Posted: July 21, 2010 at 3:44 pm
Print Email Subscribe Follow us on Twitter Investing in global Lithium demand trends just became much easier. An ETF is coming out this week called the Global X Lithium ETF. It is not a commodity fund but it does track the components of the Solactive Global Lithium Index. The index tracks the performance of the lithium industry, which is companies that mine or explore for lithium, sell and distribute lithium, and those which are big end-users of lithium battery production. Some of the big or recognized stock and ADR names that comprise this ETF are Chemical & Mining Co. of Chile Inc. (NYSE: SQM), FMC Corp. (NYSE: FMC), Rockwood Holdings Inc. (NYSE: ROC), A123 Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: AONE), Exide Technologies (NASDAQ: XIDE), Advanced Battery Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABAT), Ener1, Inc. (NASDAQ: HEV), Ultralife Corp. (NASDAQ: ULBI), China BAK Battery, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBAK), and Valence Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: VLNC).
This Lithium ETF from Global X is expected to launch on Friday, July 23, 2010 and will trade under the “LIT” ticker on the New York Stock Exchange. These are not all of the names, but these are the names of stocks that actively trade in the U.S. which are components in the ETF. We have included the initial weighting in the proposed ETF, although that will change through time. Weightings will be as follows:
•Chemical & Mining Co. of Chile Inc. (NYSE: SQM) 20.00%
•FMC Corp. (NYSE: FMC) 17.24%
•Rockwood Holdings Inc. (NYSE: ROC) 7.25%
•A123 Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: AONE) 4.75%
•Exide Technologies (NASDAQ: XIDE) 4.75%
•Advanced Battery Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABAT) 4.75%
•Ener1, Inc. (NASDAQ: HEV) 4.75%
•Ultralife Corp. (NASDAQ: ULBI) 2.92%
•China BAK Battery, Inc. (NASDAQ: CBAK) 2.81%
•Valence Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: VLNC) 2.22%
The Solactive Global Lithium Index tracks the price movements in shares of the largest and most liquid companies whose main business operations are in exploration and/or mining of Lithium or a closely related activity or production of Lithium batteries. The index is calculated as a total return index in USD and adjusted semi-annually. As it adjusts semiannually, so will the weighting of its components.
An inquiry into the company notes that the official launch will be the same seed capital as all Global X ETF products, which is 100,000 shares at a launch price of $15.00. With the sector being difficult to invest in and with the actively traded U.S.-listed stocks (some are foreign ADRs) above having an initial weighting of more than 70%, it seems likely that investors will have far more interest than an initial size of 100,000 shares.

Overview
Rodinia has 100% mineral rights to 50,440 acres in Nevada’s lithium-rich Clayton Valley in Esmeralda County and is currently in the process of assessing the size, quality and processing alternatives of its Lithium Brine Project. Early estimates put the valley’s lithium deposits as high as 700 million kg, ranking it second only in size to the deposits found in Chile.
Highlights
?Property adjacent to the only US lithium production facility
?Focused on low-cost lithium brine production
?Known historical resource in mining-friendly Nevada
Chief Properties
Clayton Valley Project
Esmeralda County, Nevada
Clayton Valley is located in the centre of Esmeralda County, Nevada, approximately 70 kilometres west of Goldfield, the county seat, and approximately 88 kilometers southwest of Tonopath the largest nearby town.
Clayton Valley is home to the only lithium producer in the United States. This plant extracts lithium from brines pumped from aquifers below the valley and has been in production since 1967. The plant is designed to produce 1.2 million kg of lithium per year and to date has produced an estimated 50 million kg of lithium. Rodinia’s property is adjacent to this production facility.
In 1975, I.A. Kunasz of the American Institute of Mining, estimated the mineral endowment of Clayton Valley to be 750 million kg of lithium. A more recent study by Price, Lechler, Lear and Giles in 2000, suggests that significantly more lithium was released into the Clayton Valley catchment by the weathering of high lithium bearing rocks. They suggest that as groundwater enters the basin, it appears to be dissolving lithium minerals accumulated in valley sediment and is partially recharging the lithium content of the brine, while mining operations have been ongoing.
