NEWSDAY Executive Suite: Johan Apel

Since taking over as ChyronHego's CEO on Jan. 1, Johan Apel has been tweaking the picture at the broadcast graphics and data visualization pioneer. In that time, ChyronHego has acquired or taken a majority stake in two companies, and the company's share price has risen more than 25 percent.
Apel, 41, joined the Melville company in May 2013 when Chyron -- whose name is synonymous with broadcast graphics generators used in news and sports -- acquired Hego AB, a Swedish company where he was chief executive.
After a stint as president and chief operating officer of the combined company, Apel took the reins of ChyronHego with the retirement Dec. 31 of CEO Michael Wellesley-Wesley. Apel talked about ChyronHego's future.
How does your business break down geographically?
More or less half our revenues are U.S.-based and half are the rest of the globe.
What's your position in emerging markets?
We have a really good team in Latin America. Our business down there is growing fine. We're not that strong in Asia yet. That's a big opportunity for us. We're trying to expand in India as well, a huge developing market that we hope to penetrate in the next one to three years.
How do your product lines break down?
The traditional Chyron products are more or less half of our business and the other half is more related toward sports -- sports technology and sports data. Bringing sports technology from the Hego side to the U.S. sports broadcast market is a huge opportunity for us. The traditional Chyron side has been strong within sports in the U.S. as well. Over 90 percent of the remote production trucks in the U.S. have a Chyron installed.
Who are some of your marquee clients?
There aren't too many big brands we aren't working with -- ESPN, Fox Sports, NBC, ABC, CBS. We have a fantastic client base. MLB, NFL Network. In Europe, English Premier League is our client.
Your TRACAB System uses optics to follow the position and speed of players and balls on soccer, baseball and football fields. What's the next frontier?
We're taking our sports player tracking technology into basketball. One of the overall targets is to work with all the major sports in the U.S.
In April, you took a majority stake in the Norwegian company Zxy Sport Tracking, which attaches transponders to each player. What's the game plan?
The player tracking system that we have is optics-based, meaning that we put cameras in the arena and have algorithms analyzing those video streams and extracting the data. For some sports, it makes more sense to put a transponder on the player. Now we have both technology types.
Who uses this data? Leagues? Teams? Broadcasters?
All of the above. We work with teams, supplying them with data for sports analysis and development. It goes into digital applications like second screens and websites. It's used by leagues for referee evaluations.

Addition of SportsNet LA Completes Trio of RSNs at Time Warner Cable Sports Broadcast Center
By: Jason Dachman, Managing Editor
Thursday, March 27, 2014 - 3:00 pm
When a company launches three regional sports networks in the nation’s second-largest media market in just 18 months, it’s bound to learn a thing or two about designing a state-of-the-art production facility. For Time Warner Cable (TWC) Sports, which launched the Los Angeles Dodgers-owned SportsNet LA network last month, one lesson outranked all others: plan for the unknown.
“When we first went on the air in October of 2012 with the first two networks, we built a very efficient core technical plant,” says Larry Meyers, VP, content/executive producer, TWC Sports. “But we also knew that something else might be coming down the line, and we hoped it was going to be the Dodgers. So we specifically built the facility so it could scale up for that when the time came.”

A Very Busy Three Years for TWC
A lot has changed on the SoCal sports-TV scene in just three years.
It all started on Valentine’s Day 2011, when Time Warner Cable and the Los Angeles Lakers announced a 20-year, $3 billion rights deal that resulted in the launch of TWC SportsNet and TWC Deportes on Oct. 1, 2012. Three months later, TWC did it again — inking a 25-year, reportedly $7 billion-plus deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers to co-launch a team-dedicated network wholly-owned by the team and later branded SportsNet LA.
Network operations for all three 24/7 cable channels are up and running — with SportsNet LA officially launching on Feb. 25 and now ramping up for Dodgers baseball — out of TWC Sports’ El Segundo facility. The bulk of the base infrastructure for SportsNet LA was already present, thanks to TWC’s forward-thinking philosophy.
“When we first built our facilities [in 2012 for the Lakers-centric TWC SportsNet and TWC Deportes], we left capacity for the growth of our studio and operations,” says Mark Coleman, VP of engineering and operations, TWC Sports. “[So, for SportsNet LA], we were able to expand upon our existing footprint to relatively quickly and efficiently utilize existing production facilities and master-control operations.”
The Control Room
Diversified Systems, which served as systems integrator during the initial build-out for TWC SportsNet and Deportes, handled the facility expansion. The SportsNet LA facility now constitutes about a quarter of TWC’s full footprint and includes a studio set, production-control room, audio room, three edit rooms, and two live-event master-control rooms all dedicated solely to SportsNet LA.
“Since the core infrastructure was all in place, we just had to expand that rather than re-architect everything,” says Duane Yoslov, SVP of West Coast sales and operations, Diversified Systems. “If you design the infrastructure and overall capability to the maximum of what you might do, then expansion becomes an incremental expense rather than an exponential one.”
Like its two predecessors in El Segundo, SportsNet LA’s control room is built around a Sony MVS8000X production switcher and a Calrec Artemis Light audio console. Other gear includes an Evertz EQX router and Dreamcatcher replay system, ChyronHego graphics, Harris Broadcast (now Imagine Communications) test and measurement equipment, Genelec audio monitoring, Laguna Designs console and technical furniture, and an expanded RTS Adam matrix intercom system. Diversified Systems also provided a NewTek TriCaster to help SportsNet LA produce a variety of simple talking-head pieces.
The Studio
Inside the studio (designed by JHD Group) are Dodgers-specific signage and LED displays along with Sony HDC2500 cameras with Canon HJ series lenses, Ross Video Cambotics robotic camera systems, Autoscript teleprompters, Litepanels LED lighting (designed by Redwood Media Group’s Steve Mulkey).
“The set is iconic, with the architectural elements that are unique to Dodger Stadium — like the corrugated metal and the shape of the pavilion roof,” says Meyers. “Since this is the Dodgers network, we could build something that didn’t have to be all things to all people. It could be very Dodgers-specific. The interview set looks like the inside of the clubhouse, with a screen behind the desk that looks like the Dodger Stadium scoreboard.”
Expanded Online Storage
Diversified Systems also significantly expanded TWC’s online-storage capacity with new Quantum StorNext Q-series RAID systems and Spectra Logic LTO for archiving.
“We always knew that they would need to expand the storage,” says Yoslov. “But their storage usage had already grown dramatically in just the first year. We had to move the primary storage platform to Quantum and use their previous platform as more of a failsafe. So we had to move over 100 TB of data from their online storage, mirror that onto the new storage platform, and then do an overnight migration. That was probably the most challenging aspect.”
A Rapidly Growing Staff
It’s not just equipment that is new in El Segundo, with the tri-network operation housing a total staff of 250 (the number approaches 350 when freelancers are added in) after additional SportsNet LA employees were trained over the past few months.
“We’re operating rather independently coming out of the gate on the above-the-line side with producers, directors, editors, programming focused on SportsNet LA and the Dodgers or Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Deportes. But I think, as time goes on, we’re going to look at all these resources and skilled people as flexible and can be assigned to whatever of our networks they need to be assigned to on a given day.”
Watch for the second part of SVG’s SportsNet LA coverage addressing the remote-production operations at Dodger Stadium and the venue’s uniquely connected workflow with the Time Warner Cable Sports facility in El Segundo.

