WOW.Canadian Doctors Call For A Ban On MMA After Fighter Undergoes Emergency Brain Surgery Posted By: Charttopper Comments(0)
According to the CBC News, Physicians belonging to the British Columbia Medical Association in Canada, are calling for a provincial ban on the sport of mixed martial arts after an amateur fighter underwent emergency brain surgery following an event last weekend in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Normally there are always various groups calling for a ban on the sport, or simply blocking legislation that would allow the sport, such as in New York.
I felt this was significant enough to write about for several reasons, but I’ll provide some more background on what apparently last weekend.
Last weekend a “So You Wanna Fight?” event was held in Kamloops, allowing amateur fighters to compete in a one night tournament style event. The winner, a Mike Boyer, fought three times during the evening, and received $500 for his efforts.
The “So You Wanna Fight?” promotion had medical staff check each fighter out after each bout, but according to Boyer, staff focused less and less on his injuries after each victory. After the event, Boyer started getting a bad headache, with nausea and vomiting, and eventually blacked out. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and had to undergo emergency brain surgery to repair bleeding of the brain.
“The first fight they checked my eyes, just kind of sat there with me and then let me go,” he said. “And then the second one everyone was coming up congratulating me, so they didn’t even really look at me. They were just like, ‘Oh yeah, you’re fine… ‘”
“I just started getting a really bad headache, like it was out of the ordinary — a lot of pressure on my head, I started feeling really woozy and then it wouldn’t go away … it got worse and worse, and then I threw up.”
Boyer eventually blacked out, and was rushed to hospital by paramedics.
“I was told that I had severe bleeding on the brain and that they’d have to go in and drill to relieve the pressure. I was under for six hours,” Boyer said. “I have like 70 staples in the side of my head.”
Mixed martial arts in British Columbia is not regulated by a single organization like it is in the Province of Ontario, or like it is in Nevada with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Cities, Tribal commissions (such as the River Cree Combative Sports Commission which oversaw past MFC events near Edmonton, Alberta), and other various organizations govern the sport in that Province.
Now to get to my rant.
It’s these poorly led events governed by these small commissions that give the sport of mixed martial arts a bad name.
As we’ve already seen recently with the whole Kim Couture incident with the Calgary Combative Sports Commission, having a properly run organization goes along way for credibility and fighter safety (to recap, Couture was choked unconscious at an AX Combat 1 event earlier this month, with the submission being held for a good ten count while the referee looked on. Afterwards the referee was not disciplined for his failure to protect Couture, and in fact Couture was not even medically cleared to fight at the event due to a previous medical suspension from the New Jersey State Athletic Commission, which the Calgary commission apparently ignored).
Also, concerning an issue I have with these small commissions, is the poor quality of judging provided for events these organizations oversee. Anyone who watched UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin will remember the entirely sh*t scoring by the commissions judges at the Vancouver event. Mark Munoz vs. Demian Maia (29–28, 29–28, 30–27) and Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes (29–28, 29–28, 30–27)? What judge scored each bout a 30-27 in favor of Munoz and Florian, after their opponents clearly took one round in each of those fights.
Allowing amateur’s to fight three times in one night (I haven’t found the exact information on the rules but I believe participants were fighting 2 rounds of three minutes for each bout) is ridiculous. Even UFC President Dana White did away with amateur fights on the Strikeforce Challengers cards after Zuffa’s purchase of the formal rival.
From what Mr. Boyer has spoken about his post fight medical examinations, it appears that the proper staff were not on hand and/or obviously not performing their job properly. Allowing any amateur to step inside the cage/ring without a pre-fight screening is dangerous enough, but not following matches up with proper medical screening can be fatal, especially in an amateur who may not know how to recognize an injury.
To further my point on how damaging small promotions like this can be for the sport of mixed martial arts, it appears as if the website for the “So You Wanna Fight?” promotion (http://www.soyouwannafight.com/), as well as their Facebook page, have both been taken down. It would seem that despite organizer and promoter Don Arnott’s recent comments defending his promotion, he has decided to hide rather than face his critics.
“In 20 years and over 3,000 matches, have you ever heard of negative thing after any event, where there’s been somebody hurt or it’s been bad? There hasn’t been. There’s been no bad publicity, there’s been no negativism on, it’s never happened.”
