President’s Comments at Goldfield’s Annual Meeting - May 25, 2017
https://globenewswire.com/news-release/2017/05/25/996292/0/en/President-s-Comments-at-Goldfield-s-Annual-Meeting.html
Yup. Looking good so far. Patience is gonna pay off here, imo.
here we go. onward and upward.. hope everyone got in at 4 bucks a share.
PE OF 10... i like my chances with what the ceo said last week, i am betting we see 8 bucks again this year.
President and Chief Executive Officer John H. Sottile said, “Our 2017 first-quarter electrical construction revenue and operating income continued at nearly the same strong level achieved in the fourth quarter of 2016. On a year over year basis, our results declined in the 2017 period because of the inclusion of certain large, higher margin fixed-price projects in the first quarter of 2016, which were substantially completed in the first half of 2016.
“During the first quarter of 2017, we experienced growth in our Texas operations and other master service agreement, or MSA, projects. As of March 31, 2017, our estimated 12-month MSA backlog grew 70 percent to $53 million from $31 million a year ago, and our estimated 12-month combined backlog grew 17.4 percent to $79 million from $68 million a year ago.
“We also significantly increased the level of our capital investments to $6 million this quarter to upgrade our fleet and to support the Company’s future growth and efficiencies. We believe that these investments will build greater long-term shareholder value. With a healthy backlog and long-term customer relationships, we remain confident in Goldfield’s future,” Mr. Sottile concluded.
if you want a nice investment, this is the play, they will continue to post higher earnings. will be back to 8 bucks this year. mark it on the wall.
this won't be under 6 bucks a share for much longer. good luck to all
under 5 bucks a share equals under a 10 pe ratio. a very good buy. good luck to all

stock getting cheap, everyone better get ready to load up... pe close to 10 now
Heavy trading volume on GV continues. Does anyone know why? Great stock...dead board.
With only 25.451 million shares outstanding, how can this continue to trade over a million shares per day on average for such an extended time? I always thought this company was too small to stay a publicly traded company. So I wonder if someone is accumulating for a takeover bid or is this running up purely as a mommentum play. If management wants to expand through acquisitions now is the time to use their stock as currency. Can anyone shed any light on the heavy volume?
Really hope to get back in when this takes a breather. Nice run up!
One of the best investments I've made
Maybe you missed my post. GV normally reports Q4 numbers in mid-late March. Companies have 45 days to report their 10Qs. But 90 days to report their 10K. That's why the Q4 results typically take a lot longer than Q3 results. Especially with microcaps. Many seem to wait til the very end of March.
last reported on nov 4 for 3rd qtr earnings, thus 4th qtr earnings should be feb 6
GV has reported Q4 results in mid-late March for many years now. Why are you expecting them in 2 weeks??
normal profit taking. it will regain its stride, earnings out in a couple weeks

This leads to a handful of heavy construction companies. The theme here is obvious from the Trump win. We're moving into a period of greater fiscal spending and infrastructure development. One of the value screens brings up Goldfield Corp (NYSEMKT:GV) and the price action looks great.
The weekly chart shows how price rose at the beginning of the year on a large volume after many years of basing (consensus). We ended up taking a position in the Strategic Portfolio around $3 and it's now trading at $4.15; a near 40% move in just a few weeks.
Price action provided a great "go or no-go" entry at $3. If the stock fell below $2.50, then the thesis was wrong, or at the very least the timing was off. This allowed entry with a decent position size that we could pyramid on as price moved in our favor, which is exactly what we've done.
The company has strong top and bottom line growth, a small stock float, and a clean balance sheet. It also specializes in construction on the electricity grid. Our electricity grid in the US is extremely outdated and very vulnerable to attack from foreign nations. Revamping the electricity grid is one of Newt Gingrich's biggest talking points and he's a close friend of Trump's. A $6+ stock is possible in a few months.
We can do this same type of analysis for equities in any market around the world. Now if we're looking at currencies or commodities we'll use a similar framework but some of the inputs (like interest rate differentials and weather patterns) will be different. We'll be writing future articles on all of this.
Disclosure: I/we have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.
I wrote this article myself, and it expresses my own opinions. I am not receiving compensation for it. I have no business relationship with any company whose stock is mentioned in this article.
trumps plan with infrastructure will help with business for this company.
earnings out today... 41 cents a share profit for the last 9 months ending september 30...versus 10 cents... stock is undervalued.
Goldfield and FPL's $1.75 Billion Storm Hardening spend should have a very strong impact in 2017 and 2018 earnings. In 2019, the new Okeechobee $1.2 Billion Power Plant should be opening and will surely need new power lines connected to it.
The stock price is likely suppressed because Ellbar Partners has been selling stock that they bought over 10 years ago for less than a dollar per share. Ellbar should be close to finishing their selling. Once they are done, the stock should head higher.
stock ran to 3.25 last week because of the Matthew hurricane now profit taking has occurred. won't be long it will be 3 bucks then 4 bucks. just a matter of time.
sbaker, I agree. Exactly why I invested here recently. Found this stock years ago after a bad hurricane had battered Florida. Responded with great earnings and hope they do it again. Thanks for info, very good indeed.
T
Goldfield's largest customer FPL to invest $1.75 Billion for Storm Hardening over the next three years. Goldfield reports fully taxed earnings and has earned 48 cents per share over the past twelve months. With hurricane Hermine in Q3 and hurricane Matthew in Q4, coupled with FPL tripling it's Storm Hardening spend, Goldfield should do very well over the next few years.
Low float > 22M
Hurricane Matthew > Emergency work orders:
Q2 is seasonally Goldfield's strongest quarter because the Southeast Power plants do most of their maintenance and upgrade work at this time. If there is a strong hurricane or bad storms in the Fall, then Goldfield will have alot of emergency repair work which usually results in higher margins in Q3.
hey swamp, check closer,, GV has nothing to do with the price of Gold.
Just said by Gov. of Fla. that millions may lose power, hope it does not happen but GV will help.
GV if price of GOLD goes up, Goldfield (GV) could go up.
2.95 high today. pretty soon it will be in the 3 buck zone...... earnings coming out soon.
stock is undervalued. next move will be up. earnings looks like on the uptrend.
Ready for the next dip.
This is always good to buy when it drops a bit.
Out for now
Goldfield is now trading at 6 times fully taxed earnings per share. Best value on the market for a growth stock. It is only 3 times EBITDA and buyouts in this industry happen around 5-6 times EBITDA.
FPL, the third-largest electric utility in the U.S., plans to invest $1.75 billion system-wide over the next three years. That is more than 3 times the $500 million they spent in the previous three years. This means there should be a lot of electric transmission work in Goldfield's home state of Florida.
The new contract backlog increased from last year. The MSA or maintenance backlog only decreased because they are in the middle of their term and are not yet up for renewal. For example, if Goldfield has a 5 year MSA contract with FPL Florida Power for $100 million, the first year you would have a $100 million backlog. But heading into year four, backlog remaining would only be $40 million because $60 million was used up in the first 3 years and at the end of year 5 backlog would be $0. But when it renews the backlog will jump back to $100 million. It's not that they have lost any business, it is just the way the MSA backlog is reported.
I confirmed this MSA backlog "issue" with Goldfield CEO John Sottile at the shareholder meeting on June 2nd. MSA backlog will grow again when renewals are signed and they have plenty of opportunity to continue with MSA work. The recent management position increase points to current growth in their operations.
Up up up
Consistently making money.
Finally making some sp progress.
Management seems to be getting solid the last year
Aren't you concerned about the scary backlog decline last quarter? Total backlog dropped sequentially from $202.9M to $160.7M. That's a $42.2M decline. And Q1 revenues were only $35.8M. So not only did they not win any new business during the quarter, they actually lost some.
Buying on the dips. Every report is growth and substantial revenue attainment.

