I got paid divs today from this.
Good luck. I think it goes down another 30%+ as soon as the dividend cut is officially announced. Remember, it has not been announced yet whet the next dividend will be.
I still think this will work it's way back up! How high i don't know!
I did, and divs buying more shares while Nat Gas prices in tank. -Out 40-50% ago depending on the day.
There will be no or little divs for approx 18 months.
More legal action around the corner, and so I thought many who were holding for divs would get out,,, as they did.
Do you own this for divs? This is not toast!
XTO - to pass on 80% of judgement to HGT. Likely no dividends for at least 18 months. 2 more suits in the wings. Most people own this for the divs. This thing is toast.

HGT has been said to benefit from the high gas and oil prices. What do you think?
I'm afraid I am unable to give you any advice regarding the selection of a brokerage. You might want to consult with an attorney or accountant who specializes in structuring trusts for families and individuals.
who should i go to, fidility, vanguard
Frankly, for advice of that nature, you would do well to consult with a professional financial advisor. I can explain how the dividends work for this issue, but, for anything serious, as you described, you need to see someone who does this for real.
by the way thank you for your help, maybe you can help me and point me out to the right direction?
is their away to invest COMPOUND TRUSTFUNDS, MEANING
trust fund one trust fund two into a savings account that accumalate income, i want to put maybe $10, 20k not sure.
also i want to beable to take money out if i need to is their an option like that?
Here's how to calculate what I think you're asking:
First, if you intend to invest $10,000 in HGT, you would buy units(shares). If you had bought at the closing price on Friday ($23.62 per unit), you divide $10,000 by $23.62 to determine the number of units you could buy with your money.
$10,000 / $23.62 = 423.37 units
but lets simplify it to keep the math simpler and call it 400 units with commissions and a little change back.
So now we need to find the monthly distribution, which will change a little bit from month to month, depending on the price of oil and the amount of oil actually pumped by the tenants.
The distribution for March was $0.113 per unit.
And so, to find the dollar amount of the distribution, we multiply $0.113 by the number of units.
400 * $0.113 = $45.20 in distribution payouts for your units for the month of March.
Next, to determine the annual rate of return, we multiply
$45.20 * 12 = $542.40 per year
(Now, since the distribution changes a little each month, it won't be exactly this amount, it might be a little higher or a little lower)
Finally, to determine the rate of return, we divide the payout by the initial investment:
$542.40 / $10,000 = .05424 = 5.424%
I hope this helps you with your question. If there is anything more you are still unsure about, please ask. I'm sure I or someone else will be able to help out.
hi how to calculate on $10,000 amount how much cash you get per month???
Hugoton is an Oil Production Royalty trust. The trust holds oil properties which others pay to drill and produce from, and the royalties are paid to the share holders. The size of the royalties per shareholder is determined by the price of oil (hence the royalty amount) and the amount of oil produced.
The percentage yield is determined by the market share price of the trust shares on the market versus the royalty payout.
Be aware that in any oil production royalty trust, there will eventually come a day when the oil runs out and the shareholders will own shares in non-producing land. Improved production techniques tend to push those dates further out than originally expected. Some royalty trusts also have set expiration terms and dates. Do your own due diligence before buying into any royalty trust to make sure you understand all terms and conditions of the trust.
HGT paying impressive dividends, thoughts?
That's kind of a shame. I have always been partial to PBT. Of course, I have always liked HGT as well.
Pretty neck in neck.
I still think PWE gets to $35 by end of August.
I still hold both PWE and HGT & SLB.
PBT brings up the rear.
Yes, PWE is still ahead of the pack. I moved my assets out of PWE a while back, as you know, in anticipation of the status change. Not sorry I did it.
The real question is whether there are some blocks of PWE playing chicken with the end-of-Year status shift, or has it settled out to its new configuration on the exchanges.
Overall, I still have a soft spot for PBT. It has been one of my favorites for years, and still seems to be a strong performer.
PWE beating both even though change in status coming.
