.....and another 4% increase in P/S this AM.
Really scrooooed the pooch by not buying yesterday. Had the limit order typed in, but by the time I hit the Preview button it basically would have been a market order, and because of that, I changed it, lowering my price. That priced me out of the stock and out of the gains to be had overnight (and the dividend, I am pretty sure). Oh, well, IP, I will check back with you next quarter.
These boards are mostly for penny stocks. But I like to see if there is any chatter here on the blue chips in my dividend capture rotation. Monday this week was like last week although not as harsh. Both good opportunities for bottom fishing. (As they say, "Never sell on Monday.") I collected the premium on a cash covered put on IP while it was down, with a strike of 44, I think. That was a quick score with the option expiring at the end of the week. I might have done that again this Monday (with a strike this time of 43 or 43.50), except I am getting conflicting info on when the ex-div date is. Finance.yahoo and every broker I check says not May 28, but May 24, this Friday, so an option expiring that day would leave you out of collecting a dividend if you get stuck with the stock finishing the week under the strike price, leaving you to start next week as a proud owner of shares.
So, this week, looks like just buying it outright (particularly on Never-Sell-On Monday) was the way to go. Or even if you got it early Tuesday, still under 44 within the first hour, you could then have already sold it outright if you were pleased enough with your short-term gain (hopefully at least 50 cents a share, since that is the equivalent of a quarterly divvy). Or you could have sold a covered call expiring as soon as Friday on the nice positive open today before things turned south, maybe with a strike price of 45, or 44.50, if you wanted to lock more of your potential return into your premium (and have more protection against a retrace).
Ya, fri was a biy the dip. Seemed like a no reason drop. I just dont know the stock so I came on here to ask.
Well I did swing trade it for about .50 a share. I would have waited for ex div but my entry was shit and it gapped up for the sell down today
Oops, forgot what day of the week it was yesterday. It was a Never-Sell-On Monday, followed by a Turnaround Tuesday (so far); so much for getting IP quite so cheap today.
At 44.44, this thing pays 4.5%. Small consolation if you just lost over 4% today, but not bad for a stodgy blue chip. Looking to put in a crazy low bid for tomorrow around 43 and if I catch, I get a dividend within a week, yielding around 4.65% APY. I would sell another cash covered put, but, while press release says next week, broker site says XD is Friday.
Good, dip. Wondering why it dipped hard before ex div.
Why the drop pre ex div?
I'm holding all my stock and just collecting dividends! If this ever gets back up to $60.00 i might have to sell some.
IP ex-div is not until May 28? Hmm, I just needed it to not be today. Was calculating for some day next week; that is why I wrote a cash covered put that expires Friday (wrote that when we were down on Never-Sell-On Monday). Oh well, if it dips again, I can sell another for next Friday.
Yes, $0.50/share on common stock...............
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/international-paper-declares-dividend-200100164.html
MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 14, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- International Paper (IP) today declared a quarterly dividend of $0.50 per share for the period from April 1, 2019, to June 30, 2019, inclusive, on its common stock, par value $1.00. This dividend is payable on June 14, 2019, to holders of record at the close of business on May 28, 2019. Today the company also declared a regular quarterly dividend of $1.00 per share for the period from April 1, 2019, to June 30, 2019, inclusive, on the cumulative $4.00 preferred stock of the company. This dividend is also payable on June 14, 2019, to holders of record at the close of business on May 28, 2019.
Ex div date would be good to know, especially if it is the third Wednesday of this month and not next week, as that would impact value of options, particularly those expiring this Friday.
Re: Dividend..............
It should come around the week of the 20th of May.
Ugh. A "no news" downturn of over 5% this AM.
Anyone see anything on IP that I missed?
Must be earnings are not expected to be pretty.
HAY HAY WHATS UP IP!!!! is there another dividend coming????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Hi D, Re: IP buying history............
I added 12% more shares in early October at $43.20 and then again on Monday added some at $38.70 (another 12% more shares).
Currently my next buy target falls just under $35 should it get that far down. I'll give up some inventory if it rises to around $54.
Yield is good at 4.8%, P/E is amazing at under 6, Price/Book at around 2.3. I'm content to average down in price/share and average up in yield for now.
Yes, I've noticed we're hanging out in the same places.
AIM did you add another round here in the $30's yet? Looking at this area here as possible add.
Member marked you as well to follow, we seem to have some of the same dividend stocks in our portfolios.
Thanks for the Post,
Value Line gives IP a 3-5 year potential price target range of $90 to $135. They show the P/E to be 9.9 and on the low side for VL's median value. Dividend based upon today's price is around 4% and nobody's getting that in their money market fund right now.
Currently its book value per share is around 2 - not high or low. Value Line's "Timeliness" rank is #1, highest (for what that's worth). "Safety" ranking is average at #3. It carries a big load of debt, but I wasn't able to discern whether it is reasonable for this stock.
The price/share is approaching my next buy target at today's level. My initial purchase was in August, 2017 at just under $53. I sold 10% of the position at just over $62 and then reused that cash in March when the price dipped to under $51. While I'm enjoying the dividends overall the stock has underperformed for me. As long as the fundamentals are reasonably good I'll add shares in this decline. The dividend is eventually going to start supporting the price/share.
Another 2-3% discount and I'll add to the holding again.
International Paper Co (NYSE:IP) is a leading paper and packaging company with primary markets around the world. This stock peaked out in late January 2018 at $66.94 a share. Since that high pivot, the stock has been plunging and today it trades at $45.05 a share. This is a new 52-week low for the stock and many traders are now wondering where the bottom is for the paper products giant. The stock has now broken below its 200-week moving average which is a major negative sign for the shares. Traders must now look around the $41.00 area for the next important support level. This level is an important retrace level on the chart and a spot where the stock broke out in July 2016. Often, this combination will serve as an area that will be defended by the institutional money. Please note, the company will report earnings on October 25, 2018.

Hi Mick, Re: recent price activity...............
I managed to add 12% to my position with the recent weakness at just under $51 the other day. It's only a short time that I've owned IP and have had one sale at ~$62 and one buyback so far. The sale was to trim 10% of the position and this buyback replenished inventory with a little extra.
My starting price was $52.88 last August. So, exclusive of dividends, I'm about break-even with a few more shares and about the same initial cash in reserve.
