Roethlisberger Has Emergency Appendectomy, to Miss Opener
Sep 3, 6:42 PM (ET)
By ALAN ROBINSON
PITTSBURGH (AP) -Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had an emergency appendectomy after becoming ill before practice Sunday and will miss Thursday night's season opener against Miami.
Coach Bill Cowher said Roethlisberger will be evaluated each week, and he is not certain how long the quarterback will be out.
Charlie Batch, the former Lions starter who was 2-0 as a fill-in last season when Roethlisberger hurt his knee, will start against the Dolphins in the NFL's first game of the season.
The appendix attack is yet another medical setback for Roethlisberger, who nearly died in a June 12 motorcycle accident only to make a remarkably fast recovery. He missed no practice time during training camp and played better in the preseason than he did a year ago before leading the Steelers to their first Super Bowl victory in 26 years.
Roethlisberger missed four games last season because of knee injuries, one that required surgery, and injured his right thumb late in the season. He later said he broke it, though the Steelers never have confirmed that, but he missed no playing time because of that injury

Anyone play salary cap football at the Sporting News?
http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com/football/fullseason/ultimate/home.html
I got 5 teams there, I wouldn't mind having an Ihub league for the heck of it. It is low cost, but it would be more for bragging and stuff anyway :)
some big moves !!
The Denver Broncos have released Ron Dayne
The Houston Texans have placed Domanick Davis on injured reserve, ending his 2006 NFL season
The Cleveland Browns have released Lee Suggs
Last preseason game against the Packers,Palmer left no doubt in my mind that he can play QB!
If he's listed as the starter for week one,he'd be my QB.
If it were me................I'd take Palmer
Should I start E. Manning OR C. Palmer this weekend?? TIA...RJ
Living Wills........be careful in their use
While I was watching the NFL playoff games one weekend, my wife
and I got into a conversation about life and death, and the need for
living wills. During the course of the conversation I told her that
I never wanted to exist in a vegetative state, dependent on some
machine and taking fluids from a bottle. She got up, unplugged the
TV and threw out all my beer.
man, he looked awesome coming back off major surgery !!!
CINCINNATI (AP) -Carson Palmer aced the test.
With a brace protecting his rebuilt left knee, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback took the hits, avoided the rush and threw three touchdown passes Monday night in his first game back from the injury.
By halftime of the 48-17 preseason victory over the Green Bay Packers, Palmer had convincingly made his case that he'll be ready for the season opener.
"He hasn't lost a thing," right tackle Willie Anderson said. "He's our leader, and he's back. That's got to make any Bengals fan feel real happy."
Showing no hesitation to take a tackle or take off on a scramble, Palmer completed 9 of 14 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns. It felt like old times at jubilant Paul Brown Stadium when he pointed his right index finger to the sky after his second touchdown.
Eagles get WR Stallworth from Saints
By ROB MAADDI, AP Sports Writer
August 28, 2006
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Still looking to replace Terrell Owens, the Philadelphia Eagles acquired wide receiver Donte' Stallworth from the New Orleans Saints on Monday.
The Eagles sent veteran linebacker Mark Simoneau and a conditional fourth-round draft pick in 2007 to the Saints. The trade is pending both players passing physicals with their new team.
Stallworth, the 13th overall pick in the 2002 draft, had 70 receptions for 945 yards and seven touchdowns last season. He has 195 catches for 2,791 yards and 23 TDs in 56 games, including 32 starts.
"We're bringing in an experienced receiver that's coming off of a great year with the New Orleans Saints and he'll fit in nicely into our receiving corps," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He's got tremendous speed and quickness and he catches the ball very well. He's good with the yards after the catch."
The Eagles have been looking for an upgrade at wideout since parting with Owens, who had 20 TDs in 21 games with Philadelphia. The team considered trading for Javon Walker and had conversations about Ashley Lelie, but wasn't willing to give up higher draft choices.
Denver sent a second-round pick to Green Bay for Walker, a former Pro Bowl receiver who was coming off two knee operations. The Broncos got a third-round pick for Lelie in a three-team trade with Washington and Atlanta last week.
"Donte' is an explosive player who has had a very productive career with the Saints," Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb said. "I've said many times earlier that I like the skill position players on our roster, but realize that you can never have enough playmakers."
The 25-year-old Stallworth joins a crowded receiving corps that includes promising second-year pro Reggie Brown, longtime starter Todd Pinkston, rookies Hank Baskett and Jason Avant, and veterans Greg Lewis, Darnerien McCants and Jabar Gaffney.
The Eagles likely will carry six wideouts, so the coaching staff faces some tough decisions before finals cuts must be made by Saturday.
