SANTIAGO (Dow Jones)--Chile's copper exports totaled $2.54 billion in July, considerably lower than the $4.03 billion exported in the same month last year, the central bank reported Monday.



LONDON (Dow Jones)--A serious accident at Russia's largest hydropower station earlier Monday will take years to repair and has the potential to seriously disrupt electricity supplies to the Siberian region, threatening output at one of the country's largest industrial power consumers as a result.

LONDON (Dow Jones)--The Congolese government has detained three employees of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX) in association with alleged misappropriation of public funds, although it hasn't provided any evidence yet of wrongdoing, the U.S. company said Monday.

Zambia's largest cobalt smelter, Chambishi Metals PLC, has failed to secure concentrate supplies from Zambia and Congo's Katanga province which has delayed its plans to resume output, a government official told Dow Jones Newswires Monday.

MELBOURNE (Dow Jones)-- Newcrest Mining Ltd. (NCM.AU) said Monday its full year net profit rose 84.7% to A$248.1 million from A$134.3 million last year as a soaring gold price offset weaker copper prices.

BEIJING (Dow Jones)--China's Dongling Group has shut down a lead and zinc smelter in Shaanxi province after more than 600 children living nearby were found to have dangerously high blood lead levels, the Xinhua News Agency reported over the weekend.

Copper futures corrected lower Monday as global equities fell but the dollar strengthened.

LONDON (Dow Jones)--Base metals on the London Metal Exchange fell sharply Monday because of rising risk aversion, a decline in equity markets, and a stronger U.S. dollar.

SHANGHAI (Dow Jones)--Base metals on the Shanghai Futures Exchange tumbled Monday, tracking their London Metal Exchange counterparts on a firming dollar and faltering equities following a mixed bag of U.S. economic data.

NXG Generates Cash Flow from Operations of $45.2 Million in the First Quarter

Gold Production of 107,477 ounces at a Cash Cost of $396/ounce

First Quarter 2009 Highlights

- Total gold production was 107,477 ounces, exceeding the first quarter
production forecast:

- Kemess produced 59,306 ounces during the first quarter, which
was 10,000 ounces above forecast.

- Fosterville continued its strong turnaround producing 25,779
ounces during the first quarter, which was 2,000 ounces above
forecast.

- Average net cash cost of production was $396 per ounce, which was
significantly lower than first quarter guidance.

- Gold sales for the first quarter totalled 111,850 ounces at a
realized price of $935 per ounce.

- Substantial progress was made on the pre-feasibility study work at
Young-Davidson, where the mine plan is being redesigned around the
new larger 3.3 million ounce measured and indicated gold resource,
using low cost bulk mining methods to reduce operating costs and
increase annual production.

- Successful exploration drilling at Stawell:

- Discovered two additional zones of gold mineralization on
either side of the GG5 mining zone.

- Hole SD-622W6 in the North Magdala target area intersected 5.7
metres of 19.6 g/t gold.

- Began commissioning the heated leach circuit at the Fosterville mine,
which will significantly improve gold recoveries.

Ken Stowe, President and CEO, stated: "Strong financial results
were achieved from our operations
during the first quarter, as we beat the forecast for both
gold and copper production, generating excellent cash flow
from operations of $45 million.

Kemess performed extremely well during the quarter, exceeding
our expectations for production and costs.

We were equally as pleased with the strong operating results
from both Fosterville and Stawell,
where we achieved another solid quarter of production
and lower cash costs.

On the exploration front, drill results over the past six months
in the North Magdala target at Stawell and in the Harrier zone at Fosterville
have been sufficiently compelling that we are commencing
development towards both of these areas while
exploration continues.

Pre-feasibility work at Young-Davidson is moving along well,
with completion expected by the end of June."

FIFTY-DEGREE temperature swings are tough on the mind and body. But Ken Stowe, president and chief executive of Canada's Northgate Minerals, was more than happy to take the endurance test on a tour of the group's Victorian operations.

Swapping Canada's frigid weather for Victoria's swelter, Mr Stowe called in on the group's goldmines in Stawell and Fosterville, near Bendigo.

He had good reason to be pleased despite the heat and flies, with both mines in a head-to-battle for the glory of being Victoria's biggest mine (currently held by Stawell on 2008 figures). Production is rising, costs are coming down and exploration success is adding to mine life. All that at a time of record Australian-dollar gold prices.

Ownership makes Northgate Victoria's biggest gold producer by a long shot — a combined 219,000 ounces is forecast for 2009, worth about $328 million at current prices.

But being the mines' owner has not been a guarantee of success in the past. It was the financial and operational woes of the previous owner, Perseverance Corp, that gave Northgate the chance to establish a base in the local gold industry, a base that it intends to use as a launch pad for future growth.

Perseverance was essentially in the hands of its banks when Northgate launched a "rescue" bid in October 2007. The 20¢-a-share bid valued Perseverance at $282 million and was wrapped up without a hint of opposition in February 2008. While others had put Perseverance in the "too hard" basket, it was just the type of situation that Northgate has specialised in for the last 10 years.

"Our history is one of identifying undervalued, underperforming or undercapitalised assets — diamonds in the rough," Mr Stowe said.

"The Perseverance assets fit exactly this model. In the four months between the announcement of the acquisition in October 2007 to the closing in mid-Feb 2008, we worked closely with the management at Stawell and Fosterville to identify the key challenges and formulate a focused action plan once we were in charge," he told BusinessDay from Canada.

"We told everyone that the turnaround would not be instantaneous but would take one to two years.

"Our culture is not one of sending down teams of external consultants to fix the problems. We pride ourselves on being able to make quick decisions based on a wealth of operating experience."

Each mine came with its own challenges. Stawell has been operating for 26 years (originally a WMC mine) and has been in closure mode for a number of years, with minimal exploration or capital investment.

"We have made a significant investment in ventilation and cooling underground to improve working conditions, a new, larger truck fleet to dramatically improve productivity, and $7 million a year in exploration dollars among other things," Mr Stowe said.

"Since we have taken over, our aggressive exploration program has already added about two years to the mine life."

Fosterville had been a relatively new operation in the process of transferring from open-pit to underground. When Northgate arrived, the underground mine was still in its ramp-up phase. Development was falling behind the needs of the surface processing plant and gold recoveries were well below design due to black shales in the ore "robbing" gold in solution.

Three days after taking control, Northgate negotiated a deal to switch from contactor to owner mining over a three-month period and set about accelerating underground development work. At the same time, work on a a pilot plant to identify a practical fix for the low gold recoveries was started.

"We are now constructing a $6 million addition to the plant that should be operational at the end of March and is expected to improve gold recovery to about 90 per cent (82 per cent in the December quarter)," Mr Stowe said.

As it has got on top of Fosterville's issues, Northgate is putting more effort in to exploration. "Our initial exploration efforts at Fosterville have met with considerable success, with the discovery of the high-grade Harrier underground zone," Mr Stowe said.

"We see the two Victorian mines as a solid base from which to grow. By our nature we are not grassroots explorers but rather acquirers of operating or advanced development assets," was the only clue Mr Stowe would give on future Australian plans.

I have spent a lot of time reading the posts on this forum,,finally an informed bunch,,,,I missed NGX on the last down turn (bummer, as it was a real steel then) but I am looking for some guidance here,,,,,If gold stays above 900/0z, and copper above 1.50/lb for the 2009 operating period where do you guys believe NGX will be in 12 months ????

I am looking to take advantage of the new tax free accounts and I think / believe NGX may be the ticket ?? thoughts are welcome
