After researching approximately 15 top brokerages the consensus is a definite "sell". I cannot afford to do that at this time. Basically ever street I went down was grim and I am a long.
Move over, I understand misery loves company, so here I am.
Max
Man, this is when I need community. Any honest commentary about the outlook appreciated.
My main concern is that additional debt may weaken rather than strengthen our position. It seems that JDSU may be following the economic precedence of the people that allow plastic to rule. I can understand extending yourself financially to a point but it seems that this is a bit drastic IMO. I hope that it pays off for them. I certainly have a lot riding on it.
BTW are you still accumulating after the acquisition or just holding?
TIA
Max
max, JDSU is being agressive. It could pay off
or it could come back and haunt them. If JDSU ends up selling this company in 2004 or beyond due to a sluggish sector, it will hurt.
It seems JDSU is betting on a sector recovery soon. The jury is still out on that. However, JDSU is well postioned to do some serious moving when it does come back.
Personally, I am very concerned obout the huge deficit the US has created. It is going to hurt, if not us, then our children.
A couple weeks ago we were heading to $5.00 and no one really knew why. We are now heading to $3.00 and I am not sure I know why. It is a mad, mad , mad, mad world...
GOOD FORTUNE TO ALL!
I think the acquisition will better position them to lead the charge once the sector begins to recover. As you know, their sector has been beaten into the ground over and over again. I doubt that we'll see big changes this year, but hopefully by 04, things will have improved greatly. Good luck and stay the course.
Buell
I too previously owned this stock and did very well. Sold at $119 a couple of years back. I feel that the market is underestimating the potential of this company. I think once we reach $5.00 we will see fund managers and instiutions knocking on the door. My question is how long can we afford to sit idle? Will this new acquisition be beneficial in the near future? Any thoughts? I had stock in one company that went inot BK and is still trying to come back due to bad management and poor acquistions.
TIA
Max
Max
I got in when it was 50, rode it to 300 twice where it split, recouped my investment, made a little money, then rode it all the way down.
They still have almost a billion in cash reserves. I feel like the reason they are so low is due to the semiconductor and tech stock conditions overall.
But I still feel like they will once again be the 800lb gorilla in the FO and semiconductor area. I dont know if we'll ever see 300 again, but I can dream. I'm long and will stay that way.
Jimmy
Do you think the acquistion is what has slammed us today. This is not my are of expertise and I am not certain if this is a good strategic move on the part of JDSU. I have seen this happen with other sectors that I am familiar with, healthcare and biotech, and it is not always a good move.
TIA

JDSU makes aquisition:
http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?site=lightreading&doc_id=37180
max, I think the downgrade is a sector thing. CAP spending is the
key.
It is my hope that the INTC good news will begin to raise some of the better FO networking commodites. I think this is a great company and will be one of the first to take off with a sector improvement.
Has anyone gotten any inside information on the earnings report next week? Are they coming closer to breaking even? One of their previous statement called for a 2004 second quarter goal to at least break even. That could drive it to double digits, IMHO. Of course, I may this could all be wishful thinking.
Any thoughts?
Any comments on the latest ratings on Barchart? BTW latest post on RB is complimenting them for doing such a great job and getting back to normal. I must be crazier than I thought because the board is worse than ever IMO.

Why is JDSU considered to be an underperform by so many analysts? I got back into JDSU at just a little over $3.00. I owned this company several years back and sold at $119 a share and I still feel this is an excellent long term investment but I am trying to understand why such a downgrade. Has there been major changes in this company to cause such a resistance?
I hope to see double digits at least by Q2. Any opinions?
TIA
Max
Hope to gain some inside knowledge on JDSU
I am looking for some serious, SPAM free posts. Hope this will be a good home.
I am here and looking for some knowledgeable exchanges since I can't get anything but spam on RB. Any thoughts about Q4?
TIA
Max
Goodbye spammers at Raging Bull, hello serious people about JDSU.
Results for Q4 will still not be rosy. Things are still nasty in San Jose for JDSU I'm afraid. But this is a strong company and there will be some money to be made here when the FO market turns around. When will that be you ask? Who knows, its a fickle game, but I would say at least another year.
Hello, iHub users.
Any predictions re: last quarter's results?
Finally headed in the right direction. After checking the latest report, we might eke
out a profit in the next quarter. Anyone concur ?
Watch for resistance at around 3.75-4.00. I don't believe there is a fundamental reason for breaking out over 4.00 right now.