Fox Sports Regional Nets Ready for Expanded MLB Spotlight
By: Jason Dachman, Managing Editor
Friday, March 28, 2014 - 2:43 pm
The 2014 Major League Baseball season is a big one for Fox Sports Regional Networks. With the addition of live MLB games to the Fox Sports 1 programming slate, Fox RSNs will gain added exposure nationally and be tasked with creating synergies wherever possible. With an eye toward all 22 Fox RSNs’ delivering a national-telecast-level production, Fox has beefed up its resources in nearly every region with additional high-speed–camera and wireless-RF-camera systems, Viz Libero and ChyronHego Paint analysis tools, new mobile units, new studios, and more.
“Our goal starting two years ago was to make sure every home show was better than network-quality,” says Mike Connelly, SVP/executive producer, Fox Sports Regional Networks. “We believe we have done that and are really giving a network presentation every night of the week for our home broadcasts. Then, when [Fox Sports 1 production teams] come in and have a national broadcast, they can just walk into our truck and they’ve got everything they need.”
Super-Mo, Ultra-Mo Key to Fox RSN Game Plan
Super- and ultra-slow-motion cameras have become an integral part of the Fox Sports identity over the past decade, and the regionals continue to adopt the same principle more each year. This season, Fox will rotate a trio of three Vision Research Phantom v642 ultra-mos (up from one during the second half of last season) among the various RSNs.
“Mainly, we are looking for big match-ups, but we’re also looking for Fox side-by-side broadcasts,” says Connelly. “So we give priority when a Fox regional is next to a Fox regional. It literally is a game-changer in our broadcasts. We have gotten more positive response from that one technology than anything we’ve done in the last 10 years.”
Fox RSNs will also continue to experiment with Grass Valley’s new LDX XtremeSpeed 6X ultra-slow-motion camera, as several did during spring training this month. Fox’s mobile-facilities provider, Mobile TV Group, experimented with the LDX XtremeSpeed (capable of 360 fps) integrated with a Grass Valley K2 Dyno replay system during spring training in Arizona (on both Fox and Root Sports telecasts) and was so impressed that the company has already purchased two systems for its trucks.
“Right now, we are just testing one [LDX XtremeSpeed] at spring training in Arizona, and that will help decide what we are going to do in the future with it,” says Connelly. “We may start transitioning them into our everyday broadcasts if it goes well.”
Libero for All, Paint for St. Louis
Taking another cue from Fox’s overall production philosophy, virtual analysis and graphics tools will also play an integral role in the RSNs’ coverage this year. This season, every RSN with the exception of Fox Sports Arizona will deploy Viz Libero after Fox experimented with the virtual 3D replay and analysis tool at multiple regionals last season.
In addition, Fox Sports Midwest will have ChyronHego’s Paint analytical graphics and telestration system at its disposal for St. Louis Cardinal coverage.
“We put a system in St. Louis starting with baseball this year,” says Connelly. “So they will have a lot of ball tracking and virtual stuff to play with in the Cardinals’ broadcast.”
New Trucks Down South
Fox’s RSNs in both Miami and Atlanta will be rolling out new Mobile TV Group trucks this season (HDX34 and HDX35 debuted in November 2013 and March of this year, respectively). Both units are based on MTVG’s new two-truck dual-feed philosophy, which consists of a 53-ft. expando unit for the home-show feed and primary production operations and a B unit for the visitor-show feed and ancillary operations.
“We have really pushed [Mobile TV Group] to evolve the dual-feed technology,” says Connelly. “We’ve been doing [dual-feed productions] for 10 years, and we are now evolving these trucks. It is much roomier for the main production crew, and then, when the visitors come in, they have more room in the second trailer as well.”
Both trucks are the first of their kind for MTVG and feature a 7M/E Grass Valley HD Kayenne K-Frame switcher, Evertz EQX video router, Calrec Artemis Beam audio console, Evertz EMR audio router, five EVS XT3 replay servers, and 11 Grass Valley LDX digital triax cameras.
“Now, since we’ve lightened the load in the main truck, we can put more equipment in, and it can be more efficient,” says Connelly. “So we’ve increased the router size, expanded the audio [capability], added more EVS space — all so we have better coverage. We can do more pre- and post-game coverage inside of these trucks. And more [important] than anything is just comfort because those trucks were so tight.”
According to Connelly, Fox’s most recent RSN truck builds, for Fox Midwest and Fox Arizona, will be the last two single-truck mobile units. The two-unit dual-feed approach will now serve as the model moving forward.
Adding That At-the-Ballpark Feel
One of Fox Sports Regional Networks’ primary initiatives in recent years has been to capture the essence and ambiance of the ballpark and project that to viewers at home. For Fox, that has meant an increased use of RF wireless cameras in the stands, as well as on-site studio for pre- and post-game shows at nearly every RSN.
Fox received extremely positive feedback from teams regarding its use of RF wireless cameras in recent years to capture crowd shots as well as the ambiance inside the ballpark. As a result, Fox has deployed RF cams to an additional nine RSNs, so that nearly all will now have one at their disposal.
“They allow us to get inside the game and inside the ballpark,” says Connelly. “They just widen the coverage; you can do so much with them.”
Fox Sports Midwest is the latest RSN to add an on-site studio, in the ballpark-village area in left center field at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Notes Connelly, “Almost all of our regions have some sort of studio presence [at the ballpark] at this point.“

