'Designer Vaginas' Blacklisted in Australia
Thursday, July 31, 2008
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,395243,00.html
Cosmetic surgery to "rejuvenate" the vagina has been blacklisted by Australian gynecologists who say more women are being injured by the dangerous procedures.
Top female sexual health specialists say they are seeing an increase in women with scarring, infections and altered sexual sensations after undergoing vaginal surgery.
Most have had labioplasty operations, to change the external appearance of the vagina or, less commonly, to narrow the vagina or "amplify'' the female G-spot.
The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has issued a position statement on the trend, labelling it dangerous, expensive and unwarranted.
"The college is particularly concerned that such surgery may exploit vulnerable women,'' the statement said.
Dr. Ted Weaver, chairman of the college's women's health committee, said there were now a number of clinics, mostly in Sydney and the Gold Coast, offering these treatments.
Most of the operations cost at least $10,000, an "extraordinary amount of money,'' Weaver said.
"We feel these operations might prey on people with insecurities and fears who actually need psychological help,'' he said.
"They are also not very anatomically-based and have the potential to cause serious harm.''
Many college members had treated patients with scarring, permanent disfigurement, infection and altered sexual sensations, some of whom required reconstructive surgery, he said.
There was concern that women seeking the most common operation, the labioplasty, did not understand there was a huge variation in how women's external genitalia look.
"In one case we heard of a man bringing in a Brazilian pornographic photo and saying: `Make my girlfriend look like this','' Weaver said.
"We don't think it is ethical behavior to agree to do that.''
G-spot augmentation, where collagen is injected into the vaginal wall to enhance sexual pleasure, was also controversial.
"It is often not clear where the G-spot is or if it even exists at all in some women,'' he said.
"So the procedure is done without that being verified, often causing problems in sex.''
Daniel Fleming, president of the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery, said the vast majority of people who undergo labia and vaginal surgery were "very happy'' with the result.
"If there's a problem (the gynecologists) need to submit the evidence so we can find out why it's happening and if any particular group of doctors is implicated in the alleged increased complication rate,'' Fleming said.
Preacher Arrested in Church After Wife's Body Found in Freezer
Wednesday, July 30, 2008
Mobile Police Department
Anthony Hopkins, a small-time preacher, was arrested Monday in the middle of a revival after his wife's body was found in a freezer.
A small-time evangelist was arrested during a church service Monday after police found a body in his freezer believed to be his wife, a mother of eight.
Anthony Hopkins, 37, is charged with murder and incest after being arrested at a church in Jackson, Ala., during a revival. He was in the Mobile County jail Wednesday awaiting a bond hearing and appointment of an attorney.
Police told MyFOXGulfCoast.com that no one reported Hopkins' wife, 36-year-old Arletha Hopkins, missing. Then authorities heard Monday from a relative who reported years of sexual abuse, which sparked the investigation, according to the TV station.
The body was discovered covered in a freezer in a utility room during a police search of the home in Mobile.
Police await results of forensic tests to determine the cause of death, but Mobile Police Chief Phillip Garrett said authorities believe it is Hopkins' wife. The freezer was moved to a forensics lab.
Garrett said Hopkins was arrested at the revival in the Inspirational Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in rural Clarke County, where Hopkins has roots.
"They run in, and they had their guns out," pastor Beverly Jackson told MyFOXGulfCoast.com. "I didn't know what was going on. I though it was the alarm system had gone off.”
Jackson told reporters that Hopkins told her he was a single parent because his wife had died in childbirth.
Garrett said Hopkins, the father of six of his wife's eight children, has been charged with rape and sodomy in a separate case involving a female relative and could face more charges involving another relative.
Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said the children who lived with Hopkins — who ranged in age from 3 to 19 — have been taken into protective custody by the Department of Human Resources.
"Obviously, this situation has been an ordeal for them," Steve Giardini of the Child Advocacy Center told MyFOXGulfCoast.com. "But they're certainly better off than they were, there's no question about that."
Garrett said the Hopkins children were home-schooled. He said Hopkins "kept to himself," and apparently moved from place to place. Neighbors called him "Rev." because he attended church so often, loading the children into a van.
Police said he preached at various churches and did not appear to be affiliated with a particular denomination.
At the church in Jackson, Hopkins was delivering a message about forgiveness that drew encouraging "amens" from the congregation.
Clarke County Sheriff's Chief Investigator Sgt. Ron Baggett said he listened through the church door before assisting in the arrest about 10 p.m. Monday. About 25 people were in the congregation at the time.
Neighbors of the preacher are shocked by the news.
“We sit here all the time and never thought something like that would happen," neighbor Dascher Parker said.
Protests end 'executions' at Italy funfair
Posted 9 hours 39 minutes ago
Management at an Italian funfair have withdrawn an attraction allowing visitors to watch a dummy suffer a grisly execution in an electric chair, a news agency reported.
Ricardo Trebino, a director at Luna Park in a Milan suburb, told ANSA that "we have decided to pardon the prisoner" following consultations with the district's mayor and in light of public protests.
Italy has been at the forefront of a campaign at the United Nations General Assembly for a worldwide moratorium on the death penalty.
After paying one euro, visitors saw the mannequin, naked from the waist up, tremble and convulse whilst strapped in the chair, and its hair begin to burn, according to images shown on television news channel Sky24.
La Repubblica quoted funfair manager Yuri Simone as saying there were around 50 "executions" a day, with 150 on Sunday.