Stallworth, 6-foot and 196 pounds, is the type of receiver that can stretch the field for the Eagles. Among his career receptions, 45 were for 20 yards or more, while 12 of his TDs were from 25 yards or longer.
In 2002, Stallworth became the first NFL rookie in 20 years to catch a TD in each of his first four games. His eight TDs that season set a team record for rookies.
This season could have been Stallworth's last under contract with the Saints, who added depth at that position with the emergence during training camp of seventh-round draft choice Marques Colston and free agent Jamal Jones.
The Saints also appear ready to rely more on third-year receiver and former LSU standout Devery Henderson.
"We've got some depth at that position right now," Saints coach Sean Payton said, pointing out that Colston's progress made Stallworth expendable. "It's a good opportunity for Donte' to start fresh somewhere and it's an opportunity for us to acquire a pick as well as a player."
Stallworth had arthroscopic shoulder surgery in January, missed some offseason work and then missed part of minicamp after Payton sent him home for a day for missing a team meeting.
He ended up practicing mostly with the second team after that and also spent the early part of training camp nursing a sore hamstring.
"He didn't practice that much. I guess he didn't show enough to merit him staying here," Saints wideout Joe Horn said. "I'm not saying Coach Reid and Donovan can't pull Donte' aside and sprinkle some magic on him and make him a 1,500-yard receiver.
"He has some talent and it wouldn't shock me at all to see Donte' catching 10 or 15 passes a game from Donovan McNabb, but it didn't happen here in New Orleans and that's the sad part. They got a hell of deal."
Simoneau came to the Eagles in a trade with Atlanta in 2003 after playing his first three seasons with the Falcons. He started 16 games at middle linebacker in his first year in Philadelphia, moved to the weakside spot midway through the 2004 season and played mostly on special teams last year.
Simoneau even was called upon to fill in for injured kicker David Akers during a game last season and made one of two extra points.
The trade brought the Saints their second new linebacker in less than a week after Scott Shanle arrived in a deal with Dallas.
New Orleans had trouble stopping the run last season and those struggles have continued through three preseason games. In addition, Tommy Polley, working with the first-team linebackers early in training camp, has yet to play in the preseason because of a shoulder injury that required arthroscopic surgery.
"Mark was one of my favorite guys," Reid said. "He was a great person and tremendous player for us, on special teams and at linebacker. We just appreciate everything he did for this organization."
Sports Writer Brett Martel in New Orleans contributed to this report.
Greg Jones ~~ OUT !!
Jones of the Jaguars will be sidelined for the season with a torn ACL for the second time in the last five years. He suffered the injury Saturday night against Tampa Bay, and the Jaguars first reported it was a sprained MCL and he might be back for the season opener. But an MRI revealed it was actually a torn ACL on his left knee that will require surgery.

Lelie Had to Pay a Hefty Price for His Departure
Aug 24, 6:57 PM (ET)
By ARNIE STAPLETON
DENVER (AP) -Ashley Lelie's departure from Denver was a costly one.
Broncos coach Mike Shanahan confirmed Thursday that in order to be free from the final year of his contract, the recalcitrant receiver agreed to pay the Broncos a hefty sum.
The amount is believed to be $982,000.
Not counting players' days off, Lelie skipped 23 days of training camp, making him liable for $14,000 in daily fines totaling $322,000.
The Broncos also wanted Lelie to repay a prorated portion of his $3.3 million signing bonus, which would amount to $660,000 if divided by five (because his sixth year was voided when he reached certain incentives).
In speaking Thursday for the first time about the three-way deal that sent Lelie to Atlanta, T.J. Duckett to Washington and a conditional package of picks from the Redskins to Denver, Shanahan said at least as important as the draft day compensation was the money Lelie owed the Broncos.
"It wasn't really the pick as much as I just wanted to make sure that they knew whatever the prorated signing bonus was and whatever the fines were that that was going to be a hefty amount. That's a lot of money to pay back," Shanahan said. "And when that was agreed to, then we talked about compensation relative to what we should get for his services and we were able to do that."
Shanahan added: "We would not have released him unless he agreed to it and signed a contract to do it."
Lelie, who led the league in yards per catch the last two seasons, skipped the Broncos' offseason workout program, forgoing a $100,000 bonus to work out on his own in Arizona. He said he wanted out of Denver because the Broncos were misusing him and weren't giving him the chance to be the featured pass-catcher with Rod Smith and Javon Walker on the roster.
Shanahan reiterated his stance Thursday that Lelie would have been better off competing for the top receiving spot in Denver, where Smith is 36 and entering his 12th season and Walker is coming off a severe knee injury that cost him almost all of last season in Green Bay.