Q4 2013 revenues of $14.7 million, an increase of 98% when compared to $7.4 million for the prior year's fourth quarter;
Excluding revenues from Hego, with whom the Company merged in May 2013, Q4 revenues increased 23%;
Net loss of $3.8 million for the fourth quarter, as compared to a net loss of $20.0 million for the prior year's fourth quarter;
Excluding fourth quarter 2013 severance expense and a charge for the change in fair value of the Hego transaction contingent earn-out liability, net income of $0.6 million for the fourth quarter of 2013. This compares to a fourth quarter 2012 net loss of $0.5 million, excluding the $19.5 million valuation allowance for deferred tax assets;
Full year 2013 revenues of $47.4 million, an increase of 57% when compared to $30.2 million in 2012;
Excluding revenues from Hego, full year 2013 revenues increased 14%;
Net loss of $7.8 million for 2013, as compared to a net loss of $22.3 million in 2012;
Excluding 2013 severance expense, a charge for the change in fair value of the Hego transaction contingent earn-out liability, transaction costs and other one-time charges, full year net income of $1.7 million. This compares to a 2012 net loss of $2.8 million, excluding the $19.5 million valuation allowance for deferred tax assets.
"We are very happy with the results of the fourth quarter and the full year 2013 as the traditional Chyron business grew the top-line by 23% for the second quarter in a row and the Hego business grew by 27% for full year 2013," said ChyronHego CEO, Johan Apel.
Mr. Apel added, "We have successfully concluded the merger and our product lines are now fully integrated. At the same time, we have achieved the main targets of the merger to create a company with a more robust business model. We are also very excited about our recent gains in live sports production where our TRACAB Player Tracking System and Paint Sports Telestrator were used during Super Bowl XLVIII and our Lyric PRO graphics platform helped deliver high-quality graphics during the 2014 Olympic Games. Our focus will remain on putting cost-efficient, cutting-edge products on the market to sustain our growth."
Fourth Quarter 2013 Financial Results
Revenues for the fourth quarter of 2013 increased 98% to $14.7 million as compared to $7.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. Of this $7.3 million increase, $1.7 million was from sales of Chyron products and services, a 23% increase over last year's fourth quarter, and $5.6 million was from sales of Hego products and services.
Gross profit margin for the fourth quarter of 2013 was 63%, down from 69% for last year's fourth quarter. A higher percentage of services, which generally carry a lower gross profit margin than products, as a percentage of total revenues, resulted in the lower overall gross profit margin.
Operating expenses for the fourth quarter of 2013 were $13.2 million compared to $5.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. Research & development (R&D) expenses were $2.6 million, up 50% from $1.8 million in the fourth quarter 2012, primarily due to the inclusion of $1.2 million of Hego R&D expenses in the fourth quarter of 2013. Sales and marketing (S&M) expenses were $3.6 million, up 24% from $2.9 million in the fourth quarter 2012, primarily due to inclusion of $0.5 million of Hego S&M expenses and $0.6 million in expense from amortization of intangibles from the Hego merger, offset by a $0.4 million decrease in Chyron S&M expenses. General and administrative (G&A) expenses were $3.2 million, an increase of $2.1 million from $1.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2012. The increase was primarily due to inclusion of $1.0 million in Hego G&A expenses, severance expense of $0.5 million and a $0.6 million increase in Chyron G&A expenses. Also included in operating expenses for the fourth quarter of 2013, was a $3.8 million charge for the change in fair value of the Hego transaction contingent earn-out liability.
Net loss for the fourth quarter of 2013 was $3.8 million, or $(0.12) per basic and diluted share, as compared to net loss of $20.0 million, or $(1.17) per basic and diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2012. Excluding fourth quarter 2013 severance expense of $0.5 million and mark-to-market expense of $3.8 million from revaluation of the contingent earn-out shares related to the Hego merger, the Company would have reported net income of $0.6 million for the fourth quarter of 2013. Excluding the $19.5 million charge for the increase in the valuation allowance for deferred tax assets, the Company would have reported a net loss of $0.5 million for the fourth quarter of 2012.
Full Year 2013 Results
The financial results for the year 2013 include the results of operations for Hego and its subsidiaries from May 22, 2013, the closing date of the merger with Hego, through December 31, 2013.
Revenues for 2013 increased 57% to $47.4 million as compared to $30.2 million for 2012. Of this $17.2 million increase, $4.2 million was from sales of Chyron products and services, a 14% increase over last year, and $13.0 million was from sales of Hego products and services for the period from the merger closing date of May 22, 2013.
Gross profit margin for 2013 was 66%, down from 69% for last year, due to a higher percentage of services in 2013 revenues than the prior year.
Operating expenses for 2013 were $38.8 million compared to $24.7 million in 2012. The increase of $14.1 million resulted from inclusion of $7.0 million in Hego operating expenses, $2.3 million in Hego-merger related expenses, $1.0 million of restructuring expenses, $1.5 million in severance costs and a $4.8 million charge from revaluation of the Hego transaction contingent earn-out liability in 2013, offset by a $2.5 million net decline in other Chyron operating expenses. R&D expenses were $9.2 million, a $1.8 million, or 23%, increase from $7.4 million in 2012, due to inclusion of $2.6 million of Hego R&D expenses offset by a $0.8 million decrease in Chyron R&D expenses. S&M expenses were $13.3 million, a 2% increase from $13.0 million in 2012, due to inclusion of $1.2 million of Hego S&M expenses and $1.4 million in expense from amortization of intangibles from the Hego merger, offset by a $2.3 million net decline in Chyron S&M expenses. G&A expenses were $11.6 million, a $7.4 million increase from $4.2 million in 2012. Included in $11.6 million of G&A expenses for this year were $1.7 million of Hego G&A expenses, $2.3 million of Hego merger-related expenses, $1.5 million of severance expense, and $0.8 million in incentive compensation arrangements. Included in 2013 operating expenses were restructuring expenses of $1.0 million, which was spread among R&D, S&M and G&A operating expenses. Also included in operating expenses for 2013 was a $4.8 million charge for the change in fair value of the Hego transaction contingent earn-out liability.
Net loss in 2013 was $7.8 million, or $(0.31) per basic and diluted share, as compared to net loss of $22.3 million, or $(1.31) per basic and diluted share in 2012. Excluding restructuring charges of $1.0 million, Hego merger-related expenses of $2.3 million, severance expense of $1.5 million and a charge for the change in fair value of the Hego transaction contingent earn-out liability of $4.8 million, the Company would have reported net income of $1.7 million for 2013. Excluding the charge for the increase in the valuation allowance for deferred tax assets of $19.5 million, the Company would have reported a net loss of $2.8 million for 2012.
Net income (loss) amounts shown herein that are exclusive of restructuring charges, Hego merger-related expenses, severance costs, the charge for the change in fair value of the Hego transaction contingent earn-out liability and the increase in the valuation allowance, are not US generally accepted accounting principles basis net income (loss), and are reported herein solely to disclose the net income (loss) amounts that might have been reported had these costs and expenses not been incurred, as a basis for comparison between periods. Management believes that disclosing net income (loss) exclusive of such costs and expenses for the fourth quarters and full years 2013 and 2012 provides an alternative basis on which to compare results between the periods and an understanding of earnings that would have resulted in the 2013 and 2012 periods had these costs and expenses not been incurred.
Thank you good sir. This popped up on my scanner last week. Very promising future.
revenues should be 40-50% higher. Net may have some one time charges due to the former CEO and CFO retiring. Should be cash flow positive. Unless they have built up inventories for new wins.

