Where the buzz guys are ranked:
25. Montee Ball
114. Jeremy Hill
117. Justin Hunter
119. Jay Cutler
121. Terrance West
131. Rueben Randle
134. Andre Williams
147. Brandin Cooks
161. Markus Wheaton
163. Devonta Freeman
186. Lance Dunbar
206. Kenny Britt
Strategy: This is the section where we can really start to make some hay in ESPN. I’d consider literally every one of these guys under-ranked, except maybe Justin Hunter. … Rueben Randle and Brandin Cooks stick out as absolute robbery. Don’t be afraid to take them where you have them on your board, likely in the Round 7-10 range. … Another one that sticks out is Terrance West. The battle between Ben Tate and West is far, far closer than 32 vs. 121. Given these default ranks, I suspect I’ll end up with Tate in a lot of Yahoo spots and West in ESPN spots. … Jay Cutler will be my QB target in all ESPN leagues.
Strategy: I like Jimmy Graham as a first-round pick. But note that Jordan Cameron, Dennis Pitta, Kyle Rudolph, Jordan Reed, Zach Ertz and Ladarius Green won’t be appearing in our opponents’ draft applets until very, very late. Assuming most of our opponents aren’t aware of this, the obvious play is to wait on tight end. … We see similar things as I mentioned in the Yahoo section with Julio Jones and Jordy Nelson. This time, we can add Dez Bryant and Keenan Allen. … Toby Gerhart will be much more reasonably priced if you’re in an ESPN draft. I like him late-third or early-fourth.
Players listed lower overall than expected:
18. Dez Bryant
21. Julio Jones
22. Jordy Nelson
42. Keenan Allen
52. Toby Gerhart
79. Mike Wallace
96. Jordan Cameron
110. Dennis Pitta
138. Kyle Rudolph
146. Jordan Reed
Strategy: ESPN drafters need to be aware of the site’s reputation when it comes to rankings. They don’t get high on the buzz guys, base a lot on previous years and bet strongly on guys that have “done it.” Therefore, it’s going to be tough to sneak veterans you like through. … One glaring note from the ESPN ranks is that they’re really low on tight ends. More on that below. … There are a lot of rankings here that we just need to throw out and be thrilled that an opponent is going to take them too high. That includes Reggie Bush, Ray Rice, Danny Woodhead, Darren Sproles, Russell Wilson, Tre Mason, Donald Brown and Steve Smith. Read our blurbs if you’re wondering why. … Every owner has to know his own scoring system, but it would take a unique one to make Seattle D/ST worth an eighth-round pick.
Players listed higher overall than expected:
1. Adrian Peterson
5. Marshawn Lynch
9. Arian Foster
11. Doug Martin
13. Zac Stacy
23. Alfred Morris
29. Reggie Bush
32. Ben Tate
45. Cam Newton
54. Ray Rice
86. Danny Woodhead
87. Darren Sproles
91. Khiry Robinson
98. Seattle D/ST
99. Russell Wilson
103. Tre Mason
112. Donald Brown
113. Steve Smith
Strategy: Sometimes, we forget about players simply because we don’t seem them anywhere near the top of the applet. I like to use the queue to make sure I get these guys in there. … Ladarius Green is certainly a buzz guy, but I put him in this section because he’s a “known” sleeper. Scroll down early and snag him if you want him. … We should have word on Josh Gordon’s suspension appeal this week or next. If drafting in the dark, I’d start to take a look in Round 10 or 11. … Given how Trent Richardson looked in the preseason opener, Ahmad Bradshaw should be creeping onto radars. … I like Khiry Robinson, but there’s no reason his applet rank (149) or ADP should be so far ahead of Mark Ingram’s. Ingram is ahead on the depth chart and showed signs late last year that he’s turning a corner. … More Favorite Fliers are here, and one I didn’t mention in that column: Travis Kelce. Do yourself a favor and watch both of Kelce’s catches from the first preseason game. … Benny Cunningham is ahead of Tre Mason for backup duties in St. Louis right now.