"I really believe somewhere down the line he got some bad advice," Shanahan said. "I don't think that was coming from Ashley. Ashley wasn't like that. He wasn't like that the four years here. I don't know why, to be honest with you. This happened even before we started talking to Javon.
"So, I just really can't figure out why he went in that direction, but I wish him well."
The Broncos acquired Walker in a draft-day trade with the Packers but earlier in the year they flirted with signing Terrell Owens and it was that dalliance that sparked Lelie's trade request.
"I'm glad it's behind us," Shanahan said. "I think it worked out hopefully good for both parties."

Coughlin: Manning Has Improved, Is Finding Alternate Receivers
Aug 21, 4:04 PM (ET)
By TOM CANAVAN
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -The days when Eli Manning stepped behind center for the New York Giants and wondered whether his mind was going to implode from information overload are over.
Entering his third NFL season, Manning is now the lynchpin of a multi-weapon offense that features Pro Bowlers Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey and equally talented receivers Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer.
"You can get overrun sometimes as a rookie," said Manning, the No. 1 pick overall in 2004. "You have so much going on, your mind is kinda overwhelmed. Everything is being thrown at you and there are days where you can't think anymore.
"Now it's more relaxed going into practice," Manning said Monday. "Whatever they throw at you, you know what to do. It's just a matter of seeing what the defense is and making plays and being competitive."
Manning made more than enough plays a year ago to lead the Giants (11-5) to the NFC East title in his first full season as the starting quarterback.
The offense's 422 points were the second most in franchise history and his 24 touchdown passes were the most by a Giant since Fran Tarkenton threw 29 in 1967.
With just a couple of days left in training camp at the University at Albany, coach Tom Coughlin said that Manning is throwing the ball even better than last season, when he hit nearly 53 percent of his passes.
Coughlin said that the biggest improvement made by the son of Archie Manning and the brother of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has been learning not to force passes.
"I think he has done a good job of finding a second and third (receiver) or a checkdown, even to a point where he has gone from one side of the field to the other and found a checkdown," Coughlin said.
Manning credits his improvement to being more familiar with the offense. Instead of having to read the playbook every day, now he just checks his notes or watches videotapes with the coaches to review his mechanics.
He also gets help in that area with daily reports on each pass in practice. It shows where he is hitting passes and where he is missing them.
If he is missing a lot to the left, for example, it might suggest he is not opening his body enough when he makes the throw or that his footwork is off.
"One of the reasons I have gotten here is I have worked hard from high school to college," Manning said. "I am not trying to outwork other people. I feel like after the day is done I want to feel I have done everything I could to become better.
"There is no worse feeling than having done something in a season or a game or whatever and saying I could have studied a little more or stayed after practice and worked on this throw," Manning added. "You never want to feel that way."
Guard Chris Snee said that Manning is responsible for a lot in an offense that requires him to call the audibles and find the middle linebacker every play.
"I don't think there is a guy on this team that has any doubt about his ability or the fact that he will put us on the right path," Snee said.
The hardest thing Manning faces is spreading the ball around on an offense where everyone thinks he should be the main target. Shockey and Burress don't hide their displeasure when Manning throws to someone else when they feel they are open.
Toomer senses Manning is more comfortable and confident heading into his third season, a year in which quarterbacks tend to take the next big step.
"You have to have a feeling you know that if all else is equal if he plays a great game he can put us over the top," Toomer said.
Seau RETURNS??
The way Junior Seau looks at it, he's now in graduate school.
Seau returned to the NFL on Friday after a four-day retirement, trading surfing in San Diego for a one-year contract with the New England Patriots that the 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker hopes will pay off with a long-sought Super Bowl ring.
Glory is fleeting ...
and so is retirement
• Mark Kreidler used to pull for the perfect ending for great athletes -- until he realized what a myth it is in sports. Now, he writes, Junior Seau is crossing into Last Gasp Territory. Story
• It's not the first time the New England Patriots have taken a veteran no one else wanted. But Len Pasquarelli says Friday's addition of Seau smacks of desperation. Story
"I'm going after my master's now," the jet-lagged Seau said in a conference call.
That was a reference to his lavish retirement ceremony Monday at the San Diego Chargers' headquarters when he said: "I'm not retiring. I am graduating."
The 37-year-old Seau said then that no teams wanted or needed him. But he didn't rule out coming back if the right situation came up.
Seau said the Patriots called on Tuesday. New England needed another linebacker because Tedy Bruschi has a broken wrist, although he's been out since July 31. Chad Brown and Monte Beisel also are hurt, and Willie McGinest, a mainstay of the Patriots' three Super Bowl titles in four seasons, signed with the Cleveland Browns as a free agent.
