Productivity is the amount of [talent] that can be demonstrated in a period of time. Money is simply a representation of productivity, it is not actually productivity. That's how we see it anyway.
Hi John,
This Alum Greenspurt economy is a bloody (w)itch, and there are lots of us who have put in a lot of Pro Bono time to help friends and companies advance their technologies.
But, as with your experience, you can only afford to do so much of that before you have to consider your own bottom line. Hope things are working out for you.
I sure hope Dave can pull something together fairly soon.
John
MCUL Engineer VP
As former MCUL engineering VP I can assure that MCUL has solid management in Dave Meilahn; extreme frustration was waiting on promised funding which never materialized. ROI is 3 years out which killed great product enthusiasm once prospective financiers got back home. I left after working for free for 6 months.
There's money out there, but it's not being made available to operations with more that a 2-year ROI. And, it's extremely hard to find/secure unless someone is dumb enough to sign on to the goofy CD death spirals or grossly aggregious VC rape offerings.
I personally located $1/4MM and a DOE grant for one of my R&D clients in 2002. That was quite a personal education. It was a bloody (w)itch getting that money, since I do not have a Harvard background in corporate fianance or lots of upper floor STREET connections.
I think that the current MCUL management could make substantial progress if they could find favorable financing. If you have some sources, put something together and see if you can help them make a go of it.
The technology is very sound by my analysis, and conversations with some high-powered fish biology specialists.
John
We disagree. There is plenty of money available. But, like everything else, it's a bloody stinker finding effective management.
Like everything else, funding is a bloody stinker to come by.
Been a while since I talked to them, why don't you give them a buzz a let us know....
John
What ever happened to MCUL?? Great idea, great technology - we've been watching for it for years and years. The world is begging for this product. How could it fail?

Mariculture Systems Inc., Clears Way for the Installation and Operation of Their SARGO Closed Containment Fish Farming Technology
EDMONDS, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 4, 2003--Mariculture
Systems Inc. (OTCBB:MCUL) announced today that British Columbia Land &
Water Inc., granted an expansion to the farm site that will be the
home of Mariculture Systems Inc., and its SARGO(TM) closed containment
fish rearing technology. The license helps clear the way for the
installation and operation of a full production facility capable of
producing 500 ton of finfish. Installation is scheduled to begin in
the 2nd quarter of 2003 with 200,000 already hatched juvenile Chinook
salmon that will be ready for delivery to the SARGO reservoirs in
August/September 2003.
The demonstration/research farm is to be installed near Campbell
River, BC, Canada. The operation is to validate the economic and
environmental success of their Washington State based pilot facility
to the aquaculture industry. The Company desires to show that
closed-containment is not only economically viable, but more
profitable than existing open net pen farming.
Business Summary
Mariculture Systems Inc., was founded and incorporated in 1994 for
the purpose of creating aquaculture products.
Mariculture Systems' proprietary SARGO System is an intensive
aquaculture system for salt or fresh water. Each farm is completely
self-contained, with backup life-support systems to ensure the safety
of the fish crop. SARGO technology facilitates a high degree of system
automation.

Chucka, no matter how confusing you were, you showed iron constraint, and extreme responsiveness. Aside from your very confusing nature, you are professional and are a good example. I think the confusion is more internet style than anything else and can be mostly amusing, but sometimes annoying to some. Mariculture Systems to Install a SARGO(TM) FINFARM In British Columbia, Canada
EDMONDS, Wash., July 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mariculture Systems, Inc., (OTC Bulletin Board: MCUL), announced today that a British Columbia, Canada-based aquaculture corporation signed a letter of intent to install and operate Mariculture's patented SARGO(TM) fish rearing technology. The $1.8 million dollar project is being scheduled for construction later in 2002, conditional on a permit expansion by British Columbia's Provincial Government, and will be a demonstration facility for Mariculture.
Mariculture's Vice President Rick Luce stated, "The proposed sale provides Mariculture with access to the farm and to production data for future sales activities. We intend to show our customers that our closed- containment system is not only environmentally friendly, but more profitable as compared to traditional systems."
The farm will consist of four SARGO reservoirs, systems and controls and will be capable of producing 500 metric tons of fish. The system is revolutionary in its ability to contain and collect solid wastes.
Luce continued, "Our ability to collect waste is key. Once collected, the waste can be processed as a high nitrogen fertilizer and/or converted into an alternative source of power. The farm will be used to study positive applications for the byproducts of the farm."
The SARGO technology utilizes solid-wall reservoirs to isolate the fish crop from surface contaminants and interaction with predators, while at the same time capturing and containing solid wastes in near-shore ocean and lake locations. Moving reservoir technologies to the source of water eliminates the need for a large coastal land investment and eliminates the need to lift water great heights, significantly reducing operating costs.
About Mariculture Systems, Inc.

