The increase would raise Albermarle's production quota by close to 50%, from about 460,000 metric tons of LME currently.
To access the higher quota, Albemarle would need to prove its ability to use sustainable technology such as direct lithium extraction, consult local indigenous communities, and obtain environmental permits, CORFO said
Interesting that raw materials increases while finished product company cuts back.

Wow interesting for sure.
Leveraging this principle, Dr. Hlova’s team developed MELLT. This process involves placing solid spodumene chunks and a solid reactant chemical, such as sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), into a chamber with steel balls. The chamber undergoes various movements, subjecting the materials to rapid and repeated shear and impact forces. This sustained stress ultimately creates high-energy states within the chemicals, triggering reactions that result in water-soluble lithium compounds. These compounds are then extracted using a simple water wash.

Production yields are critical to cost competitiveness!
Using the new CRU Battery Cost Model you can assess the impact of factory yield rates and quantify the risk of a slow ramp rate. In the example below, I’ve modelled three factories in the USA with low (50%), medium (70%), and high-yield (90%) scenarios.
A low yield can result in increased production costs of almost +$60/kWh. It drives up consumption of materials, energy, and equipment.
Startup companies will experience low yields in a longer ramp-up period compared to experienced manufacturers. Subsidies can help, but their success in enabling cost-competitiveness will mainly depend on US and EU manufacturers achieving sufficient yields quickly.
Last month I spoke on this topic alongside several of my CRU colleagues in a webinar. Thank you Peter Ramsay for joining and covering this in this EV inFocus article: https://lnkd.in/e9vaFwvQ

You're now listening to the first episode of our latest initiative, the "Unveil the Future" podcast. Our mission is to bridge the gap between science and the public, making it more accessible and easily comprehensible for all. Our hope is that regardless of your background or interests, you will find something compelling in each episode as our esteemed scientists share their captivating stories. We are thrilled to have you embark on this journey with us!
To start off this series, we decided to go with someone whose story is a testament of how patience and passion can take you very far. Renowned for his pivotal role in the invention of the graphite anode, this man stands as a shining example of perseverance, dedication, and fortitude in the realm of scientific pursuit. Despite his groundbreaking work in creating the graphite anode in 1979, he hasn't received the recognition he deserves through numerous awards. In the debut episode of the "Unveil the Future '' podcast, we delve into the intellect of this visionary whose innovation resides within the smartphones so frequently used in modern society. Please join me in welcoming Prof. Rachid Yazami, Laureate of the 2023 VinFuture Grand Prize.
“When the pilot plant in Yokohama was announced in 2022, it was still said that it would go into operation in 2024 and that series production would start in 2028 – in both cases, it is now likely to be a year later.”

I am very pleased to publish an updated figure of merit for fast charging batteries, thanks to the new data points for Na-ion and LFP batteries recently contributed by Li et al. and Liao et al.
https://lnkd.in/eT4VKUpf
Now we have a complete suite of chemistries including NMC, LFP, Na-ion and LTO that are all capable of charging in 10-minute or less to 80% SOC. I see the following:
1. Balanced between energy density and cost, LFP battery stands out as the best choice for automotive applications. I see 90% of auto market shares taken up by LFP in years to come.
2. Na-ion battery must demonstrate 25% lower cost per kWh than LFP before it is commercially viable. This means $37/kWh for Na-ion cells as the current price of LFP is ~$50/kWh for prismatic cells. Thus, the meaningful direction for Na-ion battery development is cost-down or simplifications to get rid of any expensive materials such as oxide cathodes, hard carbon anodes, etc.

“Construction would commence following receipt of all required permits, rezoning approvals, and project financing activities.”
A bit mis-understood from the headline.
How much longer than, another year before all permits are received.

“A hydrogen tank system located behind the 15,000-kilogram truck’s cab holds 175 kg of fuel at 70 megapascals (700 bars) of pressure. Civilian anthropology researcher Lance Larkin at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) in Champaign, Ill., told IEEE Spectrum that that’s enough fuel for the fuel cell to generate 1,800 kilowatt-hours of energy. Or enough, he says, to keep the lights on in 15 to 20 average U.S. homes for about three days.”

Sodium-ion battery production costs continue to fall!
CRU's latest product, the Battery Cost Model, enables users to forecast where production costs for layered oxide sodium-ion cells could go over the next five years.
With falling hard carbon prices, Chinese cell production costs will fall slightly, being cheaper to produce than their LFP counterparts by around 2026.

Where this belongs is unknown to me, this is worth sharing, because this concept was brought up 7-8 years ago. The Senior Engineer at that time said, this is going to be the way of travel, surpassing gas and electric.
If they can make it cost effective, he’s right. This is the answer to the Green Space.

Auto pop up?!?! There are AI statements to predicted post?
It is really hard to know what China is doing. They are not held to the standards of white paper information(on their SSB’s).

Can’t get into the article, they want money.
But from the headline, that is so true.
Semi-solid state battery and true solid state batteries are what is being discussed here.
In terms of Semi-SSB’s. Those are what is in production and being made at the present. A lot needs to be ramped up in terms of mass production. Amprius and QS are the two I am invested in and that’s their first direction.
SSB is tougher, the manufacturing process is almost there and if I am not mistaken QS is the closest in that category. Amprius talks about their advances but there are lengthy processes to sort out.
Idemitsu Kosan, we will never know where they are in their manufacturing of the true SSB.
You have to wonder why, LG, Panasonic, Samsung, EVE, LISCHEN, JGME have never touted TRUE SSB, hmmm, they have been making batteries a lot longer then QS and Amprius.
But either way, those two stand to make a lot of noise when they are in full swing.

The question, when is that battery in production?
2027, my guess
While solid-state batteries are usually cited along with the 500 Wh/kg mark, the record 720 Wh/kg energy density of the new battery has been achieved with several technological breakthroughs.
"The all-solid-state lithium battery released uses a high-gram capacity, long-cycle lithium-rich manganese-based material for the positive electrode," tips Tailan, and adds that "in order to solve the solid-solid interface impedance problem... it is also equipped with Tailan New Energy’s unique high-performance oxide composite solid-state electrolyte."
Just as Elon Musk predicted, adding manganese is turning a very promising avenue for developing of high-performance EV batteries. CATL's M3P phosphate cells with manganese, for instance, offer 15% higher energy density than the LFP cells that Tesla uses in the Model 3 Highland.
“The pack offers 360 Wh/kg energy density with 95% solid-state electrolyte, and will be installed in retail EVs this quarter.”
This quarter, holy cow.