Parents ordered to change girl's Talula Does the Hula name
By New Zealand correspondent Kerri Ritchie
Posted Thu Jul 24, 2008 12:00pm AEST
A New Zealand judge has ordered that the parents of an eight-year-old girl change her name, saying it is highly embarrassing and makes the child a target for ridicule.
The girl, who lives in New Plymouth on the west coast of the north island, is named "Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii".
The Family court was told that the child is so mortified she has not told any of her friends her real name.
Judge Robert Murfitt ruled that the name was a social disability.
The girl's parents have separated and she has been placed under the court's guardianship while a new name is selected.
Judge Murfitt says he is appalled by the judgement of some parents.
He says in New Zealand there are children called Midnight Chardonnay, Number 16 Bus Shelter and Violence.

Albinos targeted in witchcraft killings

An undercover investigation by the BBC has found that albinos in Tanzania are still being murdered so their body parts can be used in witchcraft.
Two albinos have been killed in northern Tanzania in the past month despite government efforts to stamp out the practice.
A 52-year-old man was killed in his backyard as he ate a meal with his wife, and just a week ago, a seven-month-old baby was snatched from his parents' arms and hacked to death with machetes.
Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has ordered a census of all albinos in Tanzania to be carried out in a bid to offer protection.
But there are growing suspicions that elements within the Tanzanian police may be involved in the trade.

R.I. Police Arrest Man With Record .491 Blood Alcohol Level
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — State police say they arrested a man early Tuesday whose blood alcohol level was 0.491 percent — the highest ever recorded in Rhode Island for someone who wasn't dead.
Stanley Kobierowski was taken to a hospital, put in the detoxification unit and sedated, said Maj. Steven O'Donnell. He was arraigned Tuesday on charges of driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest, and he was released after promising to appear Friday at a court hearing.
"The person's lucky they survived," O'Donnell said. "There's no doubt he would have gotten killed or killed someone if he had continued on the route he was taking."
A phone listing for Kobierowski could not be found, and he did not have a lawyer in court Tuesday.
Kobierowski, 34, of North Providence, was arrested after he drove into a highway message board on Interstate 95 in Providence, O'Donnell said.
After police arrived, Kobierowski had trouble getting out of the car, then grabbed it and refused to move, forcing troopers to carry him to the breakdown lane before taking him back to their barracks, O'Donnell said.
A breath test showed blood alcohol readings of 0.489 percent, followed by 0.491, O'Donnell said, the highest readings state officials could remember for someone who didn't end up dead.
The legal limit in Rhode Island is 0.08. A level of 0.30 is classified as stupor, 0.4 is comatose and 0.5 is considered fatal, according to the health department.

Teen Sues Teacher for Calling Her Ugly
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
SAN DIEGO — A Spring Valley teenager says she was humiliated when a teacher allegedly called her ugly in front of classmates and booted the girl from class with a swift kick to the buttocks.
The Mount Miguel High School freshman says in a $75,000 San Diego County Superior Court lawsuit that she wanted to join the school choir as they delivered singing grams on Valentine's Day.
But teacher Heather Hargett allegedly called the 14-year-old "ugly" and a "brat" and kicked her after ordering her from the room.
The district declined comment.