Now the B.C. Medical Association is calling for an outright ban on the sport, which really doesn’t effect most of us but it does effect the future plans of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, who have already held two events in the City of Vancouver in the past.
In the article the BCMA’s president, Dr. Nasir Jetha, does call for stronger legislation, which I can agree with following this poor example, but calls for an outright ban on the sport. This only showcases the need to improve public education of the sport of mixed martial arts in order to prevent these knee-jerk reactions from public figures.
Hopefully this incident provides more positive influences than negative ones.

ProElite Stock Ready for a Comeback
The resurrected ProElite (PELE.PK) looks ready to break onto the stock market scene like few stocks have in recent history. Recently, ProElite has been almost impossible to trade due to a “hold” on trading by the Depository Trust Company (DTC) whose mission is "to provide an efficient and safe way for buyers and sellers of securities to make their exchange, and thus "clear and settle" transactions". The hold was the result of some alleged wrongdoing by some individuals on the fringes of involvement with the company several years ago before the current management took over. It appears that the DTC is about to release it's grip on the stock and ProElite will once again be able to trade freely.
The stock has a float of around 59 million which is fairly tightly held as evidenced by the quick run up in March when information surfaced that the company had been making offers to purchase Strikeforce. At that time, the stock jumped from .01 per share to more then .20 per share in two days based on the news that ProElite had reportedly made a bid for Strikeforce worth around $40 million. This seemed to be the catalyst that forced the UFC/Zuffa to act by outbidding ProElite and ultimately taking the rival organization under their wing.
Since the UFC is privately held, ProElite is the only serious publicly held investment for those wanting to invest in the worlds fastest growing sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). There are other stocks that are currently on the fringes of involvement with MMA, but PELE is the only serious opportunity for fans and investors to get a piece of a real MMA organization.
Stratus Media (SMDI.OB),the parent company of ProElite, is well stocked with individuals ready to move the company back to its once prominent position in the sport. They have key individuals in positions that have worked with major media outlets worldwide, and with the recent announcements of Rich Chou and T Jay Thompson being added to the mix, they now have some highly regarded MMA insiders as part of the team.
In several interviews lately, Thompson has indicated that “ProElite 2.0” as he refers to the new incarnation of the company, is determined to not make the mistakes of the “old” company. He has often mentioned that the new company will be run “lean and mean” with out the excessive spending and questionable decision making that helped bring down the old company.
The first event for the revived ProElite will be August 27 in Hawaii and will reportedly feature former UFC heavyweight champion Andre Arlovski along with notables and former UFC fighters Kendall Grove, Joe Riggs and Drew McFedries. Thompson has also stated he wants to feature a mix of established fighters and up and comers. Among the up and comers rumored for the card are the pro debut of NCAA wrestling champion Mark Ellis, female Olympic wrestling silver medalist Sara McMann, and the pro debut of Reagan Penn the brother of UFC superstar BJ Penn.
Back in '07 under the old owners, PELE stock reached as high as $15 a share despite the huge debt and mismanagement of the old leadership. Even after the Kimbo Slice debacle, the stock held the $2 to $5 range until rumors of bankruptcy surfaced. The company never filed BK and once the company had parted ways with the likes of Gary Shaw and company, Chuck Champion (the remaining principal in the company) was able to work deals to clear the books of the massive debt the old management had run up.
Fast forward to now and we have a revived, debt free company that is determined to not make the same mistakes. The company has retained the ProElite and EliteXC brands along with Cage Rage, Icon Sports, and Spirit MC. Speculation has it that the company has been sitting on news that will be released as soon as the DTC releases its hold. The company has already indicated the first event will stream live and free on Sherdog.com and that a TV deal will likely be in place for the second event, some time in November. The company has also expressed a desire to uplist the stock to a higher exchange at some point in the future. The announcement of the complete fight card for the August event will be made in the next few days. Also there will be the launch of the new ProElite website.
It is unclear exactly when the DTC release will be final. There have been reports that the release has actually already happened and the wait now is for administrative matters to be finalized and announced before the stock can be traded freely.