JDS Sells Optic Unit at Rock-Bottom Price
August 01, 2002 04:15 PM ET Email this article Printer friendly version
By Susan Taylor
OTTAWA (Reuters) - JDS Uniphase Corp. JDU.TO JDSU.O will virtually give away technology it once considered critical in the rush toward next generation fiber-optic networks in a $8.5 million deal with France's MEMSCAP MEMS.LN announced on Thursday.
JDS, the world's largest supplier of components and modules that boost the speed and capacity of optical networks, will sell the Cronos MEMS business and assets it acquired for $565 million two years ago.
MEMSCAP will pay an additional 6.5 million shares, or $5.2 million, if the unit reaches unspecified revenue targets over a 2.5 year period.
MEMS, or micro-electromechanical devices, is technology based on tiny silicon structures that can be controlled to switch, add, direct and control light as it travels through fiber-optic networks.
It is used in small, high-capacity switches and was expected to play a key role in all-optical "megaswitches."
But phone companies' sinking sales has dampened demand for new tools that move data further and faster.
"We could see a two- to three-year lag here before any of these new technologies work their way into the market," said Max Schuetz, an analyst at Credit Suisse First Boston.
Telecoms companies, hit by falling prices and a glut in capacity, are only buying equipment to make small additions to capacity, rather than advanced gear for new networks, he said.
"JDS decided, fairly wisely, that having 100 people and two semiconductor fabs (plants) down in North Carolina for three years before they really got a return on that investment probably wasn't the best they could do in the current market conditions," said Schuetz, who believes JDS fared well in the deal.
"If nothing else, it saves them. There are 100 people working there, so just based on average costs, laying them off and shutting down the facilities could have cost JDS $7 million or $8 million."
CHANGE IN DIRECTION FOR JDS
The sale marks a capitulation for JDS, which said MEMS technology formed a "key strategic resource" for its customers when it bought Cronos Integrated Microsystem Inc. as part of an intense acquisition spree.
The sale comes a week after JDS said it would cut more jobs and shutter plants as it reported a fourth-quarter loss of nearly $1 billion and warned sales would continue to erode.
Chief executive Jozef Straus told Reuters at the time that his company needed to make "bets about where the technology and where the market is going."
Schuetz said future product or unit sales may be more challenging. Amplification equipment sales may lag for the next two years, but those products would be hard to carve out from JDS's research and development and manufacturing, he added.
Under the Cronos deal, MEMSCAP will acquire the unit free of debt, other liabilities, working capital or cash balances, for 10.5 million common shares. A further 6.5 million shares will be issued if revenue targets are met.
Under the arrangement, MEMSCAP will be an exclusive supplier to JDS for MEMS chips and other MEMS products for at least three years. JDS said it has committed to initial purchases, but did not specify the volumes.
Grenoble-based MEMSCAP, whose shares jumped as much as 11 percent after the announcement, said the deal will be neutral or add slightly to 2002 earnings and make a "significant contribution" to earnings after 2002.
MEMSCAP acquires several contracts for the equipment, design and production services and a range of patented technology under the deal. The bulk of revenue likely stems from companies using the facility for contract manufacturing, said Schuetz.
Shares in MEMSCAP closed at 0.82 euros, a 4 percent gain. JDS stock lost 28 cents, or 11 percent, to end the session at $2.25 on Nasdaq and fell 26 Canadian cents to close at C$4.24 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

RESEARCH ALERT-JDS Uniphase cut to 'buy'
NEW YORK, May 29 (Reuters) - CS First Boston said on Wednesday it cut its rating on JDS Uniphase Corp. (Toronto:JDU.TO - News; NasdaqNM:JDSU - News) to "buy" from "strong buy" due to concerns that telephone companies will make limited equipment purchases due to market weakness and liquidity concerns.
"While we still believe JDSU's No. 1 market share position and clean balance sheet will allow it to emerge from the downturn as the premier optical component franchise, we believe that market risk is currently too high to justify our 'strong buy' rating," the firm said in a research report.
CSFB cut the price targe on the stock to $7 from $10.
It said it believes that existing spending its moving toward lower-content single-wavelength SONET/SDH systems and away from DWDM (dense wave division multiplexing) systems. Such a shift could reduce the near-term demand for optical components, the firm said.
CSFB cut its fiscal year 2002 sales forecast to $1.08 billion from $1.10 billion. For 2003, it cut its sales forecast to $960 million, down from $1.01 billion, and lowered its results forecast to a loss of 7 cents a share, from a loss of 6 cents a share.
Shares of JDS closed at $3.99 on Tuesday on Nasdaq.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. Virtually everyone who initiated long term positions on tech stocks from late '99 through the end of y2k is severely upside down. Unfortunately few appreciated how volatile these plays would be in the face of a recession. Fortunately, the best of these tech enterprises will appreciate disproportionately when the economy begins to recover.
Imo the trick is to examine your holdings and try to determine if they will still retain their competitive advantages when the recession ends.

I'm sure the analysts' have contacts in each of the companies they follow, but doubt they can get advanced copies of the earnings reports. The downgrade was probably based on an "informed" guess.
In the case of jdsu, the deck was stacked in favor of a bad report anyway. Their sector is in a world of hurt.

Sometimes I think they get those earnings reports before the public does. I think that's illegal.

JDS Uniphase signs development deal with Adept Tech
TORONTO, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Optical components maker JDS Uniphase Corp. (Toronto:JDU.TO - news) (NasdaqNM:JDSU - news) said on Tuesday it had inked a development alliance with Adept Technology (NasdaqNM:ADTK - news) Inc. to automate manufacturing processes and would make a $25 million investment in the maker of industrial robots.
JDS said the alliance extends a two year old development and supply relationship with Adept, and will give it the sole right to any fiber optic applications, new products and technologies created by the partnership.
Adept will have the right to sell products and technologies developed in the alliance that can be used in industries outside of fiber optics, while both companies are free to pursue development deals with other firms, said JDS in a statement.
The alliance, and JDS' investment in Adept' convertible preferred stock, is expected to close ``shortly'.

Did you see that chart on JDSU.

We may have to ask the BIG BAD MATT, for his technical on this one.
I think that their comment on having a clearer horizon make be a good sign for the company. My only concern, is it clearer up or down!