MLB unveils revolutionary next-level tracking technology on defense
http://mlb.si.com/2014/03/03/mlb-advanced-media-defense-tracking-sloan-sports/
On Saturday, Major League Baseball Advanced Media provided a small segment of the analytical community with a glimpse into the very near future. At the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston, MLBAM CEO Bob Bowman presented a new technology that will enable the capture and reliable measurement of every play on the field, opening new doors for research and analysis. Think of it as PITCHf/x on steroids.
Like PITCHf/x, the new system — which does not yet have a name (personally, I’m calling it OMGf/x) — will be able to tell you the velocity, release point, spin rate and path of each pitch, but where that currently-in-place system ends (at least as far as the public is concerned), this one is just getting started. If a batter makes contact, the batted-ball speed, launch angle, distance and hang time will be tracked, as will each fielder’s first-step reaction time, speed, acceleration and route to the ball, and each baserunner’s speed and route. For an idea of what the system in play will look like, check out the video above of a spectacular, game-ending catch by Jason Heyward with the new tracking data added.
Where PITCHf/x and its lesser-known siblings, HITf/x and FIELDf/x, use a camera-based system from SportVision, the new technology involves a combination of cameras and radar. It’s been developed in partnership with Trackman, whose radar-based software is used for professional golf telecasts and was tested in connection with the expansion of instant replay; the camera portion was developed by a company called ChyronHego. As physicist Alan Nathan explained “Video is the natural technology for tracking players on the field… Radar is the natural technology for tracking the batted ball.”
This new data stream is expected to be real-time enough to use on broadcast instant replays
For 2014, the system will be in place in just three ballparks — Citi Field in New York, Miller Park in Milwaukee and Target Field in Minnesota — but the plan is to have it operational in all 30 parks by Opening Day 2015. In order to do that, several obstacles will have to be overcome, as Baseball Prospectus’ Ben Lindbergh explained in his graphics-rich summary of the rollout. The main one is processing power and data volume, as the radar system samples the flight path of the ball an incredible 20,000 times per second and the cameras record the position of every player 30 times per second. That results in a whopping seven terabytes (7,000 gigabytes) of data per game.
Currently, the system is still measuring a player’s center of mass, not his extremities. “In other words, it can tell you if a runner’s body beat the ball to the bag, but it can’t say whether he got his hand in under a tag,” wrote Lindbergh. Occlusion (when two players cross paths) can confuse the system, though when the computer has to guess, it gets it right “80-90 percent of the time,” and when it doesn’t, a manual operator can correct the record.
Beyond the obvious application of enhancing broadcasts, teams will be able to get more objective evaluations of players that could aid them not only for in-game adjustments to defensive positioning, but also for bigger-picture stuff like more accurately measuring the defensive value of a free agent for contract-setting purposes. Former general manager Jim Duquette, who’s now an analyst for MLB.com, described the way that teams might use such data:
“When you look at how scouting has been done in the past, there’s a lot of subjectivity to the evaluation,” he said. “Some guys I have found have varied, from scout to scout, in terms of their opinion of each player. There are a lot of quality defensive statistics out there, but they’re not completely accurate. A lot of them are dependent on somebody charting, whether it’s UZR or DIPS or Defensive Runs Saved, and they can only go so far. Some players … range to their left better, some range better to their right, some come in on ground balls better than others, some have better first-step quickness.
“The exciting thing about this new technology is, you can start to take the subjectivity that is given to you by the scout and blend it with raw data now, and come up with a truer picture of evaluating a player. So when you take that data and compare it to others in the game, you can really find out if that position player is the best at his position. You can measure potential free agents, you can measure current free agents.”
Bowman said that the technology will be available “for baseball operations and some fan use for 2014,” with baseball front offices and the commissioner’s office closely scrutinizing the data this year for accuracy. It’s a good sign that fans will be involved, both because it sets a precedent and because it can fuel further innovation. PITCHf/x data has been publicly available since it was rolled out in 2007, and its availability has been a game-changer for the sabermetric movement.
Via PITCHf/x, each pitch can be quantified and described, which lends a richness to game accounts; we can say with reasonable certainty that not only did a batter hit a fastball that was low and away, he hit a 91 mph two-seamer that was three inches off the plate and likely would have been called a ball. Furthermore, each pitcher’s repertoire can be aggregated and compared. Breakdowns of such repertoires started appearing at FanGraphs a few years ago, telling us (for example) that Ervin Santana threw his slider an MLB-high 36.9 percent of the time in 2010 with an average velocity of 85.9 mph, or that Justin Verlander’s average fastball velocity jumped from 93.6 mph in 2008 to 95.6 in 2009.
Had that been all that PITCHf/x yielded, it would have been a significant step forward, but further study has led to even more interesting applications. At BrooksBaseball.net, Dan Brooks and Harry Pavlidas manually review each pitcher’s repertoire (because some ambiguity exists when it comes to the pitch classification algorithms) and log the outcomes for each pitch, enabling the site’s viewers to see anything from the start-by-start variations in velocity and release point for a given pitcher to the success that batters had against the pitch when it was located in a given cell of the strike zone. At Baseball Prospectus, Mike Fast made a breakthrough in 2011 when he quantified the impact of catcher framing; shortly afterward, he was hired by the Astros, one of many sabermetricians whose demonstration of the value of his work in the public sphere led to a job in the industry.
Interestingly enough, last week, another catcher-framing analyst at BP, Max Marchi, announced that he had been hired by the Indians. Meanwhile, on Monday, Pavlidas and Brooks unveiled BP’s new catcher-framing methodology, which unlike previous attempts will be publicly available and updated on a routine basis. (An aside: Holy cow, that stuff is cool).
As PITCHf/x applications have flourished in the public sphere, fans have gotten only fleeting glimpses of its siblings, which have remained proprietary, available only to teams and a select group of top researchers. For example, before his hiring by the Astros, Fast published fascinating research involving the relationship between quality of contact and batting average on balls in play. Nathan’s HITf/x work on comebackers was used in setting standards for the new protective headgear introduced for pitchers.
While also announcing that PITCHf/x’s status beyond 2014 is to be determined, MLBAM’s representatives were less than definitive about the public availability of the new data. During the Q&A segment of the Sloan presentation, MLBAM Chief Technology Officer Joe Inzerillo said, “If you look at what MLBAM has done historically on this front, we’ve made a lot of data available and we’ve had really good collaboration with the community. I would expect that whatever policy we come up with as far as dissemination, it’s going to live within the boundaries and the guidelines that we normally have done.”
However, as Lindbergh added, “[I]t’s also worth noting that releasing nothing to the public—as has been very close to the case with HITf/x—is also within the boundaries of what MLBAM has done. And if they decide to do that again, they’ll be well within their rights.”
If this new technology is merely something that teams and broadcasters are able to use, it will be a solid hit, enhancing our knowledge somewhat with regards to the best and worst at various facets of the game. However, if this data is available publicly to drive further innovation that informs both the public and the industry, it has the potential to be a grand slam, a Mike Trout-level addition to our body of baseball knowledge.