Who to scroll down for:
132. Danny Amendola
135. Ladarius Green
141. Josh Gordon
159. Johnny Manziel
160. Ahmad Bradshaw
226. James Starks
1774. Mark Ingram
1777. Andre Holmes
1823. Malcom Floyd
1831. Ronnie Hillman
1880. Travis Kelce
1959. Knile Davis
2103. Donte Moncrief
2385. Benny Cunningham
Strategy: Brandin Cooks has been one of the biggest stars of camp/preseason – if you really want him, I’d go a round or two earlier than this 89 spot. … Many of the other buzz guys are buried a little bit, which is good. There’s so much goodness to be had in Rounds 10-13 this year, don’t even think about using that pick on a defense or god forbid a kicker. If we can get Jeremy Hill, Andre Williams, Markus Wheaton and Kenny Britt as upside bench fliers, we’re going to be way ahead of our opponents. … PPR owners need to get on Lance Dunbar as a specialty back for Scott Linehan. We should be able to sneak him through uninformed opponents given this 168 ranking.
Where the buzz guys are ranked:
10. Montee Ball
85. Terrance West
89. Brandin Cooks
96. Rueben Randle
101. Zach Ertz
104. Jeremy Hill
109. Devonta Freeman
115. Andre Williams
116. Justin Hunter
117. Markus Wheaton
168. Lance Dunbar
174. Kenny Britt
Strategy: I’d be thrilled with Julio Jones or Jordy Nelson as my second-round pick, so in turn I’m thrilled with these default ranks. Don’t be scared to take one of them at 13 or 15 or 17 overall just because of where they’re listed. … I suspect Andre Johnson’s ranking here has been stagnant since his mini-holdout was resolved. Pounce. … There are certainly some polarizing opinions out there on Rob Gronkowski. I will not be taking him in Round 1, 2 or 3, but I would take the plunge at 50 overall. Of course, there are enough people out there willing to bet on Gronk’s health that he won’t get to 50. … I want shares of the Browns run game because of the Kyle Shanahan scheme, a nasty offensive line and a (likely) running quarterback in Johnny Manziel. I’d rather take Ben Tate at 80 than Terrance West at 85. … If we miss out on the top tight ends on Yahoo, we can wait. Dennis Pitta, Jordan Reed and Zach Ertz (see below) are all suppressed. … We talked about Bernard Pierce in the Bounce-Back Roundtable, and word has since broke that he’s been outplaying Ray Rice at camp. Rice’s default rank is 83, 23 spots ahead of Pierce. … I was sad to see Hakeem Nicks so low. I was hoping some unsuspecting owner would buy into his name and bite way earlier.
Players listed lower overall than expected:
22. Julio Jones
24. Jordy Nelson
42. Andre Johnson
50. Rob Gronkowski
80. Ben Tate
98. Dennis Pitta
99. Jordan Reed
107. Bernard Pierce
124. Kelvin Benjamin
131. Hakeem Nicks
Strategy: Yahoo drafters need to be aware that the default ranks are skewed toward running back and sharper fantasy players. Seven of the top-12 listed are RBs, four are WRs, one is TE and none are QBs. … A counterattack to these RB-heavy rankings is executing a “zero-RB” strategy. We’ll see people reach for the likes of Giovani Bernard, Andre Ellington and Toby Gerhart especially. … I’m not on board with a true zero-RB strategy, but I’m completely fine starting Jimmy Graham/Jordy Nelson or Demaryius Thomas/Brandon Marshall. Stay true to your board in the early rounds, let the unprepared owners make their picks based off the default ranks. … To be clear, I was very disappointed to see Bernard, Ellington and Gerhart so high in Yahoo’s applet. We’re definitely not going to steal them, and will likely have to overpay if we want them. I’ll be sticking to my board … Guys I hope my opponents buy into off these ranks include Alfred Morris, Rashad Jennings and Bishop Sankey. … If you thought you had a nice sleeper in Cordarrelle Patterson, think again. In fact, we could make a very good argument he’s overvalued at this point. ... I can see the argument for a Lamar Miller bounceback as he’s out of the debacle that was Mike Sherman’s offense. But this applet ranking is outrageous for a player who has an awful offensive line and hasn’t shown he can run physically enough in the NFL. … My three favorite mid/late-round quarterbacks are Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler and Tony Romo. Given Ryan’s rank here, I’ll likely be forced to target one of the latter two.
Players listed higher overall than expected:
13. Arian Foster
17. Giovani Bernard
19. Andre Ellington
25. Alfred Morris
28. Toby Gerhart
29. C.J. Spiller
37. Rashad Jennings
39. Bishop Sankey
44. Cordarrelle Patterson
54. Cam Newton
58. Matt Ryan
59. Lamar Miller
I’d make a lot of changes if I were in charge of the fantasy world. Kickers would be gone, defensive/special teams scoring would be dampened and half-PPR would be standard. But the biggest change I’d make is eliminating default rankings from the online draft applets.