"Mariculture Systems Profiled in OTC Financial Network Report"
FRIDAY , JUNE 07, 2002 08:30 AM
EDMONDS, Wash., Jun 7, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Mariculture Systems (OTC Bulletin Board: MCUL), a developer, manufacturer, and marketer of proprietary closed-containment fish farm systems, announced today that OTC Financial Network, a division of National Financial Communications Corp., has issued a corporate profile on the Company. Interested parties can view the report online at http://www.otcfn.com/mcul/report.html or call 888-678-7078 for reprints.
The OTC Financial Network InvestorFacts report provides an overview of Mariculture's business - patented fish rearing system - and growth strategy for global market penetration.
Geoffrey Eiten, president of National Financial Communications, stated, "An increase in the demand for fish, paired with a decrease in the availability of fish on a global spectrum, have left producers struggling to meet this demand. The costs associated with expanding fish farm production capabilities often prohibit producers from increasing levels of production and leave them continually seeking new technologies to meet this rising global demand."
Eiten added, "The implementation of the SARGO(TM) FINFARM technology holds the potential to transform the world food market by reducing production costs and providing an alternative for fish farmers looking to increase productivity, while lowering or stabilizing costs. Mariculture stands to have a great impact on the fish farming industry with its SARGO(TM) system and experience near- and long-term growth as the aquaculture industry adopts its patented closed-containment systems."

Here's an interesting little tidbit............
I had a really nice chat with Dave Meilahn this afternoon, and ended up with a potential invitation to do construction management and/or start-up of some systems down the road. Sounds like they are going to get real busy, real soon. Subsequently, I called one of my buddies in VA who is the Boss of a well-respected design-build consultancy.
They are long-time engineering friends and associates of mine on the East Coast that have all the right credentials and connections with Washington D.C., VA, MD, WV, NC and SC (..and Norway, etc..) to get a lot of these systems on order out that way - with government backing and support.
Everyone has now exchanged names, numbers and address info so the professional documentation, client lists and resumes will be following.

Hi C-man,
I'm definitely looking forward to some PR and contracts info on this one, I think it's got terrific potential for both aqua-farming and scientific applications - especially in the endangered species area..!!
They look like a great place to grow lobsters, shrimp, oysters, etc., with minor modifications (..like hanging plastic tubes..) for the oysters, etc., to latch on to.

Good for you, Chucka.........!!
Obviously it takes a little time to get processes and systems the size of the MCUL units up and cranking, so I presume we'll see some news in the next month or so.
I was watching a Discovery Channel program on the search for the Giant Squid ( Architeuthis ) off the coast of Autralia the other night. They finally caught several infants in a special new type of net. But, all six of them died enroute to the onshore laboratory. They are apparently very sensitive to temperature and environmental changes when they are fry.
http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/OCEAN_PLANET/HTML/squid_opening.html
The water temperature strata the fry like is usually not too deep, so it would be interesting if the MCUL growth pods could be used to raise them for scientific purposes; pumping the cool water up from the required depth - which would contain all their normal nutrients, etc. It would protect them, while leaving then "..in situ..".
I'll have to take notes and write an email or two, the next time I watch the program.
Why don't you call the MCUL folks and share the thought...?!?

