Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet : On Love
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then said Almitra, "Speak to us of Love."
And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:
When love beckons to you follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.
Like sheaves of corn he gathers you unto himself.
He threshes you to make you naked.
He sifts you to free you from your husks.
He grinds you to whiteness.
He kneads you until you are pliant;
And then he assigns you to his sacred fire, that you may become sacred bread for God's sacred feast.
All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.
But if in your fear you would seek only love's peace and love's pleasure,
Then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love's threshing-floor,
Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.
Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself.
Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;
For love is sufficient unto love.
When you love you should not say, "God is in my heart," but rather, I am in the heart of God."
And think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love's ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

An other Cup
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6641577
Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens, recently returned to the world of popular music with An Other Cup, his first secular studio album in 28 years. The disc contains old songs that were never recorded, songs he wrote in the last couple of years, and songs that he came up with on the spot, once he reached the studio.
Cat Stevens ranked among the top singer-songwriters of the '70s, with sensitive and optimistic music on albums like Tea for the Tillerman and songs like "Peace Train" and "Moonshadow." Affected by a near-death experience in the late '70s, Stevens became a Muslim and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. He didn't touch a guitar for many years, until two years ago, when his son brought a guitar into the house. After picking it up in the middle of the night and discovering that he could still play, he felt the spirituality in his playing that he said had been missing from his music back in 1978. This week, Yusuf Islam was awarded the Mediterranean Prize for Peace, as he continues to re-enter the spotlight as a musician.

♫ Sheva - Angels
http://www.garageband.com/song?|pe1|S8LTM0LdsaSkaFi1Y2o
"Sheva's voice combines raw emotion with an effortless delivery. Whats more impressive, she has the songwriting skills to match her considerable vocal talents. Check out Sheva in a small venue while you can". Jayson Baxter from Breakfast Television. Growing up in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia in a musical family, Sheva comes by her talent naturally. A classically trained mezzo-soprano and pianist, Sheva began exploring music at a young age and during her formative years she was able to express herself through musical theatre. While Sheva was attending university she got a gig fronting a house band. It wasn't long before she realized that although she loved performing, she also had a deep desire to sing and write her own music. Over the last few years, ideas were formulated, lyrics written, but it wasn't until last year that it all came together. "Basically I was living life, had a job as a hair stylist, and in a new relationship, but like so many, was frustrated with working 9 to 5 and not doing what I really wanted to do - pursue my musical career. I also realized that with a musical career comes spending time away from those that you love. It was during this time that I wrote "Song for Myself" which deals with these issues. I decided this is going to be my year the year I would concentrate on taking my music to the next level". And that's exactly what she did. Sheva has just finished recording her self-titled debut album, a blend of piano-driven pop, which will be released early 2006. The album was produced by Dale Penner (Holly McNarland, Nickelback, Matthew Good Band), and recorded in Vancouver Toronto, and Halifax. Contributing to the record were a host of talented, respected musicians from all across North America. This includes Boston based Jimmy Landry (guitars/programming), Vancouver based Don Powrie (drums), Bill Buckingham (string arrangements) and Los Angeles based Barry Coffing (strings and keyboard). Through her music, Sheva brings to her audience an element of deep emotion and intensity. She has the ability to capture her audience and draw them in with her captivating melodies and her pure angelic voice. Sheva has the range, power and control that translates both in the studio and in her live performance. Some of her early influences, Sarah McLachlan, and Peter Gabriel are evident in her music.

♫ Ali De Siati - Angels

What you will see: a guitar and a pretty girl with loooong hair. What you will hear: a remarkable voice that can soar like a songbird and then growl like mountain lion in incredibly honest and beautiful acoustic rock songs. Furiously talented! Joni Mitchell meets PJ Harvey. Her voice will push your eardrums back in the centre of your skull where they belong and will make hairs stand up in places you never knew you had them. Honest and beautiful acoustic rock songs. An incredible combination of energy and passion. Extremely hot blooded. PG 18.