Rodinia now has a total of 45,440 acres under its control, accounting for approximately 90% of the valley. The Company has planned an aggressive exploration program to target additional layers of lithium bearing brines which may exist throughout the property.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will be providing a $28.4 million grant to expand the Silver Peak lithium production facility operated by the Chemetall Foote subsidiary of Rockwood Holdings (NYSE: ROC). The funding grant represents 50 percent of the estimated project development upgrading costs.
The DOE grant is partially being used to install a geothermal power plant which the company expects will make the operation self-sufficient for electric power. The company believes that the reduced energy costs will increase the global competitiveness of the operation and that the combination of solar and geothermal energy should supply more than 98 percent of the energy requirements at the site. In the next few months the project expectations include the addition of a well drilling program that will double the capacity of its lithium carbonate production.
The Silver Peak plant, which is currently the only operating domestic lithium resource in the US, extracts lithium salts by brine evaporation in the Clayton Valley. The brine is pumped from salt-rich aquifers beneath the desert and evaporated in large ponds on the desert surface. The concentrated brine is then pumped to a production plant where it is converted into lithium carbonate, the basic raw material for lithium compounds.
Lithium investors will already be aware that there is growing consensus that energy storage is the next big investment opportunity because cost-efficient storage can significantly improve the profit potential and reliability of every alternative power technology. While some observers remain critical of potential system costs and safety risks, this most recent grant from the DOE to Rockwood seems to underscore a bullish investment thesis and indicates a further commitment to clean technology and alternative fuel sources that the current administration is demonstrating.
World’s Largest Lithium Iron Phosphate Plant to be Built in Quebec
Sud-Chemie AG (ETR: SUC) , a specialty chemical company based in Germany, has announced plans to invest $80 million for the construction of a new production facility in southern Quebec, to make lithium iron phosphate used in electric vehicle battery technology. Michel Parent, Director of Sales and marketing for Phostech Lithium was extremely optimistic about the recent announcement, “This will revolutionize the market for batteries”.
The German group is constructing the first industrial production plant for lithium iron phosphate using a new, proprietary production process based-on wet chemistry, on the site of its wholly-owned Canadian subsidiary, Phostech Lithium Inc. Performance, cost, chemistry and safety characteristics vary across lithium ion battery types. Depending on the selection of materials, the voltage, capacity, life, and safety of lithium ion batteries can range significantly. Efforts in lithium ion battery research have focused on nanotechnologies with improvement in both capacity and rate characteristics. The capacity of the battery to store energy can be improved through the ability to insert/extract more lithium ions from the electrode.
The company plans on launching commercial production in 2012, with sufficient output to supply batteries for 50,000 completely electric automobiles, or 500,000 electric hybrids vehicles on an annual basis.
Quebec is quickly making a compelling case to be considered as a primary location for global investment and industrial production, as it has already established itself as the number one jurisdiction for mining by the Fraser Institute annual survey based on how mineral endowment and public policy factors, such as taxation and regulation, affect mining and exploration investment.
Earlier this year, Hydro-Québec partnered with Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada and the city of Boucherville, Que., on the largest pilot project in Canada testing electric vehicles in practical driving situations. The $4.5 million test will use 50 Mitsubishi i-Miev cars, starting this fall.
The utility has also entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Nissan (PINK: NSANY), the Government of Québec, the City of Montréal, Québec City, and the Agence de l’efficacité énergétique du Québec to advance zero-emission mobility in Québec. The objective of this strategic allegiance is to work together to plan the necessary charging infrastructure and to promote the use of zero-emission vehicles in Québec.

digg Share Last Thursday, a binding letter agreement was executed to combine Salares Lithium Inc. (CVE:LIT) and Talison Minerals Pty Ltd to strategically merge their respective lithium assets and create the world’s largest, publicly traded lithium production and exploration company. Effectively the merger should provide an attractive diversified mix of lithium mineral and brine assets in both Australia and Chile, offering a combination of the Australian -ased lithium minerals production with promising relatively low cost lithium brines exploration properties located in Chile.
Lithium investors will be extremely interested in observing this development as Talison has announced immediate operational expansions are required in production to satisfy substantial growth in lithium demand from Chinese battery producers, for whom the company is the primary supplier. The demand has largely been driven by government policies encouraging alternative energy vehicles in pursuit of reduced reliance on oil imports, energy security and environmental objectives.
