Rumor that Lu is in talks with Mot going around.
Anyone else hear anything on this?
Tia
Orvis
Yes - I did the same with GLW (Corning) when it was under 2 bucks. Plus LU is in MUCH better shape than GLW when I was buying it.
there isn't a doubt in my mind that we can't make it huge in the long term, next 5 years. Maybe not the best short term play, but great potential long term. Buy now and hold it for a few years.
Cramer comments -
Hype succeeds, short-term. It stinks long-term. That has to be the reason Lucent's (LU:NYSE - commentary - research) been so silent despite the unbelievable series of wins it has gotten in the last two months. First, Lucent won the Cingular business, a major new order. Then Nextel (NXTL:Nasdaq - commentary - research) announced a merge with Sprint (FON:NYSE - commentary - research), the latter being all Lucent, the former being no Lucent, and Sprint now will build out its network using more Lucent parts.
Yet the company is silent. The company never crows. The company just takes it all in. I think that's because Lucent CEO Patricia Russo saw it all happen during the good old days at Lucent, where Lucent constantly was bragging about orders that it hadn't nailed down yet and offering cheap financing to those who were doing the ordering. Russo knows that the story will have to be told by others now, not her. She can't be seen as hyping, given the lessons and the costs of hype from the previous regime.
In some ways, it is a shame. I think we would have a higher stock if Lucent were promotional. But in other ways, all that's happening is the stock's rise is delayed. Unless you have an appointment somewhere, you have to ask, "What's the hurry?" People have been emailing me, "I am down 50 cents on Lucent," to which I can only say, "Hold it; did I tell you to buy it all at once at the high? Was that really my directive?" Given that I preach, endlessly, that you shouldn't commit all your capital at one level, I can't even take these top-tickers seriously.
I always value second opinions. You in Lucent? Call Lehman Brothers. Get the reports by Steve Levy. He's been around. He knows the history. Read what he is saying. It confirms everything my sources are telling me.
And remember, sometimes it is not the velocity of the move that matters, it's the destination. You know where I think this one is heading.
I don't rely on those analyst pages anyway. They change their ideas like I change my underwear. Hopefully the news release next week will spark buying in Lucent. There's no way that the company will not be profitable. They've had 3 consecutive profitable quarters and have been garnering more business than ever. Once Iraq is stable, Lu will be the leader in getting that country spun up on communication technology.
I like Lucent long term but I might trade short at 8 or 9 even though I think this stock will be back at 30 in a few years.
waiting patiently here as well. I hate that there was an article on the yahoo lucent page saying it was a stock to avoid for 2005.
I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that that wall street doesn't trust lucent due to past accounting practices. We need something to happen soon though.
New contracts left and right, consecutive profitable quarters, all good news and still the stock doesn't move. I dont think the O/S is that bad. There are many big companies with the same O/S and are doing much better.
Maybe with the release of next quarters earnings, the stock will rise some.
lucent is very diluted, they need to decrease the float before we see some real gains, fingers crossed
Just saw the news that Lu will get almost $900M in back tax refunds. WOW!! I wish I had a refund like that.
This should double LU's income for the year and really affect the PPS.
If this doesn't catapult the stock into new highs, then I don't know what will.
Let's hope so. What I don't understand is with the millions of dollars awarded in contracts and all the positive news coming out, why this stock doesn't move? It has been dragging bottom for 2 years now. I am getting really frustrated with it.
that is a bold statement my friend, I sure hope so, but don't count on it. I would love to see 5 though
LU hits 3.71!
I still think $7-8 by the end of January is possible. Go LU!
Most of the people that post on Ihub trade penny and sub-penny stocks.
But I appreciate you posting here.
Please continue to do so.
Have fun,
Phil
Does anyone ever post here? Currently LU is a great daytrading stock. 5-10 cent swings can add up really fast if you play it right.
I don't think it will reach $60 any time soon. There are too many shares of LU for it to do so. I do think that somewhere between 6-8 is a possibility over the next 6 mos.
I wish, but dilution is a real bitch
Yea, but for some reason, this stock just doesn't move anymore. They've been releasing good news for a few qtrs now and no movement.
Great news today and only up .10
Does anyone think this stock will reach $60 again?
Well... it looks as though LU will finally break out. They posted a profit and were above analyst estimates. I am thrilled
My hunch is that the next earnings report and the elections will help LU. I have 3000 shares and will be holding that until at least January.
I hope so as well. I got in at 4.29, it went up to 5 and has been down ever since.
I seriously think we will see between $7-$8 by the end of January. The next earnings report should be a good one. Analysts are predicting .04 per share and I think LU will double or more. Hopefully with that news, it will t ake off and break $4.
I think it's because the entire industry is doing horrible. If you compare it to Nortel it's riding the same wave. Lucent just recently started reporting profitable quarters so they have been losing money the past few years.
I thought this stock was a bargain 5 years ago at $20, then 15 then 10 then 5 and now it's at 3. At one time it was around .80 and I was cursing the day I heard about Lucent. However, I think it's ready to recover. It's still the most active stock on the Nasdaq and should make a run pretty soon. I'm looking for 10-15 within a year.
One good thing is that Lu got contracts awarded in Iraq and has been very active at getting multi million dollar contracts. It won't be long before this stock goes back up to where it was. I don't expect 60 or even 40 any time soon, but 10 is very reasonable within a year.
If LU drops to under $3.00, I am going to load up on another 2500 shares. This stock is so undervalued, its not even funny.
Anybody have an opinion as to why the share price has dropped so much recently?
Yep. The fact that it was once $60 is a good point. The telecom sector has not had its recovery yet. When will it happen? Who knows...