Realfast,
What are you referring to when you say they have the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics, and what does this have to do with CHYR? Would appreciate understanding the post. Thanks in advance.
Was that reverse psychology?
They have the Super Bowl and Winter Olympics, and they are hiring again, today on twitter, for the UK Rugby/Football.
About page 15 in the presentation, it says MLB as a customer.
No vendor has been identified in the MLB press releases, so until I see one, it's still possible.
I believe Tracab is the tool behind Fox tracs that shows balls and strikes grid, replayed seconds after the pitch at the announcers discretion.
The Atlanta Braves have been using it for years (before the Hego Chyron merger). John Schuerholz of the Braves was on the committee for the Replay effort.
I doubt the rumor is true. Yahoo ID of that poster created today and only posts relates to this rumor, so most likely trying to get a jump in stock price for personal reasons.
Also, checked CHYR website and no news there. In fact, I don't think their technology has anything to do with replays, but player and object tracking, stats. etc. More designed to assist broadcasters.

The 30 Clubs of Major League Baseball have unanimously approved the expansion of instant replay, which will be in effect for the 2014 Championship Season and the 2014 Postseason. The historic announcement was made this afternoon, at the conclusion of MLB’s quarterly owners meetings.
mlb-logoBoth the Major League Baseball Players Association and the World Umpires Association have given their consent to the game’s new protocols for instant replay.
MLB’s new system of instant replay dictates which plays are subject to review, how instant replay will be initiated by field managers and how the review process will be conducted. As a part of the expansion of instant replay, Clubs will now be allowed to show all replays on the ballpark scoreboard, regardless of whether the play was reviewed.
“I am very pleased that instant replay will expand to include additional impactful plays,” Baseball Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig. “The new system will give managers valuable recourse in potentially game-changing situations. The opportunity for our fans to see more replays in our ballparks is also an important modification that the Clubs and I favored.
“I thank the Major League Players and Umpires for their cooperation with this change, which will serve our shared game well. I also extend my gratitude to John Schuerholz, Joe Torre, Tony La Russa, Peter Woodfork and Chris Marinak, all of whom worked extremely hard to make this highly complicated task a reality.”
Managers will have at least one challenge to use. If any portion of a challenged play is overturned, then the manager who challenged the play will retain the ability to challenge one more play during the game. No manager may challenge more than two plays in a game. Once the manager has exhausted his ability to challenge plays during the game and after the beginning of the seventh inning, the Crew Chief may choose to invoke instant replay on any reviewable call. Home run and other boundary calls will remain reviewable under the procedures in place last season.
A designated communication location near home plate will be established at all 30 MLB ballparks. There, the Crew Chief and at least one other Major League Umpire will have access to a hard-wired headset connected to the Replay Command Center, which will remain at MLB Advanced Media headquarters in New York. Major League Umpires will be staffed as Replay Officials at the Replay Command Center. After viewing video feeds, the Replay Official will make the ultimate determination of whether to overturn the call, based on the continuing standard of whether there is clear and convincing evidence.
Instant replay will be utilized during some televised games in Spring Training for the purposes of educating on-field personnel on the rules of the new system.
Other protocols of the new system for instant replay are as follows:
PLAY TYPES
The following play types will be subject to review:
Home run
Ground rule double
Fan interference
Stadium boundary calls (e.g., fielder into stands, ball into stands triggering dead ball)
Force play (except the fielder’s touching of second base on a double play)
Tag play (including steals and pickoffs)
Fair/foul in outfield only
Trap play in outfield only
Batter hit by pitch
Timing play (whether a runner scores before a third out)
Touching a base (requires appeal)
Passing runners
Record keeping (Ball-strike count to a batter, outs, score, and substitutions)
All other plays will not be reviewable; however, the Umpires may still convene on the field at any time to discuss the play.
INITIATION OF INSTANT REPLAY
Field managers may initiate replay review on one reviewable play per game by verbally indicating his intention to challenge, in a timely manner, to the Crew Chief. Guidelines will be established to determine whether a challenge is timely.
The manager may request that the umpire review multiple portions of the same play, but he must specify exactly which portions of the play he is challenging.
If any portion of a challenged play is overturned, the manager who challenged the play will retain the ability to challenge one more play during the game. No manager may challenge more than two plays in a game.
Once the manager has exhausted his ability to challenge plays during the game and after the beginning of the seventh inning, the Crew Chief may choose to invoke instant replay on any reviewable call. In that circumstance, the Crew Chief is not obligated to invoke instant replay if requested by the manager.
Home run calls that are currently subject to instant replay review will continue to be reviewed at the Crew Chief’s discretion. Managers may request that an Umpire review a home run call, but managers cannot challenge home run calls.
REVIEW PROCESS
Once instant replay review is invoked (either by the Manager or the Crew Chief), the Crew Chief will signal to the official scorer that the play is under review.
