Decarbonizing Minerals and Metals
1d • Edited •
Former clients and #lithium friends have asked me why I've been so quiet recently...
After a couple years of consulting for an incredible portfolio of clients including Livent, Tesla, Northvolt, Our Next Energy (ONE), and so many other rock star builders, a new technology development project took me over that I could not resist.
Specifically, a project with Jacob Brown who became an insta-best friend when he moved to San Francisco 3 years ago to build the cathode pilot for Tesla's cell program. Our journeys were weirdly similar: both making our ways out of Anglosphere mining colonies (him from Australia, me from Canada) to work on carbon conversion in "real countries" (him at University of Cambridge in the UK, me at Northwestern University in the US), and then both ending up in the battery material supply chain after realizing carbon just ain't it. Last year we rotated out of lithium and batteries at the peak of a lithium battery hype boom to solve an unexamined, severe critical mineral problem with radical environmental and national security implications.
More details soon. And no, it has nothing to do with #boron! Sorry.

“The money makes it real”
That statement gives true to a lot of business happenings and decisions on investors money.
Batteries + Hydrogen
“HYLA is the name given to Nikola’s fueling brand — a mashup of “HYdrogen and NikoLA” — and it recently closed a deal with Voltera to build out 50 such H stations at a cost of between $750 million and $1 billion. “The money makes it real,” he said, pointing out that the stations, and the HFCEV version of Nikola’s semi, would be in production by Q3 of this year, with deliveries to customers beginning in Q1 of ’24.”

Yes. And in AMPX they are using Nanotechnology in Lithium.

Elements that get away from expensive mining and manufacturing processes.
22-minute mark. They talks nanotube is part of production today for ampx battery. Corey, said he watched them being made.
It is your world, am I hearing it correctly?
As exciting as this is, I know personally we are 10 - 15 years away from making nanotube’s our backbone of energy harnessing, storage and transfer.
There is a lot of great work being done to lay down the foundational ground work. There is work being put into the “core” platform for all three stages of development.
It is great to see LG is on board with this technology as well.
This is Science at its best. I hope to see more like this in the future.

I heard about this on a podcast awhile back. If I find it I will post it.
Introduction
Electrical motors are reversible machines; they can function as motors or as generators. A motor receives electrical power from a battery and transforms it in torque developing a Counter Electromotive Force CEMF (also known as Back EMF or BEMF), which opposes the battery. A generator receives mechanical power from a mechanical actuator and transforms it in electrical power developing a Counter Torque, which opposes the actuator.
A motor behaves as motor and as generator at the same time. In fact while a motor is 'motoring', that is doing mechanical work, it generates CEMF acting as generator, although the CEMF is lower than the battery voltage so the motor acts as a load and absorbs current.
In certain situations the CEMF may overcome the battery, in which case the generator component becomes dominant; the motor acts as a generator inverting the direction of its current and forcing it into the battery.
The typical situation is the one of a heavy vehicle rolling on a sharp downhill slope and forcing the motor to turn fast enough that the CEMF becomes larger than the battery voltage. As soon as the motor overcomes the battery it inverts the current direction and starts feeding current into the battery, while developing a counter torque that acts as a brake. This phase is called regeneration (recharging of the battery).
Totally agree with that.
Airplanes would be great. Cooling is provided.
I wish they could figure out power regeneration of other means than through brakes. That could help in mileage.

Breakthrough in Battery Technology: Chinese Researchers Unveil 711 Wh/ kg Lithium Battery
April 28, 2023
A Leap Forward in Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Density
Recently, Chinese researchers developed a #LithiumIonBattery with an astonishing #energydensity of about 700 Wh/kg. While today's #lithiumbatteries struggle to achieve an energy density of 300 Wh/kg, this breakthrough has the potential to revolutionize #batterytechnology in the future, particularly for long-range electric vehicles and electric aviation.
The research team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Physics in Beijing used a lithium metal #anode and an ultra-thick high discharge capacity #cathode with an area capacity greater than 10 mAh/cm2. They attribute their achievement to the lithium-rich manganese-based oxides' high charge/discharge voltage, which allows for larger lithium-ion storage capacity.
Source: A 700 W·h·kg-1 Rechargeable Pouch Type Lithium Battery, Quan Li et al 2023 Chinese Phys. Lett. 40 048201
Despite the exciting progress, the researchers acknowledge that there will always be a trade-off between energy density, cycle performance, rate capability, and safety. The cycle performance of high energy density batteries still lags behind that of commercially available batteries, and overcoming this limitation will be the focus of their future research.
$1000 a kilowatt hour. 19-minute mark for the amprius battery.
It is not going to replace the lithium ion battery for many years, unless very high end cars.
Airplanes first. Maybe indy race cars