Unanimous support from both boards of directors to endorse the transaction appears to indicate an excellent fit and strong cooperation between the corporate cultures. Following completion of the regulatory procedures and filing requirements, the merged group will be known as Talison Lithium Limited with offices in Perth, Australia and Vancouver, Canada. The Plan of Arrangement is anticipated to be implemented by the end of September, 2010, subject to obtaining all necessary approvals and satisfaction of other conditions. The expectation is for Talison Lithium to become a publicly traded company listed on Toronto Stock Exchange, subject to approval and customary merger conditions.
First Quarterly Results Reported for Lithium Americas Corp.
Last week Lithium Americas Corp. (TSE:LAC), reported financial quarterly results for the period ending May 31, 2010. As this was the first official reporting period since the inception of the company comparative results were not available. Key operational highlights and updates since February included the acquisition of an additional 6,477 hectares, increasing the land package associated with its principal property to 43,451 hectares, and increasing its overall land package in Argentina to 125,704 hectares. The company has also completed a high-resolution seismic tomography survey over its main property area located within the Cauchari salt lake reconstruct the salt lake basin and identify the brine bearing aquifers.
Performing preliminary air lift tests in reverse circulation holes and in diamond drill holes have measured rates that indicate the aquifer is thick, and has high yields allowing for the extraction of brine from the aquifer. The drilled reverse circulation holes have also approximately doubled the width at approximately 40 percent greater depth of the initial lithium/potassium brine area that was used in calculating the inferred resource estimate. The quality of the concentration in one of the drill results also recorded the highest lithium brine concentration value to date on the exploration program with 946 milligrams per litre lithium over a length of 17 metres.
Largest South Korean Chemicals Manufacturer Considers Lithium Battery Plants in China and Europe
LG Chem Chief Executive Officer Kim Bahn-suk told analysts and reporters last Friday in Seoul that the company was thinking of building lithium-ion battery plants for electric vehicles in China and Europe. A subsidiary of the company launched a ground-breaking ceremony for a $303 million battery plant in Holland, Michigan, to supply batteries for General Motors, Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F) Focus, and Eaton Corp (NYSE:ETN).
Toyota Announces Electric RAV4 Plans
A very preliminary announcement was released on Monday from Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:TM) regarding the development of an electric version of the RAV4. The initiative between Toyota and Tesla Motors outlines an aggressive schedule for bringing the RAV4 EV to market by 2012. This would significantly accelerate Toyota’s plug-in electric vehicle portfolio plans to offer an all-electric small SUV, an all-electric small urban commuter car, and a plug-in version of the Toyota Prius on the market in 2012. This production and marketing timeline for the electric RAV4 is the most rapid deployment on a specific Toyota product that the company has ever developed before for any vehicle, including traditional internal combustion motor models.

Lithium is considered to be approximately the 25th most abundant element sharing roughly the same abundance as lead and nickel. Although it is widely distributed on earth, lithium does not naturally occur in elemental form due to its high reactivity. Seawater contains an estimated 230 billion tons of lithium, although the concentrations are comparatively low ranging from 0.1 to 0.2 ppm. There are a fairly large number of both lithium mineral and brine deposits but relatively few of them are of actual or potential commercial value. Actual and potential sources of lithium are from continental brines, clay mineral hectorite, pegmatite, geothermal brines and oilfield brines.
CONTINENTAL BRINES – these brines contain lithium derived mainly from the leaching of volcanic rocks and vary greatly in lithium content, largely as a result of the extent to which they have been subject to solar evaporation. They range from highly concentrated lithium deposits in the high altitude salars of Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Tibet and China where lithium concentrations can be very high; to mid level brines like Silver Peak, Nevada and Searles Lake, California (a former location of lithium production); to lower concentration brines like the Great Salt Lake, Utah. The lower concentration brines have modest evaporation rates and dilution is constant due to a large volume of fresh water inflow and small lithium concentrations varying between 30 to 60 ppm.
