BioOil produced from biomass has been described as an "above ground oil reserve"—one that is renewable and non-depleting.
The potential volume of BioOil production from biomass waste around the world is very significant.
For example, one 200 tonne per day/65,000 tonne per year BioOil plant operating on a 330 day/year schedule will have the capacity to produce over 600 barrels of BioOil per day or over 200,000 barrels of BioOil per year. That is equivalent to about 100,000 barrels of diesel fuel per year.
To put that in perspective,
the forest industry worldwide produces over 100 million tonnes of waste per year which could potentially be converted into over 300 million barrels of BioOil. Canada's forest companies alone produce over 18 million tonnes of waste per year of which 6 million tonnes is just burned or land filled. That is enough waste to supply 100 plants at 200-tpd capacity and could produce 20 million barrels of BioOil per year.
Another example is the sugar industry.
Worldwide, the industry produces over 560 million tonnes of bagasse (wet) of which 280 million tonnes is estimated to be surplus or available for conversion into BioOil, the waste by-product from sugar production. That amount of waste could potentially produce over 400 million barrels of BioOil per year. Many of the sugar mills in Brazil produce up to 800 tonnes of bagasse per day—enough to produce over 500,000 barrels of BioOil per year.
Other agricultural wastes are also potential feed stocks for BioOil
including wheat and other straws, rice hulls, etc. It is estimated that over 350 million tonnes of these wastes are produced throughout the world including China, Europe, the Americas, Africa, etc.
These wastes could potentially produce over 1 billion barrels of BioOil per year.
