"Gates buys into ethanol"
According to an SEC filing, the Microsoft chairman holds a 25.5% stake in corn-fuel distributor Pacific Ethanol.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) – Bill Gates is buying into the ethanol business.
The investment vehicle for the world's richest man, Cascade Investment, has acquired a 25.5 percent stake in Pacific Ethanol, a Fresno, Calif., based outfit that distributes ethanol throughout California, Nevada, Arizona and Oregon.

hi my friend...hmmm
Mik, no mod here. lot going on with ethanol lately. downisde is threat of subsidies expiration. We need to research it. Got anything on it ?
mixed chart telling a story.
Sell the news ?
chart is in stall position. when news is out what happens?
What about CBAI, do you see anything in the cards (charts) for it this week ? Shouldn't it be ready to resume it's bullish trend ? Grand opening of new facility soon.

Magellan and Poet $4 billion deal in the pipeline
18 January 2010
In order to transport ethanol from the Midwest to the East Coast of the US, Magellan Midstream Partners and Poet are joining together in a venture to build a 1,800-mile pipeline.
The pipeline, which will take four years to build and cost $4 billion (€2.8 billion), will begin at ethanol production facilities in the Midwest and carry the ethanol all the way to New Jersey, depending on a loan from the DoE.
According to the two energy companies, the project will create over 50,000 construction jobs and 1,100 jobs when it has been completed.
Didn't that PEIX correction just happen from the previous new high ?
look fer peix to correct some. still a good one.
Yes I have been following much closer since peix has turned around. It's on the ticker stream on the afxm.com ethanol page. The barron's article with the PEIX mention as glassy posted is the only thing that I found. gas prices are going back to $3 this summer is what I heard today. also, there was a bumper corn crop this year. combine that with the hedgefunds investing, Valero buying ethanol refinerys and the gov't considering increasing the ethanol percentage in gasoline to 15%. Things are looking up for the ehtanol companies. I think the ethanol stocks are going to be getting a lot more attention here in the short term.
i see what you mean. thanx.

Look at this last coupla paragraphs about movment of hedge funds into this sector and why.
TALK ABOUT CLUNKER INVESTMENTS: Biofuel "opportunities" have been nothing short of disastrous for financiers both large and small. But this could change shortly with publication of the Environmental Protection Agency's long-anticipated Renewable Energy Standards, which will have the force of law.
The RES will require more production and use of ethanol and biodiesel and also set standards for a yet-to-be-built smart electric grid. The new standards are being vetted by the President's Office of Management and Budget to make certain they won't blow up the economy.
Tom Murray, global head of energy for German Bank West LB, a lender to the biofuel industry, said the equity of first-generation investors in biofuels has nearly been wiped out. Debt has suffered too. The reason: Production exceeded demand. Because of this overcapacity, a number of the nation's 180 biodiesel refiners have shut down. Exacerbating the refiners' woes, Congress allowed a production tax credit to expire at year end.
"It has been devastating," says Michael Frohlich, a spokesman for the National Biodiesel Board. Many of the nation's 180 biodiesel refineries stand idle, and more could shut down and lay off workers come February if Congress doesn't reinstate the credit by then.
"We're nearing a tipping point," warns Frohlich.
Ethanol's tax credit doesn't expire until the end of this year, and Murray says hedge funds are moving into that sector in anticipation of government-induced demand. They are buying debt and refineries at big discounts. Small investors also are stirring. Murray, who isn't an equity analyst and therefore doesn't recommend stocks, says equity prices of some publicly traded refineries are up, despite continued losses. He cites Pacific Ethanol (ticker: PEIX), which had been trading as low as 20 cents per share. It now is closer to $2, despite negative earnings.
i wonder what turned peix around? nice items.
from ibox, not much in it. no follow through here.
Ethanol
Ethanol is an alcohol-based alternative fuel produced by fermenting and distilling starch crops that have been converted into simple sugars. Feedstocks for this fuel include corn, barley, and wheat. Ethanol can also be produced from "cellulosic biomass" such as trees and grasses and is called bioethanol. Ethanol is most commonly used to increase octane and improve the emissions quality of gasoline
What is ethanol?
Ethanol is made by fermenting and then distilling starch and sugar crops -- maize, sorghum, potatoes, wheat, sugar-cane, even cornstalks, fruit and vegetable waste.
The benefits
Ethanol is a much cleaner fuel than petrol (gasoline):
It is a renewable fuel made from plants
It is not a fossil-fuel: manufacturing it and burning it does not increase the greenhouse effect
It provides high octane at low cost as an alternative to harmful fuel additives
Ethanol blends can be used in all petrol engines without modifications
Ethanol is biodegradable without harmful effects on the environment
It significantly reduces harmful exhaust emissions
Ethanol's high oxygen content reduces carbon monoxide levels more than any other oxygenate: by 25-30%, according to the US EPA
Ethanol blends dramatically reduce emissions of hydrocarbons, a major contributor to the depletion of the ozone layer
High-level ethanol blends reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 20%
Ethanol can reduce net carbon dioxide emissions by up to 100% on a full life-cycle basis
High-level ethanol blends can reduce emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) by 30% or more (VOCs are major sources of ground-level ozone formation)
As an octane enhancer, ethanol can cut emissions of cancer-causing benzene and butadiene by more than 50%
Sulphur dioxide and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions are significantly decreased with ethanol.
How does it work?
Ethanol is a very high octane fuel, replacing lead as an octane enhancer in gasoline.
Fuels that burn too quickly make the engine "knock". The higher the octane rating, the slower the fuel burns, and the less likely the engine will knock.
When ethanol is blended with gasoline, the octane rating of the petrol goes up by three full points, without using harmful additives.
Adding ethanol to gasoline "oxygenates" the fuel, adding oxygen to the fuel mixture so that it burns more completely and reduces polluting emissions such as carbon monoxide.
Ethanol and ETBE oxygenator, made from ethanol, are much safer than the toxic and polluting MTBE fossil-fuel-derived oxygenator used by oil companies.
Fact >
One acre of corn can pruduce enough ethanol to run a car for 72,000 miles on E-10 Unleaded.

I read something earlier this morning on google business news.
Oil world oil consumption is expected to NOT return to last years level for the next 5 years. sorry, dont have the url.
I have not checked ethanol stocks lately, been concentrating on closed-end funds. I think that the stemcells will pick up this fall. I have an ethanol Stocks DD page. http://AFXM.com/EthanolStocks.html
I don't have a message board link, want to exchange links ?