♫ Better Off Dad - Angels
http://www.garageband.com/song?|pe1|S8LTM0LdsaSkZlC1ZG0
A little biographical song about the singer's great-grandmother. It was written and recorded sometime in 2004. My 14 year old daughter is singing it. (This is "Dad" writing, by the way). It's a home recording, and like most of ours, it has some problems, and like most of them, it was only made possible with the generous help of some talented internet friends. (Drums - John Wooten. Pedal steel - Tom Diemer; Bass - Tjarko Busink). It's a sad song, but the lady's had a kind of sad life. If it sounded real to you, then thanks...it was.
"Better Off Dad" is Jaimee Harris and her dad. We live outside of Waco, Texas...and we play live as an acoustic duo mostly in Dallas. Jaimee is 16 now. Dad is...older.
We began gigging on the weekends at various venues throughout Texas in late 2004, and we're having a lot of fun with it. We've recorded two full length CD's, and we're well into the 3rd.
She's my daughter, so I'm biased, but I think Jaimee has a lot of talent, and it's been a thrill to see her grow as a musician and an artist over the past couple of years. Most of our stuff is recorded as we write it (with much assistance from generous and talented musicians from various places around the internet). Our live shows consist of just the two of us with guitars, but I wanted to do more with the recordings.
More than anything, this project is an opportunity to spend time with my daughter, and to teach her what I know (good and bad) about music and about what's REALLY required for people who want to do it full-time. I haven't scared her off yet, but there's still time. We have a (live) video on the mp3 page of our website...It's over a year old, now probably...man, I wanna' do that again.

♫ Piper McKinnon - Angels
http://www.garageband.com/song?|pe1|S8LTM0LdsaSlaFiyZWo
Piper started playing and singing when she was young, but without any formal education in the music world she hadn't discovered she had real talent until her adult years. Her composing style has edge and melancholy as well as soul. You can hear the sorrow of the underground railway or the joy of being alive with child-like wonder in her words. Her voice brings to mind how Mona Lisa would sound were she a sound and not a painting. Listen, you'll see what this girl has to offer! ...and it'll make you feel good!
well, maybe not as tall, but the skin tone and eyes do to me.
you're cuckoo! that don't look like Cher! Hi, Hokie!

F A M I L Y
"I ran into a stranger as he passed by,
"Oh excuse me please" was my reply.
He said, "Please excuse me too;
I wasn't watching for you."
We were very polite, this stranger and I.
We went on our way and we said goodbye.
But at home a different story is told,
How we treat our loved ones, young and old.
Later that day, cooking the evening meal,
My son stood beside me very still.
When I turned, I nearly knocked him down.
"Move out of the way," I said with a frown.
He walked away, his little heart broken.
I didn't realize how harshly I'd spoken.
While I lay awake in bed,
God's still small voice came to me and said,
"While dealing with a stranger,
common courtesy you use,
but the family you love, you seem to abuse.
Go and look on the kitchen floor,
You'll find some flowers there by the door.
Those are the flowers he brought for you.
He picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.
He stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise,
you never saw the tears that filled his little eyes."
By this time, I felt very small,
And now my tears began to fall.
I quietly went and knelt by his bed;
"Wake up, little one, wake up," I said.
"Are these the flowers you picked for me?"
He smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.
I picked 'em because they're pretty like you.
I knew you'd like 'em, especially the blue."
I said, "Son, I'm very sorry for the way I acted today;
I shouldn't have yelled at you that way."
He said, "Oh, Mom, that's okay.
I love you anyway."
I said, "Son, I love you too,
and I do like the flowers, especially the blue."
FAMILY
Are you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company
that we are working for could easily replace us in
a matter of days.
But the family we left behind will feel the loss
for the rest of their lives.
And come to think of it, we pour ourselves more
into work than into our own family,
an unwise investment indeed,
don't you think?
So what is behind the story?
Do you know what the word FAMILY means?
FAMILY = (F)ATHER (A)ND (M)OTHER (I) (L)OVE (Y)OU"