GV
I've been a buyer of GV this week in the upper 1.60’S and low 1.70's here is what I like.
1) GV Earned .07 this quarter, I think reasonable they can earn .25-.30 going foward, at the current revenue rate. And I don't think it is unreasonable to expect revenue increases sequentially considering my next point.
3) Backlog was a substantially positive for me. I know everyone focuses on the overall backlog down a slight bit sequentially. But that misses the point for the first time in how many quarters can I say the backlog for 12 months is up substantially versus the last 3 month period, in fact it was up over 20% sequentially, this to me was the most exciting part of the pr. Not the earnings, but this.
I was concerned about this trend I do admit until this quarter
Backlog (12 Months)
q3 14 87.4
q4 14 85.3
q1 15 76.8
q2 15 73.0
q3 15 88.5
As one can see this wasn't a pretty picture, before Q3. In fact that number is the highest number I have seen I believe in at the very least recent company history.
3) The other concern is can GV keep margins up. That remains a risk. But it is also could be that those Texas projects were trouble, I know everyone including me got tired of hearing the excuses, but in fairness it was the same project(s) quarter after quarter that was primarily given them the problems, those project have concluded, so I believe that GM will stay relatively healthy from here, as I believe based on what the company said and the quarter the company put up after tell me that is the case, that those projects were simply troubled, but they are behind them.
4) For those that are worried about the sequential drop of revs. I think the 12 month backlog should set aside some of those concerns. More importantly I wonder if q2 seen a boost from the revs finishing those Texas projects, and those revs I'm glad to say goodbye to that is money losing revs, which to me are worse than useless.
Conclusion: I like GV here, I realize it is not without its risks, but I think .25-.30 Going foward conservatively is the number we can look for. Pop a 10 PE on it, and I could see this stock trading in the upper 2's very easily. It may run more, but I want to be conservative.
Admittingly never been a huge supporter of GV, this is the most excited I have been about the stock, for the reason of 12 month backlog up, Money losing project behind them, and stock valuation is too cheap, all of which make me think the stock will go higher in the long run. Time will tell. I will add on weakness. All is just my opinion, and I could always be wrong though.

Hurricane play angle, here is a bit of info from SEC filing and a company website (cut and paste):
Revenues and results of operations in our electrical construction business can be subject to seasonal variations. These variations are influenced by weather, customer spending patterns and system loads. The Company primarily performs work in the southeastern United States. Electric utility customers normally perform their system upgrades and maintenance work during off-peak seasons when the demand for electrical power is reduced, which is in the first two quarters of the year in the southeast region of the United States. This pattern is apparent by the reduction in the number of active projects in the third quarter.
However, since hurricane season normally peaks during this period, this pattern can be offset with
storm restoration work resulting from hurricane damage.
When disaster strikes, Southeast Power continues to
rise to the challenge. Our personnel and our extensive fleet are prepared to mobilize immediately and operate under the most adverse conditions while ensuring the critical time constraints of our customers are met. Our crews have played a major role in storm restoration activities in and around the Southeast for every major hurricane to strike the
region in recent years.
