ioneer Ltd.'s Rhyolite Ridge project in Nevada, USA is expected to be the first project globally to produce large quantities of both lithium and boron from the one operation. Everyday we hear about the use of lithium in electric vehicles but a lesser know fact is the importance of boron in the car industry. This article by Ford Motor Company sheds some light on that. "Boron Steel is an ultra-high-strength steel that Ford uses, along with low-alloy and dual-phase steels, to help protect you while still passing on fuel savings."

I moved my bid around today. I think I made the MMs mad. They gave me a small amount to stop me from moving around. I deserved it.

I watched them on Vulcan Energy give a dude 1 share the next day 9 shares. I try not to move my bid to often. I am one of the few that trade Vulcan on the US side. People get mad and sell into me.

I stay invested to keep an eye on their top scientist. Dr. Harrison.

I love the 2-for-1 elements on this one. And being in the USA another great advantage. The only play I have in the USA for lithium. Gave up on the clays 18 months ago.

Most companies never get this far one permit to go I belive.

What were the main findings of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) completed in 2020?
The DFS concluded that we would develop an open pit mine operation. We have a hard rock deposit, and we will use conventional mining methods to extract the rock. That rock will be processed on-site to extract the lithium and boron from it. Then, these will be refined and processed to make the end-product lithium chemicals at the site, which is very unique among hard-rock operations around the world. The DFS also confirmed our ability to produce approximately 22,000 mt/y of lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide, and 174,000 mt/y of boric acid for 26 years.

Congratulations to Syrah Resources Ltd on the US$107 million loan under the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) DOE Loan Programs Office (LPO).
ioneer Ltd. commenced the LPO process in Q1 2021 and was invited into due diligence in Dec 2021. Due diligence is currently in progress and if successful, the loan will support the US$490 million strategic investment by Sibanye-Stillwater to fund development of the Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron project in Nevada.

ioneer’s drill results reveal further high-grade lithium and boron at Rhyolite Ridge

ioneer Ltd (ASX:INR) has revealed further encouraging drilling results from its Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project in Nevada, USA.

A 45-hole (9,000 metre) drilling program completed in late January was designed to increase the confidence of the ore reserve by infill drilling of the planned starter pit and to test for southern extensions of mineralisation outside of the current ore reserve.

Results received for the first 17 holes are highly encouraging with lithium and boron grades consistently higher than the ore reserve grades.

Initial assays have been received from the first nine holes showing:

Higher boron grades (circa 30%) than currently modelled for the area planned to be mined during the first few years; and
Extension to the south of shallow, high-grade lithium-boron mineralisation.
The Company released its Rhyolite Ridge Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) on 23 October 2018. The PFS included a two-stage mine development – a starter pit covering the first seven years and an expanded pit covering a mine life of over 30 years.

A maiden Ore Reserve has been estimated for the first stage of mine development:

15.8 million tonnes at 1,900ppm lithium (equivalent to 1.0% lithium carbonate) and 12,200ppm boron (equivalent to 7.0% boric acid).
Containing the equivalent of 160,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate and 1.1 million tonnes of boric acid.
The Indicated Mineral Resource comprises 950,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate and 7.5 million tonnes of boric acid (inclusive of the Ore Reserve).

Sibanye-Stillwater Limited is pleased to announce that it has reached agreement with ioneer Limited (ioneer) to establish a joint venture with respect to the Rhyolite Ridge Lithium-Boron Project (Joint Venture). Following the satisfaction of all conditions precedent as detailed in Transaction Details, in paragraph 4 below, Sibanye-Stillwater will contribute US$490 million for a 50% interest in the Joint Venture, with ioneer maintaining a 50% interest and retaining the operational management responsibility for the Joint Venture.

In addition, Sibanye-Stillwater has agreed to subscribe for a strategic placement of new ordinary shares in ioneer equal to 7.1% of ioneer’s ordinary share capital post placement, for approximately US$70 million.

They are ioneer's partner. And I keep neglecting to research them at depth.

Lithium (chemical symbol ‘Li’) is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. Its density is about half that of water, making it the least dense of the solid elements. In other words, under standard conditions, it is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. It gets its name from “lithos,” the Greek word for stone, because it is present in trace amounts in virtually all igneous rock and also in mineral springs.