Expectations are that the stock price should reach levels comparable to a similar point in time when the original stock was established which would place the stock price as high as $2 share. Back then, the stock price continued to climb as each new event was announced and investors are looking for the same price appreciation this time around. If that proves to be the case, it would indicated a huge buying opportunity at the current price of .325 (as of 7.22.2011). If expectations become reality, this could make many happy investors in the days to come as the company grows along with the sport.
Of course as always, I recommend that everyone do their due diligence on this and any other stock.

Alsitair Overeem Booted From Strikeforce Grand Prix, Daniel Cormier Steps In As Replacement
Posted July 18, 2011 Comments(0)
In an earlier interview today on The MMA Hour, Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair ‘Demolition Man’ Overeem (35-11, 1 NC) said he was having problems with Strikeforce over the Sept. 10 date set for the semi-final bouts of the Heavyweight Grand Prix. And that he had been threatened with his removal from the tournament should he not choose to fight on that date.
Well it seems that Zuffa/Strikeforce has called his bluff by removing him from the tournament and replacing him with former Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier (8-0).
News of the change was first reported by Tatame.com and was later confirmed by MMAjunkie.com on Monday.
Overeem earned his way into the semi-finals by beating Fabricio Werdum last month. The ‘Demolition Man’ felt the Sept. 10 date was too soon and that he had to heal from a broken toe, suffered before the bout, as well as injuries which occurred against Werdum.
The Dutch heavyweight had been scheduled to meet Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva in the semi-finals, which is set to take place on Sept. 10 at an unknown location at this time.
Cormier comes in with a perfect 8-0 record, having earned a unanimous decision over Jeff Monson at last months Overeem vs. Werdum event.
MMAjunkie spoke to ‘Bigfoot’ Silva to garner his thoughts on the situation.
“I don’t care who they put against me. If Overeem doesn’t want to fight because his toe is hurt, then get me King Kong. Get Josh Barnett and Sergei Kharitonov both. I’ll fight them both at the same time. I’m very frustrated and disappointed that someone who is considered one of the best fighters in the world would basically withdraw from the competition and refuse to fight me. Overeem is a great guy, but I don’t really like what he’s doing right now as a fighter. Either way, I don’t pick my opponents. I would have much rather Cain Velasquez stepped in for Overeem because I want to prove I’m the best heavyweight in the world. But I’m not taking Cormier lightly, either. I’ll continue to train just as hard as if I was still facing Overeem.”
Overeem has expressed an interest in boxing expressing a desire to challenge champion boxers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, noting that “if the fans want it” he would work towards making it happen.

Overeem couldn't fight his fight because he was so worried about defending the take down. Silva v Overeem should be a real good fight.
Agreed...Dana must be pissed and sets justification for a heavy weight superbout between UFC and SF. If this is the new Overeem, he better get back in the gym cause Cain Velasquez will give him brain damage.
very disappointed.
Next Round Semis will be war on both matches. There is no other way.Since all 4 fighters will have to fight.
Or someone gets knocked out.
Jorge Masvidal defeats K.J. Noons was the only good fight
I was so stoked for these fights last night and it basically sucked! It was almost like watching fake wrestling, very poor...
Josh Barnett def. Brett Rogers - Rogers looked like that douche James Tony on the ground. Barnett looked like he hasn't worked out in a few years.
Jorge Masvidal defeats K.J. Noons - Noons boxing was terrible against Jorge, Jorge had a nice reach and just kept catching noons as he came in, noons just couldn't adjust.
Daniel Cormier def. Jeff Monson - Monson looked terrible, he moved like he was bloated on steroids, that was the biggest and slowest I ever seen him, very disappointing for his first and maybe last fight with strikeforce.
Chad Griggs def. Valentijn Overeem - Poor showing by Overeems brother.
Alistair Overeem def. Fabricio Werdum - Extremely bad! WTF was Werdum doing? and WTF was Overeem doing? Where was the Overeem who drops bombs with his fist and leg kicks? What a 3 ring circus that was for both fighters!
I was wrong. Third round and this fight is an embarrassment.
Revenge time for Overeem. No stopping him.
Enjoy a quick fight.
Can I change to Barnett before the fights over? lol
Dont confuse the Overeem that just lost to Chad with the Overeem that im going for. That was his older brother that just lost.
