Ensco Plc (ESV), owner of the world's second-largest offshore drilling fleet behind Transocean (RIG), announced this week that its second quarter profit more than tripled, boosted by its $7.3 billion acquisition of Pride last year and strengthening demand for oil rigs.

Quarterly net profit rose to $342.7 million, $1.47 p.s, from $102 million, 59 cents p.s., the same time last year. Revenue grew to $1.072 billion from $564.2 million a year before, with analysts on average expecting earnings in the region of $1.25 p.s., with revenue estimates of $1.08 billion. Right on the money.

Ensco will take Goodrich's (GR) spot on the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index shortly, a change scheduled to take effect as of Monday 30 July, 2012 after the closing bell. The contract driller will be added following United Technologies Corp.'s (UTX) $16.5 billion acquisition of Goodrich, an aircraft-components maker. The deal, one of the largest in recent years within the aerospace industry, closed Thursday after European Union regulators granted conditional approval.

Ensco owns and operates a fleet of 77 offshore units, including jack up rigs, drill ships and semi-submersibles. These units work in all the major offshore areas including the Gulf of Mexico, Africa, Brazil and Asia. It has been upgrading its fleet over the last few years, and has spent billions in capex since 2005. The company has built and put into service 16 units since that time and currently has six units under construction.

Here is some research.

Ensco (ESV) opened at $58.28 on Monday, March 19. The stock closed at $54.51 in after hours trading on Friday, March 23. This gives the stock a loss of $3.77 or 6.47% over the week. The stock opened at $56.99 on March 5. The stock thus had a three-week loss of $2.48 or 4.35% over the period. Ensco also went ex-dividend during the three week period. The company will be paying a dividend of $0.375 per share to investors who held the stock on the March 12 ex-dividend date. If we back that out of the period loss, Ensco shareholders experienced a gross loss of $2.105 or 3.69% over the three-week period.

Sterne Agee has issued a report raising the Price Target on ENSCO International (NYSE: ESV) from $65 to $70 a share.

According to the report, “Assuming a 6.5 multiple on the $3,200 earnings power outlook (circa 2014), the long-term price objective would be $80 per share. In the interim period however, we are assigning a $70 (previously $65) price objective which yields a multiple of 8.5x our 2012 assumptions.”

ENSCO (ESV): On February 18, U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman ruled that decisions must be made on five ENSCO permit applications by mid-March. However, the Obama administration is appealing the ruling. The administration has said that it may have to reject the applications if it is not given more time. An Ensco rig is also drilling Noble Energy’s Santiago well that received the first permit. As of now, ENSCO has a market cap of $7.90B, but this number will nearly double upon completion of its announced merger with Pride International. The stock pays a dividend of $1.40 (2.60%).

Ensco said today the deal with a Tullow subsidiary would pay $440,000 per day for work off the French Guiana coast, not including about 50 days of mobilisation and demobilisation when the deep-water rig would earn 75% of that rate.

"Cobalt now has additional time to secure permits in the US Gulf of Mexico before incurring drilling costs, and Ensco has gained a new deep-water customer in a new market," Carey Lowe, a senior vice president at Ensco, said in a statement.

The earnings from London-based Tullow will be more than double the special dayrate of $210,000 Ensco had agreed with Cobalt until the new rig moved to its first drilling area, Reuters reported.

The rig, which recently mobilised to the Gulf from the shipyard in Singapore, is expected to head to French Guiana early next year for up to three months after acceptance procedures in the Gulf.

Ensco, which completed a move of its headquarters from Dallas to London earlier this year, said the original two-year deal with Cobalt for the 8503 at a dayrate of $520,000 would take effect once the rig returns to work in US waters.

While the US government has lifted a more than four months long deep-water drilling moratorium imposed after this year's BP Gulf spill, new permits are stuck with the regulator, and few analysts expect any meaningful US deep-water activity until later next year.
