Li-Ion Conductors: A New Pathway to Sustainable Batteries
According to a study published in the journal Science, a solid that conducts lithium (Li) ions quickly has been found by researchers at the University of Liverpool. These Li-ion electrolytes are crucial parts of the rechargeable batteries that run a lot of modern devices, including electric vehicles.
The new material, which is composed of components that are naturally occurring and non-toxic, has a high enough Li-ion conductivity to replace the liquid electrolytes used in existing Li-ion battery technology, increasing energy capacity and safety.
The multidisciplinary research team from the university designed the material using a transformational scientific method. They synthesized the material in the lab, identified its structure (the arrangement of atoms in space), and showed it in a battery cell.

🔋🇺🇸🇨🇳 Battery costs are the Wealth of Nations.
For all the flaws and complexities we've pointed out in the US Inflation Reduction Act, one part is working as intended: the 45X Advanced Manufacturing Production Tax Credit.
To produce battery cells in the US, you get up to $35/kWh against the cost of labour and processing, both of which are otherwise systemically more expensive in the US compared to China.
Note that the cost of materials is excluded - this is clever as it avoids effectively subsidising a mine or cathode plant outside the US, and only counts the value added in that step domestically.
This is having a profound effect on company operating profits - see Panasonic/LG/SK reports.
It also means that, even with pessimistic parameters in our cost model, it can enable cost-competitiveness with that of the average Chinese counterpart.
Reach out to Aaron Wade - who is at #NAATBatt today - if you want to understand how battery costs are influences and how the CRU Battery Cost Model can help you.

Today we are at #NAATBATT! An excellent and timely Bloomberg article on IRA tax credits was just published:
https://lnkd.in/eM-XuXAV
Here the CRU Battery Cost Model illustrates how the percentage of value of critical minerals in an NMC 811 battery changes over time versus the IRA's requirement for where the critical minerals are sourced.
Last year automakers were generally compliant as long as they sourced lithium from the US or Free-Trade-Agreement country. This is relatively easy considering the abundance of lithium from Chile and Australia.
But as the thresholds tighten, they need to look to compliant sourcing also for nickel, cobalt, or graphite - the processing of which which is dominated by China. If material passes through China, the entire tax credit falls apart.
We are in California the rest of the week. Reach out to us to talk about how our tools can help you to design your batteries and structure your supply chains to align with the US IRA!

“The battery cell now has greater energy density, uses fewer natural resources, charges faster, and costs less to manufacture. Cell formats can include cylindrical, pouch, or prismatic.”
“If only.”
I didn’t even consider, bitcoin/etfs when I was looking into it. It was a risk that didn’t sit well with me.
Even taking profits on stock I have been pushing to a safer bets, such as cd’s and stocks carrying dividend payouts.
No worries myte. Not talking my life savings by any means.
Americans used to wager on Canadian Resources - Now they're all in Cryptos
Not to be a Negative nancy or nuthin' but ;
I'm 1/2 expecting our Juniors Index to revisit its' 500
Compare those performances against that of the cryptos.........They (somewhat) equal polar opposites....
Why buy resource stocks when one could have bought Bitcoins ?

Leave it up to Elon to find the work around in order to get the Inflation Reduction Act/US DOE $2.8 Billion Energy Bill/American Battery Material Initiative(pick one). CATL, major R&D company with lots and lots of money, my guess is, that Elon needs to catch up to VW on the SSB they(VW) just tested. And to expedite and fall under US guidelines for the EV incentives this was the path. I would love to count how many lawyers are in that room picking that apart to not get burnt by the US DOE fire on the hoop.

“In the case of the sodium-oxygen cell, the proton phase catalyst transfers the newly formed sodium superoxide (NaO2) entities to solution where they nucleate into well-defined nanocrystals to grow the discharge product as micron-sized cubes.
The dimensions of the initially formed NaO2 are critical; theoretical calculations from a group at MIT has separately shown that NaO2 is energetically preferred over sodium peroxide, Na2O2 at the nanoscale.”
Definitely, investing.

She is right in so many ways. I like her view on, not just 1 battery in the portfolio, but many battery chemistry makeups in the portfolio. To meet demands at particular needs, in cost and functionality.
I agree with her in regards of the US DOE putting up a competition on a Battery Innovation Prize. It would be awesome to see what would come out of the wood work with the chemistry’s that have been approached in making, “energy storage systems.”
I am going to throw some more money at GMGMF, I think she is on to something there with manufacturing cost. GMGMF has so far got a great lead in the market on the concept.

Cover the ones they know are dead wells or no brine bearing wells.
That way they look like the good guys while sneaking a DLE onto the wells that are good.
Opinion, waste of time and resources. Taking those funds and pushing them into SSB development is the answer.
But some of those companies are so heavily invested at this point, they keep going, to recoup some of their cost.

the life cycle of a well
Chevron plans for the full life cycle of our wells, retiring them with the same emphasis on safety and the environment as when they were operational.
It’s up to Eliason and her team—as well as several other teams within Chevron—to properly restore the land surrounding decommissioned wells. By the time they’re through removing equipment and restoring the landscape, the land is prepared for its next chapter.
And John is sitting around upper 90’s percentage wise, in returned brine, no inorganic material.
He can master that with oil producers, he has cornered a market opportunity then.

Steve LeVine posted today a very interesting article on LFP mass-adoption. To add to his excellent article, please find here one of the reasons for the recent increase in LFP from China in the USA and European cell and EV factories.
The key LFP patents were held by four companies that made the decision a decade ago to let Chinese producers use the IP for free as long as they did not export. This started the large production ramp-up inside China for domestic uses. However, the key patents expired in 2021, opening the floodgates to exporting inexpensive LFP.

BHP can and will play the long game on their strategic foresight driven investment into hashtag#transition metals.
Since getting back into work after the holidays- it’s clear though from conversations across our clients that everyone is now focused on trying to understand what’s happening with the accelerated Chinese investment into the Indonesian hashtag#nickel sector- from hashtag#mining through to hashtag#smelting. What will be the hashtag#carbon, hashtag#ghg, hashtag#sustainability and hashtag#esg profile of that hashtag#commodity and hashtag#metal flow? Will price always be the key buyer criteria?
Quote from the article by James Thompson:
“But we shouldn’t miss what BHP is saying here in calling out a structural change in the market. To be clear, the view inside the company has not changed in terms of nickel’s long-term demand story. But there is a clear sense that the industry, and BHP, have been surprised by the pace at which Indonesia’s supply has increased, and the rate at which technological changes have allowed this lower-quality Indonesian nickel to infiltrate the part of the supply chain that BHP targets with its nickel sulphide.”