The primary global source of lithium production is currently derived from Chilean and Argentinean continental brine deposits. The Salar de Atacama is the location of the world’s largest lithium brine mine operated by Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A., or SQM (NYSE: SQM). This salar is also the site of a productive lithium mine operated by Rockwood Holdings (NYSE: ROC) the parent company of Chemetall, which is a diversified manufacturer and marketer of specialty chemicals.
The Salar de Hombre Muerto in Argentina is also considered a world class lithium deposit and the location of a productive mining operation by FMC Corporation (NYSE: FMC), a broadly based chemical company serving multiple market segments. The neighboring Salar de Olaroz is currently being developed by Orocobre (ASX:ORE). The Salar de Rincon is located in north-western Argentina near the Chilean border and is also the site of another world class lithium deposit. Salar de Rincon was being developed by Admiralty Resources but it has been acquired by the Sentient Group, a natural resources-focused private equity fund.
As the only U.S. lithium producer, Rockwood Holdings operates a continental brine production facility in the Silver Peak, Nevada area; with American Lithium Minerals (OTC: AMLM) and Rodinia Minerals (CVE: RM) currently active among other mining companies in brine exploration in this region of southwestern Nevada.
The largest deposit of lithium in the world is the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, which contains up to 50 to 70 percent of known world reserves; however, the current socialist Bolivian administration has remained unfavorable to foreign mining investment and has stated the intention to maintain the mining rights for the lithium. The Bolivian salar is also less interesting from an investment perspective because of the higher magnesium to lithium ratios, which are three times as high as those at Atacama, making it more difficult to refine the salt into lithium carbonate. Finally, the evaporation rate at Uyuni is only 40 percent of that of the Atacama rates, which would make refining more time consuming.
PEGMATITES – are coarse grained igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of post magmatic fluids. Lithium containing pegmatites are relatively rare and are most frequently associated with tin and tantalum, with some lithium ‘discoveries’ actually resulting from the exploration for the associated minerals. Alaska, Northern Ontario, Quebec, Ireland and Finland are among many other global locations of pegmatite deposits.
The principal lithium pegmatite minerals are spodumene, petalite and lepidolite. All have been used directly in the glass and ceramic industries provided the iron content is low and all have been used as the feedstock for the production of lithium chemicals. Spodumene, as a concentrate, is still used in China for lithium chemical production and advanced mining development in South Western Australia for Galaxy Resources (ASX:GXY) in a joint lithium and tantalum project.
HECTORITE CLAYS – hectorite is a magnesium lithium smectite and the clay is most notably found in a number of areas in the western United States. The largest known deposit is associated with the volcanic rocks of the McDermitt caldera that straddles the Nevada/Oregon border where it occurs in a series of elongated lenses. Western Lithium USA Corporation (CVE: WLC) is the holder of the clay resource and has completed multiple phases of drilling in northwestern Nevada to confirm earlier work and is moving forward to potentially demonstrate a scalable source of lithium carbonate.
GEOTHERMAL BRINES – Small quantities of lithium are contained in brines at Wairakei, New Zealand (13ppm) at the Reykanes Field (8ppm) and other areas in Iceland and at El Tatio in Chile (47ppm). The most attractive known occurrences are in the Brawley area south of the Salton Sea in Southern California. In addition to the lithium deposits the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA) in southern California contains some concentrations of potash, lead, boron and zinc and currently sustains 10 electricity generation projects, delivering approximately 326 MW of power. A proposed project would bring the total to 511 MW of a 680 MW proven reserve.
OILFIELD BRINES – Deposits of lithium are contained in oil field brines in Alberta, North Dakota, Wyoming, Oklahoma, east Texas and Arkansas where brines grading up to 700 ppm are known to exist. Other oilfield brine lithium deposits exist, most notably in the Paradox Basin, Utah; however, global reviews for deposit size, potential yield and production cost estimates are not available.
Extraction Costs
In the case of continental brines costs can vary, but are considerably lower than extraction costs for other deposit types. The cost of soda ash to convert lithium chloride to lithium carbonate represents a significant percentage of the total costs. The most deleterious element in the brine is magnesium and the magnesium/lithium ratio is lowest at the Salar de Atacama, low at the Salar de Hombre Muerto and slightly higher at the Salar de Rincon. The largest of the Chinese brine deposits also demonstrate higher ratio and these brines need more complex processing.
