R&H, SKC to Form Electronic Films JV
Aug 14, 2007 (Chemweek's Business Daily/Access Intelligence via COMTEX) -- Rohm and Haas (R&H) says it plans to form a joint venture with SKC (Seoul) to develop, manufacture, and market advanced optical and functional films for the flat panel display industry. The jv will be formed through the spin-out of SKC business unit Display Technologies (Seoul), in which R&H will acquire a 51% stake. Total investment by R&H is estimated at $190 million. The jv is expected to generate revenues of $300 million in its first year of operation, R&H says. "Our current flat panel display business, which includes process chemicals and optical display films recently acquired from Eastman Kodak's light management films unit, features a deep product pipeline, solid R&D, and a broad intellectual property portfolio," says Yi Hyon Paik, v.p. and business group director/electronic materials at R&H. "SKC brings a strong and respected presence in the Asia flat panel markets, as well as outstanding manufacturing infrastructure, applications engineering, and customer intimacy," Paik says. The jv is expected to be created during the fourth quarter, pending regulatory approval.

Wednesday, August 01, 2007 01:01ET
TOKYO, Aug 1, 2007 (Asia In Focus via COMTEX) -- SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. (TSE:4005) said Tuesday that it will acquire CAMBRIDGE DISPLAY TECHNOLOGIES INC., a U.S. firm that develops materials for organic LEDs (light-emitting diodes), for about US$285 million, roughly 34 billion yen. * CDT shareholders with a combined stake of 43 per cent, including a U.S. investment fund that is the largest stockholder, have agreed to sell their shares.
* Listed on the U.S. Nasdaq Stock Market, CDT is involved in developing organic LED technology, which is also known as OEL (organic electroluminescence) displays.
