Do the new Nikon and Canon SLR's emulate film better than in the past? I was always a fan of the super low ISO films 25 50 and I believe 64 was another. 100 Was okay. That said, the detail always popped out better and the contrast as well. I wonder if some of these units with a full size CMOS work as well under bright studio conditions as the old low ISO films did. They do very well under low light conditions with smaller a CMOS.

LOL LisaMarie - The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4L is a nice lens and it's so important to have excellent glass. IMO that's where the majority of money needs to go when purchasing your gear for the first time.

Just wait until you get the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L it's one of my favorite lenses.

Hey ChrisH! My latest purchases are the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 and
the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8.....both are great starter lenses for me and
I was hoping to test them out at Piedmont Park in Atlanta but
it was raining when I had some free time.

The others I'd like to add to my camera bag are:

Canon's PowerShot G9 a Punch

Canon (CAJ) introduced the PowerShot G9 late last year as a near-identical replacement to its G7 predecessor, albeit heeding customer feedback with a feature set that places it squarely in the category of compact replacements for high-end digital cameras.

With 23 shooting modes, the G9 is really meant for photo enthusiasts who prefer to manipulate images on a computer. Despite looking and feeling like a formidable camera, the G9 is perfect for everyday use by anyone who wants a simple point-and-shoot with enough resolution to produce poster-size prints. The G9, a compact 13 oz., captures 12 megapixels of detail with a six-times optical zoom lens.

At $500, it's pricier than many seemingly comparable cameras, but few have such a wide range of features. In fact, the G9 has so many features and functions that the instruction manual looks like a small paperback novel. You could literally spend an hour setting up a single shot. For instance, the "My Colors" feature lets you specify vivid, neutral, sepia, black and white, lighter skin, or darker skin. And within "vivid," you can choose vivid blue, vivid red, vivid green, or delve deeper for even more customization. Other shooting options include user-selected focus zones, manual exposure settings, flash exposure compensation, light metering, video recording, and a two-hour voice memo recorder.

RESPONSIVE OPTIONS
Not everyone will appreciate, or even use, many of these functions on a regular basis. But most will appreciate the G9's built-in sensors, which detect the tiny shakes in your hand while you're lining up a shot. Using these sensors, the camera shifts the lens elements in an attempt to keep those shakes from blurring the picture. Comparable cameras from Nikon (NINOF) and Sony (SNE) also offer this relatively new image-stabilization technology. It's a great addition, though not foolproof. About 75% of the time, the pictures I thought were taken in perfectly still situations came out blur-free. That's a bit above average from what I've seen with other cameras (though it also suggests I may drink too much coffee).

The G9 has a speedy, responsive processor that focuses quickly on objects. During a recent trip to Spain, many of the photos I took in Barcelona came out exactly as I remembered the locations. On that trip I also took shots with a higher-end Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. With the exception of some superb image-stabilized telephoto shots from the EOS, I couldn't see much difference in the G9's photos once I downloaded the images to a computer.

FORM AND FUNCTION
The camera is encased in a black-metal housing. The zoom lens on the front sits behind its own protective covering. The top of the camera has a shoe for an external flash, and the back is dominated by a 3-inch color LCD screen, up from 2.5 inch on the G7. This display offers a neat feature that senses low-light situations and automatically adjusts the contrast.

Above the screen is a regular viewfinder with an odd design flaw: Looking through it, you can see the barrel of the extended zoom lens. Nowadays, of course, many people simply look at the color screen and never use the viewfinder, if the camera has one at all. This visual distraction also doesn't affect the photo, so I suspect few users will be as bothered as I was.

Another nice addition is face-detection technology, an increasingly common feature. Without this technology, which tracks up to nine people in a shot, some parts of the photos are bound to be out of focus. But with it, the G9 automatically adjusts the exposure speed, focus, and flash for an optimal picture. Canon ups the ante by giving users the ability to designate a particular face to make sure that one remains in focus regardless—a feature that's so cool, and works so easily, it makes me wonder why nobody thought of it sooner.

One of Canon's responses to customer feedback was to add "RAW" format shooting. For those unfamiliar with it, pictures shot in RAW are not processed down into the more familiar JPEG format. Instead, the image data are captured directly from the camera's sensors and left unprocessed, creating the equivalent of digital negatives. The downside is that RAW photos take up a devilish amount of memory. But with RAW, you can tinker with picture elements such as white balance and color grading in an editing program.

DIGITAL NEGATIVE
While the G9 was a dream to use in the field, I struggled to get it to work with my computer. Neither of the SD memory cards I had used in the camera were recognized when I slipped them into my Dell (DELL) desktop computer or Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) laptop. And when I left the card in the camera and tried connecting it directly to the Dell via USB cable, I kept getting error messages on the PC saying the device wasn't recognized. Only after I installed Canon's software would the two computers recognize the camera, but they still couldn't read the memory cards directly (though my Panasonic TV, which has a memory card slot, pulled up the images without a hitch).

The PowerShot G9 may be more camera than you'll ever need, but it has so many functions that you won't be caught short if you'd like to try something more sophisticated. For a couple hundred dollars more than your standard point-and-shoot, the G9 gives you almost all the power of a digital SLR in your pocket.

Canon Broadcast and Communications Division Announcements:

New HD Studio Lenses and Auto Focus
New this year are Canon's DIGISUPER 27 HD studio lens (model XJ27x6.5B IE-D) and DIGISUPER 27 AF HD studio lens (model XJ27x6.5B AF), which feature studio-optimized autofocus capabilities based on a proprietary HD implementation of Through-the-Lens Secondary Image Registration Phase Detection Method technology (also used on Canon's DIGISUPER 100AF and DIGISUPER 86AF HD field lenses). The DIGISUPER 27AF HD studio lens enables camera operators or robotic systems to achieve exact focus each and every time.

