$ NOC. Northrop Grumman and UAE's Higher Colleges of Technology Extend STEM Partnership.
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) today, renewing their joint commitment to advancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the UAE.
The MOU, signed at the International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) in Abu Dhabi, marks the official launch of the 2015 Innovation Challenge competition.
The Innovation Challenge pairs Northrop Grumman mentors with HCT students to tackle a real-world engineering project: designing, building and then flying autonomous unmanned aircraft. The programme ends in a week-long competition where the student teams compete against each other in oral presentations and flight demonstrations.
"The Innovation Challenge continues to successfully enable our students, both male and female, to utilize the STEM-based knowledge gained through their courses in a very hands-on manner," said Dr Tayeb Kamali, vice chancellor of HCT.
"This competition is a wonderful example of HCT's commitment to the 'Learning by Doing' philosophy, where our students apply what they are taught in an interactive, practical setting. We thank Northrop Grumman for once again committing great support to enriching our students with experience in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles," Kamali added.
"The UAE is investing heavily in the development of new industries in order to support economic diversification, and Northrop Grumman is committed to supporting that goal," said Doug Raaberg, chief executive of Northrop Grumman UAE. "Innovation Challenge is a unique program that equips youth for new careers paths, supports the advancement of women's participation in the labor force, and enhances the UAE's global competitiveness."
Innovation Challenge 2015 is the largest to date, with 15 teams representing five Emirates. Competition week – which is open to the public – will take place from April 19-23, 2015. There students will compete against each other for a chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the United States, where they will tour Northrop Grumman facilities and educational institutions specializing in STEM.

REDONDO BEACH, Calif., Feb. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) continues its record of success in space cryocoolers with the latest units to become operational on-orbit.
Photos accompanying this release are available at: http://media.globenewswire.com/noc/mediagallery.html?pkgid=30678.
Northrop Grumman's cryocoolers enable the operation of the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), built by Exelis, Inc., by creating the extremely cold temperature required for its operation. The Imager, on board the Japan Meteorological Agency weather satellite manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Himawari-8, is improving weather forecasts and early warnings for severe weather in Eastern Asia and Western Pacific.
The Himawari-8 cryocoolers join the multiple Northrop Grumman cryocoolers successfully operating in space, most recently the High Efficiency Cryocooler on board NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 satellite, launched July 2.
For the Advanced Himawari Imager, Northrop Grumman's HEC cryocooler has been configured with a second cold head to provide simultaneous cooling at two temperatures. The system maintains its high reliability, inherent in the design with no moving parts in the cold end and a non-wearing compressor. The design used for Himawari-8 has also been delivered to support Exelis' Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
"It is gratifying to know our technology plays such a key role in climate research and weather monitoring for U.S. and international customers," said Chris Yamada, vice president, Aerospace Products, Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems.

$ NOC. Northrop Grumman Highlights Advances in C4ISR, Shows the Future of Integrated Avionics Equipment.
WASHINGTON, Oct. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) highlighted advances in C4ISR and showcased the future of integrated avionics equipment during an Oct. 28 briefing at the National Press Club.
Northrop Grumman Corporation logo.
A photo accompanying this release is available at: media.globenewswire.com/noc/mediagallery.html?pkgid=28730.
Jeffrey Q. Palombo, vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman's Land and Self Protection Systems Division, discussed how open architecture designs in integrated avionics equipment can offer a path to more configurable and capable aircraft.
"What will change over the next 40 years?" Palombo asked. "The world has gone digital and because of that, the services need to be able to make changes; they need more autonomy. An aircraft may be updated once or twice over its lifespan, but the avionics may need to be upgraded 10 times in that same time frame."
To keep pace with evolving threats, aircraft need sensors, surveillance equipment and situational awareness capabilities that can continue to morph, regardless of the platform. Palombo said this is the key to the future of integrated avionics equipment. This approach can lead to significant savings in cost, logistics and training. Open architecture is an important component of implementing those rapid enhancements.
"The robustness of aircraft today permits them to stay around for a long time," Palombo said. "Not only is there tremendous added value when you can deliver platform-agnostic avionics across multiple platforms, but when you incorporate open architecture into the design, you can insert those capabilities much quicker than in the past."
Pointing to platform-agnostic, capability-based integrated avionics systems, such as the one recently procured by the U.S. Army for the UH-60V Black Hawk digital cockpit, Palombo showed how the UH-60V architecture brings more competition and innovation to the industry.
Northrop Grumman's digitized cockpit for the UH-60V features an integrated architecture with a partitioned, modular operational flight program that enables new capabilities through software-only solutions rather than hardware additions. The architecture maximizes and extends the platform performance and reliability while minimizing total life cycle cost. The system is also smaller in size, lower in weight and requires less power than legacy processing systems.
This next-generation avionics system is aligned with the Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE™) standard and supports integration of off-the-shelf software and hardware, enabling rapid insertion of capabilities while reducing cost and risk for system integration and upgrades. Northrop Grumman is providing full, unlimited government purpose rights to technical data and software, providing the customer with unprecedented flexibility while eliminating vendor lock and mitigating obsolescence issues.
"Flexibility is important," Palombo said. "Autonomy for our customer is very important. Think about how rapidly things can be accomplished using an open architecture approach and how quickly new capabilities and threats can be addressed. That is our future."

