lover's ideal time and place for her wedding: Valentine's Day in Paris.
The Mexican-born actress wed French magnate Francois-Henri Pinault in a civil ceremony Saturday at the City Hall in Paris' chic 6th arrondissement, according to an official there.
The wedding was a small affair, said the official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, in accordance with policy.
The nuptials followed a rocky romance. The two met in Italy in 2006, announced their engagement and had a baby, Valentina Paloma, in September 2007. Last year they broke off their engagement but made up a few months later.
Hayek, 42, was nominated for an Oscar in 2003 for the film "Frida," the biography of the painter Frida Kahlo, which she produced and starred in. She is one of the executive producers of the hit series "Ugly Betty" and is also the chief executive of Ventanazul, a production company she formed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.
Pinault, 46, is chief executive of the French luxury and retail group PPR SA, which owns high-end labels such as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and Puma.

Husband ends marriage on Facebook, court hears
2 hours, 7 minutes ago
LONDON (AFP) - A 39-year-old husband ended his six-year marriage by announcing it on social networking website Facebook, a court heard Friday.
Emma Brady, 35, only found out about her husband Neil's intentions when he changed his Facebook status to read, "Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady," and a friend in Denmark called her to ask how she was coping.
The mother-of-one, who works as a conference organiser, was "shell-shocked" by her husband's decision despite the fact that their marriage had had its "ups and downs", magistrates in Blackburn heard.
Neil Brady's lawyer Gareth Price told the court, however, that Emma Brady had not first learnt of the divorce over Facebook, saying their marriage had already become strained.
The details of Neil Brady's decisions were told to the court during sentencing for assaulting his wife at their home in nearby Accrington.
At Christmas last year, the pair had gone on separate nights out and upon returning, an argument broke out, with Neil Brady, an IT consultant, demanding to see his wife's mobile phone.
When she refused, he grabbed her hand, injuring her wrist, and then threw her out of the house.
Neil Brady, who is currently living with his mother, pleaded guilty to the charge and was handed a fine of 580 pounds along with 175 pounds in compensation and legal costs.

A man said to the universe: "Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the universe, "The fact has not created in me a sense of obligation."