INVESTMENT HIGHLIGHTS (back to top)
[] Pioneer in aquaculture industry offering distinctive technology with the power to redefine the global food market.
[] Potential to gain substantial market share as the aquaculture industry adopts closed wall containment systems as an environmentally-safe alternative to traditional pens.
[] Expected product lifespan in excess of 30 years - with each farm possible of producing 500 metric tons of fish annually - provides opportunity for consistently higher profit margins compared to conventional pens .
ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE ALTERNATIVE (back to top)
[]
The raceway current, water circulation and supply, and waste collection system of the closed-containment system eliminate environmental hazards to the surrounding areas and external fish population.
THE SARGOTM SYSTEM (back to top)
In the competitive fish farming industry, Mariculture's proprietary SARGO FINFARMS solid wall fish rearing system provides fish farmers with a host of advantages as compared to traditional net pen systems. This revolutionary fish pen offers substantial economic and environmental benefits by allowing greater control of the fish growing environment. The SARGO system allows for increased control from external elements and greater leverage of internal elements. Enclosed Fish Containment Reservoir The SARGO solid wall reservoir is structured from composite plastic or reinforced fiberglass that withstands sea elements and is resilient to corrosive marine organisms. The solid wall containment approach is implemented in Northern Europe through land-based systems. However, the prohibitive costs associated with land-based systems constrain most fish farmers in the United States from pursuing this technique.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS (back to top)
The SARGO FINFARM technology is revolutionizing the aquaculture industry by offering environmentally safe alternatives to fish farming. The farms are made up of a series of self-contained complex floating SARGO reservoirs and support facilities. The reservoir technology eliminates waste from polluting the surrounding waters by containing the waste in the conical bottom section of the reservoir. The solid wall structure also prevents the domesticated fish from escaping and competing with the native fish for food and habitat. Containing the domestic fish in the SARGO structure also negates the perceived concern of escaped fish breeding with native fish and contaminating genetic stocks. Fish farm permits have become increasingly difficult to obtain due in part to the visual impact on coastal areas. Given the high price of real estate associated with waterfront property, visual impairments such as fish farms are generally unacceptable. Consequently, remote areas like upper British Columbia, Canada and Chile have been scouted for new farm installation. However, SARGO FinFarms eliminate virtually all of these environmental concerns by requiring significantly less surface area as compared to net pens. SARGO's permitting process and associated site costs are far fewer enabling the Company to establish a new standard in aquaculture for environmental compatibility.
MULTIPLE TARGET MARKETS (back to top)
Marine Net Pen Fish Farm Replacement
Current users of net pens represent Mariculture's greatest customer base.
SARGO reservoirs can be configured for retrofit installation into existing net cage operations. Brood Stock Enhancement Farms
Marine farms with access to freshwater benefit from the system as the fish transition from freshwater to saltwater.
The SARGO system eliminates the stress associated with capture and transport, thus reducing the mortality rates. Freshwater Farms
Marine environment with freshwater can also use the SARGO system.
The circulation system creates artificial currents that closely duplicate a natural environment.
ECONOMIC IMPACT OF SARGOTM SYSTEM (back to top)
Produces Higher Product QualityHarvests fish with consistent firm flesh characteristics. Greater Return on Investment The net pen systems require replacement every three or four years, while the SARGO system has an expected lifespan in excess of 30 years. Raises Survival Rates With the SARGO system, survival rates consistently reach 95% or more.
Isolates Disease
The independent pen environment in the closed-containment system helps to keep diseases from spreading and infecting mass quantities of fish.
Eliminates Fish Loss
Eliminates fish loss from predators and escape, as opposed to open net systems which are very susceptible to loss from both predators and escape.
FUTURE OUTLOOK (back to top)
The implementation of SARGO technology holds the potential to transform the world food market and potentially avert a global food crisis by increasing the quantity and reliability of fish produced for sale. Utilization of the SARGO system translates to increased control of the growing habitat and productivity for the farm operators. Atlantic salmon imports were estimated at 345 million pounds in 2001. Projections for 2002 show that imports of salmon are expected to continue to grow - reaching close to 360 million pounds - estimated at $760 million in value, during 2002. Relatively strong demand for salmon products is expected to continue throughout 2002, particularly from the restaurant industry. The PBS documentary "Empty Oceans, Empty Nets" details the inverse relationship between fish supply from the world's oceans and the increased demand for fish from consumers. Producers may struggle to meet this increased demand due to the costs associated with expanding standard production capabilities. However, SARGO technology reduces production costs and is a viable alternative for fish farmers looking to increase productivity while lowering or keeping overhead costs constant. The reduction in operating costs, increase in product quality, and greater return on investment gained through implementation of the SARGO system results in the potential for near-and long-term return on capital.

