Mirken has been elected President and Chief Operating Officer of Millennium and its subsidiary Millennium Biotechnologies, Inc. Mr. Mirken brings more that 18 years of combined senior level management, product development and marketing expertise to Millennium. Mr. Mirken was President and Chief Operating Officer of TurboChef Technologies, Inc. (OVEN) where he was responsible for overseeing the global expansion of the company's product line. Under his direction the TurboChef line of products expanded both domestically and internationally serving such global companies as Starbucks, Subway and HMS Host. Earlier, Mr. Mirken was the Senior Vice President of Development for The Trump Organization. Small Canadian biotech moving to Seattle

Saying it needs to be closer to capital and key personnel, Biomira Corp., a small biotech company that concentrates on cancer treatments, is moving its headquarters from Edmonton, Alberta, to the Seattle area.

The company will also reincorporate from a Canadian to a U.S. company.

"This move is intended to raise our profile in the U.S. financial markets, with the goals of increasing the visibility of our exciting product pipeline among U.S. institutional investors and providing access to a larger pool of investment capital. Additionally, we believe that relocating to a major biotechnology center such as Seattle will provide greater opportunity to attract and retain key personnel," said Dr. Robert Kirkman, president and CEO, in a statement. He added that the company will maintain an Edmonton presence and the move is an effort to "increase long-term shareholder value."

Shares in the company (NASDAQ: BIOM - News) fell nearly 14 percent in Wednesday trading, falling 15 cents to 93 cents.

Biomira currently employs 68 in Edmonton, 10 in Tucson, Ariz. and four in a Bellevue office.

Sector Wrap: Small Biotechs Rise

Shares of Small Biotech Companies Rise on Pipeline News; Inhibitex Gains on HIV Drug Licensing


NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of small biotech companies rose Wednesday, with Hollis-Eden Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Novavax Inc. sharply higher on positive pipeline developments.
Ahead of a presentation at a medical conference, Hollis-Eden said its drug candidate HE3286 for rheumatoid arthritis also provided benefits in an animal model in multiple sclerosis.

The San Diego company is presenting data this week at the 2nd International Congress on Immune-Mediated Diseases in Moscow.

Chairman and Chief Executive Richard Hollis said in a statement the company intends to file this month an investigational new drug application to support an early/midstage clinical trial with HE3286 in diseases of inflammation.

The news sent Hollis-Eden's share up 14 cents, or 6.9. percent, to close at $2.18, with trading nearly two and a half times normal daily volume.

The Nasdaq Biotechnology Index, which tracks a range of small- and mid-cap stocks rose 2.29 to close at 841.71.

Also Wednesday, Novavax announced a new discovery program to create a vaccine for preventing disease associated with Varicella Zoster Virus in older adults.

Varicella Zoster Virus causes herpes zoster, or shingles, which is a skin rash often with painful blisters, and is the same virus that causes chickenpox.

The potential worldwide market for a VZV vaccine in older adults is estimated to exceed $1 billion annually, with only one product currently on the market, according to Novavax.

The Rockville, Md., company's stock rose 25 cents, or 7.4 percent, to $3.66 in afternoon trading.

Other big gainers in the biotech sector included Inhibitex Inc., which late Wednesday said it licensed a group of anti-HIV compounds from the University of Georgia Research Foundation.

Inhibitex said it will select a lead drug candidate from the program and begin studies early next year. Should any of the compounds reach the market, the Atlanta company would pay the university milestone and royalty payments.

Inhibitex shares gained 18 cents, or 13.7 percent, to $1.49.

Elsewhere in the biotech sector, shares of a much larger company, Amgen Inc., added $1.97, or 3.7 percent, to $55.84.

Amgen continued a rally that began Tuesday, following a Food and Drug Administration ruling not to recommend restrictions on the company's anemia drugs.