Holy Moses! PBS documentary suggests Exodus not real
Hal Boedeker
July 21, 2008
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.
Abraham didn't exist? The Exodus didn't happen?
The Bible's Buried Secrets, a new PBS documentary, is likely to cause a furor.
"It challenges the Bible's stories if you want to read them literally, and that will disturb many people," says archaeologist William Dever, who specializes in Israel's history. "But it explains how and why these stories ever came to be told in the first place, and how and why they were written down."
The Nova program will premiere Nov. 18. PBS presented a clip and a panel discussion at the summer tour of the Television Critics Association.
The program says the Bible was written in the sixth century BC and that hundreds of authors contributed.
"At least the first five books of the Bible come together during the Babylonian exile," says producer Gary Glassman.
The program challenges long-held beliefs. Abraham, Sarah and their offspring probably didn't exist, says Carol Meyers, a religion professor at Duke University.
"These stories are unlikely to represent real historical events, but rather there's some kernel of ancient experience in there which has survived and which helps give identity to the people at the time the Bible finally took shape centuries and centuries later," Meyers says.
There's no archaeological evidence of the Exodus, either, she says, but "it doesn't mean that there's no kernel of truth to it."
Nova series producer Paula Apsell says she found it "extremely shocking" to learn that monotheism was a process that took hundreds of years.
"I was always brought up to believe that the minute Abraham and the patriarchs came on the scene, the Israelites accepted one God and there was just always one God and that was it," Apsell says. "I think people are going to really be stunned by that."
Another shocker: The program contradicts the biblical view that the Israelites came from somewhere else into the land of Canaan. "The film shows that they were Canaanites," Apsell says.

Texas to World Court: Execution still on!
Father of victim says U.N. body's order 'don't mean diddly'

Texas is refusing to bow to yesterday's World Court order to stay the Aug. 5 lethal injection of convicted rapist-killer and illegal alien Jose Medellin.
The highest U.N. court insisted that five scheduled executions of Mexicans be immediately halted until the cases undergo further review. Mexico's government filed a petition with the court last month because it said the men had been deprived of assistance from their consulates following their arrests.
According to Geneva Convention rules, illegal aliens must have access to their national consulates once they have been detained.
The U.N. court order echoes statements made by Mexico that "Texas has made clear that unless restrained, it will go forward with the execution without providing Mr. Medellin the mandated review and reconsideration," which will "irreparably" violate U.S. obligations to the World Court's 2004 directive, the Houston Chronicle reported.
Citing "the paramount interest in human life," Mexico said it would "for forever be deprived of the opportunity to vindicate its rights and those of the nationals concerned" if Medellin's execution continues as scheduled.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry's office rejected Mexico's complaint.
"The world court has no standing in Texas, and Texas is not bound by a ruling or edict from a foreign court," Perry spokesman Robert Black said. "It is easy to get caught up in discussions of international law and justice and treaties. It's very important to remember that these individuals are on death row for killing our citizens."
According to the Houston Chronicle, international law expert Sarah Cleveland warned if the U.S. ignores the U.N. court order, many other countries may follow its example.
"This can only come back to hurt U.S. citizens when they are detained abroad," she wrote in an e-mail to the newspaper. " ... When a global leader like the U.S. refuses to comply with its clear international legal obligations (and everyone agrees that this is a clear legal obligation), it undermines the willingness of other states to comply with their own obligations and it inspires them not to trust us to obey ours."
Randy Ertman, father of Jennifer, a 14-year-old girl Medellin raped and murdered, criticized the World Court for attempting to intervene.
"The world court don't mean diddly," he said. "This business belongs in the state of Texas. The people of the state of Texas support the execution. We thank them. The rest of them can go to h-ll."
Adolfo Peña, father of Elizabeth, a 16-year-old girl Medellin also raped and murdered, concurred with Ertman.
"I believe we've been through all the red tape we can go through," he told the Houston Chronicle. "It's time to rock and roll."

