I'd have to do a bit more research on the exact article / content.....but, from an insiders view (since retired), I'd
just have to say the writer(s) are referring to the fairly
stable business on the cookie/cracker/snack side.

Although there's very nice share in that entire stable and
some growth through product spinoffs, holiday varieties, etc.
it's still considered a low/no growth business.

In some cases, it's a matter of grabbing more share from
a shrinking pie ie. impact/negative aspects of category ie. unhealthy, ingredients, etc. >>>> note, that's not me, it's
the ANALysts!

While I see some room for growth outside USA for "all other
than confectionary businesses" ---- probably more bent on
acquired lines/products w/ non-domestic appeal versus the
ones WE all like ie. Oreo, Ritz, etc. (purely based on the
fact TASTE BUDS change between U.S.A. / Europe / Asia / all other.

At MDLZ, there's a huge opportunity to "exploit the unique combination of gross margins and growth" of the confectionary business in emerging markets, but other parts of the business offset that huge potential.

I’m not clear on exactly which business segments they are dismissing as unattractive.

Firm sees "lots of potential in the new KRFT," including a huge dividend payout, "refreshingly realistic guidance that doesn't fixate on a volume or revenue growth target" and a slow-growing grocery business that's " out-punching U.S. peers." But shares a bit too pricey vs peers. At MDLZ, there's a huge opportunity to "exploit the unique combination of gross margins and growth" of the confectionary business in emerging markets, but other parts of the business offset that huge potential. I favor MDLZ over KRFT too. I had owned KFT for years. When they split, I decided to let KRFT go and buy more MDLZ. I feel it has better growth. Hopefully the stock will rebound soon.

Mondelez CEO: Looking for Global Growth with Snack Platforms -CNBC

Mondelez International Inc. (MDLZ:$28.008,0$0.188,00.68%) chief executive Irene Rosenfeld said Wednesday on CNBC that "organic opportunities are the one biggest single opportunity for growth" with the spin off of the Mondelez (MDLZ:$28.008,0$0.188,00.68%) power snack group from its Kraft Foods grocery group.

"We see tremendous opportunities to take snacking platforms from one market to the next, to take markets like India and China for example, and put new products through those routes to market."

Ms. Rosenfeld said in future "tack-on acquisitions" particularly in developing markets to supplement some of their capabilities would be a "very good use" of their currency.