The Crew Chief and at least one other umpire will then move to a designated communication location near home plate, where they will have access to a hard-wired headset connected to the Replay Command Center in New York.
Major League Umpires will be staffed as Replay Officials at the Replay Command Center, located at MLB Advanced Media headquarters, for all Major League games.
The Replay Command Center will have direct access to video from most cameras in the ballpark in real-time, regardless of whether they are shown on the live broadcast.
The Replay Official will look at the video feeds and determine if there is clear and convincing evidence to overturn the call on the field. If the Replay Official overturns a call on the field, he will also use his judgment to determine where to appropriately place runners if the play had been called correctly on the field.
The umpires on the field will not have a monitor to review the play and they will not leave the field at any time.
The Replay Official will make the ultimate determination of whether to overturn the call.
On-Field personnel may not argue with the decision of the Replay Official.
CLUB ACCESS TO VIDEO
To determine whether to challenge a play, personnel in the dugout will be permitted to communicate with a video specialist in the Clubhouse who has access to the same video that is available to Replay Officials. This communication will occur via the dugout phone.
Both the home and visiting Clubs will have standardized technology to ensure each Club has equal access to all video.
No monitors or additional electronic equipment will be permitted in the dugout.
SCOREBOARD REPLAYS
Clubs will now have the right to show replays of all close plays on its ballpark scoreboard, regardless of whether the play is reviewed.

Updated: Tuesday, November 26 2013
Hanwha SolarOne will supply 42.5MW of modules to a series of projects in Ontario, in one of the biggest link-ups to date between the Chinese manufacturer and Q Cells, both owned by Korea’s Hanwha Group.
This autumn the administrator overseeing the carcass of a joint-venture established in 2012 between Germany’s Q Cells and Canada’s ATS Automation sold off seven construction-ready projects.
Canadian fund manager Fiera Axium snapped up four of them totalling 42.5MW, and hired Q Cells to act as EPC contractor.
Q Cells in turn has hired SolarOne as module supplier, with the four projects to soak up 170,000 of its HSC 60 Poly Can-Am panels, and construction slated for completion in early 2014.
SolarOne says it will make the modules in Ontario. A Log in to read complete article.

Hanwha Q CELLS increases production capacity to 1.3 GWp

In addition to adding a new production line, the PV specialist is looking to expand operations in rooftop markets and power plant solutions around the globe.

The Germany-based PV manufacturer is adding a 204 MWp production line to its Malaysian plant, where the increased production capacity will be fully ramped-up by autumn.
Hanwha Q CELLS is expanding capacity at its plant in Malaysia with an additional 204 MWp production line for the company’s high efficiency solar cells.
The company said on Thursday that the move would raise the production capacity of the manufacturing facility in Cyberjaya, close to Kuala Lumpur, to 1.1 GWp and total production capacity to 1.3 GWp.
After increasing the company's capital by $188.5 million in November, the capacity increase again underscores Hanwha Q CELLS´ positive business outlook for 2014 and its determination to become a leading player in solar industry globally, the company said.
"More and more customers in the international PV markets demand the unique combination that we have to offer: best quality products 'engineered in Germany,' complete solutions and services for PV systems and power plants and all that based on the reliable partnership with a financially stable company," said Hanwha Q CELLS CEO Charles Kim. "With regards to this heightened demand we increase our capacity in order to fulfill our customers' requirements."
The construction at the Cyberjaya plant began in December and the additional production line is scheduled to be fully operational by early autumn, resulting in approximately 70 new jobs at the Malaysian site, the company said.
Production will focus on the high efficiency solar cells for Q CELLS´ Q.PRO G3 polycrystalline PV modules.
"With the expansion, the Hanwha Q CELLS Malaysia facility will finally exceed 1 GW of cell production capacity, thereby ensuring a continuous supply of multi-crystalline high quality solar cells to our certified module manufacturing partners," said Seong Joo Ryu, managing director of Hanwha Q CELLS Malaysia.
"In addition, the capacity increase will enable our company to leverage even higher economies of scale, hence further improving our financial performance."
Outlook 2014: Business expansion in rooftop segments and power plant solution business
After a successful first full year for Hanwha Q CELLS in 2013, the company is set to expand its business in the residential as well as the commercial and industrial rooftop segments – particularly in its European home markets and in Japan. The company added that it would use its "strengthened balance sheet" to gain further market share in the power plant solution business in Europe, Asia and North America.
"Based on our experience of around 600 MW of installed power plant capacity, we offer complete and tailor-made power plant solutions and services," Kim stressed. "Our portfolio in this segment reaches from project development, to EPC, to operations and maintenance up to financing solutions."
The company said both the capacity increase as well as its planned business expansion underlined a positive outlook for 2014. Kim added that the group was "very confident to reach positive full-year figures in 2014."
It barely saves any money...It is probably just a flaw in their distribution strategy. That being said, the news you posted is good. The poor distribution strategy just allows us to pick up cheaper shares for a bit longer