Favre plot grows
Vikings accused of tampering
By DON WALKER

The rivalry between the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings just got a lot hotter.
Packers/NFL
The Packers still hold Brett Favre's rights.
National Football League source said Wednesday night that the Packers had filed a tampering charge with the league against the Vikings in connection with alleged contact with Brett Favre.
The source said the Packers had provided evidence and information about the alleged contact. At this point, investigators for the league will look into the matter and decide what, if anything, to do. The source added that the Packers feel the case against the Vikings is strong.
Allegations of tampering are touchy subjects among professional sports franchises, and the penalties can include the loss of draft choices and fines.
The fact that the alleged contact involved Favre makes the case particularly sensitive because of his bitter dispute with the Packers, who still hold his rights. Additionally, the fact that the case involves the Vikings, a rival in the NFC North, is sure to fuel animosity between the two franchises.
Since Favre and his agent, James “Bus” Cook, told the Packers that the quarterback wanted to be released by the club, rumors about which teams would want Favre began to surface. One such club named in various media reports was the Vikings, although team officials said they were committed to quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.
Jeff Blumb, a Packers spokesman, said, “We are declining comment.”
Greg Aiello, an NFL spokesman, would not confirm the story and declined to comment. A Vikings spokesman did not return a phone call seeking comment.
The tampering charge was first reported by FoxSports.com. According to the FoxSports report, the Vikings were informed of the charge last week.
According to FoxSports, the report alleged that Favre had what it termed “inappropriate” dialogue with Minnesota offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a close Favre friend and former assistant coach with the Packers.
Bevell did not return a call seeking comment.
Earlier, Cook told ESPN.com that Favre would take his time applying for reinstatement in the NFL, saying that he and Favre “have no definite plans for reinstatement.”
“Right now, we have until the sixth week (of the regular season), and Brett has made it pretty clear that he is not willing to come in as a backup.
“If he asks for reinstatement and they start fining him $15,000 a day, well, that just doesn’t make sense,” Cook said.
Cook was referring to fines Favre would presumably face if he applied for reinstatement but didn’t show up for training camp. Camp begins July 28.
Added Cook: “We’re going to let Green Bay decide what they want to do. It’s their move.”
The Packers did not comment on Cook’s comments. The team, chiefly general manager Ted Thompson, have said they don’t plan to give Favre his outright release. Thompson has said he wants to move on with Aaron Rodgers as his starting quarterback.
The next chapter of the Favre saga could come as early as Saturday night. Favre is scheduled to be in Green Bay to formally introduce his old friend, center Frank Winters, as part of the Packer Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. In addition to Winters, nose tackle Gilbert Brown and video director Al Treml will be inducted.
The ceremony, which will be held in the Lambeau Field Atrium and has been sold out for months, is closed to the media. But on Saturday afternoon, Favre and the other presenters are expected to meet the media to talk only about the remarks they plan to make that evening.
It is a certainty that Favre will be asked to comment on his standoff with the Packers.
Meanwhile, Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, who landed an extended chat with Favre, broadcast additional portions Wednesday night of the interview that had not been aired the previous two nights.

