Media companies make real $ from fantasy football
Friday August 11, 3:08 pm ET
By Paul R. La Monica, CNNMoney.com editor at large
Are you ready for some fantasy football?
With the start of the NFL season just around the corner, many Americans are getting ready to cheer on their local football teams. But a growing number of pigskin junkies are also planning to root heavily for individual players...even if they play for their favorite team's most hated rival.
Fantasy football, a "sport" that lets people draft teams of players and compete against other teams based on their players' real gridiron statistics, has become an increasingly popular pastime.
According to figures from the Fantasy Sports Trade Association - yes, this is big enough of a market to warrant a real trade group - there are currently between 15 million and 18 million fantasy sports players in the U.S. The number of players has grown 7 percent to 10 percent a year for the past three years.
About 85 percent of all fantasy sports participants play fantasy football, mainly online. And big consumer-oriented companies have taken notice.
"Advertisers are really keeping an astute eye on fantasy football. It's a very loyal market," said Scott Linzer, director of media with iCrossing, a digital marketing agency. "Several of our large clients are doing direct advertising for the fantasy football market."
Linzer said that marketing research has shown the average fantasy football player to be predominantly male, married, in a high income bracket and more likely to do research or make purchases online.
Most fantasy addicts have leagues set up on Web sites run by big media companies like Yahoo!, CBS, Walt Disney's ESPN and News Corp.'s Fox, which runs its fantasy site in conjunction with Microsoft's MSN.
Fantasy fanatics are real ad targets
So the increased popularity of fantasy sports could be a financial boon for these firms. There is real money to be made from people pretending to be NFL general managers and coaches.
In most cases, people can set up a league and play for free. Some sites offer premium fantasy packages for a fee that offer more services such as news, draft strategies (Should you take Larry Johnson, Shaun Alexander or LaDainian Tomlinson with the first pick? What a dilemma!) and scouting reports about individual players as well as real-time stat updates.
But several media companies are recognizing that it is more lucrative to not charge fantasy players since free games draw more traffic...and hence, more advertising revenue.
The biggest beneficiary by far should be Yahoo. Jeff Thomas, founder and CEO of fantasy sports site SportsBuff.com and president of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, said Yahoo has become the fantasy football leader because it kept promoting a basic, free service even when competitors were charging fees to set up leagues.
"The industry has gone back and forth between charging fees and being free. Yahoo was the one who primarily stayed free and that helped them gain a lot of market share," he said.
According to research from comScore Media Metrix, traffic at Yahoo's fantasy football site was more than twice that of ESPN's during last year's football season. Yahoo would not disclose how many registered fantasy football players it has.
But David Katz, who is the head of Yahoo's sports and studios divisions, said the company has seen steady growth for its free product and strong growth in its premium game. Visa and General Motors' GMC unit have returned as the main marketing sponsors for Yahoo's fantasy football.
"We're seeing significant growth in our ad revenue. Fantasy is driven by the fact that it is, was and continues to be one of the most engaged audiences on the Internet," Katz said.
Yahoo also stands to gain more users through a marketing deal with the web site of Sports Illustrated. SI.com no longer hosts leagues on its site and instead sends people to Yahoo. (SI, like CNNMoney, is owned by Time Warner.)
ESPN is looking to close the gap though. On their respective fantasy football pages, Yahoo held just a slim lead over ESPN last month, with 1.33 million unique visitors in July compared to 1.24 million for ESPN.
John Kosner, senior vice president and general manager for new media for ESPN, said ESPN's decision last year to introduce a free fantasy football service led to a five-fold increase in its members in 2005 and that numbers were way up this year. He would not disclose how many total registered players it had though.
The increase in players has also led to dramatic growth in advertising revenue. Kosner said that GMC, Samsung and DirecTV are sponsors for ESPN's fantasy football game this year while Coca-Cola's Coke Zero is the sponsor for fantasy football news and columns.
"Fantasy football is being wildly embraced by our advertisers," Kosner said.
And this year, ESPN is stepping up its efforts to increase its fantasy presence. It is launching a fantasy football TV show later this month that will air on ESPN2. ESPN also offers fantasy advice through its magazine, radio shows and podcasts. Kosner thinks that the breadth of ESPN's fantasy coverage gives it a leg up on Yahoo and other competitors.
"The power is in being at all these different media, hitting the fan everywhere he or she is," Kosner said.
CBS still believes in "premium" product
Still, not all media companies think that free fantasy football is the way to go. Steve Snyder, general manager of CBS SportsLine, said that it has "well over a million" users playing in paid football leagues. And even though CBS doesn't have as many members as Yahoo or ESPN because of its paid subscription model, Snyder said its fantasy site is still attractive to advertisers.