I have a good friend who swears that the recovery will happen in 2005 or 2006. He is actually the one whos advice I followed when getting in on LU. A 5% gain over 1 months time isn't too bad either. If what he believes actually happens, people who get in now are lucky and may have a shot at early retirement.
Hmm... I have 2600 shares...* $60. That would be enough to buy a house in many states.
I personally will be looking to take a profit come January.... If it were to hit $10 I would be VERY happy. We'll have to wait and see.
I agree, the news just keeps on coming. The only downside to LU is that they are a horribly managed company. However, this used to be a $60 at one time. They have turned profitable quarters in a row and I think $5 by years end is very realistic.
I'm looking for $10 and then I'm out for good unless something can persuade me to stay in. I'm not impatient and will hold on to this stock until I get the price I want. One thing is almost certain...Unless Lucent has some kind of illegal activity going on, this company isn't going anywhere for a while.
Hello everyone.
I am new to this board. I recently snatched up 2600 shares of LU at 3.13 and really believe that there will be a steady uptrend over the next 5 months. There is too much good news coming from the company and I believe the share price is WAY undervalued.
This is going out on a limb but I believe it is possible we could see $8 per share by the end of January. One way or another, I think we will see over $5 by years end.
LU is all about the love
Man, the news has just kept on coming. Hopefully it will turn into a higher pps soon.
Nice contract just awarded today for
$100M
IP,
Hard to say.
Depends on the earnings reports I would guess.
Have fun,
Phil
This stock is very frustrating. Anyone have a clue as to where it will be by the end of the year?
I hope you're right. It is taking forever. This stock is the most active but doesn't go anywhere but down. It's ridiculous. If it ever hit's 10, I'm out for good.
have faith, it will be moving north eventually. Burned isn't the word
I think the news for Lucent has been excellent the past few quarters. I don't understand why the stock isn't moving. This stock has really burned me big time. I hope to see over $10 in the near future.
not a bad report, going in the right direction for sure. Would have liked to see a bigger jump though
What do you guys think the bottom will be for lucent? Have we hit it yet? Do you guys think it will get lower this week? I am looking for a new entry point to increase my position
Anyone reading the charts of Lucent? How low do you think it will go?
Thanks arkie
smpathy4,
Didn't LU win such contracts while the stock was going from $80 to $3?
Good news! $150 million dollar contract.
True Mikey but contracts does not necessarly mean net earnings.
many contracts have come, so will revenues, be patient my friend. By the end of the year we should see some nice gains.
If you haven't sold yet get busy. This LUser is just that. From 80 dollars to under 3 speaks for itself. The time is now to sell.

Uzbek Telecom Selects Lucent Technologies and Marubeni Corporation To Deploy a Wireless Voice and Data Network in Uzbekistan
Monday March 22, 6:00 am ET
BUKHARA, Uzbekistan, March 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) today announced that Uzbek Telecom, the national telecommunications service provider of Uzbekistan, has selected Lucent and Marubeni Corporation -- a leading Japanese trading house -- to deploy an advanced wireless network to provide voice and high-speed data services throughout the Western part of the Uzbek Republic. The agreement -- the first customer contract in Uzbekistan for Lucent -- was established through the Communications and Information Agency of Uzbekistan (CIAUz).
Under a subcontracting agreement with Marubeni, Lucent will supply Uzbekistan with equipment and services to deploy and maintain a wireless local loop (WLL) network based on Lucent's CDMA2000 1X (IMT-MC) solution for the 450 MHz spectrum band, known as CDMA450. The network will provide access to high- quality voice and high-speed data services at speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second to subscribers that, in many cases, lack basic communications services. Wireless technology from Lucent will be used by CIAUz to help overcome the digital divide between urban and rural areas in Uzbekistan.
"We are proud to launch this project, which will enable us to roll out a next-generation communication network that will offer advanced services throughout the region of Western Uzbekistan, in many cases for the first time," said Agzam Fakhriddinovich Izbosarov, Project Director and Deputy General Director of CIAUz. "We believe that Marubeni's expertise as contractor and Lucent's innovative solutions and services will ensure the success of the project."
Under the agreement, Lucent will deploy its Flexent® Modular Cell CDMA2000 base stations to provide coverage in the Karakalpakstan, Khorezm, Navoi and Bukhara areas. Lucent will also supply its 5ESS® based Wireless Switching Center, which will be located in Bukhara and will support wireless subscribers and provide interconnection to UzbekTelecom's PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). Lucent Worldwide Services will provide installation and engineering services for the deployment.
"The Lucent solution will not only satisfy a need for voice services in the Western regions of Uzbekistan, but also will provide Internet access and high-speed data capabilities to the population in distant locations," said Cindy Christy, president of Lucent Technologies' Mobility Solutions Group. "This project will supply schools, hospitals, businesses and local authorities in many parts of the country with world class telecommunications services."
CDMA2000 is an advanced and efficient wireless technology being introduced worldwide and internationally recognized third-generation (3G) standard established by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group is a leading global provider of mobile networking technologies, having deployed more than 90,000 spread-spectrum base stations for mobile operators worldwide, of which 50,000 are already supporting 3G services.
Upgrade:
Schwab SoundView upgraded Lucent Technologies (LU: news, chart, profile) to outperform from neutral, citing improving fundamentals in its optical and wireless businesses. It expects the networker's shortcomings in Europe and in its voice-over-Internet protocol business has already been priced into the stock.
AV,
I really don't have a price target in mind.
One thing for certain though, the telecom sector is not going away anytime soon.
I heard today that LU was a big supplier in India.
I know we are losing a lot of call center jobs to India, but our factories are producing equipment for them.
Win some, lose some.
Have fun,
Phil