40 die after deliverance prayer - Family of 3 dies of food poisoning
From Biola Azeez and Johnson Babajide - 16.07.2008
MORE than 40 members of the Deeper Life Church in and around Umuolighe in Alaoma community near Omoba in Isialangwa South Local Government Area of Abia State died mysteriously at the weekend shortly after a family deliverance prayer session.
The incident, which occurred early Saturday morning, came to people’s knowledge on Sunday. Nigerian Tribune gathered that one Mr. Martin Iheukwumere, a zonal coordinator of the Deeper Life Bible Church, had organised the family deliverance in his newly-built house in the community and had invited other church workers and family members.
Sources also said since he built the house, he had not slept there because of alleged spiritual attack, hence his decision to invite church members and relations for the service. It was also learnt that the prayer session, which began at about 11:00 p.m. on Friday, came to an end at about 2:00 a.m. on Saturday before tragedy struck.
According to one of the survivors, Linus Abba, the prayer had just ended when he left for the toilet. He, however, said he lost consciousness and slipped in the toilet and could not remember any other thing until he later became conscious at a nearby community hospital.
A source said that immediately after the prayer session, a mighty wind took over the newly-built house which lifted the people there gathered and tossed them around the building. The source further said that the pandemonium which resulted made them to collapse against another.
It was also gathered that the remains of the dead were infested with maggots while the whole area was taken over by a foul odour. More than 20 persons were said to have lost their lives there and then, while about three people were said to be critically ill and are now at a private hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Speaking during his visit to the area, the acting Commissioner of Police in the state, Ibrahim Maishanu, said autopsy would be conducted on the remains to ascertain the real cause of the deaths.
The traditional ruler of Alaoma, Eze John Onwukwe, described the incident as a disaster to the community, saying that it had been thrown into disarray.
The chairman of the local government area, Chief Anthony Agbazuere, announced the donation of N100,000 for the treatment of the eight survivors now in the hospital.
In another development, tragedy struck at Magongo in Ogori-Magongo Local Government Area of Kogi State, as three members of the same family died after an evening meal on Sunday while the second child and the fourth of the family are currently on admission at the state General Hospital, Okene.
According to sources, the family of one Mr. Iyesi Alikali took yam flour (Amala) food on Sunday evening before going to bed, but shortly after the meal, the mother, Mrs. Beatrice Eripe Alikali, was said to have complained of stomach ache and eventually gave up the ghost.
The father, Mr. Alikali, and his four-year-old daughter, Endurance, were said to have also died after complaining of stomach ache on Monday.
The death of the three people was said to have ignited crisis in the area where the younger brother of the husband, one Mr. Aiyesimi, was fingered to have poisoned the family.
A source from the town said that youths stormed the residence of Aiyesimi on Monday and beat him to stupor before the sister was said to have taken him to an unknown place in Edo State.
The state police spokesman, Mr. Onum Inalegwu, said he had not received any information about the incident.

94-Year-Old Avoids Charges of Soliciting Hooker
Wednesday, July 16, 2008
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,384161,00.html
BRADENTON, Fla. — A 94-year-old Bradenton man whose arrest for soliciting a prostitute became fodder for late-night comedians won't be prosecuted after all.
A judge tossed out the misdemeanor charge Tuesday, saying Frank Milio was entrapped by an undercover officer before his arrest in November.
The judge said the officer walked to Milio's car without being summoned and eventually got him to agree to pay for oral sex.
His attorney, Donald E. Grieco, said he was happy for Milio, whose arrest had blocked him from getting into an assisted-living facility. Milio suffers from dementia.
Grieco said Milio enjoys flirting with pretty women and never had any intention of paying for sex. But prosecutors argued that he knew exactly what he was doing.
Anheuser CEO Busch Won’t Have Executive Role

Bear crashes through doors at electronics store
AP

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - An intruder who broke into a Colorado Springs electronics store won't face any charges, even if authorities can find the culprit.
Seems no one wants to poke an angry bear.
Colorado Springs police confirm it was a bear who broke a sliding glass door at a Circuit City store Tuesday morning, then went inside to a customer waiting area where surveillance cameras recorded its every move.
The scared bear then ran back out the same broken glass door and headed for a tree.
Authorities say the young adult black bear had become spooked after setting off an alarm at a nearby Fazoli's restaurant.
Circuit City supervisor Dawn Greene joked that the bear probably wanted a new 72-inch LCD-screen television.
No one was hurt, except, perhaps, for the bear.

Elderly Women Get Life in L.A. Murder-for-Profit Scheme
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,383182,00.html
In April the women were convicted of a scheme in which they befriended homeless men, took out insurance policies on them and then killed them in murders staged to look like hit-and-run auto accidents. Prosecutors say the women collected $2.8 million before the scheme was uncovered.
The judge denounced the women, saying the men they killed needed only food, water and shelter and thought the women were going to help them.
"Instead, these unfortunate men were sacrificed on your altar of greed," Wesley said.
Both women were convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to murder for financial gain in the 1999 death of Paul Vados, 73, and the 2005 death of Kenneth McDavid, 50.
Both men were run over by cars in dark alleys. Police linked the cases when a detective investigating one overheard a colleague describe a similar case.

Defense attorneys had conceded the women were involved in insurance fraud but denied they had formed a murder conspiracy. Golay's attorney, Roger Jon Diamond, said during the trial that the women's idea was to insure old, sick homeless people who would die more quickly.
The jury that convicted the women in April saw a secretly recorded videotape of the defendants in a lockup after their arrests. Rutterschmidt berated Golay, saying her actions in taking out 23 insurance policies raised a red flag when the men died.
"It's your fault," Rutterschmidt told Golay. "You can't have that many insurances. ... You were greedy. That's the problem."