Remote Control Robotic HD Camera
Canon is introducing its new BU-45H remote-control robotic pan-tilt 16:9 HD camera system at the 2008 NAB Show to address such specialized HD applications as POV (point-of-view) cameras for traffic and weather monitoring, houses of worship, legislative chambers, high-resolution outdoor security installations, remote-controlled Web cameras, and more. The new BU-45H remote-control robotic pan-tilt 16:9 HD camera features a Canon HD camera equipped with three 1/3 inch (1,670,000-pixel) CCDs, a Genuine Canon HD zoom lens with 20X optical zoom ratio (4.5 - 90mm), a remote-control ND (neutral density) filter, genlock input, HD-SDI/SD-SDI output with embedded audio or standard-definition composite NTSC, a Canon autofocus function, and Canon's sophisticated Image Stabilizer technology.

HDgc Portable HD Lenses
Responding to the introduction of lower-cost tapeless HD ENG cameras from all major manufacturers, Canon's new HDgc line of cost-effective portable HD lenses for 1/2 inch, 2/3 inch, and 1/3 inch imagers will also be on display at the 2008 NAB Show. Sixteen different models comprise Canon's HDgc line, with three tiers of quality: the higher-end eDrive Series, the middle-range Economical Series, and the basic Remote-Control Series. The higher-end eDrive Series of HDgc lenses are designed for cameras with 2/3 inch imagers and include a built-in 2x extender and Canon's digital eDrive feature, which enables users to program such functions as zoom and focus settings into the lens for precise, automated repeatability.

HDxs Portable, Studio and Field Lenses
The full line of Canon's high-performance HDxs field lenses (including the DIGISUPER models mentioned above), HDxs studio lenses, eHDxs and HDgc ENG/EFP portable lenses will also be on display at the 2008 NAB Show. The HDxs studio lens category includes the industry's first-ever Compact Studio Lens, the DIGISUPER 22xs (model XJ22x7.3BIE-D), which provides the superior HD optical performance of a large "box-style" HD lens in an extremely compact (13.4 lb.) design appropriate for portable HD cameras configured for studio use. Other Canon HDxs studio lenses include the popular compact DIGISUPER 25xs (XJ25x6.8B IE-D) and the cost-effective DIGISUPER 23xs lens (XJ23x7B IE-D).

HD-EC Cine-Style Prime and Zoom Lenses
Canon's HD-EC (High-Definition Electronic Cinematography) prime and zoom lenses are designed for digital HD "24p" production of theatrical motion pictures and episodic television series. The entire HD-EC series line of lenses will be exhibited at the 2008 NAB Show, including three cine-style zooms (the HJ8x5.5B, HJ11x4.7B, and HJ21x7.5B) and six cine-style prime lenses ranging from 5mm to 55mm. All Canon HD-EC lenses feature traditional film-style lens feel and operation: large, dual, luminous scales for focus (marked in feet) and iris, as well as precise mechanics and a defined control of torque with no backlash. Also on display will be the innovative ACV-235 Anamorphic Converter, which captures very wide aspect ratio (2.35:1) images with all available 2/3 inch 24P digital HD cameras.

The Canobeam DT-150 HD
Drawing on its worldwide expertise in optics, Canon developed the Canobeam DT-150 HD digital transceiver to wirelessly bridge gaps in HD transmission situations. The Canobeam DT-150 HD digital transceiver uses an eye-safe laser to generate infrared light for wide-bandwidth digital video transmission via line-of-sight Free Space Optics. A pair of Canobeam DT-150 HD digital transceivers can provide a temporary or permanent alternative (or back-up) to RF and/or fiber for transmitting uncompressed, high-bandwidth (HD-SDI and SD-SDI) video, audio and camera-control signals bi-directionally and without delay. Situations requiring the Canobeam DT-150 HD can include golf and other sporting events where cables may be impractical, signal backhaul in RF-heavy areas, or TV station STLs (studio/transmitter links). The Canobeam DT-150 HD digital transceiver has a range of up to one kilometer and features Canon's exclusive Auto Tracking feature to maintain beam alignment despite vibration due to wind, rain, or unsteady camera platforms.

Exclusive Technology Collaboration
One year ago, Canon and Vinten - a leading manufacturer of tripods, pedestals, pan/tilt heads, camera robotics, and other innovative camera-support solutions - jointly announced an exclusive technology collaboration. Now, at the 2008 NAB show, the benefits of this collaboration are available to users of most existing Canon HD field lenses that have Canon's Optical Shift Image Stabilizer (Shift-IS) technology. Canon's Shift-IS feature enables camera operators to capture rock-solid HD images even at telephoto distances. The Canon-Vinten technology collaboration integrates the advanced capabilities of Canon's Shift-IS lens technology with high-resolution optical encoders built into Vinten's Vector 950 Active pan/tilt head, which, combined with a customized serial controller box, creates a link between the two technologies. This link transmits precise, real-time digital positioning data from the pan-and-tilt head to the Shift IS stabilization system in Canon HD field lenses. The result is the elimination of any trace of lag after fast pan or tilt shots - a great advantage in the production of fast-paced HDTV sporting and entertainment events. A standard feature of the Canon DIGISUPER 100AF and DIGISUPER 86AF autofocus HD field lenses, the Canon-Vinten technology collaboration is also now available as an optional upgrade on the DIGISUPER 100xs, DIGISUPER 86xs II and DIGISUPER 75xs HD field lenses that have Canon's Shift-IS lens technology.