Commercial applications
Lithium and its compounds have been used in a variety of commercial applications since the 1920s. Aside from it use, historically, as a mood-stabilising medication, they have been used in the manufacture of high-temperature lubricants, high strength-to-weight alloys heat-resistant glass and ceramics and, in the form of lithium hydroxide, as a means of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere of spacecraft.

Its more recent applications have been in the manufacture of batteries. The energy-to-weight-ratio of Li-ion batteries, their ability to be recharged many times over, and slow loss of charge when not in use have led three industry groups in particular – electric vehicles (‘EVs’), consumer electronics and the energy sector – to promote research and development into this battery technology.

Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) is a chemical that is needed in the production of the cathode active material in modern high-nickel cathode materials, which provide higher energy density. Lithium hydroxide is expected to become the dominant lithium chemical consumed in battery applications.

The growing demand for hybrids, rechargeable hybrids and electric vehicles strongly increases the demand for lithium. Lithium demand is predicted to grow to 900,000 lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) tonnes by 2027, and to almost 2.8 million LCE tonnes by 2040.

U.S. lithium miners' shares charge up on likely Biden EV order

"By invoking the Defense Production Act, the Biden administration would presumably be signaling somewhat of a carte blanche endorsement for the domestic EV and battery materials sector," said Christopher Kapsch, senior equity research analyst at Loop Capital.

The order could be invoked as soon as this week, but it was not immediately clear how much funding could be allocated, according to the report.

Kapsch believes the order would likely be a bigger benefit for early-stage lithium miners that have U.S. operations - including Piedmont Lithium Inc (PLL.O), ioneer (INR.AX), Lithium Americas Corp (LAC.TO) and Standard Lithium (SLI.V) - as Biden's order could speed up their production timelines or cut capital costs.

From WSJ: "The administration would include minerals like lithium, nickel and graphite, cobalt and manganese under the Korean War-era national security mobilization law, the people said. The designation could help mining companies access government funding for feasibility studies on mining development, productivity and safety improvements, or on how to wring more of these metals out of ore already produced at facilities operating in the U.S. It could also prompt Congress to dedicate more money to such efforts, the people said".

"The Defense Production Act would likely be more of a help to early-stage companies, said James D. Calaway, the executive chairman of the Australian company Ioneer Ltd. that is because the permitting process for mining projects often takes 10 years, more than three times as long as some other countries, according to the National Mining Association.

Mr. Calaway’s company is trying to develop a $1 billion lithium mine and processing plant in Nevada. It has spent a year working through the federal permitting process, which has been delayed over what the project would mean for a protected wildflower on the proposed site.

“The specifics, I say, so far, they’re encouraging, but they would not have such a significant impact on an advanced project like ours,” Mr. Calaway said of Mr. Biden’s consideration of the Defense Production Act. “It shines a bright light on the problem, which is that we desperately need to pick up the pace.”

Granholm told conference attendees she would work to streamline permitting for new sources of EV minerals, eliciting loud applause.

"It takes forever to get a new permit. How crazy is that?" said Granholm.

Granholm's department has already received applications for $2 billion in loans to fund U.S. strategic minerals projects from Lithium Americas Corp (LAC.TO), ioneer (INR.AX), Piedmont Lithium Inc (PLL.O) and others.

The department is also proactively contacting junior miners to discuss potential loans.

"The goal here is to make sure that people know that it's not a lack of capital that's holding back the development of these assets in the United States," said Jigar Shah, head of the Energy Department's Loan Programs Office. "

While the loan office is reviewing loan applications from some lithium projects that have faced opposition, funds will not be distributed to proposed mines that have not passed full regulatory review

emerging lithium–boron supplier, today announced the completion of a Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) between Ioneer USA Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of
ioneer, and NexTech Batteries (NexTech), the global leader in proprietary lithium-sulphur

Under the terms of the MOU, the two companies have expressed mutual interest in the
acquisition of lithium carbonate and/or lithium hydroxide supply from ioneer’s Rhyolite Ridge
Lithium-Boron Project for NexTech’s production facility in Carson City, which will be used to
manufacture next generation solid-state batteries poised to revolutionise the automotive
industry, renewable energy and grid storage applications, portable electronics,
drones/eVTOL aircraft and more. ioneer aims to produce upwards of 22,000 tonnes of
lithium materials per year in nearby Esmeralda County. The two parties intend to discuss the
potential for long-term supply to NexTech once production has commenced.

Development Authority (NNDA), the state-designated Regional Development authority for
the Sierra Region of Nevada which includes Carson City.
