Solvents

Polymers

We are working with Kuraray to use farnesene to replace petroleum-derived feedstock in the production of specified classes of high-performing polymers for the tire industry. Initial testing indicates that our renewable hydrocarbon provides differentiated performance for rubber tires by reducing rolling resistance, which improves fuel economy, without reduction in tire wear.
Isoprene

Our technology platform is able to produce other building blocks with the potential to provide an array of new renewable polymers to serve a variety of markets. One area of great promise is isoprene for tires. We are working with Michelin and Braskem to develop and commercialize renewable isoprene from plant sugars."

Environmental Stewardship

We are initially focused our production of Biofene using Brazilian sugarcane as our feedstock. Why? Because sugarcane remains the most abundant source of plant sugars at low cost and with relative price stability. Brazil’s favorable climate and soil conditions help make sugarcane one of the most photosynthetically efficient plants widely available on earth.

Carbon lifecycle analysis using sugarcane as a feedstock showed that Amyris renewable fuels can contribute to a greater than 80% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels, and that use of Amyris chemicals could sequester as much a three tons of carbon dioxide per ton of chemicals used. And, thanks to our collaboration with our partners, we have shown that our engineered yeast strains are capable of utilizing cellulosic sugars, paving the way for even greater environmental benefit.

We are working with a number of partners to drive sustainability. In May 2014, we became the first biomaterial producer with operations in Brazil to receive certification by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and are committed to leading the way in sustainable practices in our industry around the world. We are working other stakeholders, such as Bonsucro, the world’s leading sugarcane sustainability standard, to further reduce the impact of our operations on the environment and improve our sustainable practices in the sugarcane industry.
