12:38 PM 9/6/2012 - StreetInsider
So you want to buy winning stocks? Well keep it simple and just focus on stocks with high revenue growth.
Second quarter earnings season showed that companies capable of expanding sales despite challenges in the economy will outperform peers, according to research from Goldman Sachs. Meanwhile, these stocks are trading at just historical average valuations.
With margins coming down due to the stagnant economy, revenue growth will be needed for higher earnings. Only a few companies were able to show growth. In fact, S&P 500 sales grew only 3 percent in 2Q, the lowest rate since 2009. 2013 doesn't look much better, with Goldman expecting S&P 500 sales growth of just 5 percent.
Only 16 percent of S&P 500 companies are forecast to grow sales by more than 10% in 2013, and revenue surprises were rare in 2Q. But upside was easily seen in these winners as "80% of stocks that beat revenue estimates in 2Q beat the market during the next week."
Goldman is recommending a basket of US stocks with the highest Revenue Growth (available as on Bloomberg).
Some stocks in this basket include: In IT: salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) (27% projected '13 sales growth), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) (27% projected '13 sales growth);
In Financials: Morgan Stanley (NYSE: MS) (13% projected '13 sales growth);
In Energy: Cabot (NYSE: COG) (40% projected '13 sales growth);
In Health Care: Watson Pharmaceuticals (NYSE: WPI) (46% projected '13 sales growth);
In Consumer Discretionary: Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) (28% projected '13 sales growth);
In Industrials: United Tech (NYSE: UTX) (15% projected '13 sales growth);
In Materials: Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX) (19% projected '13 sales growth);
In Utilities: Duke Energy (NYSE: DUK) (20% projected '13 sales growth);
In Telecom: Crown Castle (NYSE: CCI) (7% projected '13 sales growth)
New York considers ending fracking moratorium
August 22, 2012
Reports suggest that New York environmental regulators might be planning to reverse course on the state's long-standing moratorium on the oil and gas exploration technique known as hydraulic fracturing, according to CBS News.
Much of New York's southern border lies on top of the massive Marcellus shale play, one of the largest deposits of unconventional natural gas in the U.S., but concerns about the environmental impacts of the methods used to extract such gas led officials to prevent any significant exploration.
After years of lobbying from the industry and landowners in those regions, the state could be considering laying out strict guidelines for the practice.
Initial reports suggested that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was considering a proposal that would allow fracking only in several southwestern counties where the Marcellus shale is primarily located.
However, opinions on the process remain mixed, with The Albany Times-Union reporting a new survey from the Siena Research Institute found nearly even support and opposition for fracking, with 39 percent in favor and 38 percent against.
Natural gas production outlooks are available at PennEnergy's Research area.

Cabot Issues Statement On EPA Data And Decision
Wed July 25, 2012 6:06 PM | about: COG
HOUSTON, July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (COG) today announced that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined, "that there are not levels of contaminants present that would require additional action by the Agency." This statement, from their release, is the result of data from a second, confirmatory set of water samples from its testing in Dimock, PA. At the same time, the EPA also announced that it would cease deliveries to residents currently receiving water from the EPA, because the agency, "determined that it is no longer necessary to provide residents with alternative water."
As with the three previous sets of water samples compiled by the EPA at private drinking water wells in Dimock, PA, the data released today once again confirms the EPA and Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) findings that levels of contaminants found do not possess a threat to human health and the environment. These findings are consistent with thousands of pages of water quality data previously accumulated by state and local authorities and by Cabot Oil & Gas. As with the other findings, the EPA did not indicate that those contaminants that were detected bore any relationship to oil and gas development in the Dimock area.
"All of us at Cabot are pleased with the Dimock water test results announced today by the EPA," said Dan O. Dinges, President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation. "The conclusions reached by the EPA mirror those previously made by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Cabot. I am satisfied that concerns over water quality have been studied to the highest levels of scrutiny. I hope this will finally put this matter to rest and I personally want to thank all those members of the community who were supportive throughout this period."