MAKE MONEY WITH A PAYPAL ACCOUNT NO JOKE!!
This program has been seen on 20/20 and was even put in a famous magazine and Oprah also had this program featured on her show she proved it works you can make up to 50,000 dollars in two weeks by just using your PayPal account and if you don’t have a pay pal account you should make one immediately all you have to do is sign up for an account and it’s [free!!!!]This is one of the fastest programs I’ve ever seen work so quickly and its 100% legal
Do you need some extra cash? Would you like to make thousands? for the price of dinner at the 20.00 buffet you could make thousands of dollars in just two weeks by playing this wizard game I got interested in this because I love fantasy and everything right now in movies and tv is fantasy and plus at this game you can make a lot of money and there are thousands of people who love fantasy just like me so we can help each other by joining this wizard game and becoming the wizard king this basically about people helping people and have a lot of and fun and making lots and lots of money and I for one could use all the money I can get and helping out other people is great we can all help each other out and I also want to be the wizard king. This a perfect way to make extra cash and all you have to do is set up a pay pal account it takes 5 minutes and don’t forget it’s totally free and you should set up one right away. There is no limit to the income you can generate from this (you can do it over and over again) if you follow the instructions you can reach hundreds maybe thousands of people. Honesty, Faith and Integrity makes this system work. All you need to do is sign up for a pay pal account. Sign up for pay pal here: <ahref” https://www.paypal.com8#8221target=_blank” >paypal</a>. It’s real easy to set up and it’s free!!! So let’s get started.
1st send $10 to the first person (listed No.1) on the wizard list, by using the pay pal send money feature and be sure to include in the email payment for internet marketing game. This keeps the program legal. Then send another $10 to the 5th person on the wizard list (listed No.5) with an email that says payment for internet marketing 5. Once you have done this remove the first email address listed at the top (position 1) and place your email address at the bottom (position 5) then this moves the 2nd to the 1st, 3rd to the 2nd, 4th to the 3rd, 5th to the 4th. You now become the 5th email address. DO NOT TRY TO PLACE YOURSELF AT FIRST PLACE IT WILL ONLY REACH THE PEOPLE YOU SEND IT TOO AND THEN YOUR NAME WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE LIST. If you do this he way it has been designed it will reach thousands by the time your name gets to the top. Remember to send $10 donation to the first email address and the message payment for internet marketing wizard game, send a similar email with t with words payment for internet marketing game 5 with the $10 to the fifth person. This will help the 5th person to track the progress of the letter and to continue to send out more emails. Here’s the list.
Wizard King No.1 magicrayne@yahoo.com
Werewolf Lord No.2 witch66@aol.com
Vampire coven No.3 fairyland88@outlook.com
Witches Stump No. 4 forestdweller@live.com
Guardian King No. 5 dragon40@gmail.com
Make sure it’s the same email address that you use to open your pay pal account as this is the way you will receive payment. Now that you have paid the Wizard King at No.1 and the Guardian King at No.5 and sent them both an email (via pay pal account) and placed your email address in the fifth place as the Guardian King then all you need to do is post your letter. Once you start posting in 2 to 4 weeks you could make up to 50,000 dollars. That sounds great right? Now here is where you can post on craiglist.com, backpage.com, message boards and news groups. There are thousands of places to post. You can even send an email to your own email list.
It is your job as the guardian king (5th person on the list) to ensure that there are at least 20 payments for internet marketing replies. The 5th person is the guardian king of the system=you!!! If there is not at least 20 replies then the 5th person will keep sending/posting the letter until there is. Make sure you send $10 to the wizard king (No.1) to thank them for when they were the guardian king of the letter and e $10 to the guardian king (No.5) so more emails continue to go out.
Now the fun happens, (We reap what we sew) Other people will see your posting and do the exact same thing as you wait. Through the 4th 3rd and 2nd slots for your work as the guardian king to pay off, hundreds even thousands of others will be assuming the role of the guardian king and keep the program moving and making up to 50,000 is a great way to get to the guardian king. Once you have arrived at the Wizard king (1st position). It means hundreds and maybe even thousands have been working the program since you started. All of those people will then pay you as the first and you won’t believe the kind of money that has been generated. Seriously, it’s common sense you do it, and 25 or more people see and do the exact same thing and everyone wins.
You will receive thanks and the same blessings when your name reaches the first slot, 900 to 1500 people will send you $10.00 you could easily make up to 50,000 in 2 weeks. Keep in mind that the most you spend is $ 20, what goes around will always come around.
Testimonials:
I only have one thing to say. It was the best thing to happen to me since giving birth. Oh My God, I loved going through each position. I sent out 200 copies in total before twenty people replied, then in 2 weeks I had 48,000 in my account and the money is still coming in. Thanks to everybody for being honest and thanks to the wizard game for letting me participate and have so much success.
Lea Genson
Albany, NY
I was shocked to see how well the system worked. In 3 weeks I had over 52,000 in my pay pal account. It was the best 20 bucks I ever spent. P.S. I loved being one of the characters in the game.
Thanks, James Mison
Boulder, CO
Here are the step by step instructions again, so you too can make up to 50,000 dollars and have your own testimonial to tell.
Step 1: Set up your pay pal account if you do not already have one and send the top name, 1st person, $10. DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE PAYMENT FOR INTERNET MARKETING GAME THIS IS IMPORTANT AS IT KEEPS THE PROGRAM LEGAL.
Step 2: Send the other $10 and a note stating payment for internet marketing game 5 to the 5th name on the list.
Step 3: remove the top name and move the other 4 names up one place, putting your name at the bottom slot and if anything you will receive a minimum of $100 for your efforts.
Step 4: Keep sending/posting the letter until you receive 20 payments for internet marketing game 5th, replies in your mailbox.
That’s it, it’s that simple!!! Please give it an honest effort. You will not be disappointed and will be very glad that you did when it starts to work. Remember all you will be out of pocket is the cost of two six packs and will have the opportunity of banking thousands of dollars in your paypal account. TAKE THE SMALLEST RISK OF YOUR LIFE. The guardian system is based on honest people helping each other out. This program is completely legal, if you follow the step by step instructions you will be profitable so give it a try. Wishing you the very best of luck and may you prosper in fortune making big money in an honest way to success Good luck!!!