Corfo selects BYD Chile to promote lithium value-added initiatives
by PortalMinero | Apr 20, 2023
Thursday, April 20, 2023.- After an evaluation process that lasted from November 2022, the Corporation for the Promotion of Production, Corfo, assigned the quality of specialized lithium producer to the proponent BYD Chile SpA.
In this way, BYD Chile SpA will access the preferential price established for one of the lithium carbonate quotas available in the corresponding call bases up to 11,244 tons / year of battery grade Lithium Carbonate (Li2CO3), and a supply contract by SQM Salar S.A. until 2030, for its project "BYD Chile Lithium Cathode Plant" that will be installed in the Antofagasta Region.
The project is designed to produce 50,000 tons per year of cathode material of the LFP type (LiFePO4) in Chile, using lithium carbonate as an input, with investments estimated at a minimum of US$ 290 million. The initiative is expected to become operational by the end of 2025. In its investment phase, it plans to generate 500 jobs and in the operation it commits a training plan and technological training for permanent local workers, as well as cooperation in the field of technology transfer with the R+D ecosystem in our country
2023: Year of the EV Battery
As we pay greater attention to battery composition, expect to see automakers prioritize some of the major themes of 2022 – through investments in technology, partnerships and joint development agreements – all leading to a better battery.
That’s why 2023 will be the year of the battery, and we will see more automakers turn their attention to composition as the solution to a more affordable BEV. The use of silicon will play an instrumental role in “supercharging” the battery. In fact, from 2023 through 2025, there will be an increase in silicon penetration in the anodes of batteries (including lithium-ion) in new BEVs – with a significant increase in silicon-based anodes in batteries in coming years.
We can expect to see automakers prioritize some of the major themes of 2022 – investments in technology, partnerships and joint development agreements – all leading to a better battery.
A lot of automakers built their manufacturing platforms around Lithium.
In order for “early adoption” on newer technologies, it is going to cost big bucks to revamp the assembly lines.
5 - 10 years. The next phase of technology will be the injection into the market. Annnd I don’t know if Lithium will go away, it will be a secondary system, like gas is to battery now.
Don’t forget, Lithium by far has the greatest energy density, hands down to all others(except for nuclear).

Energy storage breakthroughs. You've heard it all before, right? And it is true that apparently "game changing" new technologies are being announced on an almost weekly basis. It's a sign of a rapidly accelerating market disruption that will see western societies move rapidly away from fossil fuel combustion by 2030. Now there are 3 more to add to the list - each of which looks set to change their respective sectors for ever.
Hopefully 2025, give me time to exit out a lot of the Lithium plays

“Natron Energy in the U.S. and CATL in China are working on sodium-ion batteries. At $960 per ton, sodium hydroxide is much cheaper than lithium. In 2022, CATL announced that its next generation of sodium-ion batteries will reach an energy density of 200 watt-hours per kilogram, which compares well with the 220 watt-hours per kilogram of current lithium-ion batteries. CATL's sodium-ion batteries could be as much as 75 percent cheaper per kilowatt-hour than lithium-ion batteries.”
“It’s going to be at least five-to-ten years before any alternative technologies can compete on cost with lithium-ion technology, Whittingham predicted.”
“If you go to solid state,” he says, “please don’t say it’s safer until we prove that it’s safer!”

In the space of 8 months last year, one of #CATL’s suppliers has built a #Gigafactory, ready to produce 110,000mt of #LMFP material per annum.
They plan to increase production up to 550,000 mt of LMFP, per annum, by 2025,
which overshadows their planned production capacity of #LFP of only (?) 345,000 mt annually. (currently 265,000mt LFP capacity)
This confirms the future production of cheaper and safer #EVbatteries, from abundant materials, especially CATL en route to 800 GWh by 2028.
Expectations are that up to 80% of US battery supply will involve Asian battery makers.
They are the hands that rock the EV cradle.
Awesome for #MANGANESE #mineralprocessing companies who will produce the required products in time.

SES: The Future of Lithium Metal Battery Technology
Every time I bye into a battery company I get hit.
This time will be different, AMPX and QS I will buy the dips..
QS is being tested in cars, not sure about ampx.
All my youtube people are doing videos on ampx. I chased ampx up all day and never got one share.
So, here I stand at my desk in after hours trying to get a small amount of shares. to follow on level 2
the chart is getting over bought.
I swear when I decided to hit the ask around 2-pm they rased it .30 in the blink of an eye. it kept coming down to my number one penny above. I must have pissed off the mm's today.
They are both up today.
Oh look they gave me 200 shares I over paid to get those today. I just got tired of chasing it. I hope I get a better price tomorrow.
Sandy and Gruber today.
Sweet video!
That is a huge concern in demand, when demand goes up there is usually quality issues.
And with Lithium you can’t risk quality, it has to be a tight run ship.