If the players were simply listed in alphabetical order, owners would actually have to bring the thunder to their draft. Instead, unprepared – or even prepared – owners use these default rankings as a crutch. That means they may be afraid to pull the trigger on X guy in the second round because they are listed as a fifth-rounder in the applet. Or maybe they take Y guy early just because his name is on top of those default rankings. And if there are auto drafters, being aware of who is on top of the pile is crucial.
Don’t be one of those owners I described above. We’ve given you rankings, projections, mock drafts and tiers in the Draft Guide. Evan Silva has been constantly updating his top-150 and broke down an industry draft. I’ve told you who I’m targeting as sleepers in the later rounds and who I’m handcuffing. Pat Daugherty has walked you through some questionable ADPs and brought the team together for informative roundtables. Most importantly, our often imitated but never duplicated player news blurbs continue to give you the most valuable information in the fantasy atmosphere.
Tre Mason rushes for 51 yards in Rams debut
Tre Mason rushed for 51 yards on 15 carries in Friday night's preseason opener versus New Orleans.
Advice: Mason was the No. 3 back behind Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham. (Isaiah Pead didn't dress due to a hand injury.) Mason had nowhere to go early on, often running into the backs of linemen and getting dropped immediately in the backfield. But once the Saints' third- and fourth-reamers came in, Mason found more room to run. He also had a nice blitz pickup, an area of Mason's game that is a question mark. Cunningham has a comfortable lead for No. 2 duties. He and Mason would share the work if Stacy got hurt. Rotoworld.
Grieving Thomas eats up Seahawks
Grieving Demaryius Thomas had five catches for 52 yards on six targets in Thursday's preseason opener.
Advice: Thomas missed a bunch of early-camp practices after losing his grandmother to Alzheimer's. He shook off any rust with ease against the Seahawks. Thomas racked up the impressive stats on just 16 snaps, highlighting just how unstoppable the size-speed freak is. With Eric Decker gone and the offensive line improved, Demaryius has No. 1 overall wideout potential this season. Rotoworld.com
Dez Bryant looking strong at Cowboys camp
Through two weeks of training camp, Dez Bryant has been "just as good if not better" than he's been over the last two seasons.
Advice: Bryant has posted back-to-back campaigns of 90+ catches, 1,200+ yards and 12+ touchdowns, and is showing no signs of slowing down as he enters his prime. Now in a contract year, he has even more upside this year thanks to the presence of Scott Linehan, a defense that will yield shootouts and an offensive line that will give Tony Romo tons of time. There's not too much separating Bryant, Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones and Demaryius Thomas right now. Rotoworld.com
Gronk graduates to 7-on-7 drills in practice
Rob Gronkowski (ACL, MCL surgery) participated in 7-on-7 drills in Monday's practice.
Advice: He was outfitted in a non-contact jersey, but it's a major step nonetheless. Despite the good news, Gronk remains without a timetable for a return to contact drills. He's almost certainly not going to suit up this preseason, but Week 1 remains a realistic goal. Rotoworld.com
Texans cut ties with RB Dennis Johnson
Texans waived RB Dennis Johnson.
Advice: Several draftniks were high on Johnson when he came out of Arkansas last year, but it hasn't worked out. He appeared in eight games for Houston as a rookie, rushing for 183 yards on 49 carries (3.7 YPC) and catching eight balls for 46 yards. Johnson is undersized at 5'7/193. He has 4.48 wheels but projects as a scatback at best who can also help out on returns. Rotoworld.com
Steven Jackson (hammy) doing agility drills
Steven Jackson performed some agility drills on Monday for the first time since suffering a left hamstring injury on July 28.
Advice: Jackson has yet to progress to sprinting, but this can be considered a step forward nonetheless. The 31-year-old is unlikely to see much, if any, preseason work. Coach Mike Smith continues to insist S-Jax will be ready for the Week 1 opener. He's a roll-of-the-dice RB2. On the surface, Jackson could be a value pick at his current late seventh-round ADP. But we tend to shy away from running backs on the wrong side of 30 who have lower-body injury questions. Rotoworld.com
Brdigewater has 'crummy' practice Monday
The St. Paul Pioneer Press' Chris Tomasson described Teddy Bridgewater's practice on Monday night as "crummy."
