Analysts: Garmin’s 2009 earnings will head south
Kansas City Business Journal - by David Twiddy Staff Writer
Tuesday, February 23, 2010, 11:23am CST
Investors will get a chance Wednesday to see what kind of holiday season Garmin Ltd. had — the company is scheduled to release fourth-quarter results before the markets open.
Eighteen Wall Street analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect the company to report quarterly earnings of 95 cents a share, a gain from 78 cents a share during the same period a year before. Revenue is predicted to be $955.7 million, a drop from $1.05 billion.
For the year, analysts estimated that Garmin will report profits of $3.04 a share on $2.84 billion in revenue, both less than a year ago, when the company reported earning $3.51 a share on sales of $3.49 billion.
Garmin (Nasdaq: GRMN), which is based in the Cayman Islands but has its headquarters in Olathe, still is the nation’s largest seller of personal navigation devices. Besides devices for drivers, Garmin also makes GPS-equipped products for outdoors enthusiasts, boaters and pilots.
Although navigational devices remain popular, tough competition has forced Garmin to slash prices. The sector also is feeling pressure from wireless phones, which increasingly include built-in navigational services for a fraction of the cost of a dedicated device.
Garmin has attempted to fight back with a wireless device of its own, the nuvifone, but its initial models have not made much of a splash. The company plans to roll out more advanced versions of the nuvifone, including one using Google Inc.’s Android operating system, later this year.
Last week, Dutch competitor TomTom surprised analysts with a $98.9 million fourth-quarter profit, which was higher than expected, and revenue of $723 million. The company said it saw a 15 percent increase in unit sales and a 21 percent decrease in average selling prices. It expects flat sales in 2010.
Oppenheimer Research analyst Yair Reiner said in a research note that the results actually bode well for Garmin because of the stronger North American device sales after two quarters of declines.
“At the same time, we think TomTom’s weak (average device selling prices) mainly reflect aggressive pricing and low-end product mix in the U.S., whereas Garmin should see substantially better results in both categories,” Reiner wrote.

Garmin® Grows in Outdoor Recreation, Adding New Oregon® Handhelds, Garmin Connect™ Compatibility & Free Custom Maps Utility
Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced the Oregon 450t and Oregon 450 touchscreen GPS devices, the newest of Garmin’s next-generation outdoor handhelds now compatible with the online community at Garmin Connect as well as Garmin’s free Custom Maps utility for transferring paper or digital maps onto your compatible handheld
“More than ever, Garmin offers intuitive touchscreen options for anyone exploring and enjoying the world around them,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of worldwide sales. “Oregon 450t and Oregon 450 provide a bridge between the slimmed-down Dakota™ family and the top-of-line Oregon 550t, all of which work seamlessly with Garmin Custom Maps in planning your adventure and Garmin Connect for reliving the experience and sharing the memories.” Responsive to the touch of a finger, yet resistant to the rigors of nature, Oregon 450t and Oregon 450 simplify navigation through a glove-friendly touchscreen interface. This bright 3” color display is easier than ever to read and use in all conditions. Other key upgrades include user-selectable dashboards, enhanced track navigation, high-speed USB for faster map transfers with your computer, photo navigation and the 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, which shows your heading even when you’re standing still, without the need to hold it level. The new dashboards give users the ability to customize the appearance of various pages on your Oregon, including the geocaching, compass, stopwatch and elevation functions. For hikers, cyclists and trail runners, the enhanced track navigation will prove especially useful. When navigating to a destination on an active track, users will see the changes in elevation ahead of them as well as where they’ve been. Also, waypoints and other key locations along the active route – such as start, end and high and low elevation points – now appear on the map and active route pages. The new Oregon units also include a barometric altimeter, paperless geocaching and wireless exchange of tracks, waypoints, routes and geocaches with compatible Oregon, Dakota, Colorado® and Foretrex® devices
