Now that it has become more a question of whether our plodding recovery
will be enough to buoy the economies of other countries and
regions that aren't faring so well, or will those moribund economies
drag us back into recession.
I fear the latter has the edge right now;
which is why I don't believe the Fed will do anything
to foster the notion that a rate hike is coming
sooner rather than later.

With much of the rest of the world pushing toward easier monetary policy,
there is little incentive for the Fed to push in the other direction.
Gold is likely to benefit if global markets come to that same conclusion.
It would signal that the age of über-accommodative policy and
currency wars is far from being over.

Gold is consolidating at the high end of yesterday's range,
underpinned by heightened global growth concerns and
deflationary risks.
The yellow metal set a new seven-week high yesterday.

Gold prices traded briefly above the important 100-day moving average
yesterday, suggesting that a medium term
change in trend may be in the offing.

Heightened demand for a safe-haven amid rising uncertainty
has put considerable pressure on the existing short position in
the paper market.
Short covering undoubtedly played in a significant role in
yesterday's sharp gains.

that the Swiss Central Bank has engaged in since 2008.

On November 30th the citizens of Switzerland will be offered
the opportunity to vote.

They will do this in a referendum on the “Gold Initiative”
which has three demands:

* Returning the gold held abroad (in Canada and the UK) to Switzerland

* The Swiss National Bank must hold 20% of their assets in physical gold

* No further gold sales.

The fundamentals support an end to the correction that began in September of 2011:

Asian and Russian banks continue to accumulate gold faster
than mines can produce this precious metal.

Western nations are running ongoing Federal Deficits.

Deficits are always covered with printing press money.

This ‘currency destruction’ causes investors to add gold and silver
to their net worth. (See data point from Mark J. Lundeen in this article.

There have been no new multi-million ounce gold discoveries for
a number of years, thus mine supply is not increasing and
may even decline.

New gold mines take ten years from the time gold is found until
production can begin – due to the mountain of regulations
that need to be dealt with.

The cost of building a new gold mine continues to rise,
as building materials cost more over time, and
the price of oil and gas to run the machinery is on the rise
(short-term pullbacks in energy notwithstanding).

This cost of production puts a floor under the gold price
at around $1,200.00.

Central banks have stopped selling gold, and much of the gold that
is supposedly held by these banks, has been leased out and
was sold into the market.

The 8,000 tonnes supposedly in the custody of the US government
has not been audited since 1953.
(Imagine a private company operating in this manner).

The US stock markets are showing signs of topping out.

The money that will now be drawn out of the stock market has to go
somewhere and preferably into a sector that is not overbought.

Bonds are overbought and bubbling, real estate is not cheap,
(except farmland), and this leaves gold and silver which have been
oversold at the COMEX, by bullion banks that do not own the bullion
to back up the contracts they have sold short.

These banks will soon have to begin to cover their short positions,
because of increasing demand for ‘the real thing’.

Bullion ETFs have coughed up many tonnes of physical gold since 2011,
and much of the gold that is left on the shelf is
owned by people who are not interested in selling at
this historically low gold price, (see our first chart).

One of the depressing factors with regard to the gold price so far this year has been the reported fall-off in Chinese gold demand, although by world standards it remains pretty healthy. But there are now signs that it is beginning to pick up again. While the full year total is still not expected to match the record 2013 level a recent pick-up in withdrawals from the Shanghai Gold Exchange (SGE) suggests the lower prices may be beginning to stimulate demand again.

Koos Jansen, who is almost certainly the most consistent analyst and follower of Chinese gold demand data, has noted the pick-up and points out on www.bullionstar.com that the latest published weekly gold withdrawals from the SGE for the last two weeks in August have been 46 tonnes and 42 tonnes respectively. This is a significant jump from earlier levels and suggests the beginning of a healthy return to purchases as the final four months of the year approach.

The SGE figures may be the only reliable indicator out there of the true picture of Chinese demand now that Hong Kong is not the only significant entry point for gold into mainland China. Western analysts had mostly followed the regularly published Hong Kong net export figures to the Chinese mainland as a proxy for total Chinese gold demand, but these have dropped off enormously this year as it is believed that other entry points for gold into the nation are becoming more and more significant, and the figures for gold movement through these are not published by the Chinese government. Whether or not this is a deliberate attempt by the Chinese to make life more difficult for those trying to make sense of the country’s gold import data, or an unintended consequence of the widening of import channels, is uncertain. However it perhaps leaves the SGE as the only source of consistent data and the fact that this data is still published weekly does suggest the broadening of the gold import channels may perhaps not be a deliberate move to muddy the waters on overall gold demand assessment by outsiders!

So, in the year to August 29th Jansen notes that the SGE has
reported gold withdrawals from the exchange –
which he equates to total Chinese wholesale gold demand for
the period - as amounting to 1251 tonnes.
This is a fall of 17% from the same time last year which tallies
pretty well with assumed Chinese demand fall-off, but is not
nearly as big a fall as many mainstream media reports, drawing on
the Hong Kong figures alone, seem to imply.
And if these latest weekly SGE withdrawal figures are maintained
for the rest of the year – traditionally a strong period for
Chinese gold purchases – then although total China demand for the
full year is indeed likely to remain lower than a year ago,
the fall-off may end up
as even less significant than the 17% drop seen so far.
Chinese gold demand has thus not ‘collapsed’ as a total reliance on
the Hong Kong net figures might suggest, but remains pretty
healthy, albeit at a slightly lower level than a year ago.

The two ETF's that I follow are the GLD and SLV. You must be very
careful in trading these vehicles as these funds do not have
any beneficial gold or silver behind them.

They probably have only paper claims and when the dust settles,
on a collapse, there will be countless class action lawsuits
trying to recover your lost investment.

There is now evidence that the GLD and SLV are paper settling
on the comex.

***I do not think that the GLD will head to zero
as we still have some GLD shareholders who think that gold
is the right vehicle to be in even though they do not
understand the difference between paper gold and physical gold.
I can visualize demand coming to the buyers side:

i) demand from paper gold shareholders
ii) demand from the bankers who then redeem for gold
to send this gold onto China

vs no sellers of GLD paper.