Beagle lost for 5 years, found 850 miles away

NEW YORK (AP) - Rocco, a beagle that strayed from a New York City yard five years ago, has been reunited with his owners - after being found 850 miles (1,370 kilometers) away in Georgia.
Randy Durrence, the supervisor at the Liberty County Animal Control in Hinseville, Georgia, told the New York Post that someone dropped off the pooch on July 5. A microchip embedded under Rocco's skin helped trace him to his family in New York - Jorge and Cristina Villacis.
The couple's daughter, Natalie, who was 5 years old when Rocco disappeared, was ecstatic.
She told the Post: "I cried hysterically - just like I did when they told me he was lost. I felt like I was in a dream."
Durrence says the shelter reunites many families with their pets but "it's unheard of" after so many years.

Nebraska Family Wins $40G Over Urine-Tainted Food
Tuesday, July 15, 2008
OMAHA, Neb. — A Sidney police officer and his family have won $40,000 from a restaurant that had served them food tainted by an employee's spit and urine.
In the lawsuit filed last year in Cheyenne County District Court, officer Keith Andrew and his wife said a Taco Bell employee urinated and spit in food served to them and their children in October 2005.
The lawsuit named North Platte-based Mid Plains Food and Lodging, owner of the KFC/Taco Bell.
A KFC spokesman, Rick Maynard, said KFC is committed to the highest levels of food safety.
"Our franchisee does not agree with the court's verdict, and they are looking at their legal options," Maynard said Monday.
The jury verdict was announced Friday.
In the lawsuit, the couple said their two sons, 4 and 7 at the time, took sick after they ate the food. The 4-year-old came "violently ill," the lawsuit said, with gastroenteritis and dehydration. The lawsuit said he vomited for hours and was forced to spend time in a hospital.
Other workers saw what Diedrich did, the lawsuit said, and reported it to management.
But the managers didn't inform the family, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit also suggested the family was the victim of a scheme that targeted police officers.
"Employees maintained 'special servings' of food reserved for ... officers," the lawsuit said. "The 'special servings' had been urinated in or spit in by KFC/Taco Bell employees. In fact, defendant's employees maintained a particular serving pan for use in creating 'special servings' of food plus employee urine."
An attorney for the Andrew family, Andy Snyder of Scottsbluff, said the employee who fouled the family's food admitted tainting the food of another officer as well.
Snyder said the verdict did not specify exactly how the jury believed the restaurant was negligent, but managers didn't discipline the worker involved, Casey Diedrich.
Diedrich could not be reached to comment Monday. There was no listing under his name in Nebraska.
In March 2007, Diedrich pleaded guilty to violating the Nebraska Pure Food Act and was fined $100, according to Cheyenne County Court records. The prosecution was for the same incident described in the lawsuit.
In June 2007, a company spokesman said Diedrich was eventually fired for missing work but not for any of the incidents the lawsuit cited.
Snyder said Monday that the restaurant did a poor job of vetting its staff.
"I'd advise them to get a better class of employees," Snyder said.

yeah, I think it's almost a done deal. Between Nov. 4th and Jan. 20th, the light turns green IMO. The only thing that may stay their hand is a McCain victory. The fact that Obama right now I think is talking with Fatah in Palestine says a lot about how much confidence the Olmert govt has in Sen. Obama.

Washington Mutual says its capital position is strong after recent $7.2 billion capital raise
SEATTLE (AP) -- Responding to a sharp plunge in its share price and investor worry about continued problems in the mortgage market, Washington Mutual said it has enough spare cash and strong capital ratios to handle the downturn.