Both units boast a worldwide shaded relief basemap, and Oregon 450t adds preloaded 100K topographic maps for the entire United States and state-of-the-art 3D elevation perspective. Coverage on the 450t includes major trails, urban and rural roads, interstates, highways, coastlines, rivers and lakes as well as national, state and local parks, forests and wilderness areas. In addition, you can search for points of interest by name or proximity to your location and view descriptive details for terrain contours, topo elevations, summits and geographical points
Customizing maps for your Garmin outdoor handheld – and downloading your activity afterward - were never easier. Through a few simple steps, Garmin’s Custom Maps can bring the details, labels and landmarks of your existing paper or electronic map to a compatible Garmin Oregon, Dakota or Colorado. Compatible with both PC and Mac, this free utility complements the myriad of mapping products already offered for Garmin devices, including City Navigator®, NT for turn-by-turn directions on city streets, Blue Chart® g2, for marine charting, and TOPO U.S. 24K and 100K map software for incredible terrain detail (each sold separately). The power of Custom Maps is exemplified through paper and digital maps labeled for specific events and purposes, such as a college graduation invitation that lists campus buildings; a roadmap of a parade, marathon, 5K or bike race; a park pamphlet showing trailheads; land-management maps of wildlife and game areas; or a historic illustration of an area as it once stood. To walk through the steps, to find and share maps and to join discussions about Garmin Custom Maps, visit www.garmin.com/CustomMaps
Experiences will live on long after the activity has ended, thanks to Garmin Connect’s newly announced compatibility with Garmin outdoor handhelds, adding an expansive new product line to the free-to-join online community of more than 17 million activities – with more than 38,000 new activities per day – for sharing, storing, analyzing and enjoying. Outdoor and fitness enthusiasts alike can share activities on Facebook and Twitter, export to Google Earth or relive the activity in table view, calendar view or on a variety of maps including our new embedded Google Earth view
This December 2009 update also allows you to: easily upload to and from next-generation Garmin devices; manually upload .gpx files; send any track found at Garmin Connect in Explore to your Garmin Outdoor device for navigation; and export activity files in .gpx and .tcx format to use on third-party applications. Learn more and join Garmin Connect at http://connect.garmin.com
Weighing only 6.8 ounces, the Oregon 450t and Oregon 450 last up to 16 hours on two AA batteries. Each device has a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFixTM, which automatically calculates and stores critical satellite information and can use that information to quickly calculate a position. The new Oregon models have 850 MB of internal memory and a microSD™ card slot for photos and optional map data, and you can store up to 2,000 waypoints, 200 routes, 5,000 caches and a tracklog of up to 10,000 points and 200 saved tracks. Geocachers can help the environment and be more efficient by going paperless with Oregon by quickly downloading cache information directly to the device. Oregon stores and displays key information such as location, terrain, difficulty, hints and description, so that you don’t have to tote printouts with you. Learn more about geocaching, getting started and going paperless at www.garmin.com/geocaching
Oregon 450t and Oregon 450 are the latest breakthroughs from Garmin, which has spent 20 years developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ lives, making Garmin a household name in the automotive, aviation, marine, wireless, outdoor and fitness industries. On watch for a buy in.
Would anyone buy call options on grmn at this point before earnings coming up?

Subject: GRMN ==> The next $$$MR. MARKET$$$ winner
It’s time for me to find another hidden gem. Where should I look? I need something to help me find my way. How about my trusty Garmin GPS? I love this thing. It takes me everywhere. I never get lost. It works great. I don’t like driving anymore without it. Everyone should have at least one.
Wow…that hit my over the head like a sledge hammer. Let’s have a look shall we? In doing another value dig, I searched for a stock that had:
• Dropped more than 70% in price over the last 52 weeks.
• Had a trailing 12 month PE of less than 5. Yes less than 5. Why buy something expensive in this market? I’d rather buy something that CAN’T go much lower.
• I want Year on Year earnings growth greater than 60%
• To show consistency, I want a 3 year EPS growth of 60%
• I want annual revenue growth of 40%
• I want return on assets in excess of 20%
• I want return on equity in excess of 30%
• One more thing…I don’t want any debt on the books…zero..nada…nilch.