•Excluding Hego merger-related expenses, restructuring costs and a valuation adjustment for contingent consideration related to the Hego merger in second quarter results, net income of $0.8 million, as compared to net loss of $0.6 million for the prior year's second quarter.
Michael Wellesley-Wesley, ChyronHego CEO, said, "The second quarter was a pivotal quarter in the formation of ChyronHego. Having effected an extensive rebranding, we presented the combined company to our customers at the NAB tradeshow in April and received a very encouraging response. In early May, 2013, we eliminated a number of Chyron positions primarily in the United States, thus completing a restructuring initiative that began in 2012, and on May 22, 2013, we formally completed our merger with Hego AB to form ChyronHego. We've now been conducting business as a brand new company for just over two months. We have won significant new business in terms of product sales with BT Sport and ITV Regional News in the UK and major US and LatAm networks, as well as with US TV Station Groups. In the area of multi-year sports production services contracts, Hego announced its largest ever contract with the German Soccer League, during the quarter. I am optimistic regarding our business prospects for the second half of 2013."
Mr. Wellesley-Wesley concluded, "The strategic thinking underpinning the creation of ChyronHego is to create a market leading company in the fields of TV Graphics, Data Visualization and Production Services for 'Live' TV and Online News and Sports production. This merger creates a strong, global graphics company that is committed to innovation and to evolving existing products and services to support our customers in the future. Our second quarter financial results were inevitably impacted by one-time cash and non-cash expenses associated with the transaction. We anticipate that the compelling financial logic for the transaction will become clearer as we progress through the second half of 2013 and into 2014."
Second Quarter 2013 Financial Results
The financial results for the second quarter of 2013 include the results of operations for Hego and its subsidiaries from May 22, 2013, the closing date of the transaction, through June 30, 2013.
Revenues for the second quarter of 2013 increased 39% to $10.7 million as compared to $7.7 million in the second quarter of 2012. Of this $3.0 million increase, $0.7 million was from sales of Chyron products and services, a 9% increase over last year's second quarter, and $2.3 million was from sales of Hego products and services for the period from the merger closing date of May 22, 2013 through June 30, 2013.
Gross profit margin for the second quarter of 2013 was 68.4%, down slightly from 69.2% for last year's second quarter.
Operating expenses for the second quarter of 2013 were $9.2 million compared to $6.4 million in the second quarter of 2012. Research & development (R&D) expenses were $2.3 million, up 21% from $1.9 million in second quarter 2012, primarily due to the inclusion of $0.4 million of Hego R&D expenses in the second quarter of 2013. Sales and marketing (S&M) expenses were $3.3 million, down 6% from $3.5 million in the second quarter 2012, primarily due to inclusion of $0.2 million of Hego S&M expenses and $0.2 million in expense from amortization of intangibles from the Hego merger, offset by a $0.6 million decrease in Chyron S&M expenses. General and administrative (G&A) expenses were $3.6 million, an increase of $2.6 million from $1.0 million in the second quarter of 2012. The additional $2.6 million was due to inclusion of $0.3 million in Hego G&A expenses and a $2.3 million increase in Chyron G&A expenses, primarily due to Hego merger-related expenses of $1.6 million. Included in second quarter of 2013 operating expenses in connection with the May restructuring were severance expenses of $0.6 million and equity-based compensation expense of $0.4 million, which restructuring expenses were spread among R&D, S&M and G&A operating expenses.
Operating loss for the second quarter of 2013 was $1.9 million as compared to an operating loss of $1.1 million in the second quarter of 2012. Excluding Hego merger-related expenses and restructuring costs of $2.8 million, the Company would have reported an operating profit of $0.9 million for the second quarter of 2013.
Net loss for the second quarter of 2013 was $2.1 million, or $(0.09) per basic and diluted share, as compared to net loss of $0.6 million, or $(0.04) per basic and diluted share, in the second quarter of 2012. Excluding $1.8 million of Hego merger-related expenses, a $0.1 million valuation adjustment for the Hego merger contingent consideration and restructuring costs of $1.0 million, $0.8 million of net income would have been reported for the second quarter of 2013.

Moov wins BT Sport GFX deal
15 April, 2013
(missed it last month, found it in google search today)
GFX firm Moov has won a five-year deal to provide studio and post-production graphics for BT Sport.
The deal, which begins this month, will see Moov install live graphics systems, a cloud-based ordering platform and second screen integration tools in seven studio galleries and a graphics suite at BT Sport’s Stratford complex.
Moov has also selected ChyronHego as its graphics systems provider, with the firm’s BlueNet workflow system to be used for sharing content across the network and managed in the cloud.
Moov will install iMoov, a new service created by the GFX firm that allows production teams to use a web browser to build and share graphics before sending them to a studio playout or render engine.
Moov creative director Nevil Appleton said: “We were thrilled to be awarded this contract.
“The combination of Moov software and ChryronHego’s BlueNet solution will enable us to deliver a highly efficient, world-class graphics operation.”