Advice: According to reports, Bridgewater threw three interceptions and should've had a fourth pick. This comes on the heels of Bridgewater's lackluster preseason debut, where he completed just 6-of-13 passes for 49 yards and struggled to move the offense. Matt Cassel has already been named the starter for this week's second preseason game. Bridgewater will handle the second-team reps. Rotoworld.com
Skins frustrated with RB Thompson's injuries
Coach Jay Gruden expressed frustration with RB Chris Thompson's inability to stay healthy.
Advice: "It's disappointing," Gruden said. "He's got to figure out how to stay healthy." Thompson tore his ACL in October 2012 at Florida State, and landed on I.R. with a torn labrum in his shoulder last season. He's now dealing with a low-ankle sprain, causing him to miss the past five days. After a strong spring that had the team excited about Thompson, he's now on the roster bubble. Rotoworld.com
Browns sign veteran QB Rex Grossman
Browns signed QB Rex Grossman.
Advice: Backups Tyler Thigpen and Connor Shaw can probably start packing their bags. Grossman has a history with OC Kyle Shanahan, having played for him in both Houston and Washington. Grossman will not be a factor to start. Instead, he'll be a sounding board for both Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel. Rotoworld.com
Toby Gerhart (hip) back at practice Tuesday
Toby Gerhart (hip) returned to practice Tuesday.
Advice: Gerhart will try and play Thursday after missing the preseason opener with a hip flexor issue. He missed the past ten days or so as more of a precaution. There's no reason for the Jaguars to rush their workhorse back onto the field. We've seen Gerhart's ADP dip from the late third round to early fourth over the past two weeks. He may struggle for TDs, but Gerhart is a true three-down back. Rotoworld.com
Sanu expected to play outside with Jones hurt
Mohamed Sanu is expected to play outside more while Marvin Jones (foot) is sidelined.
Advice: Dane Sanzenbacher is the favorite for slot duties. Tyler Eifert is also mentioned as a player whose role could increase while Jones is out with his broken foot. Sanu is reportedly having a strong camp, but we're not targeting him, or even Sanzenbacher for that matter, in fantasy. A.J. Green should dominate targets in Jones' absence, while the Bengals lean on RBs Gio Bernard and Jeremy Hill. Rotoworld.com
Marvin Jones unlikely to go on short-term IR
The Cincinnati Enquirer doesn't anticipate Marvin Jones (foot) opening the season on short-term injured reserve.
Advice: If the Bengals were to use the designated for return spot on Jones, he wouldn't be able to play until Week 9 at the earliest. While it would make some sense and allow Jones to fully heal in time for the stretch run, the Bengals believe Jones can be available much sooner. The best guess is that Jones will miss the first three games of the season and return in Week 5 following the Bengals' bye. Rotoworld.com
Packers TE Bostick sees uptick in 1st-tm reps
Brandon Bostick saw increased reps with the starting offense in Monday's practice.
Advice: Bostick is the most dynamic playmaker in the Packers' tight end group, and beat writer Rob Demovsky believes Bostick might be a "ready-made" replacement for Jermichael Finley. Bostick played behind Andrew Quarless and rookie Richard Rodgers in the preseason opener. Coach Mike McCarthy said the three will continue to rotate. Things are far from settled at tight end in Green Bay, but it's hard to ignore the athleticism Bostick brings to the position. Bostick, 25, ran 4.59 with a 36-inch vertical and 10-foot-1 broad jump at his 2012 Pro Day. Those are very good numbers for a 6-foot-3, 250-pound tight end. Rotoworld.com
Lighter McCoy looks 'better than ever'
According to ESPN Eagles reporter Phil Sheridan, LeSean McCoy looks "better than ever."
Advice: Now in his true prime at 26 years old, McCoy is playing with a top-3 offensive line and in a run-first scheme. He's dropped a few pounds off his '13 playing weight, reportedly gaining even more quickness and agility. "McCoy seems better at getting out into pass routes and catching the ball. He teases defenders who try to cover him," Sheridan said. McCoy is our No. 1 overall pick in fantasy drafts. Rotoworld.com
Knowshon Moreno returns to team drills
Knowshon Moreno (knee) participated in contact drills Monday for the first time since his scope.