Only one stock fit the bill…Garmin. GRMN
Today I bought Garmin at 15.74. I will sell it in 4 – 6 weeks at 18.26. Here’s why I like Garmin:
I am sure everyone knows the Garmin story. It’s a great product. It’s 3 biggest competitors are private companies. Garmin’s market cap of 3.3 billion is bigger than all 3 of its competitors put together (Tom Tom, Magellan and some other crap company). The reason I point this out is if the recession is prolonged, then these little guys are going to be the ones who bite the bullet first….not Garmin.
Yeah Yeah…who’s going to buy a fancy GPS in a recession (even though it makes a great Christmas gift)? I’m not going to argue that point, but the world is going to last a lot longer than this recession and men are going to continue to get lost driving and they will continue to not want to ask for directions well after this recession is long gone.
So…even if sales fall off. Remember, we’re looking at a P/E of 4. Garmin has a PE of $ for crying out loud. If Garmin’s sales go down to 1/3 of what they are now…and its earnings go down to 1/3 of what they are now, Garmin’s PE would only go up to 12. It would still be dirt cheap.
So please tell me..what company, who makes a great product, whose sales are growing by 40% and earnings are growing by 60% is going to have its revenues magically drop by 70%??? It’s ain’t happening.
This stock is oversold but its product is not. If you’ve seen one of these GPS’ in action, the first thing you think of is “Wow…that’s friggin cool”. Garmin even makes a dog collar with a GPS in it so your pooch never gets lost again (well actually, you go find the dog, he doesn’t find you using the GPS…but you get the picture).
Anyway, I feel really good about this safe bet and I’m ready to receive my finest meats and cheeses with this investment.
I am HUGE!!!
$$$MR. MARKET$$$
Could be. If people have jobs and disposable income this holiday season.
I think luxuries, big and small, will be the exception, not the rule this year.
Funny, this showed up on AOL's welcome window.
The Nuvi 880 is rated #1!
http://shopping.aol.com/electronics?ncid=AOLCOMMshopDYNLprim0001&icid=200100397x1210432967x1200647704
I don't think Garmin is tied too closely to the auto industry's problems. Garmin's business doesn't rely on factory installs. The market for portable GPS is still hot, because not everyone has one. It's getting there. Look around at a stop light some time and see how many Garmin Nuvis are on the dash.
It's also a way to cut costs when buying a new car. Most factory nav systems add 1500-2000 to the cost of the car. Why do that when you can get a Nuvi for less than $300 that has more features and is portable?
I guarantee portable nav systems will be hot again the X-mas.
I haven't bought any yet so, since you are probably correct, I'll hang on for a while and look for a bottom. Probably after the first of next year.
I'd short it if I knew how.
Auto sales are plummeting. Expecting this to go much lower in the coming months.
LOL! If you buy it will be a penny stock by the end of the week.
I haven't bought any yet either but am still considering it.
This has held up extremely well considering most of my other holdings.
Probably because I haven't bought any yet.......
GRMN is a great long term deal IMO if you can get it under $34
I don't know if GRMN has hit its low yet but I think that in the long term Garmin will take off again.
They control more than 50% of the market for GPS systems installed by car manufacturers and those are beginning to be almost standard equipment. Should be a common as sunroofs in a couple of years.

Pull up the details on it and look at the gross margin and net profit; add that to no debt and all we have to worry about is the economy and stagnant sales - lol.
About 70% off it's 52 week high. Might have to get me some.
Lookin' like a record month around here.... Too much spare cash on hand.
What better way to dispose of it than dumping it into this corrupt market. lol!
You did real good getting it down around $36, like you said it's a good stock for a long term hold.
FORBES
Garmin Ltd. (nasdaq: GRMN
This global-positioning system giant makes GPS units for automobiles, boats, planes, hikers and even dogs (in the form of a GPS-equipped collar). Based in Kansas, it has taken in more than $3.5 billion in sales in the past year and has a market cap of about $7.7 billion.