Washington Mutual Inc. shares plunged 34.8 percent to end Monday at $3.23. Earlier in the session, shares hit a 17-year low of $3.03.
Investors have been worried about the solvency of some banks amid the sharp downturn in the mortgage market. Washington Mutual has been among those hit hardest by rising mortgage defaults. It recently raised $7.2 billion in cash to shore up its capital base.
The Seattle-based bank said it has more than $40 billion in excess liquidity and that it exceeds regulatory minimums to be considered "well capitalized."
Banks across the country have faced rising losses tied to a spike in mortgage defaults over the past year. With the housing market still weak, those losses are expected to continue to climb for the foreseeable future.
Lehman Brothers analyst Bruce Harting wrote in a research note that Washington Mutual will need to "substantially" increase its loss reserves to cover still-mounting losses in its mortgage portfolio.
Washington Mutual will likely take a $4 billion loss provision during the second quarter after setting aside about $3.5 billion during the first quarter, Harting wrote in the note.
Harting estimates Washington Mutual will eventually take $26 billion in losses from its current balance sheet, with $21 billion related to mortgages.
The bank lost more than $1.1 billion in the first quarter, mostly because of the hefty loan-loss reserve it took during the quarter.
Washington Mutual said it would provide a detailed report on its capital position and liquidity when it reports its second-quarter financial results July 22.

Exotic Snakes Wear Out Their Welcome at Va. Motel
Fairfax City police discovered 17 exotic snakes, two of them venomous, in a motel room after management notified them about a foul odor. (Fairfax City Police)

Sure, the movie "Snakes on a Plane" was scary. But how about this sequel: "Snakes in a Cheap Motel Room"?
Fairfax City police said they found 17 exotic snakes, 12 of them venomous, inside Room 11 of the Hy-Way Motel near Fairfax Circle on Thursday night after the motel's management alerted them to a foul odor. The snakes took up residence at the Hy-Way on Sunday and were not detected by the housekeeping staff because they were concealed in luggage, police said.
Two of the smaller snakes, possibly future meals for their larger brethren, passed away during their vacation at the Hy-Way, police said, creating the telltale odor that led to their sudden eviction yesterday.
Police said the reptiles might belong to an Arlington County man who proudly kept as many as 100 exotic snakes in his home until county authorities recently moved against him.
The snakes did not endear him to the neighbors, who occasionally came across the random Mexican lancehead rattlesnake rambling about the 'hood. So in May, Arlington passed an ordinance banning venomous snakes and other poisonous reptiles.
Fairfax City Lt. Mike Artone said that a man paid for a week in advance at the Hy-Way and that the man "may be involved in some kind of similar case in Arlington County." He did not disclose the man's name because he had not been charged with a crime -- though it has long been illegal in Fairfax City to harbor venomous snakes -- and had not been located by the police.
Arlington officials said yesterday that Peter T. Nguyen, 39, of Quintana Street in North Arlington, had been given a deadline of July 1 to remove all venomous creatures from his home. Police Detective Crystal Nosal said she did not know whether animal control officers had visited Nguyen to be sure his home was venom-free.
Fairfax City police said late yesterday that an "unnamed Arlington man" called them, after being contacted by a reporter, and volunteered that, yes, the snakes of the Hy-Way Motel were indeed his.
Lt. Bert Peacher said the man planned to come to police headquarters today and pick up his summons, a misdemeanor, for harboring venomous snakes, which could subject him to a fine if convicted. The man's name would be released then.
Nguyen could not be reached for comment yesterday. He declined to speak with WRC-TV (Channel 4).
Peacher said the man explained that he was in the process of snake divestiture, had sent a number of his scaly friends to Florida but had one last batch in the area. The man said that he had placed the deadly reptiles with a friend but that the friend had to return them unexpectedly. This led the man to stash them at the Hy-Way, Peacher said, and he was unaware that they had been discovered and relocated.
Fairfax City police checked other area motels and hotels and did not find any legless guests.
Police said the snakes had been stored in vented plastic boxes, which were placed inside large vinyl bags throughout Room 11. Housekeepers who checked the room did not see anything disturbed and had no reason to open the bags, including some next to the mirrored headboard. The guest who rented the room apparently was not staying there.
But the foul odor caused the motel's proprietor to call police Thursday night, Artone said, and after discovering the slithery but seemingly contained menagerie, officers backed off until more-expert snake-handlers could be summoned.
An animal control officer and two snake experts visited the Hy-Way yesterday to catalogue the snakes and oversee their removal to an exotic-animal zoo in central Virginia, police said. The breeds included African puff adders, cottonmouths, rhinoceros vipers, albino cottonmouths, speckled rattlesnakes and a black-headed python, police said.

