Jacobs Engineering focuses on providing a broad range of technical, professional and construction services to a large number of industrial, commercial and governmental clients worldwide. The company offers project services; consulting services; operations and maintenance services; and construction services via offices primarily in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. In FY 06 (Sep.), revenues by sector were: chemicals, 15%; buildings, 5%; national government (environmental, defense and NASA), 17%; PharmaBio (pharmaceutical and biotech), 9%; petroleum (oil and gas and refining), 38%; infrastructure, 8%; technology, 2%; pulp and paper, 1%; and other 5%. Technical professional services accounted for 45% of revenues, with the balance derived from field services. At December 31, 2006, total backlog was $10.4 billion (53% from technical professional services), up nearly 16% from $9.0 billion a year earlier, reflecting new awards for federal and petroleum projects. JEC expects to ramp up backlog in FY 07 (Sep.), but believes quarterly backlog could be uneven. We think this is normal for E&C companies, and, in our view, projections should be based on full fiscal year comparisons. The company expects about 65% of its backlog to be realized as revenues within the next fiscal year. Project services include the engineering and design of process plants and high-technology facilities. Construction services offers traditional field services to private and public sector clients. Process, scientific and systems consulting includes market analyses to determine the feasibility of a project. Operations and maintenance services include all tasks required to keep a process plant in day-to-day operation. In FY 06, revenues derived from agencies of the U.S. government accounted for 16.4% of the total, down from over 21% in FY 05. JEC sees total federal contracts (40%) gradually rising to 50% of its business. Revenues from operations outside of the U.S. accounted for 35% of the total in FY 06, down from 34% in FY 05, with Europe providing 23% of FY 06 total company revenues. In FY 06, Valero Energy Corp. accounted for in excess of 10% of JEC's total revenues. In FY 06, stock option expense was $0.08 a share (adjusted for a 2-for-1 split in March 2007).