Advice: It was Moreno's first full-padded practice since Super Bowl week. He's reportedly in better shape than he was at OTAs and is having no trouble making sharp cuts. Ideally, the Dolphins will use him as a pass protector and receiving back while Lamar Miller handles the bulk of the early-down carries. Rotoworld.com
Boykin has been 'no better than average'
Jarrett Boykin has reportedly been "no better than average" so far at camp.
Advice: It's no surprise as Boykin is an average talent. His fantasy upside is propped up by Aaron Rodgers and a Green Bay offense that is going to be elite this season. Of course, Boykin needs to hold off Davante Adams to realize that opportunity -- and he got a boost when Adams muffed two punts in the preseason opener. The rookie out of Fresno has also struggled with drops at practice. Rotoworld.com
Marshall fully healthy, clicking with Cutler
Brandon Marshall had five catches for 31 yards on just 17 snaps in Saturday's preseason opener against the Eagles.
Advice: Marshall had a rocky 2013 offseason, fighting a hip injury while adjusting to the new Marc Trestman offense. He still went off for 100-1,295-12 while playing in all 16 games for the third straight year. Now Marshall is fully healthy, has a year in the scheme under his belt, and we know Jay Cutler will pepper him with targets. The quiet offseason is a good thing for our No. 6 fantasy wideout. Rotoworld.com
Tre Mason improving in blitz pickup
Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer said third-round RB Tre Mason has done a "great job" in blitz pickup.
Advice: Mason wasn't asked to protect the quarterback at Auburn. In the preseason opener, he stuck his nose in there and picked up a blitzing Saints defender, drawing praise from the coaches. It's Mason's easiest path to playing time behind bellcow Zac Stacy. If he can show that he can be trusted to not miss assignments, Mason can earn a role as Stacy's change-of-pace back. Rotoworld.com
Rivera confirms Cotchery, Avant Nos. 2, 3 WRs
Coach Ron Rivera confirmed Kelvin Benjamin, Jerricho Cotchery, and Jason Avant are the Panthers' top three receivers.
Advice: It's no surprise. Tiquan Underwood is competing for a situational deep threat role, along with Tavarres King. Brenton Bersin, Marvin McNutt, and Kealoha Pilares are also in the mix for reserve spots. There's been plenty of talk about how Cam Newton has "nobody to throw to," but with Kelvin Benjamin playing far better than expected this summer, and Cotchery and Avant's reliable hands, there's reason to believe this year's receiver group is better than last season's. Newton is a recommended value pick at his current late-7th round ADP. Rotoworld.com
Jordy Nelson (hamstring) back at practice
Jordy Nelson (hamstring) returned to Packers practice Tuesday.
Advice: Nelson missed the preseason opener as a precaution. He may even skip this week's game against the Rams, but there's zero concern about his Week 1 availability. Nelson is our No. 7 fantasy receiver, sandwiched between Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. He averaged six catches for 101 yards per game and scored seven touchdowns with Aaron Rodgers at quarterback last season. Rotoworld.com

HiEnergy Technologies Begins Marketing Novel Counter-Terrorism Weapon
Business Editors
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HIET--
CARBOMB FINDER 3C3(TM) Represents First Company Product to Market;
Transforms HiEnergy from Research and Development
to Commercially Viable Entity
HiEnergy Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: HIET) today announced its
stoichiometric explosive detector, the CarBomb Finder 3C3(TM), has
been approved for marketing and sale by the Company's Board of
Directors. Stoichiometric explosive detectors provide the unique and
remote deciphering of chemical formulas through steel using advanced
technology with fast neutrons and gamma rays. The CarBomb Finder
3C3(TM) is the first product HiEnergy Technologies has brought to
market in its six-year history.
"This is an important milestone for HiEnergy and its shareholders.
We are pleased to bring our stoichiometer explosive detector to market
and are particularly confident in its superiority compared to current
explosive detection technologies, which are chemically blind and
dependent upon shape and density for classification, which results in
many false alarms and consequent manual inspections," said Dr. Bogdan
Maglich, CEO and Chief Scientific officer of HiEnergy. "In addition to
offering a substantially more cost-effective and accurate tool in the
remote detection of explosives, the CarBomb Finder 3C3(TM) weighs only
approximately 80 pounds (200 pounds with shielding). The X-ray
machines weigh 10 times as much." Dr. Maglich noted the base price of
CarBomb Finder 3C3(TM) starts at approximately $99,000, a fraction of
the cost of TSA certified X-ray detectors.