$ NOC. Northrop Grumman Sets World Record with One-Terahertz Circuit, Achieves One Trillion Cycles per Second.
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif., Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), a leader in advanced microelectronics, has developed the world's fastest integrated circuit amplifier, which has been recognized by Guinness World Records. The amplifier uses 10 transistor stages to reach an operating speed of one terahertz (1012 Hz), or one trillion cycles per second—surpassing the company's own performance record of 850 billion cycles per second set in 2012.

Terahertz is a slice of the electromagnetic spectrum that lies between microwaves and infrared light waves. Researchers have long sought to exploit this tremendously high-frequency band, commonly referred to as the "terahertz gap," but have been unable to detect, process and radiate the necessary high-frequency signals without resorting to frequency translation or multiplication.
The Northrop Grumman terahertz monolithic integrated circuit (TMIC) effectively bridges this gap by using a super-scaled 25 nanometer gatelength indium phosphide high electron mobility transistor that measures at a gain of 10 decibels at 1 terahertz and nine decibels at 1.03 terahertz. In comparison, present day smartphones operate at 1 to 2 gigahertz and wireless networks at 5.7 gigahertz.
Developed on behalf of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the circuit is the culmination of the company's three-phase contract with the agency to demonstrate transistor-based electronics operating at 670 gigahertz, 850 gigahertz and 1 terahertz. All three milestones were successfully completed by Northrop Grumman within five years.
"This breakthrough by the Northrop Grumman team could lead to revolutionary technologies such as high-resolution security imaging systems, improved collision-avoidance radar, communications networks with many times the capacity of current systems and spectrometers that could detect potentially dangerous chemicals and explosives with much greater sensitivity," said Dev Palmer, program manager, Microsystems Technology Office at DARPA.
Additional applications could include atmospheric sensing, radio astronomy and medical imaging. It is also expected to improve system range, and reduce size, weight and power consumption of existing systems.
"A decade ago, there was no consensus in the scientific community whether an integrated circuit operating at one terahertz was technologically possible," said William Deal, program manager, terahertz electronics, Northrop Grumman. "An interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers worked together in scaling all facets of our MMIC technology to enable this result. Now, as a result of DARPA's investment in high-speed transistor processes, it will become routine to fabricate wafers containing thousands of terahertz integrated circuits."
DARPA has made strategic investments in terahertz electronics through its High Frequency Integrated Vacuum Electronics (HiFIVE), Sub-millimeter Wave Imaging Focal Plane Technology (SWIFT) and Technology for Frequency Agile Digitally Synthesized Transmitters (TFAST) programs. Each program built on the successes of the previous one, providing the foundational research necessary for frequencies to reach the terahertz threshold. Northrop Grumman has partnered with DARPA on each program.

MQ-8C Fire Scout has been undergoing rigorous flight testing and validation, which will culminate in the actual takeoff and landing on the deck of a Navy vessel at-sea. The MQ-8C is the company's latest variant of its successful Fire Scout unmanned aerial system, which performs intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions for the U.S. Navy.
"The sloped takeoff and landing tests are designed to be as real as it gets to actually operating on a Navy ship," said Capt. Patrick Smith, Fire Scout program manager at Naval Air Systems Command. "The autonomous MQ-8C Fire Scout system is able to precisely track and understand the roll and pitch of the surface which resembles at-sea conditions."
The sloped landing platform was previously used to test and certify the MQ-8B Fire Scout for ship-based operations and is now being used for the more capable MQ-8C. The MQ-8C is utilizing the same proven autonomous system for takeoff and landings as the current MQ-8B model.
"The MQ-8C Fire Scout system is performing as predicted and as previously demonstrated during Fire-X testing back in 2011," said George Vardoulakis, vice president for Medium Range Tactical Systems, Northrop Grumman. "These tests enable a validation of our autonomous system and clear the way for dynamic interface testing onboard the ship."
Since its first flight Oct. 31, 2013, the MQ-8C Fire Scout has flown 219 flights and 287 hours. The most recent tests on the MQ-8C have consisted of electromagnetic testing, which assured compatibility with ship-based emitters (like radar) and an initial phase of dynamic interface testing, which looked at deck handling and communications networks. The MQ-8C's first ship-based series of flights are planned for later this year.