Garmin is a favorite of both my Warren Buffett-based strategy and my Lynch-based model. Buffett is an extremely conservative investor, so it's not surprising that he takes a good look at a company's debt before investing in it. The model I base on his approach requires that a company have enough earnings that it could, if need be, pay off its debts within five years. Garmin doesn't need five years to pay off its debt; in fact, it doesn't even need five minutes. The firm has no long-term debt, passing this test with flying colors.
As with Microsoft, low debt is far from Garmin's only attractive quality. Another reason my Buffett-based model likes the stock: its earnings history. Buffett likes stocks that have produced steady and consistent earnings over the long haul, and in that regard Garmin delivers. Over the past decade, the firm's earnings per share have increased in every year but one, rising from $0.18 to $3.89 in that time.
In addition, Garmin has averaged a 27.6% return on equity over the past 10 years. That easily exceeds my Buffett model's 15% minimum, an indication that the firm has the type of strong management and "durable competitive advantage" over its peers that Buffett looks for.
Like my Buffett model, my Lynch model is also high on Garmin in part because of its lack of debt. In addition, its P/E ratio (8.96) and growth rate (50%, based on the average of the three-, four- and five-year EPS figures) make for a 0.18 P/E/G ratio. That easily puts it into my Lynch-based model's best-case category (below 0.5), a sign that the stock is a very good buy at its current price. (You should be aware that it will be difficult for a company as large as Garmin to keep up such a high growth rate. Nevertheless, even if it continues to grow at half its current pace, it should be well off.)
I like it better at $36. This one is going to be a long term play since its products depend on a good economy when people are letting loose of disposable income.
Garmin is solid, no debt and an outstanding net profit margin. They now have a good dividend which makes it easier to hold for the long run.
Still a good buy at $46!
Garmin Chipotle's Christian Vandevelde...
had a tough day yesterday in the Tour. Had a small crash on the last descent but, rode very strong today on Stage 17 and is a favorite for the last time trial. Although after yesterday, he is now over 4 minutes off the leader Sastre, so probably too far behind. He really needed to pull up and stay with Sastre today and trim off 2 minutes.
Close race for the general classification top 5 leaders. Christian is overall sixth.
GL.
Garmin has been rebounding nicely this week, I'm still very long in this one!
Team Garmin Chipotle's
Will Frischkorn was in the breakaway today on the third stage of the Tour de France and finished second. Overall he is now third. They've got a good team although relatively made up of mostly unknowns.
Bought back in @ $43

Taking some profits here since Stochastic is peaking and will likely re-enter after pullback.
Garmin's been moving along nicely lately, they have some great GPS equipment available. Good long term stock IMO.
The price seems right...
but, is it? Don't know. Do I like it? Good question.
The value is there, that's for sure. I don't remember if/when it's traded at this multiple. But, without listening to the most recent CC, I don't have a feel on how all divisions are doing, as well as the company in general.
Instead, my money has been of late on RIMM instead, and some on AAPL. Been buying calls, and I'm not selling 'em as quick as I did my Goog.
GL.
I love it considering I liked it and bought in at like $70 a share. I would love to get in at this price.
Please check your PM..Thanks.
I had bought this at 40 and rode to 65. I just bought at 97 and am riding again.
They have great products I think they are a split waiting to happen.
biodieselmama
Aha, after today I understand why such a good company will sell for a cheap price some of the time. free fall on nokias deal today- which is a long term thing I dont see how it can really matter to grmns profits for a long time. who knows.
Part of the reason you're seeing GRMN doing so well is that the recent volatility in the market has driven a lot of money out of the more speculative stocks and into the "safe bets" if you will.
It's tough to bet against a company that has no debt, and earnings keep increasing quarter over quarter...
Fundamentally, not much has changed. Still a solid player, more aviation OEM's are buying into the G1000 and GFC700, sales in automotive are strong and rising...
If you held and rode this
for the entire double - then great job!
GL.