In the case of production from pegmatites, costs will comprise of mining, beneficiation to a moderate or high grade of concentrate, calcination to produce acid-leachable beta spodumene, reaction with sulphuric acid and the conversion of the lithium sulphate solution with sodium carbonate. The costs of acid, soda ash and energy are a significant percentage of total costs but they can be partly offset if a market exists for the sodium sulfate by-product.
Geothermal brines may be rich in zinc as a co-product, in addition to being a major producer of electric power but, as is with the case of oil field brines lithium recovery costs have not been determined.
Production Expense Counterbalance
An important factor in brine chemistry is the presence or lack of other recoverable byproducts, which can impact the economic viability of a project. Rockwood Holdings recovers moderate quantities of potassium chloride as a co-product at their operation and SQM recover much larger volumes together with potassium sulphate and boric acid. Most of SQM’s potassium chloride is converted to much higher value potassium nitrate using nitrates from company owned deposits located between the salars and the Pacific coast. Most of the Chinese salars contain economic concentrations of potassium and boron.
Grades
Brine grades vary greatly in the Andes, from approximately 0.3 percent lithium at the Salar de Atacama in Chile to 0.062 and 0.034 percent lithium at the two Argentinian salars of Hombre Muerto and Rincon respectively.
Evaporation Rates
An additional factor delineating a world class lithium brine deposit is the net evaporation rate which determines the area of the evaporation ponds necessary to increase the grade of the plant feed. These are often viewed as a major capital cost from an investment standpoint, but are not a factor at the FMC operation where the lithium chloride is recovered directly from the in situ brine.

Strategic Mining (PINKSHEETS: SMNG): Moving To OTCBB

Tags: bloomberg, Gold, Gold Mining Stocks, Gold Stocks, Markets, Mining, OTCBB, Pink Sheets, SMNG, SMNG.pk, Vietnam, WMM NanoCap Index, World Market Media Strategic Mining (Pink Sheets: SMNG) announced that it plans to file next week with the SEC Form 10Q for the first quarter and Form 10A, an amended version of the Form 10 that includes responses to the latest SEC questions.
The company filed a Form 10 with the SEC on April 30 to initiate the process to move to the Bulletin Board. As of June 30, Strategic Mining is subject to all of the reporting requirements of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The filing of the Form 10Q will immediately move the company to OTCBB status.
The Bulletin Board reaches a much wider audience both domestically and internationally. Strategic Mining is now a reporting company offering more transparency while investors and their brokers would have greater ease and less restrictions to monitor, buy and sell the company's stock. Financial institutions would be more inclined to invest into the company.
President Todd Sterck commented: "The filings with the SEC will be another step in our company's efforts to move to a higher exchange and establish itself as a recognized gold exploration company."
Strategic Mining Corporation is engaged in the exploration and development of gold properties in Vietnam, the US (Nevada/Utah) and Africa. The company intends to expand by acquiring mineral rights to more key properties and initiating strategic joint ventures.

Chumash
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaJump to: navigation, search
Chumash may refer to:
Chumash (Judaism), a Hebrew word for the Pentateuch, used in Judaism
The term Torah (Hebrew: ???????, "teaching" or "instruction", or "law"), also known as the Pentateuch (Greek: penta [five] and teuchos [tool, vessel, book]),[1] refers to the Five Books of Moses—the entirety of Judaism's founding legal and ethical religious texts.[2][3] A "Sefer Torah" (????? ???????, "book of Torah") or Torah scroll is a copy of the Torah written on parchment in a formal, traditional manner by a specially trained scribe under strict requirements.
Chumash people, a Native American people located in California
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chumash_people
The Chumash are Native American people who historically inhabit chiefly central and southern coastal regions of California, in portions of what is now San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, extending from Morro Bay in the north to Malibu in the south. They also occupied three of the Channel Islands: Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel; the smaller island of Anacapa was uninhabited. Modern place names with Chumash origins include Malibu, Lompoc, Ojai, Pismo Beach, Point Mugu, Piru, Lake Castaic, Saticoy, and Simi Valley.
