I don't think many people realize the impact of the legalization of marijuana. The law books are about to be rewritten. Pharmaceutical companies are scrambling. So are companies like RJ Reynolds, the makers of Marlboro.
The wheels of change have been set in motion. The competition is about to get nasty.
Some food for thought...
There will always be a limited need for Medical Marijuana. Children will need a prescription. Marijuana may be legal in most states by the end of the year but, I can't imagine the parents of the children that need CBD knowing what they should choose in a store that sells 50 different types of marijuana. Nor would they trust the advice of Joe Schmoe behind the counter, they'll more than likely consult a pediatric physician. Children with certain disabilities don't need to get high, they need the CBDs.
I want to get high just as much as anyone else but, let's not lose the focus on what the MJ movement could do for millions of children and their parents. The parents won't have to sit back and watch their child suffer, they won't have to face prosecution for helping their child to live somewhat of a normal life and maybe the child, who doesn't have a voice in the matter, may live a normal life.
That's all the movement has meant to me since I saw an episode of 20/20 4 or 5 years ago about a child that was diagnosed with ADHD, his mother tried everything the 'normal' doctors prescribed and it didn't help. She came across a doctor that prescribed marijuana and 20 minutes after taking it, he told his mother "I love you mommy" for the first time in 4 years of his natural born life.
Play the play, don't get caught up in the hype. Make the money, swing trade. Grab the vapo, do what you need to do but, don't lose focus on what this is all about.

5 Historical Pro-Pot Quotes
#5 ~ Homer Simpson - "Prohibition? HA! They tried that in the movies and it didn't work”
#4 ~ Ian Fleming - “Prohibition is the trigger of crime.”
#3 ~ Al Capone - “Prohibition has made nothing but trouble”
#2 ~ Mark Twain - "Prohibition only drives drunkenness behind doors and into dark places, and does not cure it, or even diminish it."
#1 ~ Abraham Lincoln - "Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."

New Hampshire House to Vote on Marijuana Legalization Today
By Thomas H. Clarke | The Daily Chronic January 15, 2014
CONCORD, NH — The New Hampshire House is expected to vote on a bill Wednesday that, if passed, would legalize and tax marijuana in the state. The vote was originally scheduled for last week, but was postponed.
If passed, House Bill 492 would legalize up to 1 ounce of marijuana for recreational use for anyone age 21 and older and allow adults to grow up to six plants for personal use.
The bill would allow for licensed and regulated marijuana retail stores, in addition to licensed facilities to cultivate, and manufacture marijuana. The bill would also impose a $30 per ounce tax on retail sales.
The bill faces an uncertain future, as Gov. Maggie Hassan told WMUR-TV last week that she would veto the bill if it were to pass.
“I don’t support the decriminalization of marijuana any further, and I would veto it if it comes to my desk,” she said.
State Rep. Steve Vaillancourt, a Manchester Republican supporting the bill, says the legislation is modeled after one approved by Colorado voters last year and is similar to one Washington voters passed.
“Nothing in the bill would allow anyone to drive under the influence of marijuana or any other substance. By legalizing, regulating and taxing (marijuana), society would in effect be taking the profit away from illegal operations which truly harm society,” he wrote fellow representatives in support of the bill.
Vaillancourt said taxing marijuana would produce millions of dollars in tax revenue. He noted that the bill would not be effective until July 1 to provide time to implement it properly.
Opponents argue marijuana is bad for people’s health and would be difficult to regulate.
Criminal Justice and Public Safety Chairwoman Laura Pantelakos also noted that marijuana remains illegal under federal law.
“If New Hampshire were to legalize and regulate marijuana, it would create an unclear picture of the state versus federal law enforcement, particularly since the (Department of Justice) has stated it will rely on states that legalize to strictly enforce and regulate marijuana,” Pantelakos said in a report to the House. She said that could shift regulatory costs onto the state.
Lawmakers have considered but rejected decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana for recreational use in the past, most recently last session.
If the bill passes the House, it faces a doubtful future. The Senate rejected a bill to decriminalize possession of up to one-quarter ounce of marijuana last year, and Gov. Hassan opposes any further marijuana reform in the state.
A similar bill, HB 1705, fell one vote short of being approved by the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee in 2012.

Marijuana Stock Scams
Update: In early January 2014, new laws regarding the legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational purposes went into effect in a number of states. At the same time, media coverage of the issue increased, as did investor interest in shares of marijuana-related companies. In some cases, volumes for the stock of otherwise thinly traded, marijuana-related companies increased dramatically—and prices became quite volatile.
We are reissuing this alert to warn investors not only about the potential for fraud in this arena, but also to reiterate the risks of investing in thinly traded companies about which little is known. Regardless of industry sector, any so-called "hot" stock can burn your portfolio. Rather than getting swept away, take time before you invest to learn more about the company, its products or services and the people running it. And be sure you carefully assess the company’s prospects for success.

Marijuana market is 'twice' previous estimates
January 3, 2014
Marijuana consumption is twice as large as previously estimated, according to a recent study by the RAND Corporation.
The study examined marijuana users in the state of Washington. It was conducted on behalf of state officials to prepare for sale and taxation of marijuana.
“Information we collected from marijuana users in Washington prompted us to conclude that consumption is significantly larger than previously estimated,” said Beau Kilmer, the study's lead author.
Previously, state officials estimated that marijuana use in Washington would be 85 metric tons. Using new methods, the researchers concluded that marijuana use would instead be 175 metric tons.
In 2012, voters in Washington state passed an initiative allowing adults to possess up to one ounce of marijuana for non-medical use.
Understanding the size and composition of the marijuana market helped state officials to accurately project tax revenues for the state.
The proposed tax of 25% applies to producers, processors, and retailers. The revenues will be used to fund substances abuse treatment, prevention and research.
Researchers compiled the marijuana consumption estimates using a novel web-based survey. The survey displayed photographs of marijuana to help participants better report the actual quantity that they used.
According to researchers, previous studies underestimated the amount of marijuana consumed per person.

