There's a shortage of houses to sell and a shortage of builders.
Interest rates are higher but still extremely low. When I got a VA loan to buy my first house in 1995 it was over 8%. later I was able to refinance at 6%. Fortunately I did manage to pay it off a few years early but not much.

I like this program, however they have had college and trade school re-imburesment programs already. So this is just a publicity headline for investors. From my knowledge moral is picking up in all the local stores around me and management is working on the bottom line. Lowe's is trying to steal market shares with their slogan "we can't be beat". This is definitely going to hurt the bottom line but will pan out later down the road. Plus Lowe's had bought a lot since the interest rates where low. What for these investments to pay 10 fold.

Whats your opinion of the program Lowe's has started to help their employees, by offering financial support to put them through construction related courses and training?
Lowe's intent was to attract employees that would be interested in home improvement and then help to build up the construction industries manpower shortage.
Good employee participation in the program will decide its future success. Time will tell but I think its a good idea that could help Lowe,s. Hopefully this will help improve employee morale by giving them a possible career path to a better future for themselves.
I think that as more employees take advantage of the program that they will become more interested in helping customers with their projects. Of course it will also help Lowe's and any industry related to the housing shortage situation, not to mention the economy.
I know it won't happen over night and that it won,t solve all of their problems, but it's a start.
I was already all in, I can live with it, even if it goes lower I'll make money this summer.
Here is the problem with retail! Too many jobs and nobody wants to work. Bottom feeders tend to go to the bottom. Trump is not an expert nor am I but if we want to fix this society then give them a reason. Make everyone re-apply for ssi or pick up trash. This should be a job for minimum wage. Instead we have too many jobs for unqualified people. This is going to be the downfall of our society! Mark my words!

I agree with you buyit, I really liked seeing Lowe's get Craftsman.
Craftsman is a catalyst. Also those numbers from last quarter reflect pay outs to buy Craftsman and renovate some stores. However, it should pay off by Dec imho.

Hi I-Man, I guess I made a bigger deal of every thing than I should have and for that I apologize.
But not all changes in our country have been bad. Thanking someone for their service wasn't something that I had ever heard of or even crossed my mind until some time after 911.
During my stent in the military there were several anti military groups in the U.S. Just before I retired in 1995 one such group managed to sneak on base and vandalize one of our F-15s. They pounded on it with hammers doing a great deal of damage and then dumped red paint on it, then spray painted the words baby killer on it. The young airman who was the crew chief on that airplane had some pretty mixed emotions about it.
It wasn't that long ago that "World War II" Veterans were recognized with their own memorial in Washington D.C. I have to admit I just assumed that there was one. I was shocked when it was announced that one was being built.
I never did thank my Dad or any of my uncles for their service to our country, they were all WWII Vets. they are all gone now. I don't regret not thanking them because they knew that I admired and respected them.
I now thank all my fellow Veterans when I meet them (both young and old). I have never thanked my cousins, we just have a mutual respect for each other.

Yes Volle. When we used them during off duty laborers back in 1998 time, they were paid standard Davis Bacon wage then which was 14.00/hour I believe it was- much more than their normal military pay, so we had many Air Force guys who signed up to do this for us..
And a news report this morning shows, today, able bodied men between 18-35, that less than 30% can even qualify for physical entrance requirements to military today too... Boy the country has changed, not for the good IMHO...

I hope that all of our soldiers on the front lines in harms way are especially certain that they are doing the job that they want to do.

I think that with most people who join the military its more than just a job.
I think that most military people feel more of a purpose in their job and camaraderie with their fellow workers than their civilian counterparts.
Military people have to be certain that they are doing the job that they want to do because:
-They are paid less than their civilian counterparts.
-They don't get paid for over time, there's a lot of over time.
-They can't say that's not my job.
-They are on call 24/7, soldiers on the front line are 24/7.
-They Have to be away from their families several times a year, or years.
-They have to constantly meet and demonstrate physical fitness standards.
-They have to make it through "Basic Training".
-They have stricter dress and grooming requirements.
-They have stricter behavior requirements, if they get into a fight down town, once the local police are done with them its their commanders turn to punish.
-Several jobs have several annual proficiency tests.
-They have to constantly get shots, their shot records are several pages long.
-They can't just quit and walk away.
I appreciate your thanks I-Man.
When ever someone thanks me for my service I can't help wondering how many more deserving veterans (past and present) were never thanked.

My most enjoyable experience ever working was for a government contracting firm in Colorado Springs circa 1998 where we did all sorts of projects at various Air Force properties as well as Ft Carson Army base. Best guys to ever work with, because they were focussed and disciplined- NOT like to general public type individuals out there.
I got a name from one Air Force Fireman "crack baby" which we all laughed at. We used off duty Air Force personnel as additional laborers then. It was from doing a project within NORAD then, cutting drywall for electrical work, and the dust covered me and hence the nickname came from that.. LOL

The North Carolina-headquartered company said it expects to book additional net tax expenses of roughly $75 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2017 due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. This charge, coupled with the forthcoming bonus payouts, is expected to reduce fourth-quarter earnings by about 14 cents a share, Lowe's said.
Lowe's added it will "continue to make investments to better meet the needs of customers and its employees."