HiEnergy will commence immediate marketing of the CarBomb Finder
both domestically and internationally through its wholly owned
subsidiary, Hi-Energy Defense, Inc., and through its developing
network of independent sales representatives in Europe and the Middle
East. 3C3(TM) was initially tested by the inspectors of AENA, the
airport security agency of the Government of Spain, in September 2003.
Subsequently, AENA invited the Company to bring the CarBomb Finder to
the Madrid Airport for in-field tests at the airport parking lot.
"HiEnergy is ready to ship the equipment to Madrid. We await the
routine permission of the Spanish radiation safety agency of the
Ministry of Economics, which we hope will be granted in approximately
30 days.
"In addition to the commercial application of the CarBomb Finder
3C3(TM), our business plan calls for the application of stoichiometric
explosive detectors to airport security screening as well. Our
strategic decision to initially utilize this novel counter-terrorism
product to car bombs was based on the fact that it can detect them 10
times faster than bombs in luggage. Once acceptance has been
established, we plan to commercialize the more sensitive and
profitable SuperSenzor Stoichiometers, our top line product currently
under development, to airports on a global basis," said Dr. Maglich.
The same core equipment installed in the CarBomb Finder 3C3(TM)
was tested by the U.S. Navy on January 9, 2003. The system had a 100%
effective rate in the detection of explosives.
Advantages of the CarBomb Finder 3C3(TM) over PELAN, the only
other fast neutron chemical-based detector, will be posted on
HiEnergy's website, www.hienergyinc.com by January 23. Based upon
available information and tests, the 3C3 is substantially faster and
more accurate than PELAN. Furthermore, PELAN is unable to
quantitatively detect nitrogen - the salient 'signature' of
explosives. Hence, unlike the 3C3, PELAN cannot definitely determine
explosive devices without secondary inspections.
About HiEnergy Technologies, Inc.
HiEnergy's Stoichiometry technology has applications in several
markets, including airport security screening, bio-weapons detection,
landmine detection, contraband detection, and chemical and
petrochemical industry applications. It has been developed through
several years of research funded by both the private sector and the
contracts from the Department of Defense and U.S. Customs.
Currently, HiEnergy is under contract with the U.S. Army to
develop a Stoichiometer prototype for anti-tank landmine detection.
The first field test is scheduled for March 15, 2004.

Camera Phones Help Buyers Beware
By Amit Asaravala / Also by this reporter Page 1 of 1

The CueCat -- that pesky bar-code scanner from Digital Convergence -- may be dead, but its spirit is finding new life in the form of a camera phone.
During the past six months, no fewer than four software firms have released applications to help consumers turn their camera-equipped mobile phones into personal bar-code scanners.

never settle. Like the CueCat, the applications automatically trigger the download of coupons, reviews and other information about a given product whenever a user takes a photo of its bar code.
But whereas the CueCat needed to be plugged into a computer, shoppers can use the new services wherever they can take their camera-equipped mobile phone, and no special hardware is required -- features that proponents say will help make these systems far more successful than their much-mocked predecessor.
Although the technologies are still in their early stages, the trend is rekindling talk of a shopping revolution.
"Clearly, this is going to change the way people think about shopping," said Olivier Attia, chief executive of New York-based Scanbuy, one of the firms specializing in bar-code-scanning software.
For example, "with a camera phone that is also a bar-code scanner, you can go into a store like Barnes & Noble, take a photo of the ISBN number on a book and instantly receive a coupon offering the book for 30 percent less at Amazon.com," said Attia.
Introduced three years ago in Japan and less than a year ago in the United States, camera phones are well on their way to becoming the most popular consumer device in history. According to research firm IDC, more than 80 million have been sold worldwide.
Although most camera phones already contain their own Web browser that owners can use to manually look up product websites, Attia and others believe the bar-code system is likely to be more popular because it is easier to use.
"Right now, when people are shopping, no one is going to use their (phone's Web browser) to type in 'www.google.com' to search for product information," said Attia. "It's not practical."
Macromedia software engineer Sean Neville, who recently developed his own camera-phone scanner software for personal use, agreed that the systems are a lot more powerful than standard Web browsers.