In energy - good to have a some in a few spaces or in all three. Mishap can hurt one like pipeline problem - also deals being cut on a regular basis and so have a better chance on being in on one.
Looks like PBT has the lead right now, in the runup to the QE-II currency devaluation.
Looks like neck and neck right now.
I guess it depends a little bit on your time horizon. I have found, as a general rule, that stocks which swing by at least a 3% amplitude around the meancan be used to produce a fairly high ROI.
WIth a 3% swing, once a month, we have the math of:
(1.03^12)= 1.425
i.e. it will generate a 42.5% return on the year. Hard to match sitting and collecting divvies. The larger the divvies the trust produces, usually the larger the swing right before and right after the record date.
In more stable times, holding and collecting is prudent. In these times, in my opinion, holding for the long term is less certain.
If the general direction is up, and you buy monthly, the ones that swing a little bit can be great,,, as you are buying on the dips also. But as a rule I like 2 consistent ones and one that swings a little. Buy on dips when others with similar profile are still performing well.
It has been a while since I looked at San Juan. In plotting the three (PBT, HGT, SJT) it becomes apparent that PBT is calmer and more steady. HGT swings more vigorously, but, if you look at SJT, it has ben swingin even more widely.
In the current market, it has been my experience that swing trading on a fairly short cycle has worked well for me to generate returns.
I wish I had more. I remember back 2 months ago I saw something on PWE revalueing of the stock after the chinge on Jan 1,, and it said that if they became a corp it would be in in the $28-$32 range. Don't remember where it is, may be on Yahoo board news section if you go back to June. Going to look into it further before next quarter. The reason I held onto some.
IF risky on where ti goes,, then HGT SJT etc.
Thanks for the links. Given the uncertainties which even the articles illustrate, I think I'll stay with the couple of US trusts I have worked with for years. I have found it is sometimes advantageous with the US trusts to ignore to divvie altogether and just play the periodic swings which the market plus the divvie traders introduce. Many is the time I have gotten a couple of bucks swing out of PBT. Look at the chart, I'm sure you can see the basic timing popping right out at you.
It seems some will keep thier status.
'linked MLPs and royalty trusts that will maintain their beneficial tax status or have a minimum 10-12% tax rate.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Sluggish-Canadian-Energy-indie-2222173835.html?x=0&.v=1&.pf=loans&mod=pf-loans
http://www.tickerspy.com/newswire/?p=2036
We think alike.
After thinking about it, I am dividing my Oil royalty portion of the portfolio into PBT and HGT. Like we were discussing, I think I will hold off on the PWE and PGH until after they settle out a bit.
That is how i got into HGT. Took 50% of what I had in PWE and put into HGT thinking tax law changes. I have expected to see some of that "selling out of pwe" already. Little has shown considering how much US retirement money is in it for the dividends. There was some talk of a repricing the assets at taht time. This Repricing putting it at $28 PPS. Well see?!?!
I think that is why some still staying in. They are waiting to figure out exactly how it plays out.
IMO - In any case sector is good place to be. Mergers and aquisitions to come. Hard asets and dividends will be king if we reach stagflation. Good to hear from you.
<<The only thing about Canada is the change in tax law coming at the end of the year. it is my personal suspicion that many of the Canroys will be seeing a tough time ahead as folks gradually sell out now to avoid the perceived reduction in potential returns following the new year.
I have taken my profit and sold out of PWE and OGH just recently. I will revisit them after New Years. As for owning BOTH PBT and HGT, not a bad idea at all, in my opinion.>>

Over the last year PBT performed a good bit better, with HGT being more volitle. PBT more narrow in property holdings - Texas.
Those have been very predictable and profitable.
HGT partner with XTO on a variety of holdings, and a more expanded region,,,so if winds shift?
IMO - Last 2 years would have been better to be in PBT.
This dow not mean best for next 2 yrs. Nto bad to have a little in both. Add Canada too.
Any opinions as to whether HGT or PBT is the best US Oil Royalty to hold?
some folks are here, just not alot of excitement in this sector, right now.