"When a championship team calls, you've definitely got to answer the call and definitely look into it," Seau said. "That's what I did.
"Obviously we understand where their focus is, to win championships," Seau said. "That's something that I'm missing in my career. I just felt it was an opportunity I needed to seize."
Seau made it to the Super Bowl in his fifth season, but the Chargers were humiliated by the San Francisco 49ers, 49-26. San Diego limped into the playoffs in 1995 before losing at home to Indianapolis in a wild-card game.
Seau hasn't been back to the postseason since.
He will be reunited with safety Rodney Harrison, his teammate for nine seasons in San Diego. The Chargers dumped Harrison after the 2002 season. He signed with New England and promptly won two Super Bowl rings.
"Rodney lobbed a couple of calls," Seau said. "He'll probably get a finder's fee."
Seau wasn't sure what role he'll have under coach Bill Belichick. But he's played both inside and outside linebacker, and he said he didn't go to New England to have a limited role.
"Wherever I fit is obviously going to be to their liking and mine," he said.
Last season at Miami, Seau played for Nick Saban, a Belichick protege.
"I've been through 16 years of this," Seau said. "I went through Nick Saban's playbook. There's some similarities. There's going to be some wrinkles and a learning curve. There's nothing that I won't be able to grasp."
Seau was asked about the prospects of the Chargers and Patriots meeting in the playoffs.
"I think that would be a delight for both Rodney and I," he said. "It would make for a great story, anyway.
"It was definitely a homecoming when I saw Rodney," Seau said. "Honestly there was a hug and some joyful cheers when we met. We have a lot of respect for each other. We've definitely seen each other grown up."
New England lost to Denver in the divisional playoffs last season.
The Chargers traded Seau to the Miami Dolphins in April 2003 for a fifth-round draft choice. In his first year with Miami, he started 15 games and finished second on the team with 133 tackles. But injuries cut short his last two seasons.
"Obviously leaving the last two years with injuries was not satisfying," he said.
Seau grew up in suburban San Diego and starred at Southern California before the Chargers took him fifth overall in the 1990 draft. He's played in 230 games -- the most of any active NFL linebacker -- with 227 starts and 1,724 career tackles.
Seau said his last piece of business will be to ask McGinest his permission to wear jersey No. 55.
"I definitely respect Willie and the franchise here," said Seau, who wore No. 55 at USC before McGinest did. "I'll definitely lob him a call and ask if I can wear his number. I'll respect him in that way."
Also Friday, the Patriots signed tight end Chris Luzar and released tight end Walter Rasby, an 11-year veteran.

CHENEY, Wash. (AP) -Seattle tight end Jerramy Stevens was expected to miss the next six weeks after injuring his surgically repaired left knee during practice Thursday.
An MRI exam showed that Stevens had torn the meniscus in the same knee that was fixed April 25. He was scheduled to have surgery Friday in Seattle.
The Seahawks open the season Sept. 10 at Detroit. Six weeks would be the end of September, and the Seahawks could give Stevens more time to recover with their bye coming on Oct. 8.
Leinart gets $51 million from Cardinals
WOW ~~~ you are a mind reader !!!
He (was) actually my #1 rated RB in all my pre-draft
work-ups. I don't have a high draft in any league...
but, if I would have....I would have taken him..ABOVE
L.J. / S.A. / L.T. ~~~~ I just figured this was going
to be a huge year for him (and it still may be) w/ Sanders
there and an increasingly strong passing game.
BUT........that's all changed now.....I have a draft
tonight ------ hoping he slips down to 11th !!!
8-)
i'll bet he is out at least 6-8 weeks or more.
i had the 4th pick in 2 drafts and passed on him in both. must have known something would happen. man i got lucky.
Clinton Portis - RB, Washington Redskins 08/13/06
Clinton Portis only had one run against the Bengals before attempting to make a tackle after an interception. Portis suffered what is being called a partially dislocated left shoulder while his x-rays came back negative on any bone breaks. The early prognosis is that Portis will miss the rest of the preseason and the problem could potentially exist into the season if rehab does not go well.
Didn't hear Portis went down, Samkon Gado went out with a groin injury yesterday in the 3rd Q. He was one of my sleepers this year. I picked him up last year he won a few games for me. I will read up on Clinton, I just checked my sites nothing yet up on Portis.
LOL ~~~ that's my "gold" pun !!!!
WOW ~~~ hated to see Clinton Portis go down in the Skins game........hope that's not anything too serious !!