Mariculture Systems, Inc. (OTC BB: MCUL)
BUSINESS SUMMARY
Mariculture Systems (OTC BB: MCUL) is a pioneer of fish farming technology. The Company's patented SARGOTM FINFARM is a closed-containment grow-out system that offers commercial fish farmers substantial advantages over traditional net pen systems. The technology offers significant production cost benefits by eliminating fish losses through predators and escape, shortening time to harvest, and allowing for higher stocking densities, all while virtually eliminating the environmental concerns associated with traditional net pens.
Mariculture's SARGO Finfarm System holds the potential to revolutionize the aquaculture industry by creating economies of scale, in turn reducing operating costs and decreasing the associated manpower and labor costs. The Company is poised to gain substantial market share with the introduction of the SARGO Finfarm system to the aquaculture market and is presently negotiating potential sales with companies in Asia, Central and South America, and Canada
BURGEONING INDUSTRY
Mariculture has the potential to penetrate an existing market of approximately 2,600 fish farms using traditional systems worldwide. The Company has the opportunity to realize additional revenues through the implementation of new fish farms in untapped regions and through long-term service contracts.
The market for seafood has become heavily concentrated in a small number of the most popular species and a larger proportion of seafood consumption is coming from overseas. The value of Atlantic salmon, farm-raised shrimp and tilapia imported to the United States during 2001 was about $400 million greater compared to the value of poultry the U.S. exported. While beef and poultry production is expected to slow and remain constant respectively, the seafood sector is expected to benefit from increased demand for seafood products. Popular culture continues to trend away from red meat for health reasons, while praising the benefits of fish. Seafood consumption averages about 33.5 pounds per person annually.

Last NEWS say support on this thing - not just me:: Not just this FISH big in a small pond:""..
EDMONDS, Wash., May 23, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Mariculture
Systems (OTC Bulletin Board: MCUL), a developer, manufacturer, and marketer of
proprietary closed-containment fish farm systems, today announced that it has
retained OTC Financial Network, a division of National Financial Communications
Corp., to direct its comprehensive investor relations campaign.
Mariculture is a pioneer in fish farming technology. Its SARGO(TM) FINFARMS
rearing system offers commercial farmers substantial advantages over traditional
net pen systems for the farming of virtually all types of finfish, including
Atlantic salmon. The Company's patented SARGO(TM) systems offer significant
production cost benefits by eliminating fish losses through predators and
escape, shortening time to harvest, and allowing for higher stocking densities,
all while virtually eliminating the environmental concerns associated with
traditional net pens. Mariculture successfully completed tests on a prototype
facility operated under a U.S. government permit in Puget Sound.
National Financial Communications President Geoffrey Eiten stated, "Mariculture
is carving a niche position in the aquaculture industry, as the Company
continues to develop its patented SARGO(TM) system and market it to a growing
commercial customer base. The SARGO(TM) technology provides Mariculture with
exciting prospects for future growth as the fish farming industry looks to adopt
closed-containment farming systems that are environmentally safe."
Mariculture Systems President David Meilahn stated, "As we begin trading on the
OTC Bulletin Board, our synergistic relationship with OTC Financial will help us
to disseminate our story to thousands of small-cap investors. OTC Financial will
design and implement a program to build the investment community's ongoing
interest in Mariculture."
About Mariculture Systems, Inc.
Mariculture Systems, Inc. develops, manufactures, and markets proprietary
closed-containment systems called SARGO(TM). The technology enables commercial
fish farmers to increase productivity and profits while reducing risks to their
crop and limiting environmental impact. The SARGO(TM) rearing systems is the
first to offer the industry unparalleled control of the fish growing
environment. The system is a floating farm facility that uses methods proven in
land-based systems and makes them work in the near-shore ocean and lake
locations. For more information visit: www.sargo.net.