Colorado: Price Of Legal Marijuana Soars With High Demand
By Steve Elliott
Hemp News
On the first day of legal recreational marijuana sales in Colorado, retailers were selling top-shelf cannabis at prices up to $400 per ounce, not including taxes, according to reports.
"I think people were a little bit surprised at the price," said Rachel Gillette, executive director of Colorado NORML, reports Erik Ortiz at NBC News.
Medical marijuana patients, who have been able to buy their cannabis for medicinal use at Colorado dispensaries since 2010, are used to paying around $250 an ounce, according to Gillette.
Colorado doesn't impose any price restrictions on marijuana, leaving the market open to supply and demand. One shop was selling marijuana on Wednesday for $70 an eighth-ounce -- a markup of $25 from the previous day's price of $45, reports The Associated Press.
"It's a new industry; it's a new market," Gillette said "I think things will work themselves out in a few years. We saw the same thing happen with the medical marijuana industry before the prices came down."
Industry observers also pointed out that while prices may be initially high in Colorado's legal marijuana market, along with that high price comes arrest protection.
A Colorado State University report released last April predicted retail prices ending up around $185 an ounce.
"My sense is that competition will eventually arise ... and costs will fall below what the black market wants," said Phyllis Resnick, lead economist at Colorado State's Colorado Futures Center.
Medical marijuana patients shouldn't be affected by the high recreational pot prices and the long lines to buy it, according to Mason Tvert, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project. Colorado had the good sense to keep the two systems separate, unlike Washington state, where medical marijuana is being "rolled into" the highly taxed recreational market under legalization measure Initiative 502.
Medical cannabis isn't subjected to the special sales tax put on recreational marijuana; there are also dispensaries devoted to medical marijuana only, so patients shouldn't have to wait for hours to buy it.
Meanwhile, law enforcement in areas bordering Colorado are complaining.
It's "almost like looking at a scene in a Cheech and Chong movie," claimed Sheriff Dave O'Malley of Albany County, Wyoming, "where they would pull over a car for speeding and the windows would all come down and the smoke would come billowing out of the cars."

Over $1 Million Worth of Marijuana Sold on First Day of Legalization in Colorado
The response to the first day of legal weed in Colorado was overwhelmingly positive.
According to Colorado's 9 News, marijuana shops across the state did record numbers on day one, raking in over $ 1 million. Smokers, who can now be referred to as "shoppers," came out in droves to legally purchase marijuana for recreational purposes, long lines be damned.
Andre Barr, who journeyed from Niles, Mich., said the wait "[was] nothing," as he was just happy to be a part of history. Of the 24 weed shops that were open in Colorado on Wednesday, the bulk of them were located in Denver. With the exception of the aforementioned long lines and the occasional instance of public smoking, there was no conflict.

First state-licensed marijuana retailers to open Jan. 1 in Colorado
Possession, cultivation and private personal consumption of marijuana by adults for the sake of just getting high has already been legal in Colorado for more than year under a state constitutional amendment approved by voters.
But starting Jan. 1, cannabis will be legally sold and taxed at specially regulated retailers in a system modeled after a regime many states have in place for alcohol sales - but which exists for marijuana nowhere outside of Colorado.

A gleaming white Apple store of weed is how Andy Williams sees his new Denver marijuana dispensary.
Two floors of pot-growing rooms will have windows showing the shopping public how the mind-altering plant is grown. Shoppers will be able to peruse drying marijuana buds and see pot trimmers at work separating the valuable flowers from the less-prized stems and leaves.
"It's going to be all white and beautiful," the 45-year-old ex-industrial engineer explains, excitedly gesturing around what just a few weeks ago was an empty warehouse space that will eventually house 40,000 square feet of cannabis strains.

A.P. Poll Finds Falling Resistance To Marijuana Legalization
A new A.P. poll finds that the number of Americans who oppose marijuana legalization has fallen dramatically in the last few years. In a survey completed last week, 29 percent of respondents said they opposed “legalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use,” compared to 55 percent in 2010. A.P. notes that the 2010 survey was conducted by phone, while the new one was conducted online, a method that tends to boost neutral responses. The share of respondents who said they “neither favor nor oppose” legalizing marijuana tripled between 2010 and 2013, while the percentage favoring legalization rose only slightly. Still, the A.P. numbers are consistent with other surveys in finding increased receptiveness to repealing marijuana prohibition.

Kansas Billboard Campaign Launched To Support Marijuana Legalization
Posted by Johnny Green at 8:00 AM on November 7, 2013
The marijuana activist organization ‘Fire It Up Kansas’ is back in the headlines, announcing that they are launching a billboard campaign to push for legalizing marijuana. The first billboard is being placed near the Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane, and more are expected to pop up soon. Currently under Kansas law, possession of any amount of marijuana (first offense) is a misdemeanor, punishable by 1 year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Any subsequent offense is a misdemeanor or felony (up to the judge), punishable by 10-42 months in jail/prison, and a $100,000 fine.