"It's a real eye-opener," he said in a phone interview. With the camera-phone scanner, "you can aggregate a lot of different information from different sources just by scanning something. You can do that on your own or at a desktop computer, but then you have to look up a bunch of sources and go looking for all the individual sites and so on."
According to Attia, Scanbuy is already in "very advanced" talks with two American wireless service providers to offer similar services to their customers within six to nine months.
The company also announced earlier in the month that it is working with Ericsson to produce camera phones that come pre-installed with Scanbuy's bar-code-scanning software, called ScanZoom.
Scanbuy's competitors are not far behind. Japan's M-Ken and Mediastick have announced services that work with various phones on the NTT DoCoMo network. And Florida's NeoMedia Technologies is testing software on the Nokia 3650 and 3660 series phones.
Whether retailers will be threatened by the camera-phone scanners remains to be seen.
According to Macromedia's Neville, smart retailers will see the system as an opportunity to reach customers. "They could use the services to push out recommendations based on what users have scanned," suggested Neville.
As for the not-so-smart retailers: "They may begin to put up signs on the door that say, 'No smoking, no pets and no camera phones allowed inside,'" jokes Attia.

Numbers of patent, trademark infringement suits skyrocketing
By LAURA LAYDEN, lllayden@naplesnews.com
January 19, 2004
NeoMedia owns a bridge.
It's an expensive bridge the company has built to connect the real world with the virtual world.
If you want to cross that bridge, you'll have to pay. Otherwise, you're in for a bumpy ride.
That's the message Fort Myers-based NeoMedia Technologies Inc. sends in a lawsuit filed on Jan. 2 against Virgin Entertainment Group Inc. and its subsidiaries Virgin Megastore and Virgin Megastore Online in Los Angeles.
NeoMedia, a company whose shares trade publicly on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board, claims Virgin has infringed on four of its patents by using a technology that allows customers in its stores to scan CDs and DVDs to get information on the Internet, such as movie previews and video art.
While this marks the first patent infringement lawsuit NeoMedia has filed since it was founded in 1989, it's part of a larger trend in Southwest Florida and across the country.

NeoMedia Contracts with 12snap, Innovator in Cell Phone Marketing, for European Launch of PaperClick for Nokia Camera Cell Phones
LONDON and FT. MYERS, Fla. , Jan. 14, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- NeoMedia Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB:NEOM) and 12snap U.K. Ltd, which specializes in advertising and marketing in the cell phone industry, announced today that they have contracted for 12snap to engineer the European launch of PaperClick for Camera Cell Phones(TM) for Nokia(R) Camera Cell Phones.
NeoMedia and 12snap U.K. have been working together since September of 2002 under the terms of a Letter of Intent.
In late December, NeoMedia announced that the first working units of PaperClick for Camera Cell Phones for the Nokia 3650 and 3660 camera phones were available.
Using Cell Phones to Launch PaperClick for Cell Phones
"The launch of PaperClick will utilize the mobile/cell channel itself," said Martin Copus, managing director of 12snap. "The medium and its ability to innovate really is the message here," he said, citing his agency's 2003 campaign for Walkers(R) Snack Foods (Frito Lay(R)), the largest-ever text messaging promotion in the U.K., which incorporated direct to phone text crediting for the first time.
"12snap is a creative force which thrives on innovative concepts and technologies," he said. "We are thrilled to be moving forward under contract to launch PaperClick in Europe."
What Nokia Camera Cell Phones Do with PaperClick
"With the power of PaperClick for Cell Phones, information retrieval is truly wireless," said Chas Fritz, NeoMedia's chairman. "Now, just by taking a picture of a UPC or EAN bar code with a camera cell phone, you can display data on the screen anywhere, anytime."
Fritz said NeoMedia has activated a few UPC and EAN product codes for demo purposes, making it possible to take a picture of the code on a product, such as a can or bottle of soda, and then go right to the targeted Web site. As part of the working demo, users will also be able to do comparison shopping with PaperClick for Cell Phones . . . for example, taking a picture of the ISBN (for International Standard Book Numbers) code on virtually any book to link automatically via the Internet to a Web site displaying an image of the book and its price elsewhere
Patented PaperClick Technology
NeoMedia's patented PaperClick(TM) technology allows bar codes and other machine-readable identifiers to be directly linked to Web pages and other information sources, and runs on Windows(R)-based PCs and the Palm Pilot(R) PDA.
