$NEE NextEra Energy's (NEE +0.9%) Florida Power & Light unit says it will apply federal tax savings toward the expected $1.3B cost of Hurricane Irma restoration and will not need to raise rates this year to pay for the work.

FPL previously said it would attempt to recoup Irma-related restoration costs through a surcharge on customer bills through 2020.

FPL says it may be able to use future federal tax savings to continue operating under the current base rate agreement beyond the initial term for up to two additional years through the end of 2022.

Texas utility regulators again deny approval for NextEra Energy’s (NEE -1.2%) proposed $18B deal to buy Oncor, the state’s largest transmission operator.

NEE had filed an application with the Texas Public Utility Commission for a rehearing on the acquisition after it was first rejected by the authorities in March this year.

"While NextEra Energy is a well-regarded utility holding company, the expansive and diversified structure of NextEra Energy and its affiliates would subject Oncor to new and potentially substantial risks," according to the order.

NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) asks Texas energy regulators to reconsider their decision to reject its takeover of Oncor, citing what it says was an error-riddled series of findings that killed the deal.

NEE today filed arguments in support of a rehearing, saying it was deprived of due process by regulators that overstepped their authority; the motion for rehearing could be a first step toward other legal action, the documents say, as a motion for rehearing helps preserve NEE’s right to seek judicial review.

Texas energy regulators formally rejected the $18.7B deal last month.

WSJ: NextEra Energy in talks to salvage rejected deal to acquire Oncor

NextEra Energy (NEE +0.1%) is in talks aimed at saving its acquisition of the Oncor electricity transmissions businesses after Texas regulators rejected the deal last week, WSJ reports.

Lawyers for both NEE and Energy Future Holdings reportedly said at a bankruptcy court hearing today that the companies were surprised and disappointed by the ruling from the Texas PUC but remain committed to finding a way to close the deal “if at all possible.”

A lawyer for Energy Future said at the hearing that NEE is attempting to negotiate a settlement with critics that had urged Texas regulators to kill the deal.

Bankrupt Energy Future, which owns most of Oncor, considers the vital regulated piece of the Texas power grid as its crown jewel, and the sale to NEE was supposed to bring in cash to pay off billions of dollars in debt.

Energy Future Holdings has canceled plans to auction its power distribution business and will try to resolve its $42B bankruptcy under one of two proposals backed by rival groups of creditors.

NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) was said to have emerged as the front-runner in the now-canceled auction after making a cash offer worth ~$18B.

Unsecured creditors backed by Hunt Consolidated are trying to round up enough senior debtholders to push through a ~$19B reorganization plan and have offered to buy power-line company Oncor and settle many of the bankruptcy’s most contentious disputes.

NextEra 2Q Profit Rose 39% As New Wind Contracts Boost Revenue

NextEra Energy Inc. (NEE) second-quarter earnings rose 39% as new wind generation contracts drove revenue growth and improved margins.

The largest renewable energy provider in the U.S., formerly known as FPL Group Inc., has seen improved results of late, due in part to recovering power demand and expiring federal renewable-energy subsidies driving utilities to move forward with deals. But adverse economic conditions in Florida remain a concern. The company's Florida utility has agreed to freeze base rates through the end of 2012.

NextEra reported a profit of $580 million, or $1.38 a share, up from $417 million, or $1.01 a share, a year earlier. Excluding items such as the mark-to-market effects of nonqualifying hedges and other than temporary impairments on certain investments, earnings rose to $1.18 a share from $1.11.

Revenue jumped 10% to $3.96 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had most recently forecast earnings of $1.09 on revenue of $3.74 billion.

Operating margin rose to 22.9% from 19.7%.

At the Florida Power & Light utility business -- which makes up the bulk of the company's revenue -- earnings increased 14%. The customer count increased by 28,500 to 4.55 million at the end of the period.

Its namesake, unregulated generating business saw earnings jump 55% to $239 million, while revenue rose 15%. Since late April, the company said it has signed contracts for 632 megawatts of new wind generation.

NextEra also backed its full-year earnings estimate.

Shares closed Tuesday at $57.36 and were inactive premarket. The stock has risen 6.6% over the past year.

Jefferies upgraded its price target on NextEra Energy (NYSE: NEE) from $61.50 to $62.50 in a research report published today, after NextEra announced Q1 earnings in line with analysts' estimates.

NextEra raised its earnings per share estimate for this year, but Jefferies failed to do the same, however. Instead, Jefferies fine-tuned its 2012 and 2013 EPS estimates upward by $0.05 to $4.70 and $5.00, respectively.

Jefferies currently has a Buy rating on NextEra's shares.