In fact, he said having people that are willing to pay for fantasy football has been a lure.
"Since we have a high-end audience, we've always had success with advertisers. Ad inventory for fantasy football has been sold out for years," Snyder said, adding that GMC, McDonald's, Budweiser, Toyota and Coke are big advertisers this year.
Nonetheless, free competition from Yahoo and ESPN has caused CBS SportsLine to begin offering its own free product as well. But the company also is trying to differentiate itself with new games.
Snyder said CBS is launching a free offering called Heads Up Fantasy Football this season that will allow people to draft new players every Sunday and make changes after every quarter of those games. (Think fantasy football meets day-trading.)
There appears to be plenty of room for small independents to thrive as well.
SportsBuff.com's Thomas said his firm has worked in the past with the Minneapolis Star Tribune and Chicago Tribune to create fantasy games as promotional tools that were designed to help increase their circulation and newsstand sales.
The fantasy sports industry also won an important legal battle earlier this week that should allow most leagues to remain free. A U.S. District Court Judge ruled that fantasy baseball leagues do not have to get licensing agreements from Major League Baseball in order to use players' names and statistics.
Some had feared that a court victory for Major League Baseball would have meant that smaller fantasy baseball league companies (and possibly fantasy leagues of other sports) would have to pay for stats, which would make it tough for them to compete unless they passed on costs to fantasy participants.
"The recent litigation news is a great positive for fantasy companies that have been around for more than a decade and put a lot of sweat equity into the industry," Thomas said.

Fantasy's 'rights' and wrongs
NFL sacks cable companies
The NFL, post Tagliabue
Disclosure: The reporter of this story owns shares of Time Warner through his company's 401(k) plan and is also a hopeless fantasy football addict. Go Brooklyn Brawlers!
Thanks for that spin lobogotti!
My thought is keeping the Manning/Harrison connection and letting either Barber or Smith go.
I've learned that it's not always good to have that combo on the same team, but this is the Colts!
Tiki is going to get a lot of receiving yards, on top of his rushing. i think he has a couple of good years left. who is going to challenge him, he is their go to guy.
smith is great, but the injury is mounting. harrison is wonderful, but wayne will be just as useful this year.
tough choice, but i would probably dump harrison
you got a P/M !!
And thanks for your input EZ2! Always glad to hear from others regarding choices!
That's what they said about Tiki last year too! :))
I thought you might bring Smitty's injury up.........thought about that..........and there is a little IFFY tucked in there, no doubt.
Seems like a ton of WR are coming up w/ H/string ailments this pre-season........more than usual !?!?!??!?!
I'm still holding to my initial choice ----- hopefully, someone else will chime in w/ some better rationale !!
Oh........did I say "Tiki is not getting any younger" !!
LOL
Peyton is a for sure...Have no problem in keeping 2 WR...it would be up to the draft for the RB...am worried about Smiths hammy injury.
All sources still pick Tiki a 4th/5th overall pick.
I think the quick reply is Tiki is the off man out !!
Why?
Not getting any younger.
Got a good side gig going on FOX and Friends.
Spending more time on things NOT football vs. other
Peyton/Smith would be #1 / #2
As long as there's Peyton.....there will be a Harrison
but.......if you keep 2 WR's ----- will your RB still be OK ?
Am in a "keeper league"... have my choices narrowed down to keeping 3 of these 4...T.Barber,M.Harrison,S.Smith and P.Manning... any help out there will be appreciated!
Martin may be out !!

OT: regarding Fantasy/MLB
Fantasy Leagues Allowed to Use MLB Stats
Wednesday August 9, 4:14 pm ET
By Jeff Douglas, Associated Press Writer
Judge Rules That Fantasy Leagues Allowed to Use Major League Baseball Player Names, Stats
ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Fantasy baseball leagues are allowed to use player names and statistics without licensing agreements because they are not the intellectual property of Major League Baseball, a federal judge ruled Tuesday.
Baseball and its players have no right to prevent the use of names and playing records, U.S. District Court Judge Mary Ann Medler in St. Louis ruled in a 49-page summary judgment.
St. Louis-based CBC Distribution and Marketing Inc. filed a lawsuit against Major League Baseball Advanced Media, MLB's Internet wing, after CBC was denied a new licensing agreement with the baseball players' association giving it the rights to player profiles and statistics.
Major League Baseball claimed that intellectual property laws and so-called "right of publicity" make it illegal for fantasy leagues to make money off the identities and stats of professional players.
But even if the players could claim the right of publicity against commercial ventures by others, Medler wrote, the First Amendment takes precedent because CBC, which runs CDM Fantasy Sports, is disseminating the same statistical information found in newspapers every day.
