Clayton Williams Energy had the most interesting news after a report surfaced that the company had put itself up for sale. That report was actually confirmed by the company. Meanwhile, an analyst chimed in saying that, if a sale does go through, it would likely result in Clayton Williams Energy fetching a real big premium in a buyout.

But lots of oils have jumped up this month... very troubling as not much has changed...

Tough to choose which energies in this environ but really liking CWEI's portfolio. Sold a few shares yesterday and already this morning still have about 1/3 my original position don't want to get too greedy. Holding rest long term probably.

I am not in CWEI anymore. I think they have great assets but are not really doing anything with them now. They have been around a long time and, I agree will probably do well in a couple years.

WTI is going to lag for a long time. Cramer on MadMoney said USA does not allow exports of oil and they are training it to where ever they can find a refinery ( 2:28 video write-up worthless http://www.cnbc.com/id/102497092 ).

Nice close! The high dollar amount per share combined with the low float makes this one very fun to watch go up. I read that Mr. Williams owns 51% of the shares himself. Should be an interesting ride further up hopefully.

CWEI's pps could move up 7 fold

CWEI has the most potential upside based on its ratio of Cline Shale acreage to market capitalization. Potentially its Cline Shale holdings could cause the company's stock price to move up 7-fold; and that is without considering any other growth that it might manage during the next several years. It has 85,000 net acres in the Wolfcamp and Bonesprings areas of the Permian Basin. The Cline intersects the Wolfcamp shale. Plus it has over 1000 proven drilling locations in the Eagle Ford Shale. It has 100,000 to 125,000 net acres in the Eagle Ford Shale, which has already proven to be highly profitable. CWEI already has a good gross profit margin of 65.22%. As it develops its Cline Shale property, one would expect that to increase. Well costs should go down. One would also expect the Operating and Net profit margins to improve. Even so, its adjusted net income for Q2 2013 was $11.7 million. This was a very positive sign. It averaged 13,875 Boe/d in Q2 2013, which is very positive. This is a lot for a $643.5 million market cap company. For instance, Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp. (KOG) had daily production of about 34,000 Boe/d in Q2 2013. Yet it has roughly five times the market cap at $2.98B. In other words, it produced about half as much per dollar of market cap. This statistic makes one like CWEI, especially when you consider how prolific the Cline Shale is purported to be (better than the Bakken). The following link is to CWEI's Q2 2013 report. It is a buy, although it is a less strong company than FANG due to CWEI's greater debt load.

Both of the other two companies can also be considered buys. These are small E & P companies with a lot of growth potential. RRC is probably medium sized, but it has other assets which add further to its growth potential. These include already proved reserves of 6.5 Tcfe as of December 31, 2012. Getting oilier as it grows production in the Cline Shale can only help it be more profitable.

The two year charts of these stocks provide some technical direction to investors.

The slow stochastic sub chart shows that CWEI is near overbought levels. The main chart shows that it made a bottom in late 2012 and 1H 2013. It consolidated for long enough to give it a good impetus to go up. The Cline Shale development should provide that impetus over the next several years. CWEI is a buy; but most investors may wish to wait for an overall market pullback to begin buying. Alternatively one might decide to average in over time. It does have a lot of debt; and its EPS and net profit margin numbers are still weak. It could be hurt substantially in a bad economic environment. With the Fed recently lowering its economic growth estimates for the US for 2013 and 2014, an investor probably does not want to buy in on CWEI whole hog at this moment in time. Averaging in over the next year may be a good strategy. Still CWEI does have huge growth potential for anyone's portfolio.

The slow stochastic sub chart shows that LPI is at overbought levels. The main chart shows that LPI is in a strong uptrend. However, the uptrend appears to be overextended. It would probably be smart for investors to wait for a pullback before investing. Still the strength of the uptrend is encouraging.

The slow stochastic sub chart shows that RRC is near overbought levels. The main chart shows that RRC is in a weak uptrend. It has a lot of natural gas production. If natural gas prices fall demonstrably it will be hurt. It might be wise to wait for a pullback in RRC before buying, especially with the overall market overbought. As a bigger company, RRC's Cline Shale holdings are a smaller part of its portfolio.

The slow stochastic sub chart shows that FANG is near overbought levels. The main chart shows that FANG is in a strong uptrend. The fundamentals uncovered above tend to support the continuation of this uptrend. Plus stocks with strong charts are often what they appear to be -- strong. However, with the current market overbought, it might be a good idea to average in.

CWEI is inventory-rich so selling $400MM-$500MM of assets will not have a material impact on the company's drilling inventory.

As noted by the CEO Clayton Williams, there are 1,500 proven or nearly proven drilling locations which equates to about $7.5B in future capital spending.

Even at a pace of $450MM capital spend per year, it would take more than 16 years to drill the inventory.

Of that inventory, 750-800 wells are in the Giddings area, about 200 are in the Wolfberry formation, about 200 are in the Cline Shale, and about 200 are in the Delaware Basin (Wolfcamp/Bone Springs formations).

Clayton Williams (CWEI) is a stock I currently own. Clayton has quietly grown 140% over the past year. Clayton breaks down into two areas. The first is the Permian Basin, where Clayton has 198000 net acres. Clayton had an average daily net production in 2010 of 8319 Boe. Proved reserves in the Permian are 38 MMboe as of the end of 2010. Clayton has 254000 net acres in the Giddings area. Giddings proved reserves as of the end of 2010 were 11 MMBoe. Average daily net production in 2010 was 4144 Boe. Clayton also owns 12 drilling rigs, currently drilling in the Permian and Giddings areas. In 2010 this company's product mix was 74% oil and natural gas liquids. This was an increase from 62% in 2009. Clayton will be spending $381.8 million on exploration and development in 2011. In all, $295.3 million will be spent on the Permian while $80 million will be spent on Giddings. Overall, Clayton has two very large and lucrative areas to drill in Texas. Its access to drilling rigs is also helpful in increasing production. The majority of its production is oil, but the company has a large portion of its natural gas hedged.

Clayton Williams Energy (CWEI) is my favorite company outside the Bakken. This company has 166400 net acres in the Eagle Ford. Clayton purchased these acres in 1996, and purchased the acres cheap. The Eagle Ford is a low risk shale play with moderate return. Wells can be completed here for less than half the price of a Bakken well. Although Eagle Ford wells have a lower estimated ultimate recovery, lower costs allow the operator to make a profit more quickly. Management has done a very good job. Clayton has beaten quarterly estimates for four straight quarters. Clayton Williams Energy: Significant Growth Aimed at Oil Production is a more in depth article on this stock. Clayton's valuation metrics are:

Clayton is a very simple company; it's just blocking and tackling. Historically, Clayton was in the penalty box because it had a number of dry holes. That's changed in the last couple of years. It's been doing what I call 'just singles and doubles' — mostly just premium drilling and Austin Chalk drilling. These types of things have no exploration risk, in my mind.

If you look at where the stock is trading right now and go back to my old adage about a pure multiple, the stock would actually be closer to a $80 target. The discount is there because Clayton Williams and his family own more than 60% of the shares and the stock is pretty illiquid. Without the illiquidity, I would clearly say the stock is worth more than $85.