Report: Bush Backs Israel Strike Plans on Iran
Sunday, July 13, 2008 7:19 AM
The Sunday Times of London reported this weekend that "President George W. Bush has told the Israeli government that he may be prepared to approve a future military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations with Tehran break down." The Times report quoted a senior Pentagon official as its source.
With increased resistance from the Pentagon and the November elections closing in, the White House may be choosing its next best option in dealing with Tehran: to have Israel launch strikes on Iran's nuclear weapons facilities.
The paper said Bush has told Israel it has an "amber light" to proceed.
“Amber means get on with your preparations, stand by for immediate attack and tell us when you’re ready,” the paper quoted a U.S. official as saying.
Military experts are not sure that Israel's military forces can do the job. Iran has dispersed its nuclear program sites around the country, and some weapons facilities are said to be deep within the earth. The U.S. has special bunker-busting bombs that could destroy such underground laboratories, but Israel does not.
Iran has made clear it will retaliate against Israel and the U.S. if either nation attacks it. Last week, Iran's military demonstrated its reach by firing nine long- and medium-range missiles -- including the modified Shahab-3 ballistic missile, which can easily strike Israel from western Iran.
Political factors may be playing a role in strike plans for both Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Bush is in lame-duck status, and Democratic Sen. Barack Obama, the front-runner to win the presidency in November, says he favors the use of diplomacy over force when dealing with Iran.
Olmert is facing a political crisis as corruption charges threaten his hold on office. Some Israeli political analysts say Olmert may order an attack on Iran to bolster his political standing in Jerusalem.
The Times cited one of Olmert's closest friends as quoting the prime minister: "In three months’ time it will be a different Middle East.”

no doubt, bud's market share in the US, which at almost half (!) is ridiculous, will go down. Their marketing costs will be cut in America - this is what made them such a success. Stupid. Why would they toss that out the window? $$$$$, I mean, €€€€€!
imagine when we all stop buying bud and buy something else..
That one caught me by surprise - I thought they had more fight in them than that. Reading between the lines, to me this translates into "slashing costs" which will include decreasing the work force. Inbev's loyalty will be to profit margins first and foremost.
half right - slurp up all you like of both and let the kiwis do the worrying for us. I was overjoyed to read that about coffee, since I have been "maximizing" my benefits for many years now, with no health probs. My cholesterol is lower than one of my siblings who has been a vegan for like 30 yrs, while I eat eggs, red meat, butter, cheese, hot dogs practically every day!
Anheuser Busch approves $50bn sale to InBev

Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch agreed last night to be taken over by Belgian rival InBev for $70 a share, marking an amicable end to a month-long takeover battle that had recently grown hostile.
Anheuser’s board held a meeting on Sunday afternoon to approve the $50bn (£25bn) deal, which will create a global brewing giant with ownership of some of the world’s best-known brands. InBev produces Stella Artois, Bass and Hoegaarden.

The new company will be called Anheuser-Busch InBev.
A meeting in New York on Friday between Mr Busch and Carlos Brito, InBev’s chief, was “gracious and positive”, according to one insider.
A few other issues, however, remained unclear ahead of an expected announcement by the company as early as Sunday evening.
Grupo Modelo, the Mexican brewer in which Anheuser owns a non-controlling half stake, has been agitating over the potential change of control, and the three parties have been working to reach a settlement.
Modelo, which brews Corona beer, has a right to first refusal if Anheuser tries to sell its ownership stake, but is widely believed not have the legal right to veto a broader takeover of Anheuser.
Modelo is arguing that it has a right under Mexican law to approve the deal, and is lobbying for favourable financial terms and operating independence.
InBev and Anheuser had also been negotiating on Sunday over the break-up fees they would attach to their deal. Both sides said they would push the other to agree to substantial break-up penalties. One insider said InBev was asking Anheuser to agree to a fee in the range of 2.5 per cent of the deal’s value.
InBev has committed to other promises it made when it first launched its formal offer. Aside from the deal’s price, which InBev agreed last week to boost from $65 per share, InBev’s willingness to maintain Anheuser’s heritage and general form proved key to Anheuser’s board as it weighed the offer.
so u want us to drink more coffee and no water.... lol sounds like a plan