"The names and playing records of major league baseball players as used in CBC's fantasy games are not copyrightable," Medler wrote. "Therefore, federal copyright law does not pre-empt the players' claimed right of publicity."
The ruling brings some relief to more than 300 businesses that run online fantasy leagues and have awaited the outcome of the lawsuit. In fantasy sports leagues, fans draft major leaguers and teams win or lose based on the statistical success of the actual players in major league games.
It wasn't immediately clear what impact the ruling would have on existing agreements, such as the ones MLB has with CBS Sportsline.com, Yahoo Inc., ESPN.com and others. MLB also may appeal.
"My thought today is this ruling is pretty strong but if MLB wants to fight it they have the funds to do it," said Jeff Thomas, founder and CEO of the fantasy site SportsBuff.com and president of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association.
Thomas said SportsBuff.com's online fantasy baseball leagues have tried for years to reach agreements with MLB, but were unsuccessful and carried on without them.
Major League Baseball Advanced Media had just received the ruling this afternoon and was in the process of reviewing it, said spokesman Jim Gallagher.
"We need to talk to our partners, the Major League Baseball Players Associations, before we have anything more to say," he said.
Baseball's refusal to give CBC a contract for the 2005 season came as the league was making exclusive statistics licensing agreements in the fantasy sports marketplace that has grown to more than 15 million players.
Like many other fantasy baseball leagues, CBC had a licensing agreement with the MLBPA from 1995 through the 2004 season and paid 9 percent of gross royalties to the association. The company now believes it shouldn't have to pay for the right to use statistics.
Rudy Telscher, who represents CBC, said both sides had asked for a summary judgment before the case was scheduled to go to trial next month.
"Once you've won this here the odds are really good for us when MLB appeals," Telscher said. "I think once this issue is decided by an appellate court it's unlikely that other sports will try to take this to the court again."
Fantasy sports has grown at a rate of up to 10 percent each year, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association.
MLB had 19 license agreements in 2004, according to MLB Advanced Media, and just seven last season after a $50 million agreement with the players association giving baseball exclusive rights to license statistics.
Many of the smaller fantasy businesses, such as CBC, say they were cut out of the agreement.
Glenn Colton, a New York lawyer who wrote a friend of the court brief for the Fantasy Sports Trade Association, said the statistics licensing issue is critical to the industry.
"The idea on MLB's part is if you can scare all of the little companies out of the market," Colton said, "you can collect more money."

NFL chooses Goodell to succeed Tagliabue
By DAVE GOLDBERG, AP Football Writer
Roger Goodell, who never stopped rising through the ranks during his lifelong devotion to the NFL, was chosen by the league's 32 owners Tuesday in a vote that took only three hours to complete.
Favored for months to win the job, Goodell was the unanimous choice on the owners' fifth ballot, and said he expects to begin serving a five-year contract before the regular season starts.
"I spent my life following my passion," said Goodell, who becomes the league's fourth commissioner since 1946. "The game of football is the most important thing. You can never forget that."
The 47-year-old Goodell succeeds the man who groomed him for the job, Paul Tagliabue.
"We've had the two greatest sports commissioners in the history of professional sports, Paul Tagliabue and Pete Rozelle, and I was fortunate to work for both of them," Goodell said. "I look forward to the challenge and thank them again for their confidence."
The son of former U.S. Sen. Charles Goodell of New York, he worked his way from a public relations intern to perhaps the most powerful job in American sports, most recently serving as Tagliabue's top assistant, particularly on expansion and stadium construction. In 2001, he became the NFL's chief operating officer.
League revenues have skyrocketed during the 17 years under Tagliabue, who said he would leave his post after brokering new television and labor deals. The NFL will collect about $10 billion in TV rights fees during the next six years, and enjoys labor peace with the players' association under an agreement completed in March.
"Replacing Paul was not easy, and I think we've done a great job in selecting Roger," said Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. "The NFL is a complex business. Finding the right person to keep it on course was critical, and we did it."
Goodell beat four other finalists: lawyers Gregg Levy and Frederick Nance; Fidelity Investments vice chairman Robert Reynolds; and Constellation Energy chairman Mayo Shattuck III.
Goodell wasn't certain when he will assume office, although Tagliabue planned to leave the job this month.
"I believe in continuity," said Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay. "It's a lot like with head coaches, and that's what Roger brings us."
Goodell's election was much less complicated than when Tagliabue was chosen in 1989. It took seven months to select a successor to Rozelle. Originally, the top choice appeared to be Saints president Jim Finks, who was recommended by an advisory committee. But many of the newer owners would not back Finks, the choice of most of the old-line owners.
It took 12 ballots over a seven-month period — six ballots on Oct. 26, 1989 — to finally elect Tagliabue.