PaperClick for Camera Phones was developed and patented by NeoMedia as an extension of its PaperClick platform. It employs a standard browser, client software, and a network of online service and applications servers transparent to users, who simply take a picture with the phone for an automatic link to tailored on-line Web information. PaperClick For Cell Phones installs via the phone's infra red (IrDA) port, the BlueTooth(R) wireless network, or download.
David Foster-Lyons, managing director of BigGig Strategies, which directs NeoMedia's marketing activities in Europe, said he had tracked PaperClick for several years and "believed that the only thing PaperClick needed to be successful was the right device to unleash its power."

I wanted to buy @ .005-.0055 but .0059 will do... she may start to move up tommorow... if she doesn't and dips instead I would have to say she is a strong BUY!!

Welcome to GETC, Toshach.
I've been holding this little gem for some time patiently waiting for funding and forward progression on the JV partnership front.
It has taken some time, but IMO, it's quite telling that the CEO letter is finally out after having no letter for over a year.
This is very bullish to me, and I would not be surprised to see PRs updating us in the coming weeks.
Re: VRMD, that's right greatday.
The PR has valued Meridian's assets at $3.5M. That gives the company a book value of 0.05 which translates into a share price of $0.50-$0.75 depending on the kind of multiple you wish to use.
I would expect a merger like this to close within 90 days.
Plus shareholders now get 40% more shares in VRMD, as well as shares in the real estate spin off portion, with details to be announced.
And the fact that a pink sheet company is going straight to AMEX, is frankly something I have never seen before if they pull it off...That will make headlines IMO.
Today, due to the dividend the SP has adjusted down to the 0.06-0.07 area.
There has not been any short covering as yet, and the estimated short on VRMD is about 10M.
Will be interesting to watch the company's next move.
Not been following for too long, it was the CEO letter that sparked my interest. Nice share structure for a nice move up IMO. Good info on the website as well.
Cheers
Shac.
ToshacH, welcome to the GETC world....
How long have you been following GETC?
Do you have any thoughts on Marv's opinions?
I am in basic agreement with what he said, except for his price targets...are they possible if the shorts are squeezed? I have no idea.
I remember watching the shorts get squeezed on GMXX. The price ran from about $5 to $20 in about a couple weeks, but was back down about a month later.
Geotec says there is a significant short position in GETC, so depending on the size, the news coming out of GETC, who knows what is possible.
greatday8
Gettin in the GETC water today at .13...like that letter
GETC dipped to .11 x .13
The shorts must be trying to hold GETC down and take it lower.
CEO letter says substantial funding for the purchase of generators, treating wells and engineering. Also, say in the near term.
The next week(s) should start the events.
greatday8
Smartbiz, anothers take on GETC....
Marv is a retired stock broker and made this post...

I was visiting with some folks recently that have an interest in GETC---we were emailing back an forth about SA and the midwest gas and the fact we hadn't seen or heard much about the JTEX area--that perhaps we would get a PR sometime this first quarter clarifying some of the previously mentioned areas of GETC direction---when one of the guys said he thought we might see something "new"---
Couldn't get an inkling outta Rick---so ,, there must be something smoldering-----
I remember last year when talking with Rick about this short position and the way they were treating him--and how many , many times they came to him looking for free trading shares and he offered "SQUAT"---
He had already mentioned to me that he had a plan for them---and as I said earlier,,, Rick has a long memory and has stated that he will have his day----
Here is my take on what I think his "day" will be--
A grain of sand (a PR) , another grain of sand (another PR)---and so on ---then suddenly a pebble--then quickly a rock and the the shorts are suddenly caught with their "shorts" down,,,and have to scramble for stock---and THERE WON'T BE ANY---except at much higher prices---which I think will be above the old $7 high--it's my belief that this will be a plus $20 stock---the shorters will drive it there and above because that is the area that will cost them all of their previous profits off GETC---This is what I believe is Rick's plan...
It's my "take" that Rick wants to cost them all the money they made off shorting GETC illegaly---and that's how you do it----in the mkt place ..using patience, dribbling out the line with the baited hook-- the PRs that hint,,, until it's "aw-schit" time for the shorters---Rick doesn't want them to cover here , at this level---
and not in court, even though the FBI is working, courts and lawyers--- that's expensive , with time delays---but in the market place---that way we benefit--in dollars and cents---a court thing might eventually succeed, but it wouldn't benefit us in our pocket book..
Anybody have their "take" on this next two years???
