International Rectifier Corporation: Company Report
International Rectifier (IR) sets electricity on the right path. The company is a major manufacturer of power semiconductors, which refine the electricity flowing into a device from a battery or a power grid, thus enabling more efficient operation. IR's products -- including MOSFETs (metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors), diodes, and rectifiers -- are used in consumer appliances, automobiles, computers, communication devices, lighting, and military applications. Top customers include Alcatel, Boeing, Robert Bosch, Lucent, Mitsubishi, Philips, Siemens, and Sony. More than three-fifths of IR's sales are to customers outside the US.
In spite of all the negative semi equipment comments coming from Wall Street, I for one think it's now time to start buying into this sector. Companies such as Amat aren't going to fade away. There is going to be a lot of money made when this market turns around.

North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry Posts June 2002 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 1.28
SAN JOSE, Calif., July 19, 2002 -- The North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted $1.16 billion in orders in June 2002 (three-month average basis) and a book-to-bill ratio of 1.28, according to the June 2002 Express Report published today by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). A book-to-bill of 1.28 means that $128 worth of new orders were received for every $100 of product billed for the month.
The three-month average of worldwide bookings in June 2002 was $1.16 billion. The bookings figure is five percent above the revised May 2002 level of $1.11 billion and 59 percent above the $731 million in orders posted in June 2001.
The three-month average of worldwide billings in June 2002 was $906 million. The billings figure is four percent above the revised May 2002 level of $869.6 million and 33 percent below the June 2001 billings level of $1.36 billion.
"Amidst mixed signals about capital spending plans from global chip makers, the North American-based semiconductor equipment industry has posted several months of incremental billings growth," said Stanley Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. "While there are concerns about the strength of improvements this year, seven months of sequential bookings growth and our recent industry consensus survey support expectations for a market rebound in 2003 and 2004."
The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving average billings for the North American semiconductor equipment industry. Billings and bookings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.

I've known IR for more years than I can count. At one time I worked for a computer company and we purchased power rectifiers from IR. They are an "old line company" and will do well once the enterprise companies start spending again.
You need to consider IR as a long term investment. I would check a stock chart and determine a good entry point.
I don't own any shares in the company simply due to the fact that I'm fully invested and IR isn't in my portfolio. However, I have been giving thought to picking up the stock.

Thanks,I'm happy to hear of their conservative nature. And I will look around the home page. I read yesterday over at The Motely Fool a post from someone who loves the company name. "International Rectifier, it sounds so ....... dirty." It will be hard to top that as a reason to invest.
Think you'll find IRF's mgmt is quite conservative and that they will meet guidance. If you haven't already looked at it go to the IRF home page and look at their latest presentation. Super firm, IMO that is below much of the radar.
I just got my feet wet and bought a few shares of this one. If the company's guidance is correct then the stock apprears to be a good value. But it seems you can't trust company guidance much these days. Anybody else out there with some thoughts on this stock?
Fortunately for IRF, they are a solid company which continues to increase their product base. Unfortunately for the stock price, IRF is still subject to some of the volatility swings that the tech stocks go through. Keep in mind also that IRF only has 52 million shares in the float. This contributes to wide swings both up and down. Hang in there.
Byeohteque, I reinvested in IRF today. Do you have any theory on why the price has dropped so much recently? I've read through the board at Yahoo and the only thing which caught my eye was that there is a court case scheduled for tomorrow. I don't know what it's in reference to. Otherwise I am very comfortable with the company and its prospects.
Folks, IRF is now on iHUB. IRF specializes in energy and making it more efficient for a vast variety of products. Computers may change, networks may evolve, but one thing that all components will always need is energy. This is where IRF comes in.
I look forward to our discussions.