That wasn't the case with Goodell, who was chosen Tuesday in three hours of voting.
"The process was good in that it got everyone looking ahead and not just at the circumstances in their own city," Tagliabue said.
Tagliabue simply introduced Goodell as the new commissioner Tuesday night, then stepped aside as his No. 1 aide took the podium. Tagliabue soon will be headed on vacation to Asia, and Goodell will be running America's most popular sport.

HALL OF FAME game.................
CANTON, Ohio (AP) - All Art Shell asked to see in his first game back as coach of the Oakland Raiders was some progress.
He got that, and strong placekicking by Sebastian Janikowski in a 16-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night as the NFL preseason began with the Hall of Fame game.
Oakland forced five turnovers and Janikowski made field goals of 50, 51 and 24 yards
"Coming up with turnovers was huge tonight," Shell said. "They are reacting to the ball.".
Shell was rehired a dozen years after being fired as Oakland's coach. His mission: bringing back the glory of the franchise for which he was a Hall of Fame tackle.
In front of former Raiders coach John Madden, who was enshrined Saturday, Shell got off to a winning start.
"It feels really good to be back," Shell said. "And getting a win is huge, because no matter if it is preseason, everybody wants to win. Playing in this game, with Coach Madden inducted, it was very much a good thing."
Philadelphia's David Akers set a game record with a 55-yard field goal in the second quarter. And the Eagles' first-stringers were solid on both sides of the ball.
"It was good that the offense got a chance to get out there and get things rolling," Donovan McNabb said. "I felt healthy, so it's an exciting time right now."
Eagles RB Bruce Perry was carried off on a stretcher with 1:14 remaining, his head immobilized. He was tackled by rookie Timi Wusu on a running play. Players from both sides stood silently or kneeled in prayer before Perry was removed. Perry gave a thumbs-up as he was wheeled to an ambulance and taken to a hospital.
Eagles coach Andy Reid said Perry had a concussion and a team spokesman added X-rays of Perry's neck were negative. A CT scan also was normal and the team expected Perry to accompany it back to Pennsylvania.
"He had some loss of feeling in his arms and legs initially and the feeling started to come back," Reid said. "I don't know how far along he is now."
In his one series, McNabb hit all three passes for 29 yards on a 61-yard drive to Brian Westbrook's 1-yard touchdown run. McNabb is returning from sports hernia surgery that cut short his 2005 season, a major reason the Eagles finished 6-10.
"We came with a different attitude," McNabb said. "This is something that's serious for us. We were prepared to come out and have a good showing."
Westbrook, coming back from a foot sprain that cost him the final four games of 2005, had 32 yards rushing and a 14-yard reception in his short night.
"I think as an offensive unit we're out there trying to prove we can run the ball," Westbrook said. "We've certainly committed a lot of time to the running game and we did it out there in the first preseason game."
The Eagles made Oakland's starting defense look leaky in taking the 7-0 edge, and the Raiders did little on offense with their first-stringers until getting a break.
Three plays after Aaron Brooks' wobbly pass was picked off by Roderick Hood, Jeff Garcia returned the favor. The veteran QB, brought in as McNabb's backup this year, made a poor pass toward another Philly addition, Jabar Gaffney. Fabian Washington intercepted and sped 40 yards down the left sideline to the Philadelphia 23.
"I was excited at the time," Washington said. "But then I realized I can't take this into the regular season."
Lamont Jordan gained 14 yards on the final play of the opening period, then Brooks hit Courtney Anderson in the front of the end zone to tie it.
"I actually thought I wouldn't get it, but you never know unless you try," Anderson said. "I threw my hands up there and caught it."
Akers untied it with his record kick, breaking the 54-yard mark set by Dallas' Mike Clark in 1968 and tied by Atlanta's Bob Etter the next year.
Oakland's defense provided another superb chance in the third quarter when Grant Irons sacked Koy Detmer, who fumbled at his 13. But holder Shane Lechler bobbled the snap on an attempted field goal and Janikowski never got off a kick.
He did get off the 51-yarder in the third quarter to tie it, though. His 50-yarder early in the fourth period made it 13-10, and his 24-yarder finished the scoring.
^Notes: The Hall of Fame paid tribute to Bill Willis, the first black player in the NFL, at halftime. Willis was enshrined in 1977. ... Also on hand were the other living members of the Class of 2006: Troy Aikman, Warren Moon, Rayfield Wright and Harry Carson. The late Reggie White, who began his NFL career with the Eagles, was represented by his widow, Sara. ... Along with Perry, the Eagles had several injuries: guards Scott Young (right hamstring) and Adrien Clarke (back spasms); tackles Pat McCoy (concussion) and Calvin Armstrong (sprained left knee); and linebacker Greg Richmond (back).
